Jokes aside, I think we need to appreciate exactly how much work went into this video. We have just watched a meticulously researched video, for which Michael read multiple book & articles, found examples to describe every philosophical viewpoint, and presented it in an interesting and engaging way. You just watched a 37 minute video about the existence of chairs, and weren't bored at all. Praise this man.
That's VSauce for ya. I know this guy is prime meme material but his videos are legit amazing and I think that's why so many people are attracted to them. On a similar topic, I've always wondered how the transporters on Star Trek can differentiate between matter that belongs to a person's body, their clothes, the air around them, the ground beneath them, or a chair they are sitting in.
I always felt so unsatisfied that there was no explanation to this, yeah.. i theorized about identifying human cells, putting them together for a model of the human, and then scan for matter in a 3cm radius that is not air (to get the clothes).

This reminds me of a similar story my old Philosophy professor told our class. Basically, the final exam for the class was an essay question. It just read "Why?" All the students pulled out text books, began scribbling like crazy. One student stared around, finally wrote down something quickly and turned it in. The only A on that day was that same student who turned in a paper that said "Why not?"

Jokes aside, I think we need to appreciate exactly how much work went into this video. We have just watched a meticulously researched video, for which Michael read multiple book & articles, found examples to describe every philosophical viewpoint, and presented it in an interesting and engaging way. You just watched a 37 minute video about the existence of chairs, and weren't bored at all. Praise this man.
That's VSauce for ya. I know this guy is prime meme material but his videos are legit amazing and I think that's why so many people are attracted to them. He has a really great Ted talk about this, how he invites people with a big, seemingly unanswerable question, just to "accidentally trick them into learning something along the way" (in this case an introductory course in ontology). He's hands down one of the best things the internet ever created

Under his reasoning, it would also be valid to say that death is when his body stops "Michael-ing" and scattering is a process done to a body that was "Michael-ing"

On a similar topic, I've always wondered how the transporters on Star Trek can differentiate between matter that belongs to a person's body, their clothes, the air around them, the ground beneath them, or a chair they are sitting in.
I always felt so unsatisfied that there was no explanation to this, yeah.. i theorized about identifying human cells, putting them together for a model of the human, and then scan for matter in a 3cm radius that is not air (to get the clothes).
I have to kinda assume that as they developed them, at first they could only do continuous (or nearly so) atomic blocks. So like chunks of pure or nearly pure iron. And then developed and refined that into the "well you can do it, just don't do anything live through it because it might not quite be right" of Enterprise, and over the next two centuries got to the reliable, fully able to differentiate level of TOS
Pattern based isn't it, presumably part of the transport process is some kind of CT scan to establish body Vs surroundings, but how do we know they're not transporting the air around them too?

They can't. That's why we don't have teleporters and replicators, and why they seem even less possible now even though we have advanced much further with our scientific understanding.
