@@justiis4672 That's because aside from "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" and "Cinnamon Girl", every one of their songs clock in anywhere between 6 and 13 minutes long, lol🤣. American radio will not play songs over 4 and a half minutes (unless someone's rail has been greased) so they forced the band's hand. In fact, when it came to radio edits, Peter made Josh do them, and refused to even listen to them before sending them out.

This was a very tongue-in-cheek jab at goth sub-culture. With the harpsichord, and, the little nod to the Addams Family theme. Peter Steele was an intelligent guy, who had a very dry sense of humor, and, really loved "stirring the pot". You could never tell whether Peter Steele was being serious, or, not.

In particular, itwas about his ex, who was a goth girl. She was so conceded/self obsessed she once had him hold a mirror while they were getting intimate so she could look at herself while they were in the act. Black #1 was the color hair dye she used.

The good thing about Type-O-Negative is, that they don't take themselves too serious.
I mean, you can read the lyrics to this song as making fun of gothic chicks being lifeless, right? LOL.
Other great fun songs: "I don't wanna be me" or "My girlfriend's girlfriend". Their videos are pretty hilarious, too.
For a more serious title, try "Love you to death", which has a very surprising turn in the end, with an emotional openness, that you would never expect in a dark romantic love song.
I loved them. Peter Steel was iconic, a tall, self-ironic, bipolar bass guy ... that were quite some similarities to myself. I bought my first boutique bass, because I heard that he played it in the studio at an album I absolutely adored. (It was a Bogart bass from 1994, I ordered the day the first glossy catalog came, and had one of the first hundred, if not fifty, without serial)
Interestingly, for the typical goth wave people of that time, Type-O-Negative was too ironic and pathetic, and they did not like the 60's references, probably. On the other hand, people of the harder rock and metal genres really liked the originality, that was in the ironic cliché game. Plus - the songwriting, lyrics and live skills were pretty solid and really entertaining...
Their discography is really worth listening to. They were a phenomenon.
Thanks for your reaction, I love your honest way of telling that it is full of clichés, but at the same time one could see, that you enjoyed discovering them while listening. All they did was done with intention and high entertainment factor.
Have a great weekend, my Scottish dudette. These were some nice 2 last videos!
    Highly appreciated!
    Best regards!

Typo-O's sound evolved over their career but remained unmistakably their brand. You should check out more of their material for two reasons. One, you may see that they are much more that what one song shows, two, you may discover that this particular song was one of the many products of their bizarre sense of humor. it's part of a much bigger picture.
To say that they never took themselves too seriously is an understatement. Everything was open for a laugh, nothing was sacred. They were so irreverent so unpredictable, and attacked their joking aspects of their music so artfully that no one could really be sure what the band felt, believed, liked, or disliked. You could never get a serious answer in interviews, and Peter in particular was always three steps ahead of the interviewer like a cat playing with a mouse. It's even questionable if they even thought they were good (they were), or if they even liked having fans (they did).
Sarcastic, sardonic, and snarky, it was hard to know what was schtick and what was from the heart. One could say it was theatrics. or even one big social experiment. Who knows what they really had in mind the whole time, but nevertheless the result was some really, really great music, and a lot of scowling goths cracking smiles and laughing at the world and even themselves.
"Don't mistake lack of talent for genius." on the surface this Peter Steel quote is about Typo O Negative. I don't believe that it could be further from the truth.

@brycephiilips2716 As another long time Type O fan I was about to jump to their defence and comment about the knowingly tongue-inch-cheek nature of their music that at the same time often tackled very serious subjects... but I think you perfectly summed it up. Definitely a mistake to write them off as one-hit-wonders/one-trick-ponies - they made their music their way, had and still have a fanatical following (not just comprised on teenage girls wearing chokers 🤣🤣- though there were a fair few of those) and had a long run, only sadly curtailed by Pete Steele's death.

Really glad you discovered this kickass Gothic metal band. Peter had a helluva bass-baritone voice. He was also 6’ 8” so he never exactly got picked on. Unfortunately he did deal with real depression and probably never overcame that, but he contributed awesome metal to the world of music. Wrote a lot of killer heavy tunes. Type O has a big catalogue of great tracks; their rabbit hole is really recommended. Heavy, doomy, dark, just one of metal’s finest groups in my book. And music in general is definitely excellent therapy.

Pete definitely knew The Ladies were into it. when you're 6'7" and look like Sexy Dracula, you might as well run with it. Black No. 1 is an anthemic crowd favorite, in part because of how simple it is, but i don't know that i'd call it pandering, just because campy psychedelic goth metal was their whole aesthetic. it's more of a mission statement. this is also the video edit, the full song is like 11 minutes long.
they have lots of more serious songs (World Coming Down is an extremely depressing album), but Type O Negative did a good job of balancing darkness and humor. My Girlfriend's Girlfriend is one of my favorites of theirs. Love You To Death is another classic. October Rust as a whole is a fantastic album, anything off of it is worth checking out. if you're into Goth stuff, you will enjoy pretty much everything they did.

But hey, they had quite different types of songs in their repertoire, from punk attitude to 60s gogo, mixed with a metal that was sounding quite unique at its time. Kenny (Guitar) sings the high parts. Pete stays in the low end, unless he's screaming vocals. Both he and Kenny scream vocals as well as sing. A lot of people think that Pete was the only singer cause he and Kenny sound so much a like in their vocals even though Kenny stays on the high end Pete stays in the low. All Peter wanted according to an interview with Kenny I watched last week was to play Beatles songs that sounded like Black Sabbath and that's how they created the sound for TON.

    • @ronin4713
      @ronin4713 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

For the most part, Kenny did the high end stuff on stage so Pete wouldn't burn out his vioce, doing it night after night on tour. In the studio, it was a different story. Pete did most all of the vocals, except for a few rare exceptions. You are right though... when Pete is screaming in that higher register, he and Kenny do sound very similar, and it can be hard to pinpoint who's doing what parts.

I love Type O. They have described themselves as The Drab Four. As others have said they never took themselves overly seriously, and the entire album Bloody Kisses is glorious, especially their cover of Seals and Croft's Summer Breeze. The album version of this song is far better, but it was too long for radio, so the label butchered it for the version here. There is at least one entire verse cut out of this version, not to mention some incredible music.
Peter Steele was a wonderful human from all accounts I've heard. I never got to see them perform live, and my elderly gothic heart is saddened by that.

As pointed out, the highs aren't Peter...its the guitarist Kenny Hickey. Type O Negative actually started life as a somewhat "hardcore band". Their first album, Slow, Deep, and Hard is a direct reaction to a broken heart for Peter...its accusatory, painful, mysoginistic (with titles like "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity (I Know You're Fucking Someone Else)". The songs are bombastic and Pete does a lot of screaming. They have always trolled their fans, so much so that their second release, a live affair titled, "The Origin of the Feces", whose original cover art was a very up close shot of Pete's actual anus, was not actually live at all. It was somewhere around this time that, supposedly, Peter and Josh Silver began discussing a different direction for the band...a slower, more gothic approach, to absolutely attract goth girls, their money and their devotion. Bloody Kisses was released in '93 and it was obvious almost immediately that they had hit on something. Erotic goth began to become their hallmark, the sexuality peaking with Steele's centerfold in Playgirl Magazine in '95. Let's say of that that you were firstly, very astute in noticing Pete's huge hands. And second, lets say that the 6'8" Mr. Steele's genital region is oversized, even for him. As time went on, their sound really didn't change much, for example, all of their songs, save one, are in b standard tuning. By the time the alcoholism and addiction had caught up with Pete, he was a shell of his former self, but continued to give everything he could to the band. I met Peter and Kenny after a concert in Cincinnati wondering around the outside of the arena while Queensryche played. We talked for probably ten minutes and they both were just wonderful. So, finally, yes they were pandering to goth fans, and yes, they absolutely purposely wrote stripper music, but that doesn't mean that they didn't love the music they made and it doesn't devalue their catalog. I loved Type O enough to get their logo tattooed on my forearm... I've got some questionable tats, that ain't one of them...if you try another Type O song, make it Wolf Moon, but warning, you'll want to read up about the lyrics first....😊

"He has giant hands." He had a giant something else too. Every goth chick I went to high school with somehow procured copies of that Playgirl Mag.
I saw them and Fear Factory when I was 12 back in like 1997 on their October Rust tour, which has still got to be one of my favorite albums ever. Burton C. Bell (ex-Vocalist for Fear Factory) saw security being rough with some guys out in the audience, like that didn't want us moshing or crowd surfing and started kicking peoples ass. Burt went full blown antiauthoritarian on stage and security literally had to hide in the back. They are about the stop the show, we were hearing there were police outside and this is right after they had tear gassed a Deicide show and they're telling us we all need to calm down etc etc.
Next thing we know a couple roadies bring a chair, a side table, a stand up bass and a bottle of red wine out on the stage. A few minutes later all 6'8" of Peter Steele walks out on stage, takes a pull of wine, sits down and starts playing Beatles covers... REALLY slow. Everyone mellowed out, it was amazing and then they played a killer set. Still one of my favorite shows I've ever seen.

I was backstage to meet a promotor and happened to be standing next to Pete just before they walked out on stage. I told him, "oh, this what it looks like before you go on stage". Peter Steele was a giant of a man and one of the few people who have ever been able to play an upright bass as if it was just a regular bass guitar. Always wanted to see them live but sadly never got the chance. I remember driving home to western PA from NJ one night probably in 2002, maybe 2003, and as I was driving through Philly, they had Peter Steele on the radio for an interview. Was great to listen to for the little bit I stayed in range of the radio towers.

I loved Type-O and was in my teenage years through my 20's when they were really popular. I'm from New York and growing up in the New York Hardcore scene and being in bands I got to know the members and their music. They're ALL really good dudes and it sucks Peter Steele isn't with us anymore. But man Peter made it weird for us dudes after he appeared in f**king naked in Playgril magazine in 1995 it seemed like EVERY girl out had seen it and talked about it while us dudes were doing everything possible to avoid the pictures because we all knew Pete it would make it really awkward hanging out with him haha
But anyone who's a fan of Type-O Negative should check out Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly of Type-O Negative's band Silvertomb. My boys Joseph James ex Agnostic Front/INHUMAN and Hank Hell ex INHUMAN are also in the band and they're really freaking good!
ALSO Justin Hawkins of the band Darkness has a TH-cam channel called "Justin Hawkins Rides Again and he does Reactions and he's pretty freaking hilarious and it's something you should definitely check out.

Type O Negative were having a good time doing what they enjoyed and weren't trying to conquer the music world. They were humble and hard working. I appreciate what they contributed.
Was it niche? Certainly. Do I prefer that to Taylor Swift trying to baby bird the world with baby food? Yes again. To each their own of course. As long as you're not hurting anyone else: go nuts.

I agree with what was said about "medicine for the mind". Before I went legally blinr, I used to treat anger with videogames like Doom or Quake. I can't do that any more because my reaction time plummeted. So I went back to music. An hour of KISS, Motorhead or Twisted Sister drains out the negativity and leaves plenty of room for motivation.

I watch your videos because you're funny, honest, unfiltered and unafraid to try new things.
I will be 59 at the end of next May. UT warms my heart to know that someone significantly younger than me is looking at this genre with fresh eyes, and not dismissing it as "my Dad's music". Yes, I was 12 when I first bout an 8 track of KISS and seriously got into them, but I'm always finding bits of new stuff (Orden Ogan) and old stuff (Judas Priest, Kix, etc) to try to at least understand.
Some bands (Tool, Meshuggah, Slipknot) are too weird for me. That's okay, they have their audience. I'm not the Music Police. I'm a fan, and I support the music that builds me up. And the reactors who build me up... Like you :)
Peace be with you, Melissa. I hope this channel continues for a good long while.
PS: Try "Heavy Chains" by Loudness :)

I love Typo-Negative and I think this song is an anthem to that tongue in cheek humour, enjoying the ironic fun of being a goth. It captures the imagery and feel so well and adds the knowing grin and a raised eyebrow on a genre that from the outside looks so pretentious and dower but to those within is about enjoying great music and taking seriously dressing as you like.

If you, really, want the 'masturbatory stuff,' listen to their song Christian Woman. It, really, is a lot of fun; and while we're discussing 'masturbation,' while, yes, I do agree that Metal Music can be cathartic, don't masturbate to anything faster than Slayer; it doesn't go well!
As for Type-O, I do enjoy some of their stuff; but, I do find them, somewhat, musically boring. What isn't boring is when Mr. Peter Steele posed for Playgirl (you can thank me later). As for his hands, yes, they're big, because hes 6' 8".
Now, if you want some, really, good, Gothic Metal (Gothic Symphonic Metal, actually), BlackBriar will be your new toy-of-pleasure. Arms of The Ocean, Crimson Faces, My Soul's Demise, The Seance are great songs with which to start.
    A great review!

Hey Melisa! This band was a HUGE part of the 90s for my wife and I. This song is probably their most famous, and so is the entry point for most people, but I do NOT think it's their best work. They've got so much more to offer - "Love You to Death", "Everyone I Love is Dead" (ok, there seems to be a theme, there), but also the funny "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" and their cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" (my wife's theme song, basically). Great job and Rock On! 🤘😎👍

Type O is quite the rabbit hole. Self-depreciating, the "drab four" are infamous for writing gothy toe tappers like Black #1 but also lengthy epics you can find on my favorite Type O album, October Rust. Peter's voice is crazy on that one, an the song writing is insanely good.
I saw them in Cincinnati Ohio years ago, and Peter infamously said, jokingly, "This next song sounds like sh*t, because I wrote it on the toilet."

Type o Negative are very unique band. They have a lot of dark humor and sarcasm in their lyrics...the guys were all genius musicians and had a lot of influence in the industry but they never took themselves seriously...in the back on their Bloody Kisses album they had written "Don't mistake the lack of talent for genius" lmao. Another big fan favorite I recommend is "To Late: Frozen". I'd list a couple off of October Rust, but looking at the other comments here, that album is well covered, lol

I've been a fan of Type-O since I first heard one of their songs ('Wolf Moon', if you're interested) on a Metal Hammer cover CD in 1996 (f**k me sideways, I'm old), and have loved them ever since. There's a ridiculous amount of humour in their songs, but it's all wrapped around this steamy gothic sensibility that few other bands have ever managed to pull off as well as Type-O did. Yes, I just used the word 'steamy' and the phrase 'pull off' in the same sentence, which harks back to your comment about this song being masturbatory aid for 15 year old girls with chokers, right?
ANYWAY, I'm glad you enjoyed them - I would heartily recommend listening to their 'October Rust' album, as it's chock-foo of crackin' songs like this one.
