    We've all heard of hysterectomies, but when do you actually need one? With the help of Michelle, one of my incredible hysterectomy patients, we created a video to give you insight on when you or someone you know may need a hysterectomy. Check out my new video for more information about:
    1) When and why a hysterectomy is needed.
    2) Michelle’s hysterectomy recovery story after a robotic hysterectomy.
    3) How a hysterectomy can enhance overall women's health for the right patients.
    4) Michelle’s experience as a patient of Doctor Rich!

    Ugh! My experience was awful. At 38 I finally was approved for a hysterectomy. I was told it would only be an hour and a half surgery. It ended up being 4 hours and I was never told why. After my surgery I was put into a room with a 90 year old dementia patient who had lost control of her bowels. She was doing things to my IV machine while I was sleeping and I couldn’t get away from her. My room was covered in feces so I said I was leaving. Well the nurses threatened to phone the police on me and have me arrested if I took out my IV!!! I had to call my doctor and beg him for help. I am traumatized by the experience and would rather die than ever end up in the hospital for any reason ever again! 😢

      That's awful! I'm so sorry you experienced that! That's not a common experience and I'd hate to see you risk your health and quality of life because of an unusually bad experience. I've had several surgeries and everything around them has been full of kindness and concern for my well being. Except for making me fast almost 2x longer than necessary when I had afternoon surgery. Ask friends where they've had good experiences and check them out instead of denying yourself needed care. You deserve to be whole and healthy!❤

    You, Dr. Rich literally saved my life by allowing and performing my total hysterectomy.
    I was 23 with no kids and endometriosis took over my life. I had surgery after surgery and you were on my side about having the hysterectomy.

    I had a partial hysterectomy (I retained my cervix and ovaries) 4 years ago, with keyhole surgery. I had 5 entry points, the three shown in the video and another 2 lower down. There are no scars, and apart from my daughter telling me it was weird because my belly button looks like normal bellybutton... but it doesn't look like my bellybutton no one would know I had surgery at all.
    My surgeon is amazing and he and all the staff took excellent care of me, and I will never be able to thank them enough for everything they did for me.
    Not being in pain is incredible!!
    After my surgery the nurses kept asking me for a pain rating 1 to 5 and I was 0.
    It took a year for me to be 100% but I was back at work 4 weeks later and able to do most things after 3 months.
    I had Indometrosis, I am not sure if you call it something else, but it is when the lining grows inside the muscular wall of the uterus and then has to tear through to come out. It is a degenerative disease, so gets worse over time.
    I had issues since my first period at 11. They were extremely heavy, lasted 10-14 days and beyond painful!! I was anaemic for most of my life, would often be in so much pain I would turn white, faint or throw up. I felt like I was being torn apart (which it turns out I was).
    The hardest part though is getting doctors to take you seriously.
    For years I was told I was exaggerating, or hysterical and that all women get cramps and although i had heavy periods it was normal, for many years I was also told my anaemia wasn't caused by the excessive bleeding (although that did change eventually).
    I am allergic to codeine so managed my pain with paracetamol and ibuprofen, as I was undiagnosed, and no one really took me seriously when I tried to get assistance, i wasn't given the pain medication I could have, and pain management is the only treatment until you are ready to have a hysterectomy.
    For years I was told it would get easier after I had a baby but it actually got worse (I now know this is normal for my disease, as it is beleived to be trauma related).
    My current doctor wanted me to get my tubes tied because he wanted me to stop taking the pill and I burst into tears at the thought of having unregulated periods, I had been using the pill to skip most of them, and appart from getting out of cycle bleeding sometimes it made it more manageable.
    He sent me to see the surgeon, and for the first time in my life someone took me seriously, after talking to him I agreed to have the hysterectomy even though we didn't know what exactly was wrong, and I was warned I may never know.
    During the surgery they discovered the indometrosis and my uterus was twice its normal size.
    I am so grateful to Dr Rowland (my surgeon) for listening to me and taking care of me.
    It is genuinely life changing to no longer be in chronic pain, and to be able to go out without taking a change of clothes in case I leaked (a regular occurrence, despite the super tampons and extra large pads) or sleeping with towels on the bed because of how often I would wakeup covered in blood.
    If you are suffering unusually painful periods, it is not normal and it can get better with the right treatments!!!

  • @FortheBudgies

    Recovery time is entirely dependent upon the reason for the hysterectomy. I had Endometriosis, uterine polyp, and severe fibrosis. The fibrosis was a complete surprise because it didn't show up on imaging. So it's important to be prepared for recovering from a more extensive surgery than just a hysterectomy. But that's even more reason to have the surgery sooner than later. Don't put it off because of work or kids. Those are reasons TO get surgery. Fix the disease, don't let it progress. I was on hormonal suppression for decades because I was told it would prevent progression. At 48 my surgeon said I looked like I'd had 3 C-sections when I've never been pregnant. Don't delay surgery! Also, people without kids also have responsibilities, not just moms.

    Great Video !!! I am age 59 and started menstruating after 4 years of no mensus. An ultrasound revealed that my lining was 29 mm... I had an endometrial biopsy..
    and was diagnosed with Complex Hyperplasia with Atypia.
    It has been recommended that I have a hysterectomy, removal of cervix, removal of ovaries. I have PCOS, Hypothyroid, never had children. My Mom had endometrial cancer at age 70...she had the complete hysterectomy, ovaries removed, cervix removed...
    I have been advised that 4 out of 10 women with my background are found to have endometrial cancer once the uterus etc is removed...
    Here's the question...Isn't there a less invasive way to determine if I have endometrial cancer ?

      Risque-Business: Great physicians will always educate and offer a comprehensive overview of all treatment options. This will include: conservative medications and surgery as well as evidence based dietary and alternative therapies. A hysterectomy is a definitive option, and is typically not a first line treatment. However every circumstance is different and care will be individualized by your provider.

I had a unsuccessful vbac in July 2020 which resulted in uterine rupture.The obgyn who performed emergency c section said she was able to save utreus. But while I was in hospital i had a catheter for 3 days.I was experiencing blood in urine they did ct scan.It was normal except the uterus part which wasn't clear. Fast forward in bw i experienced bladder incontinence for 2 months which got resolved with plevic floor exercises. The main issue started when i got my 1st menstruation after c section. I was experiencing cyclic hematuria. I tried hormonal therapy it doesn't worked. After number of tests cystoscopy, hysteroscopy etc.( all my ct scans from very beginning was normal and even ct cystogram ).It tooked 8 months to diagnose the actual cause. Im diagnosed with utero vesico fistula some where bw lower segment of uterine and cervix. As the surgery date getting closer by I started feeling anxious and depressed. What would you advice.Dr Rich.Is just a fistula repair without hysterectomy is possible. My obgyn says with previous 2 csection scars and UR the chances of reoccurrence of fistula chances are higher.She was unable give a number such as 40 % or etc.

I did researched was able to read many cases studies regarding utero vesico and especially some of the cases studies ( Youssef's syndrome ).Their were success stories especially one who had same rupture as mine was able to get fistula repair ( she had ruptured uterus and bladder) without hysterectomy. Just because someone's pain is more debilitating doesn't mean they have a lower pain tolerance, it means they had more pain. Also, it is not a good idea to "push through the pain" after you have had abdominal surgery. If it hurts badly enough you really shouldn't do it because it will just slow your recovery. The most important factor is making sure that you feel comfortable with your doctor. That being said there is a universe of difference between a doctor who has 'trained' on a handful of surgeries in residency and a seasoned expert who has done thousands of procedures. Outcomes will be similar unless there is a complication of the anatomy. In this circumstance you want an expert. unfortunately you can't know how difficult the case will be until you start the surgery.

    Hello Dr, have been diagnosed with adenomyosis finally after 6 months of severe pain, nausea and never ending bloating. I have a enlarged uterus and I'm feeling a hysterectomy is probably my last resort to get out of this severe pain. I would like to keep my cervix, is this common? Risks? Thank you

    • @DoctorRich
      @DoctorRich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adenomyosis is rare overall, but common among women with severe pain and heavy bleeding. Generally the risks outweigh the benefits for keeping the cervix. Keeping your cervix means that you have a 12% chance of continued cyclic bleeding after hysterectomy, You will still needs pap testing, and have a risk of cervical cancer (1/125 risk). Although previously touted as a benefit, research has show no specific benefit of pelvic support or sexual satisfaction with cervix preservation. Also a slightly larger umbilical incision is required to remove the uterus if the cervix is retained.

    Don't count on 2 weeks! Plan for a month! Arrange for people to pick up your kids, take care of the house etc for at least a month. So much does not show up on imaging. If you have no other issues then 2 weeks lines up with my experience if I hadn't had complications. But I did, my surgery was 2x longer and I needed a stent to my kidney. Luckily I had prepared freezer meals and arranged for my friend to come and help with things around the house. The pain isn't as big of an issue as the fatigue. Total Hysterectomy in 2 days( Adenomyosis) I’m so scared

  • @newmoon7008

    So fibroids can still grow if you have a hysterectomy. Is it pointless if it can still grow after the uterus is removed?

    • @DoctorRich
      @DoctorRich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question. You can NOT grow fibroids once you have had a hysterectomy. In rare circumstance uterine tissue is 'left behind' during a hysterectomy resulting is leiomyomatosis (peritoneal fibroids). However this is less than on in three thousand cases. Most doctors would go an entire career and not see such a rare case.

    Do you have anyone you might be able to refer me to in Central Texas (Harker Heights or Temple?). I just found out I have a “sizable” fibroid tumor. Which explains issues with my periods much like your patient. I’m 37, done having children. And would really like this grapefruit sized unwanted passenger out of me lol.

    • @DoctorRich

      Precisely. Robotics is 'computer assisted' Laparoscopy. Minimally invasive hysterectomy "vaginal, laparoscopic, and robotic'- are all preferable to 'open surgery'. Robotics with make an extremely skilled surgeon - even more precise.

    Are there complications if you’ve had a previous c-section?

    • @DoctorRich
      @DoctorRich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any prior surgery (including C-section), can increase the risk of scar formation. This scaring might lead to a complication. Experienced surgeons are very skilled at carefully taking down these adhesions and avoiding complications. Always make certain you are comfortable with your surgeon's experience with the technology.

    I just had my hysterectomy 12 days ago can anyone talk about the estra salivation

    • @DoctorRich
      @DoctorRich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hypersalivation or Sailorrhea is a very uncommon condition. Certain medication and Jaw surgery can cause this. Although not specifically related to hysterectomy, it could be related to medication or fluid shifts. It is likely to resolve spontaneously.
