- Laser Tape Measures: General Tools, Toolman, Meterk, Zekbean, Mileseey, TickTockTools, BeiXun, eTape, Lexivon, Hyggein, DTAPE, Prexiso, and Koiss. A regular Stanley Fatmax tape measure was used to compare the physical tape measure features against the laser tape measures. Most of the brands have both a physical tape measure and a laser. Laser testing includes: outdoor accuracy, ease of reading digital display in bright, outdoor conditions, durability when exposed to vibration, dust and water. Laser testing also included indoor accuracy testing. Physical tape measure tested for reach or “standout”, abrasion resistance, accuracy, and retraction speed after exposure to dust. @@ProjectFarm Salt is corrosive to aluminum (airplanes), so airports generally use Sodium Acetate. That would be cool to see a comparison.
Have to consider the effects on concrete too ... salt ruins sidewalks.

3:26 That's actually a plus for me. Once a built-in battery is done, it's either impossible or almost so to replace it. With AAA cells, I can just chuck my own rechargeables in and be done.

And the cheaper the tool, the less likely it will have a quality battery. I've seen "Chinesium" tools/devices with non-replaceable batteries that recharged maybe 10 times before their battery died permanently, rendering the device useless.
Agreed, plus it's no big deal to keep some extra batteries in the tool box. Waiting around for it to charge when you're on a job is no good.
Better yet, no battery. Fatmax is hands down the best tape measure.
I can understand owning a laser tape for rough estimates, for example, buying materials. Still, there’s risk unless you’re a large outfit who can use additional supplies.
Then again, I’ve seen/listened to a lot of people reading a tape wrong.
you do realise that people have been pulling apart tools for 18650s for years now for vapes.
I'm an electrician and have been using a 25' Fatmax since they were introduced. I have considered buying a hybrid but, based on what you've shown, I think I'll stick to it.

If Stanly built a hybrid Fatmax, I'm sure it would be a massive success. For now, if you need a laser distance finder, just keep a second device that is dedicated to it.
@@Tomd4850 For home users maybe. For tradesperson tapes fall off ladders or lifts, forgotten in the ceiling or outside, and loaned to 200lb gorillas. I want something that I can replace for $10, not $50.

Want one you can give to employees for cheap? I've been using a Roebuck 231695 workshop that I was given 16 years ago on my first job cutting steel for welders. It still works fine today after a year of that job and 15 years of home use. They are £2.50 each and 5m length. Survived a fair few knocks and a tumble in a washing machine in a pocket.

As a fellow glasses wearer, I'm sure you've been frustrated by glasses fog! I've tried a bunch of anti-fog sprays, wipes, and other products but it's hard to find one that works. Maybe you could do a comparison?

@@TJ4774 i bought some of the rain-x stuff for my ranger during the winter (arizona, no ac or heat) andi only had to apply it once and it worked perfectly from like mid december to now. not sure about other brands but the rain-x brand worked perfectly for me
Agreed. They all claim the be anti-fog, but I have yet to find one that even REMOTELY resists fog.
This channel never fails. Been using it to inform my tool buying for the past two years, not one dud. Would love to see a video on hand held pruning shears/clippers. Can never seem to find ones that last more than a season without getting dull, bent, and wobbly.

Laser Leveler test would be nice to see in the future. Used a Bosch brand one to align the life kit on my jeep and it made it so much easier.

Great test. After seeing the accuracy results and the point of measurement, front or back, I'll pass on these. I use a Bosch laser measure, it's very accurate and I have no loss of confidence when measuring for trim work, particularly crown molding. The downside is reading in outdoor sunlight, kinda sketchy at times but that's not unusual for red lasers.

Would really really love to see you do chisels. The price range is massive, and there is really no way to know just how much better the steel is from different sets. I hate having to just rely on price to know how good certain chisels might be.

I started off in an ironmongers (hardware) store back in the early 1970's. All I can say at the end of my working life, is I am amazed at what is out there nowadays. Buy the best you can afford from the offset, upgrade when you can and never blame your tools!

I think my favorite aspect of your reviews might be the readiness which you admit your testing procedures might have affected results. To be honest. I think very few people mean these hybrid laser tapes when they talk about their "laser measurer". Many of us use point and click lasers and have little use for these

These laser tapes have always seemed like a gimmick to me. I work construction on new construction homes. Never ever have I seen anyone using one of these. I think the people that buy them don't ever use them and they collect dust 🤣

I use laser tapes when I need a global idea of the size of a room and the size of the stuff in it, it’s quick and easy for that. But I wouldn’t trust it for exact measurements.
A dedicated laser measure, especially from a market leader like Bosch, is hopefully going to be more accurate than these add-on devices. Unfortunately he didn't add one as part of the testing as a control like the FatMax.

@@mlindholm These units are very different from the specialized laser rangefinders, the old Leica Disto A5 laser rangefinder I have can measure out to 650 feet, with an accuracy of 1/3", and within 1.5mm to 90 feet.

The 12"+ errors on these hybrid units make them more like simple estimators than rangefinders. The pricing is in an entirely different category, so that might just be all that could be reasonably expected.

Awesome video..I have a fluke and Bosch laser tape it's just a laser measuring device but extremely accurate but costly..my fluke goes around 360 ft at 1/16"accuracy very impressive..again great reviews and thanks for your time and effort you put in to your videos

I used to have the bosch also and loved it! I used it to quickly figure out the square footage of a room for measuring hardwood flooring...

@@cpufrost My bosch is super accurate but the fluke is way better.. On accuracy and range I have not tried the brand new ones from Bosch So maybe they got better the old ones were great
@@shakeeshakee9457 I have an older Bosch and one of the newer ones with 400' range. The new one is faster and works great even outside. Fluke makes good stuff, I have a model 77-1 DMM from 1984 that still works today!

Absolutely! Yes! A comparison of laser distance measurement devices. There are a number out there available in the $250+/- price range by Leica, Milwaukee, Bosch, Dewalt and others. Lots of features besides just distance measurements with these devices. It would be very interesting, helpful and valuable!
I’ve experienced a couple so far and noticed a big difference in performance in well lit environment and in day light. I’d be interested to see which brand performs the best in these conditions. Also features like keeping the back light on longer for working in low light conditions as well. Really need to have representation in at least two price tiers if not three.

Good review and I think you saved me money as I'm not really convinced these things are ready for any sort of serious outdoor use. Might be fun to have figured out what killed the Meterk after the ammo can, the beating it took or the sand between contacts.

yeah, none really performed that well. the most accurate didn't survive. the ones that survived the punishment were pretty inaccurate.

Love your videos! I've used your videos several time when purchasing different things you've reviewed. Now I'm in the market for a self leveling laser after reading reviews and looking at different brands I've noticed complaints about many having dim vertical lines. 'Force to remove tape from belt clip' - I never would have thought to test this, but this has usually been the make or break for which tape I use when working on projects where I'll be carrying the tape for extended periods. Another awesome review video.

Its p easy if you grew up with it. Especially given that many of the measurements approximately correspond to body parts
Came here to post basically this. My brain was melting by the middle of the vid. I don't think there's another video on youtube where 15 16ths inches has ever been said so many times.
I do all my projects around the house in metric units. Imperial fractions are a pain in the neck.
I live in the US but don't work in the trades. I think the way we do fractional inches is insane. There is nothing much wrong with using thousandths of an inch, and I wouldn't mind if tape measures were marked down to the nearest 10th of an inch (you can eyeball the rest). But the power of two fractions are just nuts. Anyway, I finally just bought a metric tape measure and use it whenever possible. It is pure metric (no inches on it). That way I can use both sides of the tape, whichever is more convenient.
Whenever I am getting anything from a hardware store I always watch project farm before buying! You are the best!

Been waiting for this one, thank you Todd! Although my biggest concern on the laser tape is toughness, "Survived Fall, Survived Ran Over" which you didn't test, because my tape falls now and then. And not that I ever ran over my tape but it could happen...

To be fair, I'm betting the damage done to the electronics of some of these tapes was caused more by the vibration than the sand ingress. My point being, use the sand test as a bit of a proxy for drop survival.
Interesting, but I have 4-5 regular tape measures without much need for the laser function. I've seen contractors use their iPhone for that, so I'd have to learn how to use it, how to hold it (like against a wall), rest or sit it for best accuracy, etc. But I did enjoy watching your procedures and test rigs. Your ingenuity, enthusiasm and dedication are fantastic! Thanks for everything you do for us! You're the man.

Very good video and testing. I personally prefer the laser only, for long distances. Currently I am using the Bosch GLM 50-27 CG green laser rangefinder and is very accurate and robust. And is also IP 68 rated. The green laser is more visible outdoors.
This is good to hear. I have one of the older red laser Bosches and it works great, but I've seen their claim that the green laser is easier to see. In your opinion, is it worth upgrading just for that, or is the difference minor?
@@seanharding Hello, I also have the previous model with a red laser, glm50 c. Indoor both are working fine. Outside the green laser is more visible, but is not the only reason for me to upgrade. The new model can be used with alkaline batteries, or with an easy-to-use li-ion battery pack, that was part of the package. The display is improved, is more visible outdoors. You also can change the language of the menu, and the tool have a vibration haptic feedback when you take measurement. In some cases the tool has a practical belt clip in the package. It is bigger than the previous version, but is very solid. The contrast of the display is adjustable. If you are working outside on a construction site, then I recommend this tool, considering all the features, not only the laser color.

Do you need to see the laser on a measuring device?
@@Eric-dr5bj Definitely, because anything over a few meters you don't know exactly what you are pointing at, it's very easy to be off by quite a bit unless you are pointing at a large flat surface.
More important to me:
1] How visible is the spotting dot at full claimed distance?
2] How many failed tape measures can be reset by removing the battery and re-installing it?
3] How many can you remove the belt clip, without it failing or falling apart inside?
4] How many give you a digital readout when using the tape?
5] How hard is it to read the display the readout in sunlight, if you block the sun with your hand?
6?] If you point the laser return at the sun, does it read infinity, and lock up forever?
7] Are you looking for someone to repair the broken ones, in exchange for the price of shipping?
8] Do any of them have a warranty?
9] Can you see how many still work after falling from the top of an 8' ladder onto concrete?

I just bought a LASER level for a really big project and then seeing your videos under my suggested list, I come to find out there are such things as LASER Tape Measures?! I loved the opening of your video where you stated that you haven't really used them either. You have a lot of fun pitting different manufactures products against each other and it really shows in your videos which is what makes them so enjoyable to watch plus you are helping out the every-man/woman. Thank you for the 10th time I think by now haha.

Nice test! For the tapes that measure from the leading edge, do each of those units have a fixed length for measuring wall to wall? Like +3" to the readout distance?
In well over 20 years of using a tape in production environments, I've never had one get pulled or pushed straight up off of my belt (although I usually use my pocket instead).
What *has* happened was it getting pulled away from my body, essentially opening up the belt clip. I'd love to see the strength of the clips tested in future videos.
That seems much more likely than someone hanging upside-down with a weight hanging off the tape.

@@ProjectFarm Speaking of electrical tests, WAGO's too, and the knockoff wagos. Run a short with a welder through them and see which ones survive the abuse! :)

@@ProjectFarm my only experience with laser measurement was when my dad tried to convince me a 5 foot table was 10 feet long. It needed some calibration haha.
I’m really glad to see that many of them have both metric and imperial markings. It’s frustrating that so many of the measuring tapes in the big home improvement stores are missing metric.

When I pick up a tape with metric on it I drop it and find another.
A measuring tape should only have one or the other, unless the bottom side is used for the other. It's extremely frustrating to not be able to use both side of the blade as a reference point for accurate measures when tapes include both on the top side. I have stopped using all of my "dual" measuring tapes and got myself a dedicated metric tape instead to go along with my dedicated imperial ones.

Have you ever done a roundup vid on plunge saws? I'm curious how cordless plunge saws of brands like Festool, Makita and DeWalt would measure up against eachother. Anyway, superb job on comparing and testing these tools for us, you're doing gods work!

I always liked using my old Lufkin tape measure to find the center of sheet metals sheets because it seemed to be so accurate! it was shocking how close the material always was for years too! I do not remember where we were getting the sheets from... I still love the FatMax tape measures! I wish they had the laser!
I have an old school Lufkin that my late uncle bought for me. He was a builder, and always said this was his favorite because it always worked accurately. It isn't flashy, but it's durable and still works flawlessly.

That's because the old Lufkins were proudly Made in the USA! After the Crescent takeover of Lufkin, the first thing they did was shut down the US factory, and move production to China.

Agh man, I wished I would have know. This was happening. I use my Hilti laser tape every day (I’ve had it for 15 years). My Hilti laser tape may be my favorite tool I’ve ever owned. (I also paid $300 for it 15 years ago).
Edit: my Hilti is laser only.

Love your stuff, though I have to say the most important test (laser accuracy) really should have been a distance within range of all the products. No idea how accurate the expensive one is!

I agree - and I feel like the accuracy should have been the most highly weighted category in this case. If you're not going to use the laser - you'd just get a regular tape measure. If you're going to use the laser, most likely it being accurate is the absolute most important thing.

I worked in masonry for a little over a year. I bought a Dtape tape measure and it was able to impress a few guys on the job. It came in handy when measuring upward elevations pretty accurately.

Excellent testing , as always! I would like to suggest testing levels and laser levels. Those used to be pretty reliable, but I've bought several over the past couple of years that were problematic.
