  • Introverts are often misunderstood and judged as being shy. Introversion can actually be a powerful personality type if you harness the benefits!
In this episode of Ratalyst, we shed light on an introvert’s personality and the difference between introversion and extroversion. Although introverts are often labelled as shy and quiet, this can be far from the mark, and knowing how to make the most of your introverted qualities can drastically change your life for the better. We provide some ideas on identifying whether or not you might be an introvert to some degree, and highlight some areas where this personality style can be utilised as a great benefit. Don’t let yourself be bottled into someone else’s idea of an introvert - harness your introversion and be the change!
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ratalyst is about change. Sharing ideas to shape your world and live a fulfilled and satisfying life. We take inspiration from books, TED talks, articles and anything that presents an idea to enhance your life.

+6d I'm nearing graduation with a degree in IT and I've been paying attention to where I want to work. Seems like the big companies want loud and socially connected tech workers. I'm not social but was able to excel in a sales job because I pieced a formula together for conversations but I certainly cannot pass for cool for more than 20 minutes. I'm a bit worried about my job prospects since I'll have trouble fitting in. In fact, I got hired at a different sales job and quit after the first day because I felt so much of an outsider to the other workers, I think it was a solid choice that I felt bad about at the time.
My ideal job is by myself and quiet.

how to get money to maintain your hobbies, getting food, without having too big of a pain to work is the question
computer science IT stuff is obvious but not all introverts enjoy that sadly(including me), probably gonna end up constructor, structural engineer or something like that in the end, no idea will i enjoy it or despise it.

I don't understand why most of the world tries to pathologize introversion when it's pretty clear most scientific, philosophical, etc. breakthroughs were made by people with the luxury of silent reflection.

    • @psychedelicdreamer986
      @psychedelicdreamer986 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

Yeah, I often say to people: if you want to make a breakthrough of some kind you lock yourself up in a lab or go meditate on a mountain, it's not found in crowds or the supermarket. The world needs introverts, they should just understand not all introverts are scary loners that you have to watch out for. When I saw this video it was really the first time I realised that extraverts recharge from social situations. That's the opposite from how introverts feel (and opposite from how I feel), they must not understand anything of introverts at all! And since they're the majority ( so they decide what's "normal"), it's easy to dismiss introverts as crazy and deviant.

"Extroverts tend to cut people off in conversations"
This, is the main reason I avoid participating in debates and/or small talks with "nothing of value". When I do speak up about a topic with substance and get cut off I immediately feel resentment towards that person, and while I'd get emotional internally I prefer to shut up and let it slide to avoid conflict - it's just not worth it.

    • @alextrebek8293
      @alextrebek8293 7 ปีที่แล้ว +62

Understand completely. I don't even bother trying to have a meaningful conversation with those people. They only have a 2 second attention span and i need more time than that to get my point across

    • @Divionist
      @Divionist 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

I have a friend who's an extrovert and in many scenarios when I speak of a topic with substance, after a few seconds of him listening or if I go on too long he'll cut me off and start his small talk about hot girls or clothes, stuff like that.
-repetitively bangs my head on table-
I need to find an introvert girlfriend and maybe an introverted friend.

I almost never feel the need to be social. All I want is a nice woman in my life to love me and a couple friends. Even then, I can go days, even weeks without socializing. And I'm proud of it. I hate people who judge me for this. Being social isn't enjoyable unless its a one on one activity or *maybe* a group of 3 people, so why should I go out of the way to just to cater to the worldview that insists you need to socialize frequently to be happy? This just isn't true. I am happy.

Why? What's to feel sorry for? Not all women like to be social too. That's exactly the kind of woman us introverts need. It is far more intimate imo when you don't spend both your lives with 100 different people. I'm obvious not alone with this opinion, considering how many likes my post got.

This video should be made popular. Most extroverts assume that extroversion is the norm and that introversion is some sort of abnormality. I'm so sick of everyone telling me "it's just a phase" or "you'll get over it someday" when it's actually who I am. It's my personality, not a disease. I just simply don't like to talk most of the time.

I see. So I am an introvert. However, i think most people around me are hypocrites. They go on and on about how I am weird, not social, too objective etc. Yet when they need genuine opinion about something, they come to me. Usually they get angry because as soon as the conversation starts to get boring, i walk away. I HAVE NO CLOSE FRIENDS.

All the new people i meet are confused when i don't answer the phone, don't reply to messages and make excuses not to go out with them... It's surprisingly hard for most people to understand that drawing, playing the piano or just watching a movie with my cat means i'm busy.

the only thing that's ever bothered me about being an introvert is the negative stigma that comes along with it. I never felt bad that I hate crowds or don't enjoy small talk. I literally have two friends: my hubby and my son, I love it that way. it took my husband years to realize introversion was a real thing, as he is a total extrovert. I love my introverted life and habits, but dear extroverts, don't feel like we are negative, or haughty, or don't like you. I love people. I love to listen to people, but it has to be one person at a time and for very short bursts. don't hate!!! ;-)

Interesting. I am most likely an introvert yet I feel perfectly comfortable giving public speeches or presenting to an audience. I found that it is not the joy of being the center of attention that allows me to present my material comfortably, but rather a complete disconnect from the social component of my presentation. I present my material and don't give a f*!k how I or anyone else feels about it. Without the disconnect I am sure I would crumble like so many do in front of so many observers.
edit... and at 9:15 the narrator makes exactly this point. Great video!

OMG, the same happens to me lol, i am good at writing communication, but when i am speaking with someone, sometimes i go back and forth of what i was talking, sometimes i can think of much more words than i am able to speak, and sometimes i stutter. And with the presentation i really get very nervous because it happened to me that when i have to give a presentation there is always a question that i can't answer (even by preparing myself with all the material i have at disposal).

+Joshua Mendieta Yes! Me too, I even stutter sometimes, though I don't think I officially classify as a stutterer lol. And one of my biggest problems is I'm redundant! Like I don't think I phrased something well, so I say it again, but usually phrase it the same crappy way lol.

When I was young I was told that I would grow out of it. I'm 33 now and of course I didn't. At least I understand why I am this way instead of loathing myself because I wasn't a certain way. I feel like society overwhelmingly expects you to show traits of an extrovert. Also some people act like I am dumb for not having much to say. They assume that my mind is empty when it's actually quite full with my thoughts and my words are multiple choice from A to Z.
I hope society can better understand introverts in the future. That just because we're introverts doesn't mean that we don't care about people/friends/family.. We need to be alone sometimes and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm just trying to be polite but not sure how to cut the conversation and I keep talking crap until they find a way to stop talking to me. Like the video says, know yourself and use your strengths. It could very well be not that you have no social skills but that you are not "skilled" in the situations you find yourself in. In any case it's not your "fault" how you are naturally in these social situations. Change the situations, avoid them if you have to but above all love yourself and avoid guilt for not being different than you're nature ... there's nothing "wrong" with you because you can't act out a forced, societally induced role convincingly. peace.

I’m an introvert myself and I’m glad you mentioned that not all introverts are “shy.” While I was shy as a kid (mostly from lack of social skills), I became a pretty confident person when I became involved in theatre. Were it not for theatre I probably wouldn’t be the person I am today. I used to think there was something wrong with me as a kid. I would come home from school and tell my mom that I’d played by myself and she said to try playing with others. While I did eventually make friends, I still preferred being on my own. Now that I’ve grown up and know what introversion is I feel way better. I know my limits and don’t push myself to do anything I’m not comfortable with in social situations because I know it’ll drain me. Nowadays I love art, writing stories, and music. I still have a very active imagination, which as an actor and writer is very convenient. I hoe anyone struggling like I did when I was younger will understand that it’s okay to feel this way. It’s not a mental disorder. It’s just something special about you. Many of the things in this video perfectly describe me. Thank you!

I absolutely loved this video!!!! It was like I wrote it about myself. I love my alone time..I "have" to get my alone time. Small talk is so irritating and I just stay far away from it. When I'm in public, like going for a walk, I won't meet someone eye to eye because I've done this in the past and it led into a long, flowing, roll the eyes small talk terror. I love finding people who can actually carry on a real conversation. I detest shopping in malls as I find a lot of people just don't respect personal space and boundaries and I'm not good with that. In the past I've been called cold, snobby, rude, shy, stuck-up and anti-social. I just look at these people and say "no, I'm an introvert." Most times I see a puzzled look on their face. I've been told it's just a phase I'm going through. I'm 51-years old and I'm past phases. I have enjoyed my own company since I was a child. I have a very small circle of friends and they all turn to me when they want/need someone to listen. I certainly do embrace being an introvert and I'm definitely proud :) Thank you for this video :)

In my opinion the cause why we introverts lose our energy quickly is because we want to get something and the extros dont give a fuck.
We want to get approval, be liked by everybody, we are perfectionists and try to say the best quote, we filter our thoughts too much and get muscles tenses by the fear of rejection.

I usually score 100% introverted on the meyers-brigg, but I have always wondered if this is because this is my personality or because I am deaf and social situations require more energy for me to keep up the more people there are. My close handful of friends and family I have a much easier time talking with, so I tend to just spend time with them over meeting new people.

Yeah, I'm an introvert and I totally know these extroverts interrupting you and telling you later, you should talk more...
Most of the time I don't feel like talking then anymore. And I don't really feel the need to explan, I just aggree nodding to get my break again...XD
Yeah, I am a great listener and I have my "good friends", but some people are just...yeah exhausting.
And some people will never realise, that I *can* talk much, if we were talking about the right things and if they let me.
Edit: The very hard thing is, if they just don't stop talking after interupting you. Sometimes I just go on talking, but they then get louder and louder, that I think: Nah, if they don't want to know, I won't make them to.
Very funny, if they're seaking for an answere or where to go or how to do stuff or something like that... and I know, but they won't listen, after I treid to tell it at least twice.
(But at my school people learned the hard way, they should listen to me, as I stopped trying to tell them and just do the stuff or go there and let them see, that I know, what they don't. They learned to listen to me.
I'm curios, if the people at my university now will learn this as well^^
(Well, at least some few already did, and one of them is even an extrovert! But only if I talk to her in a small round...XD))

This video got me when I heard the bit about shutting out the world when feeling depleted from external stimulations. I've long been thinking that something was seriously wrong with me in my relationships because after being active and social with my friends for a while, I'd feel this urge to shut it all out and be by myself. I used to think I was doomed for building relationships - I didn't have a good explanation for the way I was behaving. Though I'm not 100% sure this matches what the video was talking about, I feel much better about myself with a new perspective. I think I'd be at a better position to manage my relationships if I let my friends know about this aspect of my personality. That way they'll more likely feel okay with me being distant and seemingly all of a sudden wanting to reconnect. Thank you for the video! Please keep up the good work.

My personality falls in 99% of an introvert spectrum.
I must say that the person who came up with this video, we think in a similar way.
In the past, I used to think that there was something wrong with me and I felt that I needed to change myself to be a normal person like an extrovert. It's been a long time since I have embraced my introversion. Being an introvert is not a curse, it's a gift.
I am really glad to find this video. Thank you Ratalyst, I enjoyed watching this video.

excellent video! this really helped me enjoy my introversion. i saw introversion in a wrong way. i thought its just a term for quiet and isolated people. in the past year everyone always told me im very quiet and i should talk with them more and it got into my mind so i constantly had think about it while being with a group of people. ive tried to improve and got better at it but im still not comfortable at smalltalking etc. now i know through all these symptoms what exactly i have so i can feel a lot better. thanks for this video keep it up!

This is the most relatable video I have ever watched. I LOVE acting and public speaking, and I hate small talk! I never know what to say to people. The fact that most people I speak to simply don't understand what it's like to be an introvert made this video relieving in many ways. Thank you for making me feel better about who I am.

To be honest I almost got shivers cause each point of your work touched me somehow. I knew I might be an introvert, though I wasn't aware of some of its symptoms which you made obvious af.

omg this is 100% me. I always prepare what I'm going to say. It's strange cause I find myself talking to myself from time to time. Over thinking ever situation no matter how big or small it is. Even if I get a text I will spend minutes thinking about what to say and how I'm going to say it. It's quit annoying, but I found I really help people out with my thoughts ^^ so maybe its not so bad after all.

I'm an introvert and my skills are:
-I can hide my presence in any group of people
-i hate small talk but if you start a conversation with me get ready cause this will be a long conversation
-i can judge the personality of a person
-i am use on being alone
-for me knowledge is power reading books and other things that can improve my skills
    -I'm a deep thinker
-i use logic in solving my problems
-I don't need a lot of friends 1 or 2 is OK as long as he or she accept me for who I am
    - I'm an independent person if I have problems I solve it by myself
    - and lastly I cannot fall in love easily
    that's all what's yours.

This is totally me, expect maybe for the last point. I don't know about love but I can get attached to people easily (unhealthily easy), I start off by not trusting them at all, then somewhere along the line decide it's ok to trust them and get completely attached. So far, this hasn't worked out well for me.

Thank you for posting this great video. I just realised that I may just be an introvert. I always thought, that being the one I am around extroverts is wrong. I always wondered why everyone speaks up earlier, although they may say something wrong. Extroverts simply don't care. In my opinion this behaviour was wrong because you should be able to authentically present or say something.
Now, everything weaves itself into a bigger picture. Thank you very much. You helped me with criticising my personality less. Hopefully from now on, I will be able to embrace my character and be able to use it.

I wish introversion didn't have such a negative meaning when I was young. Don't waste your time trying to be an extrovert if it's not your nature. You're much more interesting than a huge portion of the often annoying extroverts.

Love your video and glad I found it! I own Susan Cain's book "Quite" on introverted personalities. I've always known that I was different and recently acknowledged that yes, I am an introvert, identify closely as an empath, and I'm also a Cancer. A triple threat...to myself! LOL! I'll add, I have gotten along quite well in life--highly creative, and successful at my job, even though I'm a product of an extremely dysfunctional family. Touché!
