I shoot everything on a GH4 still too! It's a great camera. I wish taking stills was as fast as a DSLR, but the quality is still even better than my Canon 6D.
This is so awesome. Appreciate the honesty and true thoughts. Better than any review. Gh4 was my first video camera and it changed my life, and been lumix since.
I am trying to create a budget video podcast setup. Everything will be installed and using studio lighting. Would you think that the GH4 is the best option at its price point in 2023?
Honestly there isnt a lot more modern cameras would do better. If the lighting is good and the focus is set in advance then yes these have unlimited 1080p and 4k video recording and can be powered by a dummy battery and if not that have incredible battery life. Of course they are only 8 bit but I doubt you would need 10 bit for a podcast anyway. I say yes for sure! Something like the GH5s definitely has some benefits but is significantly more expensive.
Funny you speak about nostalgia because I still use the GH4 despite I have the GH5, GH6 and S5II, I thought it was because nostalgia but it's not, I just like the rendering of this camera, it's not perfect at all but I still like it.
i have gh4 from when it first released. I currently use fx3 and fx6 for most of my professional work (I rent). But there are some jobs that the budget is not that big, and I'm back on gh4, and this camera is really outdated in term of quality. do you think I should sell the gh4 and get a used gh5, or buy atomos ninja v, for 4k 10 bit output in my gh4? i have vlog l on my gh4. Thank You.
I started with Gh2 and when later on my GH4 gets old, I bought an Atomos Ninja V for my GH4 and used it in 10 bits. That was the reason I never used the GH5. Instead, I switched to GH5s just for low-light performance. Now I do own a GH6 and again as an A-cam. The GH5s is still my B-cam. The GH4 and the DVX 200 are for special cases only. What I'm really missing, is such a tiny thing like my GH2 in 4K, just for gimbal work. The GH2 with a 14mm 2.5 has a weight of about 450 grams. 🤣 So in 1080p, I can shoot on a Crane 1 a whole day long 💪🤘
Looking to replace my G7 because the mini HDMI port went all sad. Either GH4 or G9 likely. C cam. Would be really nice to go with full sized HDMI. Still have the ZV-1 as overhead and ZV-E10 as main cam. Once Panasonic goes PDAF in M43, Sony's gone. It's good, it's easy, just not anywhere near as good as the M43 gear for so many reasons
@@RhettThompsonFilm There are currently 3 good quality cameras in operation and the G7 can still record to a memory card so it's not like I'm hurting or anything, just there's always the want for more :P My M43 lenses want to get used!

The gh4 will continue to be part of my team. If you want to cover an event with light hd only, there's no other camera for the job. It is small, powerful, cheap. I would say that to do interviews and record a conversation there is nothing that beats it in price quality.
I don't think a pro should still be using a GH4. I have it; I can't really justify, based on my use, an upgrade right now. But a pro needs, at the very least, dual memory card slots. Using the GH4 as a backup or second camera for an assistant is obviously a great choice. I used to shoot wedding stills back in the film days and you could keep legacy equipment forever. I had a '70s or '80s era Hasselblad into the 2000s and it got terrific results. Heck, until the last few years, I could still have made a living with mid-2000s Canon DSLR equipment if I had to (again, stills). But I've been out of that game for a while. Video is just an entirely different thing. I keep thinking I'm going to dump my GH4 and go to Sony or get out of it altogether and just shoot with my GoPro, but then something comes up that I need it for. As you said, at the price it commands, it isn't worth selling.
I am a professional, but typically don’t have the resources. We need to upgrade to the newest camera equipment. In a situation, where I occasionally need three, four, or five cameras it’s certainly more than capable of being a camera, capturing a wide shot or something along those lines
Unfortunately, a single card slot is one of the downsides of the GH4 but yeah, I would assume the image quality would be similar to the GX8 may be slightly better. I would’ve tempted to get a GH5 though it’s a lot better in a lot of ways.
Awesome video! The GH4 has a special place in my heart! I keep wanting to grab one but I just can't justify it but maybe someday...I'll find just right reason to get one.
Honestly, something about the image is really compelling to me. I don’t know if it’s the OLPF or just the way the noise performs but me images of really solid still. The lack of 10 but hurts but what are you gonna do?
@@RhettThompsonFilm Im asking if it was AFS, or ASC, what AF mode, what metering, what lens, face tracking, this kind of settings, not about editing :)
Yeah, I vibe with this. It's not quite as capable as any of the GH cams but I have probably broken up with and taken back the ZV-E10 like four times. Familiarity is what it is. I know where all the buttons and settings and quirks are hiding.
Hi Rhett. My first step into 4K was a GH4 from a Sony EX1R. Loved the picture and the weight difference. Not sure I would go back to a GH4. I love my GH6 and 2 GH5S's.
That’s tough. GH5ii is a decent upgrade but the GH6 is even better with a few exceptions. No 6k photo, no pre burst, no live cropping and no live view comp and also no fancy live streaming but other than that the 4k60-4k120 is fantastic. Depends on what you value
@@RhettThompsonFilm i love panasonic. If i have enough money i will own a gh6 and a s5x . To me for video gh6 is the best option as it can do everything you will ever neeed. S5 is great for video too also but i dont want to give up the 4.3 and no crop in 4k60 , s5 will be for fotos and videos i dont need higher framerates
I still use a gh2
Great camera. What hack did you use?
i loved that gh2 camera hack. it was a beast

It’s not bad but not quite as snappy, still the results are great! My brothers images from Japan are amazing

It's a GH4 festival! Man, I've done the same thing before with the GH5S. Awesome stuff :)
It’s my version of the G7! Haha although I’d love to play with one of those someday

Quite the history! If you don’t count tapes I started with the GH4 myself.
My tiny cam these days is the g100 but doesn’t see a ton of pro use
How can I transfer video pictures to my phone from the gh4?

I love the GH4 for more angles. I have 4 of them. Along with a G9 and GH6. For some shoots I just want to have 4 to five angles. They work great!
For getting into events and weddings a GH5 and a GH4 or two might be the best and cheapest combo out there!
how are you color matching the GH4 and GH6
gh4 can u dual card video on it ?
and would the lowlight be the same with this to Panasonic gx8 ?

hi, which lens are you using for this video? thanks!
This would be the XYOptics Mitakon Speedmaster Cine lens (although the photography version is basically the same) 17mm T1.0
