Sorry, I need to go off topic a bit. Did you end up ordering the 2018 Ryoga? It has just been in stock since yesterday and I have already ordered one. And a Singaporean guy just posted the world's first unboxing and table top review of the reel. He pulled out his own Conquest to compare and said Daiwa's Hyper Mesh Gearing is on a totally different level to Shimano's Micro Module Gearing as in it is far smoother. You might want to look into it. th-cam.com/video/r1OkYYYH1BE/w-d-xo.html
Absolute gold! Best review on BFS I have seen.....I have a Conquest BFS arriving next week, but that Shimano Trout One rod looks like it will be next on the list. This BFS stuff is sending me broke as well! Awesome stuff.....thanks again for taking the time to make these vids!
Thanks for the time you put into this. Didn't expect the XF50 to win but nice to see that a reel that cheap, which I ordered to get into BFS, is at least respectable.
As long as you are in the upper range of BFS the XF50 does surprisingly well. I just got a super affordable rod to pair it up with, be on the lookout for that video soon
Thanks to all your bfs vids I have ordered a scorpion bfs xg 2 months ago and a kuying Teton awesome rod by the way. Now I’ve ordered a 16 aldebaran bfs and a kuying leadership light casting rod for sea bass. Thanks for all your in-depth reviews and shootouts.
Another budget option is a used previous model reel by Daiwa or Shimano or even Abu Garcia (most fisherman will already have one) with the appropriate model DIY Spool (available on eBay and AliExpress) for around $50. The spools usually weight between 7-10g without bearings. The ones I have work great in my old TDZ and Tatula CT.
I think it is great you tested these big brand overpriced reels. What your test proved is the big name reel companies are more talk than walk. They all should look long and hard at any reel that costs a tenth of the price ever being able to sit on the same table as their best of the line. The average angler is never going to buy $450 dollar reels and then sink another couple hundred into spools and bearing. However, a reel costing $48 dollars and a rod in that same price range that performs as the Tsurinoya XF-50 is in everyones price range. This to me is the winner of this contest. The Japanese were building ultralight casting reels in the 80’s. I saw them and held a few myself. I met two Anglers that had brought back from Japan 4 very custom-made outfits they used for fishing Walleye in Lake Erie and fishing for Stripers in Chesapeake Bay. The rods were around ten-feet long. All handmade jobs costing them a big bundle. They were both trying to set new line records for the IFGA 2-pound line class. A few bits of interesting history for your reading TH-camrs Ponder using 2-pound line and landing a 15-pound largemouth 1990 Robert Crupi awarded the IGFA conventional tackle record for 4lb. line catching a largemouth bass weighing 17-pounds 1oz. Bait used Mud-Suckers & Crayfish. 1990 Robert Crupi awarded the IGFA conventional tackle record for 12lb. line catching a largemouth bass weighing 21-pounds Bait used Mud-Suckers & Crayfish. 1992 Robert Crupi awarded the IGFA conventional tackle record for 2lb. line catching a largemouth bass weighing 14-pounds 12oz. Bait used Mud-Suckers & Crayfish. Enough said: PS: A tip form Uncle Don: Buy yourself a ten dollar line counter on E-Bay and you can save yourself a lot wasted time.
Great comparison! Nice to see these go head to head. Heres a tip for you: How about an avail spool for the regular aldebaran? Then you have a superlight spool i believe 6,5 gram with bearing, and adjustable sentrifugal force. Best of both worlds?....
Have the Yumeya BFS spool (9.2g) for the 2015 Aldebaran with HH Air bearings. It's nice, but I feel there is still some room left to cast super light lures. The Avail or KTF spool would most likely be better choices if you want to cast all the way down to 1/16oz. Currently waiting for the Alphas Air Stream Custom to decide whether I'll get the 2016 Aldebaran BFS or the latter for a true UL outfit.
I understand. Just wanted to mention that there is an extreme lightweigth, externally adjustable sentrifugal braked spool option for a reel that you already have in your arsenal... This came to mind when the old alde. bfs did so well in the shootout... www.hedgehog-studio.co.jp/product/2745
This is a great video! Very informative. Keep up the good work! I am a big fan. Also just wanted you to know. After watching this, I found a New 15’ Aldebaran BFS Limited. It is on its way here from Japan. 👍🏻
thanks brother! I guess I never realized how good the 15 Limited casted until I put it up against other reels. Stay tuned, I have something coming in from Japan :)
Very good test you provided. You mentioned some of the reels were not “braid” line compatible. Too bad so sad. I would expect to see numbers for 4# braided line to far surpass any of your test numbers with mono. Mono is thicker and has memory which I consider a poor trait for finesse. Fluoro maybe. Any possibility of doing the Shimanos again with braided or fluorocarbon? Just prefer braid myself. I suppose I am considered a power angler by some. Thanks. I do appreciate the time you share with us. PS My butt would be dragging running back and forth all all day
The latest reels have a difference in the flight distance of lighter lures. The latest reels fly well with a weight of 0.8-1.5g. When it weighs more than 3g, it is no different from the old reel
really enjoyed the shoot-out....do you think the old diawa liberto pixy would hang with these new guys......i have not fished light-weight stuff in many years , but getting the fever again.........thanks for the video.
from what Ive seen of its spool weight no. These new reels have much lighter spools than the pixy. But I know you have alot of spool options for the pixy if you like that body style.
thanks for your fast response !!.....i have two pixys , one with upgraded spool and bearings....but i am really liking these new reels....i am new to your site , so i will have to go through your videos to make up my mind on which one i want , next........allen.
Maybe you can try the Casitas with ray's studio shallow spool for the SVS centrifugal brake with finer adjustment. Its quit a cheap setup at around $150 including the upgraded spool.
Great work! Even for non-BFS guys like me, it's quite interesting. About the Centrifugal brake vs Magnetic brake, could it be that the traditional centrifugal force comes from physical friction, which becomes unstable when lure weight decrease, yet magnetic brake force is equally stable no matter the lure weight?
So it's similar to Magforce Z. But still, no physical friction, right? No contact with any metal rings in the sideplate. I think that's why this FTB is more stable no matter the lure weight. For traditional centrifugal brake system, it just seems to me that a lot factors can affect the friction force, surface smoothness, spool vibration, even temperature and moisture if we really want to get down to it. None of these factors matter much when the lure weight is high, but when the lure weight gets down to certain point, they just start to affect the brake force stability. I am not engineer, or into BFS. Just my thoughts.
It is similiar but what makes me wonder is in logic the heavier lure should trigger the brake faster but lighter lure wont do the same thing thus consistency distance. Maybe it is because there is a brake on the spool prevent it to rotate freely and it is the same case as in magforce.
Yeah, how does lure weight affect the brake force in a centrifugally induced magnetic brake system, it's a whole other topic to discuss. I am just trying to compare this FTB system to the traditional centrifugal system, whose brake force relies on physical friction. And try to figure out why it excels on 1/8 oz, but lose the edge to the FTB system on the 1.7 gram lure.
Unfortunately light is also cheap. And as lightness rules the day in bfs, what I’ve found out about these 50 dollar reels is that for the MOST part they start running rough after just a few outings. The Piscifun Alloy M is one of the few cheap reels that rivals a lot of 150-200 dollar reels. I’m using one for winter steelhead right now. Has an amazingly smooth, yet super strong drag. I’ve landed 2 chinook on accident with it!
They do not come off, i recommend that you turn them all on first by pushing each block down towards the center of the spool. then i would start out by turning half of them on by taking your finger nail and pulling them up until you feel it click. then you should be able to move the brake block up and down and see the movement.
Hey man. Another great video as always. Like most, I do all of my finesse fishing on a spinning setup. I'd like to start finessing with a casting reel from time to time. What are your top 5 finesse casting reels? What are your favourites? I guess I'm an "advanced" angler. Fishing most of my life and own over 25 casting reels alone. Thanks man!
Guessing its a US preference, I think its very uncommon in Europe and Asia to fish with mono, specially that thick on a BFS setup. Regardless of this detail, good job on the video.
Love ur video so much about the bfs that I have to get me one got that Aldebaran BFS having use yet still thinking what rods is best for it .what rods do u recommend the reel test thank bro appreciate it
Hi ! First of all thank you for all your work on this ! But I have a question, I can’t decide wich one to choose between daiwa ss air or shimano aldebaran from 2012 but got upgraded with hedgehog stuff and aivail microcast spool. Thank’s !
You need to do a gofundme so all of us can pitch in $1 and you can get some big spools of braid instead of that yellow ass line you keep using, lol. This way you can move the line from reel to reel without coils and in the long run might save you some money anyways. If you don't fish much with it and use it for testing the line would last you years.
THE REEL TEST it's nothing like that, I'm sure plenty of people would pitch in who would rather see some tests done with braid. If u don't want to do gofundme set up a patreon through TH-cam maybe?
LOL patreon is pretty much begging for money though. On the next big test I may buy one spool and just transfer from one reel to another if the capacities are similiar or even try Gliss. But the point is, I rarely use braid, and at least around here, I rarely see people use braid. The line I used was pretty coil free because I spooled all the reels up before leaving for the test field.
Hi, my name is Massimiliano Martini and I write from Italy. I have a Majort Kraft casting bait mod. Fax-B642UL, with g-1-5 launch power. I would like to know from you that you are an expert, which coil would fit to my rod. Can you help me ? I thank you in advance. Best regards Massimiliano Martini
hi, just want to ask your opinion. Do you think next year(2019) SHIMANO will come out with new BFS lpc? So far Shimano only have 2 reel for ultra finesse lpc, while daiwa have around 5 reels (Alphas air, Alphas air stream custom SS air, SS air stream custom and T3-Air ) what do you think?

love the review and best on youtube my friend "" but would have bean better on a longer BFS rod say 6ft4- to 7ft as how many people really use there BFS reel with a 5ft trout rod ? not in Europe and UK id say buddy" and id have loved to see the new Daiwa 2018 SV Light against all those shimanos because that ss-air is way old know and this new sv-light must be a lot better than the old ss-air buddy " And just don't like that round BFS shimano it looked really out of place on that tiny rod to me
THE REEL TEST I Understand we all have our opinion. In my experience the Z has been the best for me. Not only distance but accuracy. One handed flips to 2 handed bomb, never have to worry about any kind of backlash or malfunctioning. 22lb drag is crazy. With the outer brake on 6 and the inside brake adjusted correctly even the smallest crank bait or any other tiny lures have performed perfect. I think a lot goes into different fishing styles when it comes to casting and smoothness. I’ll rephrase my comment. For me it’s the best all around.
The fact that you are even trying to compare the Concept Z with these very specialized finesse baitcasters shows me you dont know anything. Also my "opinions" are backed with evidence. Evidence that I have experience with a huge array of different reels of all different price points.
Maybe you can try the Casitas with ray's studio shallow spool for the SVS centrifugal brake with finer adjustment. Its quit a cheap setup at around $150 including the upgraded spool.

Bonjour tu as fait une super vidéo avec beaucoup de test . Good job
salut jai pas compris le quel est le best ?
Imvho it’s going to the Calcutta. As the reel can do what it does, as well as handle MANY other techniques.
you should do this again with all of your new reels. Also what are your thoughts on the Abu Garcia Revo ALC BF7

About the Centrifugal brake vs Magnetic brake, could it be that the traditional centrifugal force comes from physical friction, which becomes unstable when lure weight decrease, yet magnetic brake force is equally stable no matter the lure weight?

Very good test 👍
Shimano the best..!!!
Very smooth..
Don't know how many times I've watched this but I'm just here for background music.
Any reason why you did not use braided line, I feel like its an important detail that got left out.
because I dont use braid.
Guessing its a US preference, I think its very uncommon in Europe and Asia to fish with mono, specially that thick on a BFS setup. Regardless of this detail, good job on the video.
thank you.
Great test
What abaut a Tailwalk japan baitcaster in the you'rs test empty..
My favorite is Tailwalk superElan mgl microtyns..ia a real finese reel
What are the benefits of using a baitcaster for finesse rather than spinning?
Preference mostly, some say the control of the lure and where it goes. But I prefer casting reels over spinning, control my lures alot better.
U have a new Sub....i enjoy your videos.👍
Can you do a MGL reel battle just like the $99 reel battle?

Shimano is a reliable and high quality reel throughout the decades. Corrosion free after 35 years!
You are missing the Abu Garcia Revo LTZ AE74-Racing. I would like to see that one against other reels
Jose Espitia He stated on the video that he forgot and need to save some to buy it
I believe the LTZ has been discontinued for awhile? Plus the new LTX seems to have a way lighter spool.

abu garcia looks like a doyo coba rainbow 3 but with cheaper parts on it...
Is that aldebaran modified?
You wouldn’t happen to have the user manual for your Shimano 15 aldebaran bf xg????? Lol
hi,
just want to ask your opinion.
Do you think next year(2019) SHIMANO will come out with new BFS lpc?
So far Shimano only have 2 reel for ultra finesse lpc, while daiwa have around 5 reels (Alphas air, Alphas air stream custom SS air, SS air stream custom and T3-Air )
what do you think?
I dont know, I doubt it though, too many BFS reels is redundant.
@@THEREELTEST understand.. thanks
Sorry for my curiousity but do you find any trouble or difficulty when pitching crank bait with the Limited vs FTB? Coz i am about to buy the Limited
Ive never pitched a crankbait in my life lol. Shimanos can pitch, just keep the spool tension loose
Nice video ... but my aldebaran 16 bfs cast better vs 15 limited i test them whit 0.8 japan braid
Ivan Raikov
I have 16 too but hey at least it consistently won at rank 2
Cho mình con abu độ kia đi
can you do budget reel contest?
sara z he already did, he did the $100 reel shootout
He could do a better one TBH. Grab a Piscifun, Black Max, Kast King, SIXGILL, and a LIXDA and other 50 dollar reels
Paul Mailliard we already know the black max and the piscifun will be the top two choices
Brian Villasenor really? I have a piscifun, a Kast king and a black max... I only like the kast king out of the 3.
Paul Mailliard all personal preference, I live the black max myself
LOL I just watched again for the rainbow colored reel and just caught you saying fanboys triggered
Just buy the QUANTUM Smoke S3 PT. The baddest baitcaster reel on the market. Could the world's best touring bass fisherman be wrong! No way! Its not about how much you spend on a reel. But if it does what you want it to do. Shawn

alot

I can hear the wind on the mic, test results were likely affected.
2:38 Calcutta rolled in disgust when the tsurinoya passed by. Lol
I redid your test and for kicks I threw in my $100 Casitas and it won
Upgraded spool and bearings of course.
What happens with the quality
Good test except one major flaw , is having a reel that was discontinued
FACT: You get what you pay for! The most expensive reel (Shimano Aldebaran Limited) wins!
love the review and best on youtube my friend "" but would have bean better on a longer BFS rod say 6ft4- to 7ft as how many people really use there BFS reel with a 5ft trout rod ? not in Europe and UK id say buddy" and id have loved to see the new Daiwa 2018 SV Light against all those shimanos because that ss-air is way old know and this new sv-light must be a lot better than the old ss-air buddy " And just don't like that round BFS shimano it looked really out of place on that tiny rod to me
Different class, all the BFS on table able to cast 2g crankbait. SV light can't even reach the range of those reel
I want to win
compare the Shimano BFS reels with the Shimano Stradic spinning reel. for light lures, spinning is suppose to be better.
Please remove or turn down this music. Take a poll and see if anybody likes it.
Keep the music. It doesn't interfere with hearing the narration and helps create some interest. I like it.
I love it
Boy these companies are making money on these so called finesse baitcasters just pick up a spinning reel for lighter lures i don't get it
Daiwa fanboys triggered. 😂🤣
Bad music same thing million times makes crazy
but of course you will keep watching lol
13 fishing z concept destroys all of these reels. no comparison
no it does not
THE REEL TEST I Understand we all have our opinion.
What????? 😁😁😁😁😁
Maybe you can try the Casitas with ray's studio shallow spool for the SVS centrifugal brake with finer adjustment. Its quit a cheap setup at around $150 including the upgraded spool.

I took a look and I dont like how you have to take the brake shoes off the old spool. I have a shallow spool on the way for the 15 Aldebaran
Yes, that is true and downside of that spool.. aldebaran 15 with shallow spool seems like a very nice setup
