In my opinion if you want to know who to trust about accuracy and detail of a tool or material in the construction world, it’s the cabinet guy. At least the guys doing high end custom stuff. There’s a ton of individual guys in other trades with crazy skills, but installing 3 dimensional objects plumb, level, flush, square and aligned consistently at the same time against walls and ceilings, or walls and floors that aren’t, at the same time, is not like cladding flat surfaces with linear product that painters come make look good after. So if a cabinet installer is impressed with a tool, it’s very unlikely it won’t meet your high standards.
I'm always finding your videos when I need to know something. This is a good sign that channel is serving the community well. AND I'm canadian so it all makes sense when you mention price!
I come from a different world, as a 1st AC (focus puller) in the film industry. Our laser measures have to be insanely accurate when we shoot long lens/wide open and have extremely shallow depth of field. Getting properly lens distances is crucial. The D2 is generally considered to be a good mid-tier measure and I’m thinking of buying it. The Hilti PD-E is the industry standard but that thing is $600-$700 USD
That’s very interesting, I never considered using the unit to get distances for pulling focus. I’ve recently just learned about hyoerfocal distances and have been learning how to set up a simple manual focus setup.
I read the little cheat card one time. Now I know what every button and button combination does. I’ll never need to look at the card again. Actually the buttons make sense and the little icons on the screen guide you if you can’t remember when selecting a function.
Yup… bought mine a few years back really just for crown moulding & baseboards… -With mine, if I take a heavy 1/16” off the (mitered) measurements everything fits pretty nicely… Definitely happy with it and carry it in my pouch daily 😊
Will it display in just inches and show 1/16 and or 1/32? For example, is it able to display 143" 1/16? I need a unit that is able to display in all inches and also show 1/16. Some will only display feet & inches and only 1/8". Thx.
How does do toward the max distance. I need to measure exactly 100 yards for testing optical equipment. I know that’s 30 yards below it’s maximum but I’m wondering how finicky it is at that point.. Thx 🙏
You need to hold down the plus and minus button for 2 seconds, this will toggle through the different measurements. It may take a few to get over to feet.
I have this. I use in my job as a Realtor. My husband is cabinetmaker and we are always cross checking laser against tape. Couple questions..do you ever calibrate? (The two modes conflict incrementally at times) and can you change how the measurement read out as straight ft/inches vs ft/decimals . In other words I want it to read 4' 6" vs 4.5 . I don't like doing the math conversions when it reads 4.9 to understand it's actually 4'11".. hoping you can help me know how to change that
The manual says to simultaneously press and hold both the plus and minus buttons for 2 seconds. This switches it to the next unit display mode. I don't have one (saw this as part of my research) but I figured I'd better find out because you're right; decimal inches suck. So I was happy to discover that the D2 does indeed allow for a 1/32" (or other fractional) readout. Here's a link to the manual at the Leica site: shop.leica-geosystems.com/sites/default/files/2021-11/Leica_DistoD2_UM_en.pdf Hope this helps.
I haven't checked to see if you've done any updates from this video which shows as 2 years old but here's my input. I would take a bet that many lasers use the same circuitry but have fancier cases and buttons on the outside. Maybe brighter laser dots. I bought a laser about 3 years ago and the company for the name of the unit is AceGmet... Or something like that It may be made now by a company called Mileseed. That unit is nearly identical to the one I have. For the last two years I've been measuring homes for floor covering, carpet lvp and wood flooring. I like to be accurate and when I visit a home, actually make a drawing of the home's layout to bring back for the store. It's not architect quality but I do use a scale to measure it accurately. By having an actual drawing, the flooring store owner can talk with the homeowner about the different aspects of their home such as were to place transitions or discuss different flooring options in different rooms. Anyhow I bought a $37 laser measuring device for kicks and giggles. I was not doing measuring for the store at this time. However once I started doing measures, I started using my laser measuring tool. I'd make a measurement with my tape measure and then I'd back check it with this cheap laser. One has to do this many, many times to trust that little red dot 23 ft 7 and 5/16 inches away. It's hard to trust that red dot until you back check dozens and dozens of times with your tape measure. Once you've gained confidence ......you won't want to go back to using a tape measure. 😁 The shop asked me to go measure an accountant's office. I stopped by the day before to look the place over and to decide how I was going to draw this one up. It was 115 ft by 55 ft and there were 19 offices around the perimeter of the building plus the reception area plus the hallways, conference room etc...... This wasn't going to be a 30 minute job. Some of the distances on this job were quite long so I asked the shop owner to bring his Leica laser so that I could use it and compare it with my cheap one. I believe his Leica cost over $800 when it was new. My first test was from a bookshelf at one end of the hallway. I placed it against the wall on a shelf and aimed it down the hallway. It was 74 ft 4 and 13/16 inches to a far wall. Next, I placed my $37 laser on the shelf, in the exact same spot and it measured 74 ft 4 and 13/16 inches also. The only thing I don't like about the Leica is that you have to plug it into recharge it. With my cheap one, you just slap in 2 new AA batteries and you're good to go. The Leica of course has a brighter screen. It also has a camera, bluetooth, and you can enter all your measurements into a computer and it will draw out the floor plan for you. I'm sure that program is not cheap. Too the many people out there, especially carpenters, you can't live without one of these snazzy little devices. The only drawback on virtually every device made is that they put the button on the face. I think it would be much easier to use if they put it on the side where you would rest your thumb. I love your content. I forgot to mention my cheap laser also does square foot triangles cubic feet in case you want to fill your house with water 😁
@@TheFunnyCarpenter I love using it. I had to take measurements the insides of all my windows for new blinds. Regardless what digital device I used, I loved how quick and accurate the process was. Bosch screen and characters are very small and hard to read and the backlight turns off way too quickly. Atlas Tools sells them. I bought mine off Amazon.ca. I put a link in the description. I got mine for 189, they go on sale sometimes. Depending on what you use it for the cheaper Bosch units might work as well.
The Funny Carpenter Thanks, we don’t have an atlas tools in the Okanogan. I’m really determined to get the best accuracy if I get one of these and my Leica range finders are the best I’ve used so I’m brand loyal lol.
The Funny Carpenter apparently Leica actually invented this technology, I didn’t know that. They also license less accurate versions to Bosch and others.
I just held a tape for somebody measuring a really long building. I was thinking there must be a more Accurate and quicker and safer way to do this, There is. 😂😊
@@TheFunnyCarpenter shame it doesn't take much more common AAs! I'm getting it anyway - came across a barely used one for just $20 Australian dollars. 🤣
Hi, Can I use this laser to measure distance from my position on ground to rooftop or to the top of a mast or pole? I get the sense my use case is not supported - that these devices only work when beam is perpendicular to surface at distance. If so they are worthless to me. Thanks, John
I dont know about the Leica, but the Hilti PD range has a viewfinder on the side that allows you to see where the laser is pointed without having to see the dot. They also have a function where you can buy a monopod, screw it into the back, and the laser will take the monopod length into account when you measure in line with the monopod. This allows you to be standing upright when you look through the viewfinder instead of laying on the ground when you take the measurement.
Thanks, great review. Have you tried downloading the free Disto Plan app for your phone or tablet? You can create scaled drawings from the measurements as the D2 is Bluetooth enabled, and then the plan can be emailed immediately. Measure, Document, Communicate- all very simple. All the best.

Very handy for kitchen designers!
if you are taking a measurement down a manhole or something on a bit of an angle will it calculate the tilt and give you the vertical distance?

Ric Liang awesome Ric. I opted for the slightly more accurate one so I could feel a little safer measuring a 400$ piece of cabinet crown:)

Hey man! I’ve been doing a tun off base and crown lately do u think I should invest in this? And that it’s accurate enough for it?
I’d say for long runs it’s just as accurate as a tape measure. For paint grade stuff if you use it properly it is more than accurate enough.
Awesome video!
How to calibratte the leica disto D2
Will it work outside in bright sun?
It will work but will be difficult to really see where the laser is pointing…so it’s use is limited.
How does it do outside in the sunlight?
It’s not too bad early morning but it does get hard to see the laser dot in brighter sun.

Quick tip. Photo the guide with your smart phone then you will always have a copy to hand.
