I recently came back to the faith after a long absence, and this is one of the few parts of Christian pop culture I remember ever seeing when I was a teenager in the 90s. This song is so good and it has stayed in my mind for almost 30 years until this day! Wow, it's still so good. The vocals almost remind me of Blink 182 meets Queen! Jesus saves.

@jasonvoorhees5640 because they went from being a rap group to a more mainstream pop sound. Toby Mac talked a lot about it a few years ago how he sort of felt out of place in the group when that happened, but he was glad to have done it because it stretched him as an artist. But that's essentially why people thought they sold out, starting with the Jesus Freak album.
Kevin Max does have an amazing gift from God, a God given voice. But the whole band are extremily talented in all there special way. Have been a blessing to me
I could make a contrived comment about not being religious & liking the band, but i'll just say this. I may not be a follower of the christian faith, but I've always loved dc talks music. It's pure at heart, the group works fantastically together with amazing vocals, harmonics, & great rap from Toby Mac. They stay true to their spiritual beliefs, & i have not yet listened to a song pumped out by them in the past that has degraded or attacked anyone for any reasoning (race, sexuality, other religious, etc). Honestly, probably the only christian band i listen to for purely the reasoning that they make both good music & have fantastic lyricist (unless they wrote the lyrics to a good chunk of their hits), & only describe their spirituality at heart & it's affects on themselves as individuals & those that they care for around them. Good band, good music!
I know it's been a year but I just gotta say I love this comment! I mean, I know Atheists and other non Christians who love bands like Skillet, RED, TFK, etc....but it's really cool that some like D.C Talk!
Um, have you listened to Toby Mac lately? Its funny when a band gets popular people call them sell outs even if they did it their own way. Toby is making songs that would be mainstream radio hits, but they aren't. Know why? Because the secular world cannot listen to the truth he speaks.
This music is for everyone, it's like 90 folk music. It has direct meaning to a former member of the band, but tells a story about someone YOU know so far gone. Not a great feeling
I remember when this song came out, one of our local stations was playing it right regular, and then they discovered it was Christian, and IMMEDIATELY PULLED IT!

Always agreed about the part at 2:18. The rest doesn't give me the Pink Floyd "Breathe" effect, but for some reason I always got a Beatles vibe from it. It's a combination that should only kinda work, but it works great!
This was a spectacular Afro-American/Caucasian mix of sorts, a trio of talented musical prodigies hell-bent on serving God through their chants, singing, and banging of drums. Their hip-hop Afro-American beats got the children dancing in the streets.

This song is about selling out. The man in the stretcher is a metaphor symbolizing one of the members in the group selling out. It is a spiritual death. It is a realization of the temptation to seek fortune and fame instead of living their lives for God. At the end of the video it shows each member Keith, Toby and Michael emerging from the stretcher as if to say that was a close call what was I thinking.
No clue if people will see this, and I imagine what I have to say will go against the target audience, but here goes anyway. This was my first exposure to DC Talk, which became my first exposure to Kevin Max, which became my first exposure to long hair being okay on guys and electronic music existing (Many of Kevin's solo works followed electronic music vibes, and in my extremely conservative background I was only allowed to watch his videos and listen to his music because he was a Christian singer). This song was always my favorite, and it became extremely important to help me cope with the loss of my high school friend, who was forced to move back to his home state. Knowing exactly where he was, but he was gone. It took on a completely different meaning years later (after high school) when I learned from a mutual friend he had taken his own life. He was with a person who months into their relationship came out as a trans man, and the former stayed with them, also coming out to his family as gay. His boyfriend confided in me after the fact that it was always known he identified as a man and contributed to them getting together. Both were rejected by their respective families and cast out. The turmoil destroyed their relationship, and he couldn't take it. The police report said they found his body in an alley and he had died from exposure. He never told us he was gay. In hindsight it was obvious, but I had no idea what love even was let alone it was possible to feel that way for the same sex. I wish I could've done more for him; it was the worst way to realize I was bisexual.

Summer of 1999, on a youth group trip to Astroworld, watching them perform this. Actually got asked on my very first date at this concert :) Great memories.
Bro... DC talk was my childhood I remember listening to them on my walkman I'm not a Christian anymore but I still listen to Jesus freak and coloured people from time to time
A haunting song dedicated to all of the famous people who were raised Christian but has "gone astray" or didn't even try to share the word at their platforms.
Guys I miss you. My spotify playlist is full of our songs. You helped me overcome my urge to listen to wordly rap songs God bless you Decent Christian Talk
This song brings back so many memories. I was in high school when this album came out and it was a good theme for our youth group for that summer. I was sad when the broke up.
As a non religious person, I always admired the way these guys let their beliefs influence their music rather than dictate it. They brought a positive message and stayed true to what they believed in without preachy or pandering. Ironically, these guys got me started on the road of figuring out my own musical tastes which now includes some pretty "sacrilegious" stuff like a loooooot of extremely heavy metal which I personally think is hilarious.
@@joepope5793 exactly. As well the guys from Black Sabbath are Christian. In the more extreme realm of metal Morbid Angel's drummer who left due to his beliefs but stayed with Terrorizer Pete Sandoval is a Christian. Ralph Santolla of Obituary, Deicide, i believe he was in Death he's a Catholic.
You have everything to gain from seeking the Lord. Please reach out to Him today. He loves you more than you can ever know and once you find Him, He will be actively involved in your life daily.
Despite being a Christian i never enjoyed modern Christian music, but it's bands like this that allow me to listen to music with a christian background.

How has it taken me until now to discover this good music lol I liked Kevin Max back in the day, and I think I was irritated that you don't hear him as much in DC Talk, so that's probably why.
Good to see that they're all still making music. Funny how Kevin ended up as the new lead of Audio Adrenaline and Mike ended up as the new lead for the Newsboys.Dc Talk, Audio Adrenaline and the Newsboys were my top 3 bands in the 90's.
Been a DC Talk fan for decades and this is the first time I've ever seen this video! They were truly inspiring and to see each of them doing so well and continuing to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world is pure joy. God bless you Kevin, Toby and Michael. And while I'm at it, what a unique amazing voice Kevin has.
I am a first generation Punk Rocker, atheist and non conformist if ever there was one but I cannot get enough of this song. So damn catchy and the video is really great.
This song is about where someone who was an firm believer in Christ has gone astray and ended up losing himself spiritually. Now he is spiritually dead.
Spring, 1998..sophomore yr high school....my Christian rock friend, whose Alternative rock brother i had a crush on, played this for me.... I thought it was kinda cool. It wasnt Oasis or our lady peace or Bush or NIN, but it was cool. Thats alp
Each one of the group, made a promise to never leave their faith in Christ. If fame was harmful to them, they would make a song about it to remember them to not be a quitter. This is the song.
In my book, there is DC Talk, then there is everyone else. Not that there should be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. But if there were, DC Talk is the clear winner. Toby Mac is awesome too. We have seen him so many times. He did a free concert in CT after Newtown. Not a dry eye there...I so wish they would get back together and tour...
Siiiigh they just don't make um like this anymore lol. I like to see CCM bands have fun in their music videos, Newsboys, Audio A. and DC Talk were always best for that :) Good to see other bands are picking that up like MercyMe.
See!? Popular Christian music doesn't have to be the refuge of the bland, boring, talentless hacks who couldn't make it in any other area of the music industry. DC Talk proved it. I'm not a Christian, but I'll always crank up the radio when I hear Toby, Michael, or (especially) Kevin.
Kevin the "Ringo Star" of the group? Wow my head just exploded! I love all the guys, but Kev is far and away the most creative and talented of em' IMO.
DC Talk will always be a go to band. Staple in my life's music since I was a kid. Now I share them with my kids. Classic 💯% Thankful for their inspiration to follow and imitate Jesus!
I remember this being such a big deal when I was 14. None of us had ever seen a Christian music video that had this kind of production value. I may not be religious anymore, but I still like this song and the video is great. Ah, late 90's memories...
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-2 We don't know what is inside anyone's heart except for God, so don't judge, just pray. There is nothing else to be said on the matter...
Laura Hammer 🤗🤗 I was finishing up high school in Ethiopia when I came across Newsboys and got hooked for life :)... and how the world has changed in these two decades.. and we still walk the walk with God’s amazing grace and joy! Where was this filmed?
Kevin Max is so underrated....Although I love Michael's voice, I have to admit that Kevin's voice is so incredibly distinctive...he simply does not sound like anyone else out there...period!

Have you gone astray [gone]
Don't think we don't miss you
[We think about you every day]
We still love you anyway
(Love don't go away)
There's still this burning question
(I got to know) Why?
(What will people think when they
Hear that I'm a Jesus freak?)
Ah, ah, ah (hey)
(While this is something of fantasy)
(The moral of the story is)
(To stick with your friends)
Ah, ah, ah, ah (hey)
Ah, ah, ah, (hey)
Ah, ah, ah (hey, hey, 1, 2, 3, 4)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, and you're gone [my friend]
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, so long
You've gone away, my friend
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, and you're gone [my friend]
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, so long
We'll see you someday
Wish you well
Na, na, na, na, na, my friend
Summer of 1999, on a youth group trip to Astroworld, watching them perform this. Actually got asked on my very first date at this concert :) Great memories.
When Kevin Max hits his notes - its undiscribable
Bro... DC talk was my childhood I remember listening to them on my walkman I'm not a Christian anymore but I still listen to Jesus freak and coloured people from time to time
I cannot get over how much I like this music video.
A haunting song dedicated to all of the famous people who were raised Christian but has "gone astray" or didn't even try to share the word at their platforms.
Ahhhhhh ok
Guys I miss you. My spotify playlist is full of our songs.
You helped me overcome my urge to listen to wordly rap songs
God bless you Decent Christian Talk
That is wonderful, Amen to that.
is that what it stands for?
@@newsgirlnotashamed2211 yes it is!
We still love you anyway... cuz love don't go away ❤ ✝️
I've gone astray, but I still jam DC Talk and Petra from my childhood from the 90s. Still uplifting.
Come back my friend
I watch this on vhs when I was a little kid and I love their music 🎸❤
This song brings back so many memories. I was in high school when this album came out and it was a good theme for our youth group for that summer. I was sad when the broke up.

Joshua Strickland They are doing a reunion.
first heard in 1998. now listening in 2021. still cool!!
You might be surprised to find out how many christian bands have developed a very gnarly heavy metal sound!
I'm a Christian i enjoy DC talk and i also enjoy Slayer
@@cavernofmusic3657 fair play. A lot of super metal guys are christian, Tom Araya among them.
I seriously love the creativity of this video, for a Christian band back then this was risky. It's almost like something sum 41 would do
These guys RULE!
(I'm an old-man ...43)
But who cares???
Excellent Video, Tune, and Message!!!
DC Talk with a kick line in a video? Excellent.
I'm an atheist, but this is one of my favorite songs lol
Don’t be mad at me for saying this, but I highly recommend watching a movie called Gods Not Dead. It raises some very good points
R
U
good
enough
4 Heaven?
hav u ever lied? hav u ever stolen? hav ever have sex outside of marriage?
u ever hate anyone? you ever use God's name in vain? if so, God sees you as a liar a thief an adulterer a fornicator a blasphemer and a hater at heart and you have to face God on Judgement Day! innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell?
Revelation 21 says all liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire!
.,..,.,..,.,..,.,Holy Bible says no Thief no adulterer in a fornicator no blasphemer and no hater by any means shall inherit the Kingdom of Heaven!you broke God's laws but Jesus Paid your fine! if you turn from sin and Trust in Christ God will forgive!
if you refuse to turn from sin and Trust in Christ then you must pay for your own sins against God yourself on the day of judgement!
god doesnt sit on clowd, god is about helping others and not be dick who doesnt help give money
Same here. HAHAHAHAHA' I like this song
Hilarious seeig you here but 9 years ago
The best DC Talk video ever.
How has it taken me until now to discover this good music lol I liked Kevin Max back in the day, and I think I was irritated that you don't hear him as much in DC Talk, so that's probably why.
1:35... Toby be like: I'll just go ahead and sing Kevin's lines from here on out. Erryone cool wit dat, yo?
That always caught me off guard as a kid lol
My first cd ever. THANK YOU JESUS CHRIST!!!
Good to see that they're all still making music. Funny how Kevin ended up as the new lead of Audio Adrenaline and Mike ended up as the new lead for the Newsboys.Dc Talk, Audio Adrenaline and the Newsboys were my top 3 bands in the 90's.
Lol... Me too...
We had this dvd when I was a kid My brothers and I would watch it constantly, hmmm wonder if Amazon carries it.
Awesome song! My first time hearing it.
Thats alp
one of my favorite DC Talk songs. I can't believe I was lucky enough to go on the Jesus Freak Cruise earlier this month!
I gotta know... was it awsome?! Spill it!!!
Ah ah ! Sooo Boys Band ^^"
And tobyMac with the voice of Kevin Max at 1:35 xD
Strange video here but i love that trio !
Sylas Roy Oh yeah haha didn't notice that till now.
the only ad I never skipped: the amputee. if you can understand and take apart your life, you can change it. best youtube ad I've seen.
Toby and Kevin are so gorgeous those eyes and hair
Each one of the group, made a promise to never leave their faith in Christ. If fame was harmful to them, they would make a song about it to remember them to not be a quitter. This is the song.
Kevin max tiene una de las mejores voces!
For such a happy upbeat song, so very sad.
Melhor entre as melhores !
Curtia tanto, que saudade dos anos que se foram !! 😬
🎧🎶🎧🎶🎧🎶😭
To be honest, I'm atheist now, but I still listen to Dc Talks songs like this one. They are so great musicians!
Good Lord, can God make a better looking man then Kevin Max? Too much, handsome on one human being!! 😍😍😍
This is one band that I believe will live on in my heart till I die!!!! I saw them in 1999 and it was awesome!!!!
Kevin Max is my favorite singer of all time
In my book, there is DC Talk, then there is everyone else. Not that there should be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. But if there were, DC Talk is the clear winner. Toby Mac is awesome too. We have seen him so many times. He did a free concert in CT after Newtown. Not a dry eye there...I so wish they would get back together and tour...
I am your number one fan. and my favorite song is my friend (so long)!
Me too!
Holy throwback... Centuries going back with these guys. This is my childhood
Siiiigh they just don't make um like this anymore lol. I like to see CCM bands have fun in their music videos, Newsboys, Audio A. and DC Talk were always best for that :) Good to see other bands are picking that up like MercyMe.
Yes! This reminds me of The Newsboys "Breakfast Song' and Mark Schultz "Running Just to Catch Myself..." and The Afters' "MySpace Girl" :)
Third day's Conspiracy no 5 album was crazy good
Such a creative concept for a song/video
Kevin the "Ringo Star" of the group? Wow my head just exploded! I love all the guys, but Kev is far and away the most creative and talented of em' IMO.
At 2:20 you can hear the Pink Floyd influence... Love DC Talk !!
DC Talk will always be a go to band. Staple in my life's music since I was a kid. Now I share them with my kids. Classic 💯% Thankful for their inspiration to follow and imitate Jesus!
DCTalk is almost back !!! cannot wait!!!
Vanessa Araya really?
kinda sorta, not really

Slow Bro What the Hey?!
dc talk was SO good. Best Christian band ever. I miss them
Kevin Max is the best vocalist out there.
@Justus Angel ]]pppop[
I met kevin max and the whole dv talk band. No joke.
@KevinFowler OMG I am a huge fan. What were they like?
He sounds like Freddie mercury a bit
I remember this being such a big deal when I was 14. None of us had ever seen a Christian music video that had this kind of production value. I may not be religious anymore, but I still like this song and the video is great. Ah, late 90's memories...
They make realllllly good music videos!
I see you everywhere on their youtube videos it seems. Do I dare guess that maybe you're a fan of theirs? ;)
*blushing* yeahhh I adored them as a kid and toook a trip down memory lane *covers face with hair*
PrettyTiaF You and me both!
Yay!
The "Dr. Davis, telephone please" sound clip used at the end of this video was also used in the Newsboys' movie "Down Under The Big Top"
Also plays at the beginning of eyes of stranger by queensryche.
My fav Christian group hands down.
I'm in this video at 1:07 and 1:10.
👍
Me too i was an extra so much fun!!
Laura Hammer 🤗🤗 I was finishing up high school in Ethiopia when I came across Newsboys and got hooked for life :)... and how the world has changed in these two decades.. and we still walk the walk with God’s amazing grace and joy! Where was this filmed?
@@girumzemichael704 it was filmed in Nashville TN.
I am a hindu living in India. I love DC talk.
