When I got my first Beetle, the metal under the door, the part that the running boards bolts to, was completely rotted on both sides. I walked right into the VW dealership's parts department and they had replacement panels in stock! That tells you how long ago that was! I paid $15 at the junkyard for a dual port 1600 to replace the 40 horse it came with, and all it needed was new pushrod tubes. I got a set of modern seats at the same junkyard for cheap, along with some better running boards and rust free rear fenders. I think all total I had $600 in the car, including the aftermarket stereo. I brought my second kid home from the hospital when he was born in it. I really miss those days when Bugs were plentiful and cheap.
Yeah the $500 bug days are pretty much gone, but you can still score a relatively cheap car if you keep an eye out, especially if you don't mind a Super. I have actually had great luck on Marketplace for used parts so far, with patience but, correctly restoring one new is ridiculously expensive. Thanks for watching!
I had a 68 that my dad and i restored from the ground up. New everything from seats to headliner to having it repainted the original color. My dad fixed some of the places that needed fixed which wasn’t much. The engine was left as it was and we rebuilt the starter. I loved when we started it up. Had a 73 semi automatic that was my daily drive each to school. Great car i regret selling them but i was young and needed the money to pay for college. But like watching others recusing them and restoring them.
I also did my car with a Flux core welder the thing is if you do it right and drill out the spot welds that hold those panels together you will mostly be doing spot welds. I had no problem once I got my settings right and fine adjusted on my welder.
56:56 Best way to drop your front end 2 inches is with drop spindles. they don't affect your steering geometry or upset the handling and its easier than welding adjusters into your beam.
Frankly, last time I looked I didn't see king pin dropped spindles, so thanks for reminding me! I will look into that for sure as I need to do some suspension work up there anyway 😙💨
Hey just put my 65 back together. I can see you have some rust. My advise if you do pans and heater channels, use Wolfsburg west pans and classic fab heater channels. Classic fab also does firewall repair panels for the front firewall.

Thanks! I will take that in account when I start shopping the parts...
