    I just took my GH4 on a hike through the Texas Hill Country instead of my G9. It’s lighter, the battery life is longer, if I drop it I don’t lose as much money, and it still takes great pictures and videos. I just scrubbed through them and they look great! It will stay with me for years to come.

    You’re totally on point with all of these reasons. I have 2 GH5s and and a GH4, and I still use the GH4 quite a bit, especially for shooting live events. The battery life is superb and you are so right about the screen! I thought I was crazy for thinking that the lower resolution screen on the GH4 actually looked sharper than the one on GH5. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one!

    Great video! I recently noticed the long battery life indeed and it made me super happy. My reason #8 is the anti alias filter in the GH4. It makes it my favorite for reproducing images from books or old magazines and newspapers. It also comes in handy when a TV set or a computer screen is in the image.

    I have both GH4 and GH5 and I agree with all your arguments. Love my little GH4. For me the biggest strenghts of GH5 are IBIS (which is very useful for my handheld workflow), 4k 60fps and size. GH4 is too light and small for me. I was really sad that they removed 50mbs option from GH5, now files are huge and my laptop must work way harder with those files. I have GH5 2 years already and I still can't trust focus peaking. Great battery life, simplicity and amazing focus peaking makes GH4 way better camera than GH5 for me. Also my GH4 has some retro vibes in video quality, I can't explain what exactly it is, but in general video from GH4 is more pleasant to the eye.

    Funny about the LCD screen! I used the GH4 for almost five years, and recently switched to the G9. The thing that got me was how the G9's screen was less clear, and thereby harder to manually focus than the GH4! For this reason, I'm thankful that G9 autofocus is much more useable. I stick with the G9 because of 4k 50p, IBIS, 150p and improved colour. But the GH4 is still surprisingly good by comparison.

      @@RhettThompsonFilm I managed to hold a GH3 or GH4 body the other day at a Hobby store for a few seconds and boy did it feel comfortable (immediately) compared to a G85. They would not allow the customers to handle the G9 so I could not compare the grip to that model. I feel that if the camera feels good in the hand one actually want to shoot more with it. I think if the grip on the GH5 has been improved over the GH4 then people with large hands may prefer the larger body/grip over the GH4 although the weight might be an issue after a whole day of shooting. When I moved up from the FZ200 to the FZ300 I did not like the new grip and the increased weight.

    Rhett, I own two GH4 cameras and have been thinking about getting a GH5 or GH5s. How well do you think the picture profiles match the GH4? Like if you are shooting the same subject with both cameras with the same picture profile settings, does it match perfectly? Like an interview with adequate lighting.

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I my experience the GH4s match the GH5 pretty darn well. The GH5s might be a little different from what Ive heard and Ive shot with them both together but I didnt edit the footage so its hard to say. Obviously two GH4 cameras or two GH5 cameras would be ideal but the GH4 and the GH5 match really well. I even use the LX100 as a C cam sometimes and that looks good too.

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even lenses can effect this as well but the profiles themselves are about as close as it gets.

    • @claniusg

      @@RhettThompsonFilm Thanks for the opinion. The gh5 and gh5s feature sets would really be great for me to have, but I've been shooting interviews and multicam stuff with two identical set ups (GH4 and 12-35 f2.8 or the 35-100mm f2.8 if I've got to be across the room. Those two lens even have some subtle differences). I'm kinda thinking about one GH5 or 5s and just continuing to use the GH4 for multicam work with the GH5 as a third angle if I need it. I could pick up the 42.5 mm voigtlander to go with my 17.5mm for interviews and I think that might make a bigger difference than a 2nd GH5 for a little less money. I've always been amazed at the GH4 battery life too and would probably like to continue using it for interviews for that reason. A GH4 with two name brand batteries in the camera with grip is great because you can quit even thinking about battery life if you go in charged and are trying to run productions with no crew or 1-2 other people. I didn't realize the GH5 was so much worse until seeing your video.

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@claniusg I know this is late but the GH5 is still GOOD for battery but I would describe the GH4 battery as EPIC. Ive really been enjoying the Battery Grip from Neewer on the GH5 to get two batteries in it, or using a plus in battery source. The Lumic 12-35 and 35-100 are a great combo as are the Voigtlander 17.5 and 42.5mm lenses. Its so tough with all the options it can be as much of a curse as a gift! Im always on the lookout for matching cameras and lens sets as well becuase I hate endlessly trying to correct shots with different characteristics in post.

    Hi! What special feature is going on in your videos taken with GH5 and Leica 10-25 to make AF work so horrendous? I saw many reviews and tests of this lens and while not perfect AF was always decent. But in your footage and in Gerald's Undone comparison to Sigma 18-35 AF in video is appaling. Do you do something differently or all these tests where somehow biased? I really need lens with these parameters and although I plan to use MF 90% of time, still this is unsettling. Is it about using V-logL...?

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using the log definitely didn’t help and I think it was my focus settings on this video. The part where it goes completely out of focus I was using single point and I simply wasn’t inside the box so it just focused on the background. I would check out some of my other videos for better auto focus examples where it actually works pretty well. I plan on making an entire autofocus video at some point but it’s a lot of stuff to go over and you really have to know when and how to use Autofocus on the GH5.

    The GH4 actually also still gets good use in automotive settings, because the vibrations from being rigged in lets say a car that's being driven hard would throw IBIS totally off and create IBIS wobble. I've always been shooting Canon for photos, but I got the GH4 many years ago for multirotor/drone shots and because it could do 4k video, when none of the Canon DSLRs could. That, and sometimes you really don't want to lug a big Canon 5D Mk3 around. Upgraded to the GH5 eventually, then the GH5 Mk2. Still have my GH4 though. I think you MAYBE want to go with a Sony due to the larger sensor. I’ll make it slightly easier to get out of focus backgrounds which is a popular look. You really can’t go wrong either way though and can get great results with both. I think look at the lenses first and see which system has what you’d be looking for.

    Great video! I own the GH4 and feel no need to upgrade to the GH5 except for 10-bit 4:2:2 that is available on the GH5, and I do not believe it is possible with the GH4 unless you record to a remote device. I may be wrong but that is my understanding. There is a massive difference between 8 bit and 10 bit.

    The GH4 has SDI where the GH5 and GH5s only has HDMI limiting them to prosumers and out of the professional realm. Better image stabilisation (it's not great on the GH5. I'd say it's better to stick with lens OIS only or just nothing). Higher bitrate from the sensor (the GH5s is better, but not the GH5). V-lock high-capacity battery support.

      @@geekazoid the YAGH can't be used with the GH5 and as far I know was never meant to be, but maybe. The GH5 alternatives are HDMI to sdi converters, not powered by the camera and certainly not part of the design. As for price, I bought the YAGH from Panasonic about a year after launch for $400. If the price has gone up since then, that's bizarre, but likely because of short supply these days. It happens. The bundle on launch, with the camera, was $2.6k. We still have our receipts for all of this.
