- Hey everyone welcome to more Scrap Mechanic! Today we are going through a simple tutorial on how to build a piston engine for survival mode! A lot of people have been asking how the piston engine I use is setup so I went through how to make one and connect it to some wheels for all your survival needs!

You posted this two days after I figured out how to make it myself. It took a few hours of agony and watching clips in slow motion, but it paid off. 10/10 would do again

Hot tip: If you are trying to go at high speeds, switch the piston lengths to 2 instead of 3 to have it run smoothly!

i did the same but i didn't have much difficulty it took me like 20 minutes. mine looks a little bit different though and its not block for block but it works the same way.
@@Omlet221 I kept missing really simple parts cause whenever I blinked I missed something - mostly without noticing for a good while.
ended up getting an exact replica by the end of it which is pretty fun, though

Dude massive thanks, this is awesome. modified yours into a 2 cyl design, similar but works better for my applications. You know its a good tutorial when someone whos bad at the game

Yours is niche... no upgrades needed but you need logic gates...so very dependent on your start location...
Your design is a little different, it's just that it works the same way on the most basic plan of engineering
The piston doesnt work I’ve look at this video multiple time and still havent figured what the problem is

I experience really jumpy motion even with the coloured blocks

@@bart0nboy I had this issue, make sure you put bearings behind the sensors
It doesnt work cause the pistols need an engine
Tip for people building: upgrade the controller to level 3 and connect the forwards piston to it, now set the piston to go 1 block when the controller is on and make sure the controller is set to repeat. After that connect the controller to your seat and now when you hold W you will go forwards!

Did this got pached, because mine doesn't work. I'm in 0.4.3, and my middle section doesn't want to obey the controller, not even a single degree. Please somebody help me

Works fine for me. it did take me a couple of hours ( I forgot the bearing behind the piston sensor). Had to follow his guide and connect everything in order and make sure parts were correctly welded and when making modifications, it depends on whether or not the whole structure is on a lift or not. The order of when installing stuff matters on and off a lift as seen on his video.
I made a car that uses two of these- one for each rear wheel- its wide and occasionally the steering slowly drifts but it has a lot of power and can haul 1125 of the heavy tier three concrete and still manage to start rolling and pickup speed. any more than that and it doesn't like starting.
how do you make it attach to both at the same time thats what i cant do it just only ataches to one part and i dont know how to make it atach to both 3:15

heres a better idea, shove a wedge into the wheel, don't even need pistons. i discovered it, if you don't belive me. look up in the scrap mechanic workshop: "cheat of all cheats" and it should be the first one to come up. oh and while your at it, i made a piston engine that is stupid fast, you should check that out too. no really, its my first one and its lightning fast.
I've been watching your videos for a long time, together with scrapman and moonbo ... I've never had scrap mechanic ... survival comes out, the hype rises, steam offers it and of course I buy it ... I start survival and I seem to be 2 years old and playing with cubes with letters, my constructions are an abomination ... I see your video on the piston engine and I take an intensive course to understand how they work, how to build them but above all how they use the controls, I don't even know how to weld and it all farlo off in pieces every time ... I can finally understand after 6 hours how to do it...

What happens if you activate forward and back at the same time?
Should you use an Xor gate on one of them (Fwd/Back) to prevent that from happening?
I think it would either alternate in a small arc, or stall. It might work as a sort of e brake. On a basic one I wouldn't worry about logic, if you are trying to do something complicated go all out.
Don't really need a piston engine if you get a controller on loop with max speed and max rotation, but good nonetheless for people wanting a piston engine car
Does a maxed out controller give as much traction as a piston engine though? Genuinely curious. From what I've seen and tested so far, piston engines seem extremely good at tracting very heavy payloads.

Kan, a cool idea for a piston engine would be to use pistons powering half the revolution and then suspension for the ”dead part”. Probably very hard to control, but would be cool to see if it made the engine more powerful
Perfect design, using real combustion engine principles such as an even firing interval, given this is a three cylinder they fire 120 degrees apart and a four cylinder would every 90 along with how you talk about the secondary forces where the pistons if unbalanced will shake a lot making it 6 cylinders where it is the 3 cylinder but mirrored.Thank you so much I’m getting this game for this alone

I dont know what is wrong with my game when ever i connect everything all my turning pipes just leave their bearing and the engine does not work

the bearings and pistons don't highlight green for me, is this a setting I accidentally turned off or something
3:24 how do you weld like that? When I try to weld using the normal left click it does not work
Needs to be in a lift and the parts touching
2 parts that are separated by 2 or more bearings can be connected if you aim at one, hold left click, and aim at the other then let go

If you upgrade a controller to level 5 and put 5 bearings on each side back wheel, loop it with 360 degree rotation. You get infinite fuel. PS you can hook it up to the seat and S will be backwards and W will go forwards. I hope I helped.

i tryed this and sadly i must say it dosent work even with full upgrades it just stalls

Yo kAN whenever I set the angle of the bearings it fights the pistons and it’s identical to yours. (If you don’t mind helpin out ping me on your server same username no spaces)
I got it to work with 105, but not 120
The Golden TNT have you got 4 bearings if so just take what you know and build it again as I had that problem and that fixed it will be something stupid that is hard to spot

Found out it’s useful to set the pistons to 2 because sometimes the sensors are half a block in and don’t sense one of the blocks

Had the same problem, but after putting the second bearing that's connected to the controller to 240 instead of 120, the pistons worked like a charm, maybe this can help?
I watched this video about 20 times before I got it all working in Survival, 1st attempt the frame crumbled apart altho I apparently did weld it together one bit wasn't and it just exploded. 2nd attempt the entire frame just tumbled over and over and basically rolled off (forgot the top bearings). 3rd attempt it broke at the side bearings and the pistons just basically fell off. Anyway long story cut short, it didn't all work until I put the wheels on but it still looks like it's broke at the top bearing/joint above the pistons. Am gonna push on and build the rest of the frame and see what happens.

Couldn't you put pistons on the end of the direct drive system to make them 'glitch' through blocks so you don't need blocks on the outer edge of the wheel like everyone does in creative?
Man I just don't get these advanced building tips. Sensors and pistons I'm just not that smart
Has anyone actually gotten this to work? I followed it step by step but when you try to add a wheel the wood never connects from the bearing you connect to the wheel.

This is an EXTREMELY expensive thing to do if you don't spend all your time just wandering around and going into abandoned buildings and fighting farmbots.
i think this doesn't on level 5 pistons because they are extremely hard and they can't extend just with rotating the bearings with the controller

Nice. Combined that to make some big bast**d. Two rotary Pistonengines and two additional ones in the back, one for each wheel. So I got an AWD, pistonengine driven vehicle without any propshaft or something else :D (also has a bending centre so I can turn without doing a little world tour, like a bus) Thanks for giving me that idea!
Welp, the hours I spent figuring out how to make one seem wasted, but now my parts list is shorter, thank you kAN.
Is there a reason you're using 3-phase instead of 4-phase input? Namely, why 3 pistons at 120 degrees instead of 4 pistons at 90 degrees? It's bulkier, but I think some creative arrangement of the crankshaft and control surfaces could make the thing behave a bit better and reduce the material cost.
I don't understand why the other button makes it rotate the opposite direction, can anybody explain?
Edit: Also, when I connect the "noodle bendy guy" from bearing to piston, it just locks them in place and they can no longer rotate. I've tried following your exact steps 3 times now from scratch :(
Its really weird, I managed tu build a piston engine based on this model and it works really great, but i have no idea why, when i rebuilt it in survival performances really sucked, i had to upgrade the pistons to full (i wasted 32 components kits on this...) for it to barely work, I dont know if it's because I had suspensions on the free wheels and a resource collector (super heavy part) but man Im so disappointed. Anyway the build is really cool, and it worked amazing on my creative test vehicle (with a transmission system similar to the one you made on your survival world) and it's an impressive contraption
I know you built a stationary base but have you considered making a mobile one? I know you need to use the terrain to grow things but you could use that piston engine to propel your mobile home. You could (probably) grow your crops quickly with fertilizer and then be gone before the bots show up. Need to do some mining? Make a second vehicle for that.

Then again storage and maneuverability on a mobile base might become an issue if it's too big for the latter. Something to think about.
Hello, I am currently playing scrap mechanic on may 11th and this doesn't work for me, I have built it off of memory and built a second exactly like in the video. I think the problem I have is that I think the remote controllers have the bearings set at 120 degrees for both and won't move, anyone else have that problem?
Built an engine, easy enough. The devs recently reintroduced a certain glitch that helps the "RA unit" bearing-based stabilizer work, and my piston engine doesn't start. I copied the tutorial perfectly.
Also, when you say "You could do a gear like this", you don't actually hook the gear to the drive, and so I don't actually know how it works. I don't suppose any future piston engine videos might explain how to connect them proper?
I improvised a crappy suspension glitch powered propulsion system for my car, but it's big and ugly, and turning is a pain too, so i think i'm gonna stick to your design for now until i refine my own. Thanks for the tutorial by the way, really helped to understand the mechanics, i only got the game today cause of survival update
Even with max upgraded pistons, I couldn't get more that the smallest bit of movement on the smallest vehicle I built, and it couldn't carry any additional weight. I thought it was supposed to have mad torque?

How long of a piston engine could you make with this design? What's the most powerful piston engine you can make in survival for huge torque mobile bases, or would multiple piston engines work better?
Oh and you could use it to paralyze farmbots. By automatically make the water kannons shoot automatic and make it spin. As long as you could pump more water than they shoot.

he say's "it's not the best on the workshop" But it is.... Well if it was on the workshop. Like said everything I found on the shop was mainly super convoluted this engine is perfect.
Tried this, followed the instructions exactly. It wouldn't work. The best I got was a wildly spinning, out of control frame when I had the pistons at their highest speed. I don't know what I was doing wrong.

So I don't quite understand how it works. I was able to replicate it and do alot of testing but still have one question. Because each piston/sensor on the 'crack shaft' is seperated by a bearing how does it supply power? In theory the middle piston on its power stroke is only turning a T pipe with bearings on both ends which shouldn't supply power to the rest of the shaft. I've tested in game and that theory is wrong. The center piston does power it as well so why are the bearings between each piston not free spinning and instead acting solid? Is it the controller that locks them in place one they have their angle set?
you guys (the multiplayer Monday people) should do a survival world together.
Edit: I have confirmed I am stupid....forgot bearings on the sensors. It works wonderfully now!

Thats pretty much exactly how i built mine in survival accept my pistons faced the opposite direction. For some reason they were getting stuck on the axel when I tried placing them the way you did.
is there a reason that the piston engine wouldn't have the torque to go up a hill? the engine works but if i go to a hill the tires just spin? and I have max pistons.
I have a small trailer attached to the car with 2 resource collectors but they are empty when trying to go up a hill. if anyone knows :P thanks all
i used another tutorial for the basic shape, but stole the way yours looked for mine :D though my piston engine has the jerky motion you showed, with the piston getting detected by the sensor. happened after i upgraded my pistons to level 3, before that there was no issues.. gonna invest in a painting tool.. and upgrades for the sensors.
If I were to build it with more pistons do I just change the controller settings or will it work with just fine. Like making it with two pistons do I put the controller setting to 180 degrees and for four change it to 90 degrees will the trigger work for a different number of sensors, I saw a two piston engine but it had logic gates and four sensors, and when I turn it off it take a while to start. This one looks a lot easier to make in survival

controller doesn't rotate the bearings in new updates, it's just creating this infinite torque glitch where it keep rotating the whole thing forever, old designs work perfectly, but a 1 to 1 copy is broken now
Is this expandable? Changing the angle of the pistons rotation in division of the number of pistons you have seems like it would work..
kAN i found my problem i did everything correctly but forgot to put bearings behind my sensor srry man and thank you asoon as it starts they jam up causing whole frame to become one unit
Awesome. So for a car you could have this rigged up for RWD and then have a driver's seat with steering bearing on the front tires, or something.
