This pitch was over a decade ago, but this guy is still trying to pedal his flow signals idea. He renewed his patent in September 2022 and his LinkedIn continues to talk about road safety. I actually feel sorry for him.
He does seem hugely emotionally invested in the idea. I get the feeling that he or a family member was likely involved in a traffic accident at some point. What he's trying to do is admirable, but the idea itself is just never going to work.

The other thing is that if you're only seeing the backs of signs, it's pretty clear it's a one way road.
Not to mention, they place reflective material on the backs of the signs and even in the road itself to warn the driver that something is wrong.

In the US we have "Wrong Way" signs but "Do Not Enter" signs are more commonly used.
@@fbi5161 Most people (who aren't driving belligerently drunk) don't see "Wrong Way" signs in the US because you actually have to be driving into incoming traffic to witness the sign.
I feel like this guy is just a horrible driver and blames the signs.
Ironically a system is currently being trialled in the UK with flashing lights and no entry symbols on the A1 and the M9.
i'm glad that i don't drive - cos i would be fucked up by a plague of signs everywhere - many of which are not immediately obvious - i thought that this guy was making a very valid point..
@@dannysmum9744 I think if you learned and spent some time driving it wouldn't be such a big deal. Yes, some roads and signs can be incredibly confusing when seeing them for the first time but with a little experience you will get to understand the gist.

I actually found his website a few years after he appeared on dragons den where he explained it. It's basically to have red flashing lights on the posts of traffic lights to warn people who are turning right that there is oncoming traffic. Bad drivers do try to turn right at traffic lights without realising they need to give way to drivers going the other way, but obviously this would not solve the problem. Anyway, he was still adamant that this was a good idea. You've gotta feel for the poor fella.

It's interesting, in Australia they introduced flashing LEDs on school zone speed times, because people kept missing them. The man's idea won't make any money, but what he's saying about peripheral vision and how easily people might miss some rudimentary sign actually makes sense. I feel sorry for the guy; he was made fun of on national TV.

It is a good idea, but you need funding for it and it’s just a flashing light so it’s not much of an invention.
That's also because school days are fairly fluid. The speed changes are active only on school days, but not everyone knows when school is in/out and the days in between which are test days etc.

@@heymistercarter. I mean that is the idea tbh, the powers that be rejected it so he took it to the market. Obviously it was rejected bc these rich people always defer to the powers that be in specialty areas. So it’s a cycle, where is the room for the general populace to make changes to the aesthetics of society, such as traffic signs and signals, if the powers that be disagree with what would be a good idea out of pure stubbornness due to the idea coming from a “lay man”.
By "running the signs" he means a driver paying attention to them, not the person running the office in charge of traffic signs.

@@martincurran6432 yes the actual invention is not only marginally useful but is way too expensive and high tech for what it does. My point was simply about the principle of it; that the one person in charge of this whole industry may be basing their opinion on the perceived public expense, but a private dragon investor coming on board could totally change the ballgame.
Not many people know Peter Jones actually lives in that chair. Okay, he gets out of it to shower, eat and do his business, but he sleeps in it and spends about 18 hours a day in it.
I just watched the "Dragons Check in on their Investments" video, and in it they say Peter's actually always running late to the studio haha

Professional call services work in the medical industry because there is so much uncertainty with peoples’ health (it’s not always easy to diagnose things) and works with computers because most software issues can be solved by the user with instructions. When it comes to auto repair the vast majority of the time you either need to to be mechanically adept to some degree with the proper tools, or simply take it to an auto shop
@@clownworld4655 car doctor in the modern day of apps could definitely work, being able to send pictures and videos of your car’s damage and issues to a neutral third party evaluator before going to a mechanic that can overcharge you or overdiagnose the problem

That’s no entry ⛔️ wrong way says literally “wrong way” on it. US has them. Generally white with black text. Usually on the back of other signs.
That's a no entry sign, not necessarily wrong way. I have gone the wrong way down a one way street before, but it's not like you need flashing lights to solve the problem, just better placement/more no entry signs.
No, that's a no entry sign. If you don't see that sign and start driving the wrong way down the one-way street, there's no sign that tells you you're doing something wrong. Thing is, there's no sign because it's very rare for people to go the wrong way down one-way streets, so no sign is really needed.

Awe, idk why but I feel terribly sad for him. :( He's simple, straightforward, and doesn't try to postulate as something he's not. He didn't have any real approvals or testimonials and he said as much. If he had a better idea, his dedication and honesty would make him a good business partner.
Never go into business with someone who can take a simple, universal solution and overcomplicate it with flashing lights.

It's probably the reason why the dragons didn't try to angrily dismiss him like they usually would when an arrogant pitcher has a bad or misleading idea.
They had installed solar powered red flashing lights on the poles of four stop signs at a dangerous intersection on a country road near my home in New Jersey, USA. Since the installation three years ago, it is much easier for people to see the STOP signs at night and has decreased the number of collisions which used to happen on a yearly basis. The inventor is correct, these lights grab the attention of the drivers and save lives.
Maybe it was Derek's flow system 😂😅

The fact that the people in charge of implementing these don't like them should have been the first and only moment he needed to realize it's not a good idea.
He probably came onto the show out of desperation, but having looked at the application form for the show. It doesn't remotely fulfill the minimum standards i.e. patents and proof of company ownership. I'm guessing the production were either naive and didn't care, or thought it would make for excellent entertainment.
My guess is, he encountered a very specific problem on a very specific occasion, and then developed a solution for it.

It's cause time can be exaggerated for effect, a few hours spent waiting can be presented as years cause it felt so long, and a couple minutes spent on a 20 hour game can be treated as a few seconds cause that's not enough time to do much. Honestly, some roads in my home town do this and it works well and isn't at all confusing. The lights are solar powered too so the entity is self-reliant.
@@rchcc122 most drivers would understand this, but don't forget some drivers appear to have won their licence in a cereal box, and some older drivers can get confused as things are - plus we're all prone to mistakes or lapses in concentration.
On the odd 1 or 2 roads it may work - but to role out nationality on all roads would end in disaster.

This one is truly iconic.
In all honesty, all of these potential “problems” can easily be solved by being an attentive driver. You can even miss some signs, but you’re clearly going to observe the traffic and the traffic patterns. Literally nothing about this makes sense.

Oddly enough the street below mine is a one way street and I cross it several times a week on my way back from work/shopping.
Every time I do so I see the no entry signs there and think this guy had a point. Putting no entry signs facing directly outwards is of no use whatsoever to someone approaching the junction at a 90 degree angle to them, and you shouldn't have a situation where you only realise a street is no entry when you've started to make a turn. I've seen several cars do that.
Unfortunately for this guy, just angling the signs differently is a much more sensible, practical and cheaper solution.
If they were turned at an angle it would confuse or likely to confuse and appear for the road your on not the road you intend to turn into.
This is so sad, he seems so genuine and nice :(
I know, but he needed to be given a sharp shock to be told it wasn’t going to work. Even that still didn’t work as he’s still pursuing it today so doing a softly sugar coating approach certainly wouldn’t have. It’s tough love.

And honestly the idea must have been a good one, because the UK are starting to add lights to signs on major motorways. They're testing it on the M1, and another road that I forgot, to see if it works before rolling it out over the country.

@glyn hodges I think it's crap on main roads and won't get adopted. But personally, having to drive a lot stopping in crappy dark parking areas such as services, it would be a great system for working my way towards the exit, so the "off road" use of these signs interests me.

1) You need the complete backing of government.
2) If you implement the new signs, there is a good potential that a lot of accidents will happen because the process will be new for drivers who are starting to learn and figure out what the signs mean and how to drive on the road with them.

I think this is actually a good idea for the vast multi storey car parks we have in Malaysia shopping malls. For the traffic lights/signs it wouldn't work as no one takes any notice of them anyway.

As absolutely ridiculous as the idea is, I can't help but feel bad for Derek. It's pretty clear this is something that, for reasons that baffle me, he feels very passionate about, and you could hear the sadness in his voice as each Dragon brutally tears him down. I'm sure that, to this day, he's still baffled as to how they could not see the "genius" in his idea.

This is actually a very great upgrade from the old signs.
They can be seen in night, fog, and in heavy snow.
They are better but it has to be approved and rolled out by government and there's 0 chance of that happening. Maybe he could sell them to Thailand.
Just add lighting to the existing sign. There's no need to add a total new system that overcomplicates things.
