See I love this era of cars. It's like, halfway electronic, with radio, windows and all. But no stupid complicated infotainment, stupid cruise control and lane-keeping assist that you can't turn off.
    And a proper gearbox.
    Love it

my black 06 outback just got totaled in a not-at-fault accident. she just got towed away today after 17 years of service (almost hit 200k mi). brings tears to my eyes watching this. what an accurate description of why I've loved but also have been totally peeved by this car all these years. rugged and ready for anything is the perfect way to describe it, along with the ending tag. thank you

I know your pain. Four days ago, my first and only car, my Green and tan Subaru Legacy Outback 96 was rear ended and totaled in a not-at-fault accident. I Loved that car because not only was it awesome but it was my grandfathers and I had a lot of old and new memories associated with that car. He bought the car new from Subaru all those years ago. I took care of it as much as I could and it got me to many places. I had just recently done a lot of work cleaning it up and fixing some issues. Lots of mechanical work I did myself, put on a hood scoop, and a tint. Now, I'm forced to move on from it. Its like it took a piece of me with it. It had 295k miles. Now I'm looking to buy a white Subaru outback 2006 2.5i. Its hard to say goodbye but this is the start of something new.

What the hell. I watched this as I’m looking into getting an 08 outback. I have a 04 bmw 545i and wanted something a little bigger for me to daily as I have a 3 year old girl now. While we get her mother the larger family vehicle I wanted something in the middle to haul my daughter and her things. Watching this made me picture taking her camping. Hiking. Road trips. Back road drives in the country since we live in texas. You worded it so eloquently. And have gained my subscription. Good work man. Keep fighting the good fight. 😂🎉

Traded in my 2008 Impreza Outback Sport a year and a half ago. The car has 180,000 miles but was still zippy and reliable. Basically the perfect city car. I upgraded to an Audi Allroad, which I love, but my financial situation has worsened in the last year, so I'm considering going back to this gen of Subarus. They really are the best bang for your buck.

I like Subaru. They are very discrete but comfortable, and I like that they still have personality in a sea of bland crossovers. Nearly every car is the same, but at least the Outback has a personality about it. I have a 2012 2.5i Limited and it's been great. It's very comfortable to live with and the insurance cost is very low. The resale value is amazing as well. They are not very fashionable, or fast, but they are practical, easy to live with, and my car has some nice added features like a sunroof, a good Harmon/Kardon sound system, dual-zone climate control, bluetooth, navigation, backup camera, heated seats, and my favorite feature of all, the windows go all the way down. Sure it's no BMW or Mercedes with rims, but I like it because it's not so much of a show-off in-your-face type of car. It just gets on with whatever task you have for it and it does it well.

Love my little suburu outback. It's gone up steep sand dunes, helped my mates move houses multiple times, I sleep in the back on camp trips, it's the car that takes everyone's stuff on camp trips, towed trailers, gone down rocky roads and survived long trips. Best car I've bought.

As a "librarian" with a 2.0 16 valve,165bhp Legacy wagon here in the uk, I can say that there is a big difference between the Legacy and the Outback, apart from ride height. The chassis and body of the Outback are specifically strengthened to go offroad. Subaru say that the Legacy is not. I have had Subaru legacies for nearly 30 years now and they are great cars. My current Legacy is 16 years old and just run in with 115,000 miles on the clock. I have had it from new and it has been almost faultless.

I have a 2009 outback with 54k miles. plan on keeping it bone stock and in good shape for the next 40 years or so since its the only modern car I feel I can handle. All the other modern cars are annoying and get in the way of driving in general. The outback is a new car with new cars amenities but with the spirit of a car from the 80s. The next best thing is my grandpa owned it so its already a family treasure.

Currently have 209K miles on our '06 Outback... very easy to DIY and is an absolute beast. Last year when I was replacing brake fluid (around 200K miles) and pumping the pedal to cycle the fluid through the lines - brake fluid leaked all over the driveway.. Had a rupture due to corrosion on a 4-way line connector near the rear passenger side of the undercarriage. Towed to the dealer and Subaru replaced ... EVERYTHING... free of charge. Hope I can get another 200K out of my new brake lines ! Sure I leak a little oil here and there... but replace with conventional every 3-4K miles and no problem.

I found an 2006 subaru with 164k mile selling for 4k. Apparently really well maintained. Could it be a good buy? I don't care about cars, I just want them to take me place without breaking every time.

The 5-speed auto (5EAT) was only on the 2.5XT (Turbo) and the 3.0R (Flat-6). 2.5i only got a 4-spd auto or 5-speed manual. XT also got the 5-speed manual. 3.0R only got the 5EAT.

Is a 2006 subaru outback with 180k a smart move for a used car at present?

As long as it’s been well maintained. At that mileage, I would expect to have replaced the head gaskets with the new triple layer gasket (not the same original gasket) so they won’t leak anymore.

Wouldn't the Forester be a more capable "off-road designed" vehicle than the Outback ? By the way, I like more the general design of the Outback than the Forester....

As for "Outback was a package, you could get it on the WRX" - that's because WRX was a package, too! For a while, Subaru made only two "models" of car (for the US) - the Impreza and the Legacy. Every other "vehicle" was just a package/trimline of the Impreza or the Legacy. Even the early model Forester was just an Impreza with a more extreme "Outback" package.
I just thought it especially odd when they marketed both the "Outback" and the "Outback Sport" - you'd think the "Sport" was just a higher trimline, or a sportier trimline of the "Outback". But no. The plain-Outback was a Legacy with the Outback package, the Outback Sport was an Impreza with the Outback package!
Heck, when they discontinued the "Outback Sport," they replaced it with the "XV Crosstrek" which is itself just a "more offroady" newer model Impreza.
