Paul I’ve followed your channel for a few years now. I just want to say thank you so much for helping Derek out with Ken who is from Wales(Scotland) It’s amazing the power of the internet. Ken wouldn’t be with us much longer if it wasn’t for the help you guys gave him, hang your head high you are all heroes. Stay safe and God Bless
I filed in the Philippines. Contacted the embassy by email 90 days before I could claim my benefits. They did a phone interview one month before my birth date. It took about ten minutes on the phone and they basically confirm all of my personal information. I expected problems since it was in the Philippines, lol. Luckily it went very smooth.
When living abroad SS still wants to mail documents to to your residence. I have a digital mail box in the west but they still mail to your residence. I was able to change my residence address thru the SS office at the Manila Embassy. Also filed for SS thru the Embassy in Manila. Via the website and phone interview. They have been polite, courteous and professional.
@@randyschmitz1014 It was all done online and phone. I did do some research and was ready for most of the questions. Date of marriage and divorce. They also asked a question or 2 that was never part of my life. Like a property I never owned or a place I never lived. Testing I think. The Gentleman in this video says he did not want them to know he was going to PH. They are gonna know. I have received some mail from SS and they send it here.
Dealing with any Government agency is terrible regarding wait times, but do understand the Social Engineering scams they need to watch out for. Great video Paul !!
What a difference 6 years makes! I am one of those guys that applied, from Thailand, using the Manila office, and everything went smoothly. In hindsight, I remember being at home early in the morning and getting that Social Security phone call. I'm not sure I even knew I was going to get a phone call but there I was answering a few easy questions and then I started getting my checks to my US bank account. This year I changed my Thai address and contacted the Manila office by email. The emailed me back within a week to say that my address had been changed. I got a proof of life letter to my new address a few months ago. I have to say you people in the Philippines have got it rough and the advice in this video sounds prudent. Here in Thailand, city or rural, the electricity stays on, the internet works, and mail gets delivered promptly.
I dunno. I filed for surviving spouse benefits during the pandemic 5 days before I left America via phone. They told me to mail my paperwork. The office was mostly closed due to the pandemic. I have google voice and ported my American number there. They called me back when I was in Thailand. I got the call no problema. They asked me more questions and then told me I can check everything on the my social security web site. Worked like a charm. No nightmares. She told me I can switch to my own benefits anytime. Very nice lady. So I got social security when I was 60! Hahaha. I’m 63 now. Still doing survivor benefits. My benefits continue to grow. For me… it’s a sweet deal. 👍🍺. Btw… I’m in Philippines now. Not married and not going to be married like ever again. One woman. 30 years. She’s dead and I’m not going through that trip again. One time was plenty for this guy. I’m totally enjoying my freedom. And every time I drink a beer I always smile and say “thanks baby”. I’m letting her buy me beer for several more years to come. 😎
I had a nightmare trying to get my social security here in the PI. I just got my 4 months of back pay Friday (6 months after I originally filed)and I will get my first monthly check on January 3. Hopefully!! I filed in July since my birthday was in august and I had to deal with social security in Missouri who transferred me to Manila who transferred me to Baltimore and they transferred me back to Manila. I finally had to threaten them with going to my congressman from my home state. I was told in September that my claim was clean and clear and to expect to get paid October. 🤦🏼♂️there is so much to this story but it would take forever to explain all the BS. I paid into social security for 45 years straight and I’m also a veteran. I feel his pain
I had a similar bad experience. It took me 2 months to get a call back from Manila. I am in Thailand, so had to make an appointment to have my passport certified at the US Consulate in Chiang Mai. That took 2 weeks. I applied in June and hopefully I will get my first check in January. The guy from SS Manila was great. They will back pay me to my birthday.
@@douglaswilliams4274 I pray you get all your money soon; it’s BS that a person works their whole life only to be hassled when they are trying to relax after a long career and it’s the money you and I paid into the system and deserve to receive.
Nobody cares you are Vet, I am one too...30 years time....I believe your pain...they dont care if you call Congress either, that rarely filters down to the folks on the ground at SS office...Well....at least you getting paid now, but dollar getting killed thru inflation....it is all a drug...to keep us stupid....
@@Cowboysfan4ever I am very fortunate that I was not counting on the money coming in August and that they are going to back pay me. I know that a lot of people are not that fortunate and need their checks to pay their bills. Stay Safe and Stay Blessed !
I traveled back to the states in September. Filed online. They called me about 1 item. I called back with the information. It took 30 days for them to complete the analysis. They sent me a letter stating what I would receive. The first payment in January which is 1 month after my 62nd birthday. Easy process for me. There was no phone interview. Also, if you don’t feel like filing in the Philippines, there are social security offices in Guam. I think it is a 3 hour flight.
I think people should expect SS procedures and security to always be different because SS is a prime target of criminals. So they're always trying to combat risks. Also arguing, getting mad at SS employees is not useful because they're bound my law. It's not like a business were you can go Karen and think the employee will cave and do whatever you want. SS employees get fired for not following the law. Asking questions like the date of a Father-in-law coming to the US, etc... isn't necessarily because they expect you to actually know the date. They're listening to your response. The correct answer might be "I don't know". And yes, you are being interrogated by a trained interrogator. I am a little surprised this is done over the phone since they can get more info in person on how a person is acting. Strangely if you prepare a lot of info you could appear to the interrogator as a criminal. That could lead to some other type of interview or deeper background check. Almost 6 million Americans start SS each year. 5,999,999 of them don't know correct answers to most questions but they end up getting SS. If 1,000's of people were denied benefits it would be a huge news stories and Congress, Senate and Executive branch would be all over SS to fix it.
Maybe, you sound too optimistic about govt helping you or the masses....Govt produces nothing, they rob the money from the young and pay to old people...Govt caring about you is the biggest lie of all. Govt creates the inflation which is destroying the value of your little check anyway...it is a con...
SS is the easiest thing in the world to apply for. You do it months before you are eligiable. You fill out the form online and if you have questions they will set up a phone call. you set up an account on the SS website and its a piece of cake. its the best run agency in the US.
I had a different experience, it was very pleasant. Went to the SSS personally applied for social security benefits with my important documents three months ahead of time before my age 62. At first they discourage me to draw my social security at an early age, the point she told was I’ll be receiving benefits at a lower rate instead if I apply at the age of 65. But anyway I told the lady that I wanna received my benefits early. After three months I received my first social benefits. Now I’m on Medicare which means I’m passed 65. Oh yeah I’m a retired 🇵🇭/🇺🇸veteran. I’m not thinking about retiring in the Philippines, vacationing for a month is good enough.
Star link is the way to go Paul I use it in northern Canada were no signal is available it’s a little costly but you turn it on and point it towards the sky and your good to go
Hi @madworldmedia1991 Thanks for the tip! We've considered satellite internet options too, especially when we're out of cell range. Good to know it works well in Northern Canada!
The Biggest thing in the Philippines is "The Learning Curve" in just finding out how things work or even finding simple things. Paul is just like how he is in his videos and Baby Mae is even prettier in person and his willingness to help other expats and also help the community is amazing as it keeps him busier then if he was in the USA working as he truly does so much for others. I agree with Ali that Paul has been so Instrumental in educating and yes influencing me and others to not only come to the Philippines but also Dumaguete as it is truly a wonderful city of "Gentle People".
What got me was all the little things. Just one example, in the US all public access buildings are required to have exterior doors that open outwards. You give this absolutely zero thought until you yoink your wrist pulling on a door that is plainly labeled "push".
@@johne4323 True, but US fire codes only apply in the US. More often than not they open inwards here. In places without a doorman they are usually plainly marked. You don't spend too much time pulling on a door marked push before you get with the program. It's just one of a hundred tiny things you unconsciously assume are universal... until they aren't.
I will bet many viewers are divorced-widowers, and now we can prepare for the questions about the ex-wife (ex-wives, late wife). Paul, I notice you recommend rationally doing things step by step. I learn from both of you. Maraming salamat po.
I live in Sacramento as well and went to the same office to ask a question and I felt the same way. The security guards were rude and entitled and soon as I said hi he said go outside and stand behind the red line until I call you. It felt more like a welfare office than Social security.
Agreed, apply in the USA for SS, have apps on USA phone and accessable USA phone number for banking accounts etc, leave money in USA and access from your new country, your on vacation and traveling not living in another country, otherwise Banks will close your account, USA Mail services if you don't have a reliable relative, multiple ways to send, receive and access your money, Auto pay for any payment accounts back home. I suggest multiple trips to and from your home country to work out the kinks before permanently moving. Have a reliable steady source of income and a reserve before leaving your home country. Best of luck 😁
EXACTLY! I am 4 years away from SS retirement and this is Exactly what I plan to do! Channels like this are truly a Godsend, a wealth of information about the pitfalls of what can go wrong and ways to circumnavigate potential problems before they arrise
ALWAYS great to hear you guys talk about HOW you handle finances when your $$$ is sitting on the other side of planet Earth and some of the issues and problems you can run into, Like Ali stated it cost him 2 grand to fly to America but was LUCKY enough to have parents to stay with for 6 weeks to solve what should have been a 1 day issue at best! ALWAYS my biggest fear of living in the Philippines! Gonna write some of this down, Magic Jack, USA phone, money transfer apps? Remitly? Xoom? Charles Schwab? THANKS so much guys! Thumbs up Paul!
not an expat but retired on SS. I retired last year at 64 and had no problems whatsoever. Simply went to the office and answered a couple of questions and that was it.
That's my plan. I can retire with retirement accounts in 2025 but turning 62 in 2027. I am still not leaving until I get all done with Social Security before I leave even though I would be good with just retirement accounts. (Also, my asawa, my wife to be in a few weeks is not having it about finances not being straight before moving to PI, back to PI for her, lol)
Very interesting story. I recently filed to receive my benefits online without ever stepping foot into a Social Security offfice. It was the smoothest and easiest process I ever had with a goverment agency.
@@robmcguckin7605 They just said that they would call when I filed on line. No time was given. I almost hung up when I didn't recognize the number. The lady was very happy that I answered so she can complete her work. She was real nice. What I remember is she asked me something about my work history that only I would know. When I answered her question everthing was a go.
They might be asking questions like when your father in law became a citizen expecting that you wouldn't know the answer.and if you did it might trigger a red flag
I don’t even know the date I naturalized much less anyone else’s naturalization dates in my family!!! Heck, I can’t remember what I did, YESTERDAY!!! I agreed, that was an impossible question to pose anyone!
I’m planning on filing for my S.S. next March, 3 months before moving to the P.I. In mid-June. Just to make sure everything works, BEFORE I get there! If I need to stay in the U.S. another month, then so be it. S.S. Will be my living expenses, so it’s important. The 2 check rule is something I learned from you, Paul. Thank you
Government workers are no better than those at the DMV. I was not surprised the way you were treated. I am an online filer. I began it on Jan 4th of this year, and I finally have my phone interview on June 18th. Yep, over 6 months. On my confirmation letter that they email over, there was only one thing listed that they wanted- My banking information. I was married before, but not over 10 years- so when I also filed online as well, it needed no information once I answered less than 10 years. But based on what I just heard on this video, I will have as much info on the EX as I can in front of me. I am in Thailand, but will be using my Bank of America account to handle the funds. Not sure how long before I get paid after the phone interview, but another two months would not be surprising. Great information guys! Thanks!
Absolutely amazing. I’d like to say this is surprising, but nothing is in this post covid world. That is why they say the most dangerous words in the world are “we are from the government and we are here to help you”😊
Yea sorry…that was just the line Reagan gave to rile up the rubes. What he was really saying was “we don’t want government getting in the way of the rich getting richer”. So what followed was decades of deregulation, loss of consumer protections, lack of good oversight and guess what…downsizing of govt agencies which led to waiting in line for 3 hours at the SS office. Fact is the govt IS there to help as anyone living in the govt mess existing in the Philippines can tell you.
In the Philippines the government takes a 10 % Value Added Tax out every single purchase, even a meal at McDonald's. But the same government pockets the money and doesn't build sidewalks, much less have anything we Americans take for granted like Medicare, SS and Medicaid. Most Americans living in the Philippines need some type of US funded socialism to survive. Haven't you noticed that SS is needed by most Americans living in the Philippines from this video blog?
Thanks Paul for this video. I'm living in the Philippines. I just turned 62 in May of this year. I'm ready to start drawing my SS benefits. I'm having trouble here getting anything done. I'm going back to the states to get everything set up, then come back here later . Thanks for ur advice.
I filed online and had no problems. You can file 4 months before your birth month. Now, if you have certain situations that require special attention it could cause some problems. Additionally, you will receive a call from SS to go over what to expect and when you'll get your first check.
You are so right and a excellent student of history. Brilliant explanation of the evolution of the economy from that point on. My comment was meant in a different context. Kinda like the IRS ect.
I have a feeling that many of his experiences was that particular office and how they conduct their business. The phone call is probably a new thing that was created during the pandemic era and now they like that it alleviates the crowds of people in their waiting rooms. This was good information for everyone, and being over prepared with data is better than not having it. If people are in the philippines waiting for a call, if the SS Admin gave you a date and time for your call seems it would be wise to be waiting in town where the signal is rock solid.
Hi @kevink1214 Well said! Preparation is key when dealing with government agencies, especially abroad. We agree, being over-prepared is always better than not having any information at all.
I’m 60 and want to retire in 6 months. I have a $170K annuity, plus a 401k depleted to $200K of money that I’m not sure what I can do with at this point. My retirement plans seem to be out the window. Is it a good idea to get professional help?
With everything going on, consider financial planning, … that is okay. You can get your money to work for you. but I would say delay retirement a little
And what if that is all you have, even with SS you may not have enough to retire with. If you opt to work with a financial adviser, Dyor, make sure they are certified from AARP or FINRA.
It’s a good idea to look for a fiduciary who has a legal obligation to work in your best interest and can’t recommend products or services just because they’ll receive a financial kickback for doing so. I and my spouse work with a retirement planner, Monica Mary Strigle an advisor we met in NY, referred by Danielle Dimartino Booth in an interview. Under her guidance, we split our investments, traditional IRA and the individual brokerage account where she copies her moves on our account from her master. We have been up by 74% precisely in the past year She rebalanced again when the year began, we still hold cash and are cautious with how much we let into the market at this point.
I applied for social security in 2021 at 62 (4 months prior) I just filled the application out online. I did not have to send them anything, and I did not have to do an interview. About two weeks after I applied I got a letter saying I would get my first check the third Wednesday in July. I have talked to about five of my friends, they are telling me the same thing.
I did too and did apply online and had an interview on the phone. They just asked my first husband, his SS but couldn’t tell them. I wasn’t asked like what they asked this guy.
More great information Paul, I'll be returning to the US in January to apply for mine and cross my fingers it goes well. I was married for three and a half years but have no kids so I'm hoping that will simplify things abit. Thanks again for the info.
I had a phone interview in the USA with SS and it took about 12 min(that was 5 years ago) and they did ask certain questions about my divorce, birthdates, SS numbers and so on. No big deal. I had all that information written down and was ready. I've been retired now in the Philippines for going on 4 years and use an American address(my son's) and have never received a proof of life letter from the SS so far. I called them years ago and the SS agent said as long as I don't have a foreign address, I shouldn't get one. I have changed my direct deposit one time in the 5 years and it was easy. Went through my MY SS online account but it takes 2 months to be processed. I keep all my money in the USA for safety. Looking back, if you can, make sure you get set up in the USA before you come here. If you come early to the Philippines, I would deal with the SS office in Manila. I see guys deal with the USA SS office calling from the Philippines, get messed up, then try getting it fixed in Manila which can be frustrating. Thanks for sharing the story because it can help others.
I am planning to move to the Philippines later this year, after I turn 62 and get my social security checks coming into the bank. I had not heard about the phone interviews, got some homework to do now! Thanks for the info
Guam is an American territory that have a social security office much closer to the PI. In addition, Manila has an office for those residing in Asia. Is there a reason why you didn't go through either? Just curious.
24:24.....* If your Funeral & or Cremation is handled by a Registered Funeral Home (at least in USA and possesions), they are compeled by Law to also notify the SSA Office of your SS # and date of Funeral Services.
Yes, Heidi of C&G consultants was on another VLOG, and gave incredibly useful information and I have since had a free consultation with her on WhatsApp. All of these VLOGs are extremely helpful in getting a feel for things. I have also seen Philippines lawyers interviewed about various subjects on other VLOGs. These are all just extremely helpful.
Ali is a great guy. I was born in the USA but lost my SS card years ago. Tried to get one online but it said I was not eligible. I went to the ss office in suburban Chicago and there was no security. Easy to get to an agent. But that agent asked a LOT of questions. None of them were impossible such as they asked Ali but still a LOT of questions. It was obvious to me that they were trying to catch any possible fraud. I’m 65+ and have one year to go till I will claim benefits. Hopefully that goes easier but I bet that Ali is correct that his naturalized status triggered the extra layer of interrogation. That’s a shame because it comes off as racist but you never know with ss. Also I’m guessing that whether an office has security to enter depends on where it is and if they have had issues in that office before. I bet people get irate in there sometimes. Hopefully all will be smooth now for Ali collecting his benefits and enjoying a more stress free life. We work hard for decades paying into the system, and the benefits give us a security blanket that we earned.
Hi @marcgoldbergdogtrainer Thanks for sharing your experience! We understand the importance of social security benefits. Wishing you an easy process when you claim yours!
This is a real horror story and way different than my experience. I already had a SSA account for several years before I applied for retirement benefits at age 65. The benefit of me having a SSA account was my ability to follow my earnings and to make sure I was given all my work credits. I applied online in April was approved for benefits in May and I received my first check for June in July. No phone interview required. Everyone should set up an online SSA account way before retirement to monitor your earnings history and estimated benefit payout.
Hi @albertochelo7076 Appreciate the contrast, glad to hear you had a smooth experience! We've found online interactions can be tricky with Social Security. Thanks for sharing!
Very interesting video of if it could go wrong, it will. I was fortunate enough to file 11 years ago when there was some normalcy. sounds like things are getting worse by the day in the USA. I had planned to move to Cebu in Feb. and enjoy a nice life in the Philippines, but due to money issues, previous credit card debt, I won't be able to pull the trigger. Being almost 74, still in good health, but noticing my strength fading quickly, I'll probably never be able to actually put my boots on Philippine soil. So, I'll continue watching Paul's channel to keep my dream alive. Besides, my grandkids didn't want me to leave them anyway. As much as I want to go there, I would miss my grandkids a lot. It would've been a stretch for me to live there, even though my ss is almost $1900 per month, but my actual spending part minus my bills I've accrued over the years is about $1300, it wouldn't be smart for me to press my luck there. I guess the old adage is " we don't always get what we want" is true.
So glad Monty is doing better and back at home with his Loving wife Aragel as he can attest to how things can get bogged down and I pray for things to be smoother and as a heart attack survivor rehab is key as exercise helps get back some of the loss.. As my uncle would say: "Keep Punching"
Excellent advice gentlemen. I believe visiting the local embassy or consulate can also help with "Proof of Life" for any verification required by any US government agency.
Make an appointment & they’ll give you an appointment. When you go to your appointment, they’ll tell you what to do and after that at least for another month before you actually file. I just did mine last Nov 30 & done. I’ll be getting my first check on 3rd week of April.
@@paulinthephilippinesolddog9234 you’re very welcome Paul. Now I’m here in the Philippines in tarlac area. Been back last may 25th. And it’s pretty humid . As a Filipino American, I need to adjust to a slow movement and the weather. Take care
I'm stateside and turned 62 in March 2023. Started drawing in May. Applied online. Never talked to a human being. The entire process took about 15 minutes. What is the SSA doing?
Even though it's the same US Government agency, different states have different way of doing things, even different localities within the same state. Whem ZI applied here in Pennsylvania, it was like Paul said, very easy. Of course there is the security guard always present, but even they have somewhat different guidelines from place to place.
Hi @stan1027 That's true! We've experienced similar differences between states and even localities back home. Glad you had a smooth experience applying here in Pennsylvania!
I filed online in the US on November 16, 2023. I did not have to send any documents and received a call to review my application three weeks later. I was told how much money I would receive and if I had any questions they could answer. It was so easy.
I did mine in 2021 Survivor benifits at 61. Did it online with a phone interview. Easy, no crazy questions, all straight up stuff. But I’m not from Calf. I did and do recommend keep everything in the US. Address, phone # and bank acc.
Just arrived in the Philippines last week. Met Paul a couple of days ago. He invited me to sit with him and a the person he was speaking with. This guy's extremely approachable and friendly. I've been a subscriber of his channel for over a year and consider him a friend now. I am in Dauin now and am really considering retiring in the Philippines.
Okay, I’m not making excuses for the officer at the Social Security office, but they deal with a lot of people daily with a few “shady” customers. It’s a federal building which what you went through does apply concerning searching (except the hands-up thing) as standard operating procedures. I know this for a fact because I was a federal security officer at several of the Social Security offices here in Arizona and we must follow protocol (although it may have changed since 2023). The policy for receiving your social security is a phone interview after your initial contact because I went through the same process when I applied for mine last year. The interview is usually 90 days prior to the start of your social security payments, AND it starts the month AFTER the date of your social security (I still don’t understand why). I did my interview 2 months after going to the social security building in person, and after the interview, was informed when my payments would start. I didn’t have any issues here in Arizona, everything went smoothly, and my payments started one month later after turning 62…
you receive your first payment depends on your birthday, if you were born on the first or second, you get it the next month if you were born any day after that, you have to wait one full month of being 62, I was born on 23 April, my first month of being 62 for the complete month was May, so my first payment was June on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Talk about getting jipped!
My husband and I have filed for our SS benefits online 5 months before our birthdays and we didn't have any problems, now we'll see if the checks will post to our accounts on the date we're supposed to get it. If all things go smoothly we will be flying to the Philippines to retire.
hi long time sub here, just watching and learning, but wow, this was, is a wake up call, to always, always be prepared and to plan ahead, and it is a shock to hear how something like this that can go sideways in a hearbeat, and realizing how things have changed,,,,,,, god help us,,,,
Ali had a complicated situation because of the previous marriages and children. If you were married to an ex for 10+ years they can get benefits from your SS...I'm sure that was a major reason for his hassle during this process and especially the questions he got from them
Hi @TomandAmyinthePI We've encountered similar complexities in our own situation, understanding the challenges that come with multiple marriages and children.
Here in PA, you need to schedule an appointment with the SS / Medicare representative to discuss / apply for your SS retirement / Medicare health insurance. No walk-in is available.
Paul, I have the virtual mailbox to maintain a USA based address as well as a magic jack locally assigned number. My question is, since you have the same thing set up, do you get the proof of life form sent to you? Seems that letter is only for people not residing in the USA. My mother never gets that letter.
Thank you Paul for another great interview and I'm really sorry Ali has to go through with some narcissi government worker who thinks they have the superiority over us. SS benefits are our money we pay into. They should treat us with courtesy. Having said that; I would probably do the same thing just like Ali, keep calm and humble at their mercy. Lol
Social Security has a responsibility to prevent fraud as well. Some of the questions sounded ridiculous but not being able to answer some questions didn’t prevent him from getting his benefits.
I’m not an expat. I filed for SS online pre-Covid and had no issues at the time. Recently, my wife and I had an phone appointment with our local SS office. It was a pleasant call. The main purpose of the call was to fix some issues my wife’s Medicare and SS. The lady did ask several questions about prior marriages and children. She didn’t worry about our grown children, but did ask about any minor children, of which we have none. Although SS never knew about my prior marriage to a Filipina, I didn’t hide it and answered the questions. Fortunately, I had the marriage and death certificates handy and was able to give accurate data. And now my wife of over 40 years is happy with the resolution.
Hey Paul. I'm listening to this story and I'm sort of blown away because I started my SS simply by calling this SS Office. I called on November and they scheduled my interview date on Dec 12 2022. I received a bunch of money in my bank on Dec 22 because I mentioned to them I stopped working on Aug 2022 so they owed me several of months of my SS. It has now been over a year and I'm now living in Isabela Philippines since Aug 30, 2023. I don't understand why anyone would go into the office when you simply can call the office and just wait in line for your call to be answered.
Good video and good info. It is probably a good idea to have all of your information handy. I filed online in January 2022 after Covid just before the Philippines opened back up. I retired January 7. I was 66. As soon as the Philippines opened up I got a flight. Everything went smoothly I received my first check after I was already here. The social Security and navy retirement go into Navy Federal.
I access online. Plus twice they have called me here to verify charges.I have a Magic Jack number. Both times they called me in the middle of the night and I just called back later. I have my Remitly account attached to my Navy Federal Debit card. I transfer cash to Cebuana when I need it. I have used the debit card at hotels. I did need to upgrade Remitly to the second tier. I can easily go online to chek all of my accounts. The second step verification can be done by email or Magic Jack. Almost 2 years and never had a single problem.
I use Navy Federal online to keep track of my account and use my NFCU debit card to transfer money and pay for hotels when traveling and Amazon purchases. They will send verification through Email and local phone numbers.
I’m lucky to have filed when I did. I just walked into the SS office and took a number. The process took about 10 or 15 minutes. That was it. One stop shopping. I would not be able to answer those questions.
Alright Paul I’ve been watching you and other Duma vloggers for years. I sold everything and flew from Panama City Florida to Cebu on Wednesday, December 6th. I stayed a the Belmont for a week then signed a six month’s lease in Mactan at 8 Newtown Place. After the holidays the plan is to come and visit Dumaguete and hopefully run into some of the vloggers I’ve been following. Sorta broke some of the vlogger rules and met a girl at the airport. However, she’s been vested through her sister in the states and two years of correspondence.
Actually SS changed that about the doctors notifying Soc Sec when you die. Now SS wants you to call 30 days in advance of death to get the paperwork rolling. Then they do a follow up call 30 days after you die to make sure you haven't filled out the paperwork incorrectly.
I filed for Social Security benefits here in the Philippines with no problems and received my first deposit on time. But I have spent almost a year trying to get a social security number and benefits for my child. Total incompetence in the people working at the US embassy in Manila. It might take a month for them to email you back. They will lie, stall, hang up on you, basically act ignorant. And when you think everything is complete. They tell you that everything has been sent to the US for approval and I will get a letter in the mail with the ss card. I went ballistic. They are already 17 months behind on child benefits. I think its all done on purpose, as they are still blaming covid for being behind. I can go to the embassy in person, again, and get my childs ss number but still waiting on his benefits. This is the 21st century and government agencies are still the worst at customer service.
As a Veteran whom has spent many years oversears, many tours of Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, your a fool. do you think veterans whom are stationed overseas, or Americans whom choose to live overseas that their children are not US citizens? who are you to talk? @@Friedbrain11
Children of Americans born overseas are also Americans. If the father is drawing Social Security minor children under age 16 are elegible for benefits as well@@Friedbrain11
@@Friedbrain11 Don't post things that show your idiocy. It let's everyone see how ignorant you are. But since you are so simple minded. All children must have a SS number ,even for tax reasons alone. And tell me oh ignorant one. How can something be a scam, when you are legally entitled. 🤫 Shhhh.... don't say anything.
Mr. Paul, I heard him say he had to have all the paper work like Birth cert. Ss card ect. I have a 800 number you call and it takes like 10 or 15 minutes max and they tell you what you will get. They asked when do you want to start it ect. Then they tell you a date when you will get a call back and what time .. don't miss it because they don't call back.. it's very simple... if you want it let me know so you can pass it on
Began collecting SS 7+ years ago. Boy have things changed! 25:26 I have never received a document from SS (Social Security) asking for "proof of life" - is this strictly a requirement for recipients living outside of the USA? How does the SS Administration know where I'm living if my checks are deposited in a US financial institution?
From another February 3rder (2/3/1955) Retired at the beginning of COVID May of 2020 in Southern California. Mine was all internet and phone. A few hiccups and stressful. But SMOOOOTH compared to your friends. I plan on watching more of your channel. Just hope I don't end up selling my house and go knocking on your door!
Applied 60 days ago, still waiting for a telephone interview from the Embassy in Manilla as they no longer do face to face appointments. Anyway, I then applied online and they want certain documents. I have them but then Im supposed to mail them and Im in the Philippines. The mail to the USA will take months. Why can't I present them in person to the embassy? Like others have mentioned, when I did call the Embassy the guy was so rude. I have no idea how this is going to play out now.
@paulinthephilippinesolddog9234 Yeah, it went fine. The trick for me was to complete the online application as that is then directly referred back to the Philippine Embassy to pick up the ball and complete the process, which they did. I sent all necessary documents to them, which they returned via courier.

Paul I’ve followed your channel for a few years now. I just want to say thank you so much for helping Derek out with Ken who is from Wales(Scotland)
It’s amazing the power of the internet.
Ken wouldn’t be with us much longer if it wasn’t for the help you guys gave him, hang your head high you are all heroes.
Stay safe and God Bless
Thanks so much David
I filed in the Philippines. Contacted the embassy by email 90 days before I could claim my benefits. They did a phone interview one month before my birth date. It took about ten minutes on the phone and they basically confirm all of my personal information. I expected problems since it was in the Philippines, lol. Luckily it went very smooth.
this is good info. thank you for this. i am hoping when the time comes this is all automated. have a good day!
Did you not have to visit the Manila office or file anything online? Thanks in advance for the info.
@@randyschmitz1014 no, it was done by email and phone. It was very easy which surprised me.

The Gentleman in this video says he did not want them to know he was going to PH.

I have received some mail from SS and they send it here.
Hi Paul,
Great interview. The information and subject matter are so important.
Hi @Michael-xp9ln Thanks for watching! Glad you found it informative.
Hi @martypoll Thanks for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear everything went smoothly with SSA in Manila.
Hi @L4P-Monk Thanks for sharing your positive experience with social security benefits! Glad it worked out smoothly for you.

So one can apply for Social Security in the Philippines? Where? I have almost a decade before I'm eligible but I'm prepping myself for red tape.
I have benefited greatly watching Paul's video's for the past 3 years. I am very grateful for the information and style of delivery.
Hi @mr.ftravels3295 Thanks for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear the process was smooth and easy for you.

Totally telling the truth Ali. We still need help even after we arrive here. Thanks guys!!!
Hi @ericpohl2512 Thank you for sharing your honest experience! We totally agree, getting settled takes time and effort.
Wow. Getting ready to apply in few months this is very good information. Thank you Ali for sharing. Thanks Paul for another great video.
My pleasure!
So true.
Maybe, you sound too optimistic about govt helping you or the masses....Govt produces nothing, they rob the money from the young and pay to old people...Govt caring about you is the biggest lie of all. Govt creates the inflation which is destroying the value of your little check anyway...it is a con...
Interesting perspective.
You’re exactly right. They EXPECT that you won’t know the answers to some questions.
Hi @marcelocayetano5951 Glad to hear you had a smooth experience with SSS and Social Security! We appreciate your sharing your story.

Thank you 😊
Agree Paul is a great guy in person as well ! I appreciated picking his brain a year ago. 😊
What got me was all the little things. Just one example, in the US all public access buildings are required to have exterior doors that open outwards. You give this absolutely zero thought until you yoink your wrist pulling on a door that is plainly labeled "push".
@@joekahno outward opening doors are regulated by fire code for emergency reasons

Agreed, apply in the USA for SS, have apps on USA phone and accessable USA phone number for banking accounts etc, leave money in USA and access from your new country, your on vacation and traveling not living in another country, otherwise Banks will close your account, USA Mail services if you don't have a reliable relative, multiple ways to send, receive and access your money, Auto pay for any payment accounts back home. not an expat but retired on SS.
The 2 check rule is something I learned from you, Paul. Thank you
It's actually good to know it's stringent like this because there's a lot of fraud.
Thanks!
Hi @americaninthailand8760 Sorry to hear that's your experience with government services here. We've had similar frustrations too.
Good video, Paul.
I really enjoyed listening to your guest. He really made me laugh of his experience with SS.

I filed online and had no problems. You can file 4 months before your birth month. Now, if you have certain situations that require special attention it could cause some problems. Additionally, you will receive a call from SS to go over what to expect and when you'll get your first check.
True, you were lucky...doesnt work that way for everyone...like most you dont care because you got paid....govt counts on this attitude...

You are so right and a excellent student of history. Brilliant explanation of the evolution of the economy from that point on. My comment was meant in a different context. Kinda like the IRS ect.
Hi @ericpohl2512 Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you, I was thinking the same thing, I mean come on man this your primary source of money for the rest of your life, freaking act like it.
I got my Social Security call from the Manila office long before Covid. It’s not a new thing.
You can get your money to work for you. but I would say delay retirement a little
I have heard how they can help you make the best decisions and to be honest I don’t want to lose anymore money or I will have to work till I die.
Can I get the contact info of the person you work with?
Thanks very much Paul. That was very informative. Keep up thegood work and be blessed

Hi @almoemason Thanks for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear it was a smooth process for you.
More great information Paul, I'll be returning to the US in January to apply for mine and cross my fingers it goes well. I was married for three and a half years but have no kids so I'm hoping that will simplify things abit. Thanks again for the info.
Hi @dbrumbaugh289 Thanks for your kind words, wishing you all the best with your application!
Hi @faronray5765 Thanks for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear that your process was smooth and stress-free.

Hi @samueldavis2327 Thanks for sharing, appreciate the shoutout!
Hi @jamesnichols2511 Thank you for sharing your story and for continuing to enjoy our content!
Ali is a great guy. I'm so glad it all worked out. Crew Family Philippines
So glad Monty is doing better and back at home with his Loving wife Aragel as he can attest to how things can get bogged down and I pray for things to be smoother and as a heart attack survivor rehab is key as exercise helps get back some of the loss.. As my uncle would say: "Keep Punching"
Well Ali may be a good guy or not, we dont know...but story is pertinent...
@@3777177 well I know him personally and he’s a great guy
@@paulk8444 Thank you Paul and amen
Excellent advice gentlemen. I believe visiting the local embassy or consulate can also help with "Proof of Life" for any verification required by any US government agency.
Make an appointment & they’ll give you an appointment. When you go to your appointment, they’ll tell you what to do and after that at least for another month before you actually file. I just did mine last Nov 30 & done. I’ll be getting my first check on 3rd week of April.
Hi @SAGUARO215 Thanks for the tips! We'll keep those in mind when navigating the system.
Hi @juliogonzalez4764 Welcome to the Philippines! Glad we could connect and share some insights about life here. Best wishes on your retirement plans!
Okay,
I’m not making excuses for the officer at the Social Security office, but they deal with a lot of people daily with a few “shady” customers.
Hi @mw5673 Thanks for sharing your experience as a former federal security officer at Social Security offices! We appreciate the insight.
Great video. Subscribed 👍
Thanks for the sub!
@@paulinthephilippinesolddog9234 Thank you for a great channel. So much info on here that you share with everyone.
My husband and I have filed for our SS benefits online 5 months before our birthdays and we didn't have any problems, now we'll see if the checks will post to our accounts on the date we're supposed to get it. If all things go smoothly we will be flying to the Philippines to retire.
I'm not from the US (from Australia), but i bet you don't have to jump through as many hoops when you need to pay your taxes
Hi @anguslaing6611 That's correct, we don't have to deal with the complexity of US tax laws here. It's much simpler!
hi long time sub here, just watching and learning, but wow, this was, is a wake up call, to always, always be prepared and to plan ahead, and it is a shock to hear how something like this that can go sideways in a hearbeat, and realizing how things have changed,,,,,,, god help us,,,,
Hi @user-tn5hl6lo1m Thanks for watching! We're glad our story could serve as a reminder to plan ahead.
Very informative! Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Paul, I have the virtual mailbox to maintain a USA based address as well as a magic jack locally assigned number. My question is, since you have the same thing set up, do you get the proof of life form sent to you? Seems that letter is only for people not residing in the USA. My mother never gets that letter.
I never got one
Proof of Life is just for expats living overseas
@@paulinthephilippinesolddog9234 thank you Paul!! I guess the virtual address helps with not needing to fill that fomr out and sending it back yearly.
Thanks again for another informative video
My pleasure!
Hi @jimbo3609 Thanks for watching! We appreciate your support. Agree, treatment matters when dealing with government officials.
Hi @stevenckaroly Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear your phone appointment went smoothly.
Hi @tonya2583 Thanks for sharing your experience! We've had similar ease with our SS application process.
How do you access your Navy Federal Credit Union account while there in the Philippines?
I access online. Plus twice they have called me here to verify charges.I have a Magic Jack number. Both times they called me in the middle of the night and I just called back later. I have my Remitly account attached to my Navy Federal Debit card. I transfer cash to Cebuana when I need it. I have used the debit card at hotels. I did need to upgrade Remitly to the second tier. I can easily go online to chek all of my accounts. The second step verification can be done by email or Magic Jack. Almost 2 years and never had a single problem.
Hi @lavonyoung2366 Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear everything went smoothly for you.
Hi @riffraff521 Thanks for sharing your experience! We've had a similar smooth process here in Dumaguete too!
Salam Ali 👍🏽👍🏽
Wish You The Best
And thank you Big Paul 👍🏽
Big thanks
Alright Paul I’ve been watching you and other Duma vloggers for years. I sold everything and flew from Panama City Florida to Cebu on Wednesday, December 6th. I stayed a the Belmont for a week then signed a six month’s lease in Mactan at 8 Newtown Place. After the holidays the plan is to come and visit Dumaguete and hopefully run into some of the vloggers I’ve been following. Sorta broke some of the vlogger rules and met a girl at the airport. However, she’s been vested through her sister in the states and two years of correspondence.
Hi @piccity Welcome to the Philippines! We're glad you made the move. Good luck with your new life here!
I filed for my social security online in 2021 before moving to the Philippines. Received my first payment as expected and have not had any problems.
Hi @patrickh709 Thanks for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear it went smoothly for you.
Good info. Thank you.🙂
Hi @markpurcell1488 You're welcome!
Yes they do phone interview even I have a layer I just got my ssdi this year it will be a year to process so be patient.
Hi @mariavarnas960 Thanks for sharing your experience! We'll keep that in mind for our own application.
Actually SS changed that about the doctors notifying Soc Sec when you die. Now SS wants you to call 30 days in advance of death to get the paperwork rolling. Then they do a follow up call 30 days after you die to make sure you haven't filled out the paperwork incorrectly.
Hahaha
😂
You’re a trolling clown
But you will get back once you get it I got mine but I hired a lawyer it's a big help.
Why would your child be requiring a SS number? Was the child born in the US? If not then quit trying to scam the system.
Mr. Paul,
I heard him say he had to have all the paper work like Birth cert. Ss card ect.
I have a 800 number you call and it takes like 10 or 15 minutes max and they tell you what you will get. They asked when do you want to start it ect.
Then they tell you a date when you will get a call back and what time .. don't miss it because they don't call back.. it's very simple... if you want it let me know so you can pass it on
Hi @mikepedersen0897 Thanks for sharing, helpful tip!
I applied Sept.7th this year, finally approved Dec.7th. Did it online, no issues.
Hi @kennethkilpatrick3758 Congrats on getting approved! Online application worked smoothly for you, great to hear!
The takeaway is to take care of your social security benefits before moving to the Philippines
Hi @joeyorencia4120 Thanks for sharing! We'll definitely keep that in mind.
I didn't have any problems filing for mine but I did mine back in 2014.
I gave Social Security my Thai address. I get the proof of life letters every couple of years. I got one a couple of months ago.
Hi @mrwaterbearer4261 We've had no issues with proof of life or documents, but our checks are also deposited in a US bank.
😆
Applied 60 days ago, still waiting for a telephone interview from the Embassy in Manilla as they no longer do face to face appointments. Anyway, I then applied online and they want certain documents. I have them but then Im supposed to mail them and Im in the Philippines. The mail to the USA will take months. Why can't I present them in person to the embassy? Like others have mentioned, when I did call the Embassy the guy was so rude. I have no idea how this is going to play out now.
Hi @jonrend Thanks for sharing your experience. We've had similar issues with bureaucracy here too. Hopefully, things work out smoothly for you!
@paulinthephilippinesolddog9234 Yeah, it went fine. The trick for me was to complete the online application as that is then directly referred back to the Philippine Embassy to pick up the ball and complete the process, which they did. I sent all necessary documents to them, which they returned via courier.
