    Like probably most people here I know this feeling. It doesn't matter how many times you go through depression it usually feels like the dark haze will never lift.

    I’m not a big fan of the word “normal”, so thank you for rephrasing it into “unique precious self”. I do believe that we are able to transition to a better improved version of ourselves, and to reconnect with our true, higher self. Thank you, your voice is very soothing.

    Thank you so so much!!! I have to agree with this answer. I have been dealing with depression, anxiety due to PTSD. During my worst days I had extreme brain fog, lots of twitching in random parts of my body, random heart palpitations, weird headaches, crying over anything, I felt like I wasn’t within myself, constant negative/suicidal thoughts, constant fear. I had never been like that prior to my traumatic experience. By the grace of God, I feel He delivered me from something so evil after I fasted, prayed, and spent time in His word. The negative thoughts and the physical symptoms attached with it began to slowly go away. I still feel symptoms here and there, but I feel closer to myself than I did before so I know healing is possible.. little by little... don’t lose hope!

    Hi Douglas, I really hope you will read this. At the end of 2017 I became clinical depressed. I've dealt with depression before but this time it was next level hell. Somewhere in 2018 I came across your videos and I watched most of them. What you said often did not resonate with me. Not because I disagreed but I was just too depressed to really listen. The only thing that was soothing was your voice and the intro music of your videos :) I had suidical ideation and I was convinced I would die from depression. Medication and professional help did not work.
    But totally unexpected - at least on a conscious level - things changed. The inner pain became too great and I knew I had to change or else I would die. At the same time I had the opportunity to move to a better and nicer apartment. Despite the depression I decided to move. Once I was settled in my new apartement I stopped using drugs, alcohol, nicotine, prescribed sleeping medication and unhealthy food (candy, processed food, etc). Instead, I went to the gym every day, started a healthy diet, meditated daily and made sure I got a good night's sleep every night. This changed my life radically! Not in one day of but in the course of a few months. Nowadays I'm no longer depressed and I feel happy with my life. I have much more energy, strength and a high libido. The point of my story is: if you're going through hell don't stop! What you feel is temporary. Things will change.
    Douglas, your videos played a role in my recovery and I want to thank you for that. Dank u wel!

      @@drEAmzZzzaiv refrained from doing so for 3 years now . But when I am totally honest with myself instead of deluding myself I do acknowledge my life is not changing . And I do need something to alter the way my brain works .
      I have major symptoms of adhd and ptsd , also traits of bipolar .
      As much as on the surface (some days ) I look ‘ fine ‘ . I’m totally not .
      I’m not sure how much longer I can carry my suit if of armour .. it’s becoming heavy.
      Love yourself first x
      I didn’t and forgot my worth . Hence this .

    i realized that chasing that "normal state" has increased my anxiety. everyday i feel so frustrated with myself because i'm just so sensitive and anxious. i realized that i was being too desperate to be "normal" again, that i forgot to take care of my present self.

    This video is very timely for me. Since the start of August, I’ve been going through a terrible bout of depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Almost every night, I struggle to fall asleep, often waking up disoriented and groggy the flowing day. If I’m lucky, I might experience one or two days of relative normalcy, followed by several days of intense anxiety and sleep deprivation. So far, this cycle never seems to end. For the most part, I’ve lost all motivation and ambition. I’m afraid that I’ll never be able to sleep normally again, that the anxiety will never end, and that I’ll start to lose my grip on reality. Usually, my bouts of anxiety are triggered by specific things, such as loneliness and lack of financial security. Those things are still issues for me, but in this case, my anxiety seems to be caused by the fear of anxiousness itself.

      Youre not alone! In the same boat. Its so hard to maintain the "This too shall pass" mantra when this can go on for soooooo long. On month 11. If I'm lucky I get 2 decent days a week.

      Joseph Logsdon Hey Joseph, I, like you have suffered many times from insomnia my friend. I know it’s awful going through it but the thing that helps me come out eventually is acceptance and saying to myself that it will be ok. I know that sounds a bit corny but it seems to work better than any drug I know. The mind is very strong and can be very stubborn. Just make peace with it. I just admit and say things like..”well, I may not sleep tonight (When I’m going through it) but I will be ok nonetheless or something similar. I believe I have tried all the so-called techniques to help me sleep but none really work. The one technique that worked once was keeping my eyes open and slowly closing them. I don’t know about you but I think it’s really when your body is ready to sleep you sleep. I believe we have a particular sleep gene. That’s only my opinion. Some years ago I didn’t sleep at all for 9 days. On the 10th day I got around 2.5, the 11th I got approximately 4.5. After that I was regular again and getting between 5-7 hours. These days I have bouts of 3-4 days without sleep but usually when I’m worried about something like starting a new job or I might have a few too many drinks one night and stay up late thus putting my routine out of kilter. Do you fall into the trap about worrying about not sleeping? This needs to be nipped in the bud as soon as possible my friend. I’d like to hear how you are going. God bless

      Grant Knott At this point, the thought of going to bed makes me want to puke! When I’m tossing and turning, it feels like I’m trapped in some kind of Hell. My sleeping patterns are constantly changing, but as of now, I’ll usually experience several nights of poor sleep, often getting between three and five hours, or even none at all. After several days of pure exhaustion, I’ll then sleep nine or ten hours. The following day, I’ll usually feel great, but when I finally try to go to bed, I often won’t feel tired enough for sleep. I’ve been stuck in this cycle for over a month. I’ve experienced bouts of insomnia before, but they were usually related to travel or getting up really early. Recently, I’ve been trying to complete revisions on a book that I’ve been working on, which has caused me to worry about not being alert enough to properly complete the revisions. I have other worries, but that has definitely contributed to my insomnia.

      Thanks for sharing. What are you doing at the moment in terms of mental health treatment? Do you have a counselor or a psychiatrist? I have a number of videos on Sleep that you might want to watch that gives tips about how to overcome insomnia. Also, if your poor sleep continues, you might want to get evaluated at a sleep clinic. I do believe that your sleep can return to normal.

      Douglas Bloch Unfortunately, I do not. I have a terrible health insurance plan. My parents might be able to pay for therapy, but I’m afraid of asking them. Even If I could pay for counseling, good therapy is hard to come by, especially when you live in a rural area.

I was at a very low point where I didn't know if I'd be able to feel my normal self ever again, but with the help of a fantastic counsellor over a period of time, I've reached a place of stability. I know that everyone's experience is different, but I'm another example that recovery is possible.

    As someone who went through a bout of pretty extreme depression for roughly 25 years, you can feel normal again, but meds arent the way most of the time. What does work, is taking true control of your life as well as becoming a truly "integrated" person, look it up, it works....

      wow, 25 years. thank you for sharing that. I tried two different antidepressants a couple years ago for only one month each, but gave up on both. I felt in my mind that a more holistic approach was the way to go, and that's why i stopped. Also, they werent working lol. But im 24, and ive been dealing with it for maybe since i graduated high school 6 years ago. Im still nowhere close to healed, but i have so much work to do, and havent yet put the action into the words that i claim. So thanks for your comment, ill continue to try and do better.

      i recently started a CBT program. i also believe medication is not the way to go. also as stated if sertonin is most active in the gut. and medication only "encourages" the BRAIN to make it i don't see how it can be very effective. diet plays a role

    Thank you, Douglas, I really needed to hear this today since suffering from bipolar mania/anxiety and overmedication with my thyroid medication for hypothyroidism which put me into a temporary state of hyperthyroid which is exacerbating the bipolar mania/anxiety/panic attacks and my psychiatrist is trying to figure out which mood stabilizer to prescribe me for the bipolar now that my thyroid finally came back into the normal range. I think I am turning the corner now and things will be getting better but I was feeling really discouraged and hopeless, so hearing your talk on this subject today gives me hope again. Also, I am currently a wildfire evacuee in Oregon trying to deal with this crisis and smoke-filled air and devastation along with my fellow Oregonians which has only added to the feelings of hopelessness. Hanging on and trying to stay strong. This too shall pass. Much love and light and gratitude to you.

    It will take a miracle for me to feel the way I felt before my very first episode of depression. My therapist told me to give up on a cure & acceptance of depression.

      Sounds like time for a new therapist for you. Miracles do happen. I believe that I will come out of this, my fourth time to be afflicted with depression, anxiety and phobias. I have learned things I never would have because of my situation. It is critical to maintain hope. Sending you a big hug from Florida.

      I believe that we do need to accept that we have depression as a disorder, just as someone else might have asthma. But that does not mean that we can't experience joy again. We certainly can.

    Hey thanks a lot for your videos Douglas. Im 26 and ive been dulled in depression for more years than i know, and have only in the past year understood whats been going on with me. I use to wonder “is there something physically wrong with my brain?” Because i felt so off, so different, and struggled so much with basic things like understanding a conversation. Now that im understand whats happened to me, ive recently begun asking exactly this question, “will i ever get better? Will i ever be the version of myself i was happy with?”. This video is a breath of fresh air, and makes so much sense that my brain is likely very mushy in all the areas i once loved, and that with time and effort i can bring those parts of me back to life.     I suffered 10 years in severe depression from 1995 to 2005. I returned to more than normalcy when I redefined my life with the attitude that:
    (1) Life is a journey in self-discovery and development of potential.
    (2) Whatever happens in my life - the good, the bad and the ugly - is my unique field of training for the development of my potential and character.
    I have since written an ebook Surviving Depression.

    Hey Doug insightful as always, I was thinking when I was watching the video about normal. I was thinking that if the question was posed to me I would say no, the normal perception before you have depression or anxiety exists in a world before you have really hit rock bottom. People who have never gone through it really have no idea what it's like, before you go through it yourself you have absolutely no idea. The mind has a way of forgetting some of the more painful aspects when it is working correctly but you always remember the feeling of a low mood. In a way its a good thing because if you can recognize the fact that you are having problems you can take immediate action and reevaluate your self care and make adjustments.

    It’s hard to remember what a different state of mind is like.
    When you have the flu it’s hard to remember what it feels like to not be sick.
    When you’re sober, as a previous addict, it’s hard to fully remember what being high felt like.
    When you’re in an insomnia or depressive episode it’s hard to remember what it feels like to get a decent night’s sleep and be in a decent mood.
    But it is possible to get back to better states of mind or feeling.
    I think mindfulness and being the observing self helps to deal with negative emotions and thoughts.
    Also, good habits help. A vegetarian diet helps me be more resilient to stress, depression, insomnia

      Luckily the inverse is also true: when you’re better you will forget the pain and what it felt like. But don’t assume it will never get back. Keep working on it.

      Actually, there's a 10 hour difference between Portland Oregon Sofia Bulgaria. That means it would be 10 PM when I start my live chat. That is not late for me as I stay up till midnight, but for some people who go to bed at 9 PM, that would be late.

    I agree with you about the bike riding, but you say you have to do it only "at least once or twice a week". I ride every day for 2 hours, no exceptions. It's the highlight of my day and I ride at the same time every day (2:00 PM) so I never have to think about when to ride or whether to ride or not because of the weather or how I'm feeling. I'm sure I would be diagnosed with some term by the experts if I have to do something every day at the same time every day (OCD?) just like Dustin Hoffman in Rainman who had to watch Judge Wapner on The Peoples Court every day at the same time. I think Wapner aired at 3:00 PM every day in the movie so the analogy with Rainman doesn't apply to me.

    Lots of good messages in this video, however, going through severe depression and anxiety results in "memories and negative consequences" from those thoughts and behaviors during the illness...so I don't feel I can ever be the same again but I can get closer to my old self (and have done so thus far).

    But Mr. Bloch aerobic exercise gives me massive panic attacks, even ones that last for up to the whole rest of the day... or at least several hours on end. What should I do? Why is my body giving myself panic attacks for something that should be healing me? I even know there's nothing wrong with me, I don't think I'm having a heart attack... thinking perfectly rational... yet I panic. What do I do?

    I'm so glad I came across this. I'm 19. I've had depressive thoughts since I was little, but nothing like how I feel now. Completely hopeless. Dont want to live if I have to feel this way. Not only do I feel this way it's like my brain is slowing. For some reason I feel like I cant remember anything about my life and have no sense of self. If I was to go back to being my unique self would these come back?

      I had my first depressive episode when I was 18 in my first year of college. I could hardly function. I sought out counseling and joined a group at the college mental health center. Eventually I started to feel better and all of my faculties returned. You are so young. Young people are resilient. Reach out for support and you can get through this. I suggest that you start by seeing a therapist or a counselor or perhaps a psychiatrist.

    Take a walk and really connect with nature.
    Sing a song (any song) with gusto.
    Donate money, items or your time to a charity.
    Practice penmanship - beautifully write out the alphabet.
    Watch a stand-up comic on TH-cam.
    Play with your dog or cat.

    totally give up getting better my sister told me even as a kid / baby i was depressed. been through major trauma / ptsd involving my own childs death its nearly impossible to even know normal

      You don't have to let other people define who you are. You're obviously suffering but the brain and the body can heal. The key is getting the right kind of support. Have you reached out to any mental health professionals or people in your personal life

    I gotta say, you are one of the few mental health people on youtube that promote a sort of unconditional hope. I'm not sure yet wether this or the other "grind" approach will get me trough the ditch, but after struggling with anxiety for years (and doing talk therapy where it's also constantly forcing myself) it certainly feels nice to hear someone say that the pain isn't forever and it's gonna be okay. However, I still ask myself if it is indeed forever when you can't bring up the energy to get out of the house and do things different than yesterday. So should it say "your pain is not forever... but you have to do xyz? And what if I can't?

      Thank you for your insight. Having had a number of severe depressive episodes I can attest to how difficult recovery is. Who are you seeing for your anxiety. Have you tried medication? I have a video that explains the different anxiety circuits in the brainand how to respond to each one. The video is called "How to rewire your anxious brain." And if you email me I can send you an 88 page slideshow I'm healing from anxiety they have given to a number of mental health organizations. Keep trying everything you can to get better

    What if your loved one is feeling so hopeless that not ready to do anything to improve his condition ,there is no willingness or desire or motivation to take any action sitting on the same couch the whole day everyday . I am not able to convince him . Pls help I am in deep trouble.

Also you can work with a good counselor to help you to realize that there are limits on what you can do for another person unless he or she wants to help themselves. There's a saying from Alcoholics Anonymous, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

    Mr. Bloch,what about a person who is trying to wean off of SSRI,I’m finding it very difficult even with slowly weaning with smaller doses From 20 mg of celexa am down to 2.5 within 4 months,and feel like I am slipping back into depression.I’ve heard this drug can destroy your brain partially?? Can this heal over time?🙏🏼

      Weaning off SSRI's is difficult, but it can be done. I don't think an SSRI can destroy your brain. The brain is incredibly resilient. I hope you're working with a psychiatrist or a prescriber.     Dear Douglas..I love mindful meditation..but I have just discovered it. What do you think? Is it better to meditate with or without a mantra? I am about your age..we have similar memories. I like your videos very much..I have recently discovered them.
