People talk about Billy Mumy, a great child actor. Should also be talking about Claud Raines the 'Invisible Man' in Hitchcock movies such as 'Suspicion.' A Star and great actor! He did an excellent ep of radios 'Suspence' with Vincent Price 'The Hands of Mr. Otaman.' They were great in it and it was a great story.

Wow! Claude Rains! The Oscar-winning actor's career veered more into TV as he (and the Hollywood system) got older, but it's always wonderful to see a master ply his craft like he does here. Rains was 72 years old when this was produced in 1961. He worked continuously until he died about five years later. This is a wonderful story by Norm Daniels adapted for TV by Emmy-nominated Irving Elman.
Trivia: Bill Mumy, who was seven years old here and played the little boy, and John Larch, who played the desk sergeant, also worked together in the iconic Twilight Zone episode "It's a Good Life," where everyone gets "wished into the corn field," and which was produced shortly before this episode of AHP.

This has to be one of my favorites. Brings back old memories of the police I once knew. You had access there was no bullet proof glass to peer through. They were truly peacekeeps and not law enforcers. They kept the peace . What a shame, those days are gone forever. I have always respected the police but there is not that bond that existed before where I grew up. So impersonal and act more like military instead of police on foot patrol. Imagine if Child Protective Services came they would place the boy in a home with high risk abuse. This old man could now be a grandfather to this child. What a beautiful ending thanks to this policeman.

This kind of thing happened to me about 55 years ago lol My mum was taking me to my granny’s house about 90 minutes away from where we lived. About half way there, she stopped for gas, I was a great traveller, asleep (almost before the car left the drive) in the back seat. When the car stopped, I came to, and got out to use the washroom. This will tell me age, but it was UNLOCKED lol, on the outside of the building!! I came out in time to see her driving away. The attendant said “not to worry, she’d be back once she realized I wasn’t in the back seat”. I kinda looked dubiously at him thinking “I sure hope so!” Lol The ONLY thing that alerted her (before she’d got all the way to my grandmother’s) to my not being in the car, was I hadn’t fully closed the door on the car, and it was rattling as she drove. She turned around to tell me to shut the door, and I can only imagine the scare, when she saw I wasn’t there. Today, she’d be investigated for child neglect, and I might not have even been there when she came roaring back to collect me. Lol the look on her face!

This was interesting but the title didn't quite fit the story unless there is a big chunk of this story missing, otherwise I really liked it.

Wow. You'd never get away with that in these times! Old man just takes the young boy home with him and no one says anything.

It's certainly off-putting to watch that in today's times, isn't it? I keep trying to tell myself that those were more innocent days/etc., but was there really a time when such a thing could occur without at least a LITTLE more investigation? lol.
I was creeped out when the man put his hands on the boy almost immediately and again, had to remind myself that it wasn't uncommon at all in those days to show basic affection. Still...

@@jonas3333 It's not uncommon now to show affection. It's people like you who twist everything into some perverted priest fantasy.

You'll never see a citizen friendly police station like that again, they are all fortresses designed to isolate and keep staff unreachable and you, in a sense, imprisoned. When I was a kid, growing up in the fifties, our local cop shop was actually warm, friendly, and open to visitors who just wanted to see the inside. I got a plastic badge that said "Investigator" or "Detective", on one visit, really cool for a kid to have, and the patrolman- yep, walked a beat- pretty much knew who the players were on his part of town. That began to change with "The New Centurions" and more reality shows like "Cops"- nowadays every episode of every law enforcement show is about "sparking bullets" and 120 pound female cops facing off and taking down BUFF 230 POUND THUGS- fantasy stretched beyond credulity.

It's only an excerpt from the original teleplay, which would have revealed why the title. Too bad; I would have liked to see it in its entirety. Love Claude Rains.

I took it to be a metaphor- both the boy and the man (the doors) are missing a vital component in their lives (a key/loved ones).
