Props for sticking with the mechanical fuel pump. Too many people swap to an electric fuel pump which is unnecessary. Whenever a carburetted VW shows up here with an electric pump, it gets swapped back to a mechanical pump.
Take note if you havent worked on VW solex carbs . The idle screw is only for the choke and needs to be not touching at warm idle. The idle is totally controlled from the air and fuel mixture screws. If you set the idle screw ( attached to the arm ) like any other carb , it will bypass the proper idle function. dont throw away that old fuel pump. Lots of guys like to rebuild those rather than buy new ones.

Rebuild that fuel pump. It is better than the new one.
You will probable find that the ignition will work with some WD40 and a bit of jiggling
