Without a doubt, this may be the best video you have ever done. Your honesty and the way you put things verbally is fantastic and touched me. Baby Mae is lucky to have you and visa versa. And, being 81 I can relate to the aging bit. The last two years has seen a lowering of energy, strength, and endurance. Stay healthy, love alot, and be safe. Much love to you guys.

I like the fact that you spared us the suspense by telling us your eventual decision early on the video. I think more vloggers should follow your lead. Often times I just skip watching a video that just drags the point to the very end as a way to secure a captive audience. I don't have time for that shit so I just end my viewing and move on to the next vlogger. Your style suits me just fine Paul. Thank you for being innovative.

I have been here 3 years, moved here in March 2020... I have a Filipina Gf I met on line.... .. I visited in December 2019, it seemed great... It was... First thing I did was buy a new car .. about 20k US... I thought about Thailand, but the language... Now it's her family, who I love..That keeps me here...35 family members came to our (yes big) house last Christmas.. Expecting the same this year.. 99% of the filipinos I have met are some of the kindest/ friendliest people ever,,, I have NO regrets.. GOOD CHOICE, IMO !

Hi Paul, when you move to a different Country or place of stay for your future, expectations should not be the first priority. You have relocated from the USA to the Philippines with one goal in mind: to live your life in better circumstances. Stay put, you are a stone's throw away from Thailand to come and enjoy your holidays whenever you want, and as long as you want, you have that freedom. In my opinion, this option is the better one, considering what awaits is always different. Yes, there will be differences that matter, but is the change really going to be worth it.

I rode motorcycles since I was 16, I’m 73 now, I bought a brand new Honda 125 when I came here in March. I saw the driving skills here and never got on the bike, went to Cebu and bought a used Toyota Camry, best money I’ve spent here, our abilities are definitely reduced with age and I figured that any stay in a hospital would probably cost as much as the car, be safe😊

EXERCISE...!!! I moved to Thailand at the age of 57, 19 years ago. In the US I had been active, so was in good overall health, but did have minor bursitis, arthritis and sciatica. Coming to Asia made me more active, and I started a program of daily exercise with weights - light duty, no Arnold's level.. Today, yes, I still have the occasional pain, but much less than when I wa 57. I walk a couple of kilometers every day and exercise for a half hour every morning. Nothing special, just trying to keep up with my teenage daughters.

My brother retired from the Navy when was nearly 40 years old. He moved back to the Philippines cause he loved it there. Now that he is 75 years old, he has to move back to the US because as Paul says, the medical system in the Philippines is subpar. Doctors over there are not liable for malpractice so if they screw up, it's not their fault attitude. When my brother was diagnosed with cancer the two doctors in the Philippines told him he only had 6 months to live. He flew back to California and went to the City of Hope for cancer treatment. That was in 2015 and to this day he is still alive. My brother can vouch for what Paul is saying.

It is just too entertaining to see the Thai women interacting with Mai and vice versa. Yes indeed, Mai likes to expose some skin because it frees her inhibited stifled self from years of mousedom. Your comparisons are pretty much spot on. I spent 15yrs travelling Thailand and can relate to most of your points.
The biggest differences for me is the food, as you say, PH has such a boring menu taste wise, the culture is more vibrant than PH and I've noticed the service is getting worse in PH. Travel is easier in Thailand due to majority of the country being mainland compared to the islands of PH, plus being from the UK they drive on the correct side of the road haha. But I love the choice of islands in PH. For me having spent time in both, I'd prefer to stay in PH and cook my own Thai food.

Philippines was a US colony until 1946, hence widespread English language. But it was a Spanish colony for 300 years prior to 1896. Thailand was never colonised and the culture is more Indianised (Buddhism), so it’s more mysterious and exotic to Westerners.

    Especially the Ending.
You talk About the People, and the Compassion and the Friendly Attitude, etc.
That My Friend, Is Exactly why , On my Very First Visit, and Subsequent Visits, I knew I had Actually Come Home.
It's Maybe Difficult for Others to Understand, Until you Experience it. I'm not Born there,Not Raised there, But I really Have this Feeling I was Meant to Be There.
Yes, The Philippines has Many Drawbacks. The Infrastructure being A Huge Part of that, But From outside Observations, I can See they have Been Working to Modernize This . 1 City just Recently Completed Putting All Their Electric Lines underground. That Alone, Improved the Appearance of the Entire City, while maybe Protecting it a Bit from the Ravages of Rough Weather, Like Typhoons.
I've Experienced their Medical Care, But my Experience was a Good one. Is it A Great Place in that Respect? Not yet, But I hear they Are Working in a 911 System similar to America's.
That Could Take A Long time to Achieve, But would Really Bring the Country into it's Own .
Thanks for the Video 😊🙏 Wishing Great Days Ahead for you And Mae.

Excellent analysis Paul. Right now, I'm in the part of the video where you're discussing driving. I actually think you would acclimate - except in an emergency when it really counts. Then muscle memory is likely to take over - and you will have to readjust your thinking at the very moment when split seconds count.
It has never occurred to me until now that the little bit of difference in our ages (I'm about 3 years older) might determine different points of view on decisions you're now making. For example, the scooter vs a car. I rode motorcycles many different times in my life, loved them. But some years back, I got on one a friend was going to sell me - and felt nothing but exposed on it. The thrill was gone. A beautiful bike, but all I could think about was how my body would take it if I went down. Or my legs if a car didn't see me or I made a mistake. So I was always a bit surprised that you hung onto the scooter this long, but now I get it.
[Later] Language. You covered that right after, that was foremost in my mind, especially when you were talking about living away from the city. Although it's good for your brain to exercise it and learn another language. But...maybe Spanish instead, which is easier and there's lots of cultural (and religious) similarities (thanks Spain) between Latin America and the Philippines. I too, have looked at Ecuador - but I'm slowly looking at each SA country, liking different things about each one.
My wife is Filipina. I concluded like you have, that P.I. could be a home base and visit all over SE Asia. But I'm less sure of that now, and I finally got around to getting VA health care, and am more reluctant to give that up as I continue to age.
Good video Paul. I don't watch you for a quick snack - I come for the full menu, LOL.

If you haven’t heard it before then let me be the first to tell you. Thai people are good people and friendly. There’s a big language barrier but don’t let that confuse you. There are good and bad people everywhere and in all races. I think much of it has to do with where you choose to hang out. My Filipino wife loves Thailand and would live there too. Fortunately it’s just a short trip to visit there from the Philippines.

Another major factor for a SINGLE man who may want to decide between the Philippines and Thailand, is with that culture gap, it’s much harder to find a real romantic connection in Thailand, which is often determined only by the size of your bank account. In the Philippines, where most people speak English, it’s much easier to gauge the true motives of a woman your dating.

Hi Paul. Thank you for this honest and heartfelt discussion. You're right, the culture and character of people in different locations makes all the difference. And it really depends what's important to you "at the time". Our needs and expectations also change over time, as you mentioned in the video. There's no single or "right" answer.
Looking forward to more from you and Baby Mae ... wherever you end up. No need to hurry, amigo, take your time and enjoy your life in the now, day by day.

    Paul:
Thanks for the insight and the pros and cons of Thailand and the Philippines. It was very informative.
Personally the idea of the community aspect of the people would have me sold as well, everyone cares about everyone, that just doesn't happen here in Canada. Too many entitled people over here and I'm really hoping for a change in my financial future so that I can pull the trigger on going to the Philippines myself. Thanks to your channel, Pea's channel and a few other channels that I watch regularly, I have a decent understanding about what I could be in for once I get to pull the trigger, hopefully sooner than later.
As far as you making PH your home base, and traveling around for a while, I had already figured that would be what you would end up doing anyway. Even though I have only been subscribed a short time on your channel, I am pretty good at reading people and figuring out where they are coming from and going to in their conversations with pretty accurate conclusions. Like you, I don't like giving "advise" but if someone asks my opinion, I will give them a few options to chose from, and let them make the decision on their own.

If everyone cared about everyone else in the Philippines the country wouldn't be so corrupt at all levels. Have you ever wondered why so many Filipinos want to escape and live in the United States and Canada? You want to give up your Canadian health care system for what passes for health care in the Philippines? Have you ever been to the Philippines?

Hey Paul I thought for sure you both would settle in Thailand. It's a big surprise, but your reasons are rock solid.
Language being the most difficult but if you find a Thai friend who can translate.. problem solved. Medical is way better in Thailand including emergency vehicles. Prices and food better and cheaper in Thailand.
The most important thing you said was Connection. That's the big huge plus for the Philippines. The people are always friendly, children respectful and they will share whatever little they have with expats. Infact having been all over the World, Philippines will always be that special Country.
Getting a car, best decision ever. In any accident, right or wrong vs motorcycle, the car always wins. In a car, you walk away. On a motorcycle they carry you to a waiting emergency vehicle.
It's always More Fun In The Philippines 💘

I was glad hear your take on the experience in Thailand while you were there. I drew the same conclusion that when you visit as a tourist, it is not the same as when you get down to living your daily lives. The fairytale will solidify into reality and decisions should be based on facts vs feelings alone.
I'll be interested to see your vid on getting a car as the wife and I are still planning to retire in Cebu city. Practically speaking the Toyota Hylux seems like a good choice due to the road infrastructure and the ability for it carry whatever you need in the cab or bed of the truck. Happy Trails from sunny & stormy Florida. That was an excellent show! I am 68 now and still work 5 days a week. I may retire to the Philippines in the next year. Your comment about driving in Thailand, Myanmar and Japan being they drive on the other side of the road hits home with me. Imagine shifting a manual with your left hand. Just feels odd to me because of how I grew up driving. There is no reason for the Philippines to be behind in infrastructure. It is a shame. Maybe it will improve. I will come there, base myself on the Island and roam from there. Lets have a Magical Day.

    • @therussmeister
      @therussmeister ปีที่แล้ว

I think there's a very good reason for the Philippines to be behind in infrastructure. Typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, they get it all! Plus the occasional volcano. They have to spend too much effort rebuilding. Thailand very rarely gets earthquakes and by the time the typhoons reach Thailand they have been downgraded to a tropical storm. Only a small slice of Thailand is vulnerable to Tsunamis.

Tough decision for sure, but the medicine in the Philippines is challenged at best unless you do St. Luke’s, Asian Medical and handful of others. But my take is you made the right call. You can always jump on a plane at anytime to visit and have fun.

Paul you are wise beyond your years. Even just five of them! My wife was born and raised in Malate and even as a college student, her uncle who was a policeman, would raise hell with her if he found out she even took a trike to get someplace in a hurry. His reason: "You get bumped (Like your friend on his scooter who could have easily lost his wife and child), and chances are, you're GONE. In a car or truck, you've at least got some protection and a chance." This is one of the most insightful and important vlogs you've ever done and you should put it in your Greatest Hits section if you ever get around to making one. It's so tempting to hop on a scooter or take a trike or even a rented people mover, but at 60, I'm just not quick enough these days to respond appropriately in an emergency situation, which is why I gave up my beloved Yamaha Venture Royale 1200cc, which had more than enough power to get me out of a situation, but that was back in the day. At this age, the situation has already happened before I even know about it, so we'll be getting a car AND a driver when we retire to BGC or wherever. Thanks again for reminding me that my wife is always right when it comes to her homeland. Cheers to you and Mae!

I 100% agree with your conclusions. I was planning to retire in Thailand but after visiting the Philippines to attend a mates wedding, I discovered the major advantage of the Philippines over Thailand, to some degree English is spoken everywhere. Whereas in Thailand it is mainly in the cities and tourist areas that English is spoken. I spent 6 weeks in a village in Lampang Province in central Thailand and there were only 4 people in the village who spoke English including myself and I don't include the English teacher at the local school because his English was unintelligible, and he knew it, so he avoided me. Those were the loneliest 6 weeks of my life.
Also, the cities and tourist areas are the most expensive places to live in Thailand.
Don't kid yourself about Mae not being stared at and gossiped about in Thailand. Once you get out of the Cities and Tourist areas, the Thai people are just as bad as the Philippines with regards to being judgmental and gossiping about others.

Paul, you never cease to amaze me. You touched on the very things that I am considering right now (including the loss of balance thing, believe it or not).
Although I only intend to visit southeast Asia for some months each year, I have the same considerations and have been going back and forth for some time now trying to whittle down which to go to first and how much time to spend in each. The issue of food keeps pushing me towards Thailand but everything else says the Philippines.
Because of the weather I have also pushed back the idea of a future departure time from the states from September to November. I imagine that after I spend some time in each things will begin to sort themselves out.
