We Gen Xers had the BEST cartoons ever! We had Voltron, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Spiral Zone, and Masters of the Universe. Kids today have ....."Peppa pig", "Sponge Bob", and "Paw patrol".
I remember being floored as a kid by how legitimately awesome this was. The heavy metal clang his hands make together when he forms the sword is the most unashamedly epic thing I'd seen. I still get chills.
For me, it was 1986. I will never forget the day I saw those lions fly into the sky in an attempt to form Voltron. As a cartoon, it shaped my childhood, and so many others too.
We he clacked his arms together, I almost passed out. As a 7 year old growing up in the 80s, this one scene set a precedent that no other animated series could come close to at that time.
One of the greatest animated shows ever in my opinion. No CGI, no computer aided assistance, this was real creative imagination that made a kid like me at 8 years old at that time wish I was Voltron. Such epic memories.
As a child I watched this and marveled. Now as an adult with responsibilities and children to raise I still find myself thinking about forming blazing swords from my hands. What a great cartoon.
Yeah, however it is not only Voltron's greatest Strength, but his greatest weakness....When he forms the sword, all of his energy/power abilities are placed into it. So it's known as his Last Resort because none of his other abilities are avaliable.
My life will be incomplete until I see a live action version of this, and that fucking theme starts playing in the final battle. It must be so. GO VOLTRON, GO!

No other director will use the original cartoon as the sole means of story material as they will attempt to put theirselves into the story, making a potential movie suck. The only way that won't happen is an ironclad, unbreakable, set-in-stone, forbidden to even make a suggestion to the contrary clause in the contract stating the 1984-1986 cartoon is the sole material for story, canon, all ancillary items. Also an overseer of some kind to mask sure they comply. Such a contract would have to have dire consequences if violated. Example :Any attempt to circumvent, change, defy, suggestion to try anything to contrary to the above provision constitutes violation of the contract and triple damages, the immediate termination of the project and rights revert to original owners. No established director, producer or film company will sign that kind of contract but it would protect a potential movie. An unknown director and independent film company might.
You have to love the robeast's facial expression at 1:11...It totally reads; "Holy crap, I'm about to have my ass served to me on a five-lion course platter"....LONG LIVE LION FORCE VOLTRON....best cartoon ever.
Admit it all of us who were alive then and had the toys: You had to do the whole "Active interlocks" thru "and I'll form the head" dialog whenever you put them together. And you hummed the theme while doing it. I was a child of the 80's and damn proud of it!!!

They literally hooked a generation of kids with this sequence. The first episodes of this opening miniseries were mostly just talk about Voltron, but when you finally see him come together in these last few minutes it left you just wanting more. Talk about leaving an audience on a high! It's lasted almost 40 years...and counting!

Every time I watch anything of my Childhood cartoon wise, I always smile. Especially anything Voltron Related. 47 now, and I still love the music the sound of the roars from the lions. I always got hyped as a child when they formed their sword. Still remember owning the toy. Die cast metal blue and Yellow lions. Made that toy so heavy. Lost my shit when my cousin dropped my blue lion and the stomach split open. Not going to lie I punched my cousin that day. I really also became a doctor to fix my toy. lol
On the Death Battles TH-cam page, one video, they set up Voltron vs. Power Rangers. "In the final fight, Voltron got into trouble, but Pidge and his courage wound up winning the fight". (Won't spoil the video, should see it).
More like Voltron brings an inspiration of the megazords we knew today. As most megazords in the Sentai series before Voltron, they were just transforming vehicles or just giant robots from the start without forming together. But after Voltron, that's when the Sentai series pretty much start to pull out something similar and it sticks with the Sentai/power rangers afterwards.
You know it's funny that every time I see the classic Voltron and watch that part where they unite the lions and form the mighty robot whenever the combining sequence is completed and you hear Voltron become energized when you hear that it's the same sound effects of the weapons fire of the Martian War Machines from the original War of the Worlds man that was quite surprising to say the least.
Man I'll bet if this was like something out of Transformers it would be like when the Black Lion is roaring saying 'Lions let's transform and unite to form Voltron' and after they combined and landed in front of that Robeast they would all be saying together 'OHHHHH ZARKON LOOK WHO'S BAAAAAAACK' now that would be funny to think as every time I watch the original Voltron series both with the Lions and with the vehicles that is exactly what it reminds me of.
Man just seeing the look on the face of that first Robeast the team fought after bringing Voltron back when the Robeast saw Voltron man the look on his face was priceless it was like he was thinking 'Man I am so seriously screwed'.
This transformation during that generation was probably equivalent to when Goku first bcame a Super Saiyan and Gohan becoming a Super Saiyan 2. It was just epic for that generation because up until that point, it was unique. There wasn't anything like it. It was something we had never seen before. I just remember the hoopla that this caused in school the very next day. Everybody was talking about it, the school girls and one of my school teachers talked about it too. Man!... That's just good times, right there.

Japan didn't give us Voltron, World Events Productions did, all Japan gave us were the animation cells, the story, music, voices, etc were all American, GoLion is NOTHING, NOTHING like Voltron, not even close!

Man how much anyone wants to bet back at the Castle of Lions Allura and Coran were watching this on the monitors with Allura crying tears of joy thinking 'Oh Father if you could see this the Mighty Voltron has returned' and with Coran probably thinking 'It's a Miracle the King of Robots is back'.

In my country they played a re-run around 1998. I was six at the time. To us kids in kindergarten, we were all mad about Voltron. We spoke the words like mantra: Формирайте стъпалата и краката! (Form feet and legs) Формирайте ръцете и тялото! (Form arms and body) А аз ще формирам главата! (And I'll form the head) It was a good childhood. And I miss it.
The first time I saw it, this sequence was awesome. After a dozen or so episodes we just changed the channel when it started cuz we knew exactly how it was going to go from that point on.
Little known fact Voltron was one of the first if not the first shows to broadcast in stereo so when I was a kid all the TV stores would turn to Voltron to show off the quality of stereo sound.
I agree the transformation has to be on the greatest of all animation history when that came out. The first episode is legendary and iconic. In 1984 l was 11 and in the 5th grade. I would run to the store after school and go straight to the store. Bacon Cheetos and football bubble gum l would get to watch Voltron. Aww l miss and at times think about my childhood memories. Japan didn't give us Voltron, World Events Productions did, all Japan gave us were the animation cells, the story, music, voices, etc were all American, GoLion is NOTHING, NOTHING like Voltron, not even close!
@The Fantom Convoy because GoLion =/= Voltron. Voltron is an American creation using Japanese animation cells, everything, and I mean literally everything but the drawn animation is American. The music, stories, voices, everything but the animation is American.

Animes that are known in UsA during old times are from Japan, like Gundam Wing.

Man how much anyone wants to bet back at the Castle of Lions Allura and Coran were watching this on the monitors with Allura crying tears of joy thinking 'Oh Father if you could see this the Mighty Voltron has returned' and with Coran probably thinking 'It's a Miracle the King of Robots is back'.
43 and seeing this brought back childhood memories. My brother and I would recreate the transformation process and we each had the metalic toy back in the 80s
They seriously need to make a movie out of this just like transformers

In my country they played a re-run around 1998. I was six at the time.
To us kids in kindergarten, we were all mad about Voltron.
We spoke the words like mantra:

I love older animation where you can see the subtle changes from being hand drawn. Gives it a great feel like that lil hiss from vinyl records.

The first time I saw it, this sequence was awesome. After a dozen or so episodes we just changed the channel when it started cuz we knew exactly how it was going to go from that point on.
Little known fact Voltron was one of the first if not the first shows to broadcast in stereo so when I was a kid all the TV stores would turn to Voltron to show off the quality of stereo sound.
This had no business going this hard back in the day…….but we loved it!!!!!!!!!

I agree the transformation has to be on the greatest of all animation history when that came out. The first episode is legendary and iconic. In 1984 l was 11 and in the 5th grade. I would run to the store after school and go straight to the store. Bacon Cheetos and football bubble gum l would get to watch Voltron. Aww l miss and at times think about my childhood memories. Life was simplier,peaceful and wonderful. There will never ever be a great time like that like the early 80's. Thanks for posting.
i will never forget how much i loved seeing this moment for the first time as a 2nd grader. I still have a Voltron toy to this day bought in 1997 (clone of the original 1984 Matchbox set). When this movie comes out (when Hollywood gets it act together on this project) it will do gangbusters...
