I'm glad you've decided to give Type-O another listen. Not only was Peter a good bass singer, a lot of the songs he wrote had hints if not blatant levels of pitch black humor which I definitely appreciated, even if a lot of people I knew didn't. He was 6"8" and about as broad as he was tall, so I suspect that he was also gifted with larger vocal cords.

    • @SnapesHoney2800

Yeah, Peter was a Big guy so he naturally had a low and larger larynx. Even his normal speaking voice was bass.
And on stage his build gave him this god like presence even though he had stage fright. When he was ON it was magic. Smaller venues were where he excelled.
I had the pleasure of seeing Type O Negative at the Palace in Louisville Kentucky.
It is larger than a nightclub but smaller and more intimate than an arena.
He was on that night. I had never heard of them before that night and I left the show in Love with his voice and their sound.
When I got October Rust they sounded exactly like the CD. I was hooked.
      He is SO terribly missed.😢

He started his illustrious career with the great Crossover Metal-Hardcore band, Carnivore. They were a fixture at legendary Brooklyn music venue, L'Amour's. Peter was an amazing songwriter & bassist. 05:20 "It's about the size of the dog" might be the most accurate description of why Pete was unique. Not just very tall, but a big dude, like a wrestler. Wide shoulders, long neck, big head and mouth. He was a human contrabass. I mean, he could hang one around his freakin shoulders and play it like a bass guitar!
Tragic loss for the metal community, then and still now. Saw them several times on festivals and house shows. Awesome memories, TON on a stage like this, in the dark, was just magical.

I'm glad you brought up his stage fright and anxiety. He hated playing live and early on had to be convinced to go on tour. He basically came to view it as a necessary evil as part of being in a successful band. He would have been perfectly happy just living in his parent's basement and making album after album there without having to play live. It's said in his biography that often times they wouldn't even bother doing a sound check. I was lucky enough to be a fan of theirs when they were still active and got to see them play live a few times. I have to say, despite all of what I just said I never would have guessed any of it at the time. They always sounded great when I saw them. Fun fact about Peter Steele; he posed for Playgirl, for the female attention.
He just forgot that most females aren't so visually inclined as males, and homosexuals are male. So after the first shock of being a sex symbol for the gays, he laughed at it, and saw it as a complement when men "offered" themselves to him.

Excellent choice for your wolf theme. In fact, to me it just might be essential. Though I’m biased as a big fan of the band. What you said about the lowest voices possibly having the most range was similar to a thought I once had. Basically, your register is already at the bottom. So maybe there’s a chance to be able to cover all the space above it. At any rate, this nails the wolf theme and also fits the month of October quite nicely.

I love how so much of his style (which is very unique), was deliberately just an F-you to critics.
"You need to drops your "R"s at the end of your words, a hard R is an ugly sound that doesn't project as well"
So he rolls his Rs very blatantly, in a loud and overly dramatic fashion.
"You need to drop your accent and annunciate better"
He doubles down on the Brooklyn accent and even turns it into a joke in his music.
Any time an "expert" told him what to do, he did the exact opposite.
FYI, Kenny for Type-O (who did a lot of backup vocals) has a new project, "EYE AM". Worth a listen, he sounds a lot like Chris Cornell in that, but heavier.

i saw Type O five or six times and feel really lucky about that. But the last couple times, Peter wasn't doing well. It was clear his depression was overtaking him. The last time, he went through several bottles of wine on stage and ran offstage a couple times to throw up (which he told the audience). That was only a few months before he died.
This selection seems to be on the cusp before that tragic downhill slide. So yeah, even though it's still impressive, it's not even close to his best.

He was sober for nearly 9 months prior to his passing so you have your time line confused and do him a disservice by the comment.

I have a suggestion for you to check out. A band called First to Eleven doing a cover of Journey’s “Separate Ways”. The bands singer is named Audra Miller. She is also in a band called Concrete Castles where the sing original music. Listen to their song called “Smile”.

worth considering that he's probably drunk there
he tended to be very anxious on stage and drank a lot to get over it
Edit: just got to the part where you actually see him drink wine... so yeah he's probably drunk in this

This is the best live I've seen. I was like crap when I saw it was a live, but was happily surprised. BTW, this so is about oral sex with a girl during her monthly cycle. "The 28th day. She'll be bleeding again."

If she did, she didn't let on. That's why I was surprised that she did this song. Perhaps sometimes ignorance is bliss. Fun fact, the rest of the band were shocked when Peter unveiled this song to them for the first time. They were like We're really going to do a song about this? O-kaaaay.

First time I saw Type O it was a truly awful gig. I mean bad! Really bad. They were awful. Heard later that apparently Peter was really sick that night, but performed anyway. I do believe that, because I saw them again a couple of years later (went for who they were playing with, though I can't for the life of me recall who that was now...been well over 20 years, so cut me some slack), and Type O was great. Being more of a metal than goth guy, I liked Peter's band "Carnivore" better. Regardless, he was a wonderful singer, sadly gone too soon. RIP.

I saw them in Birmingham UK when Dead Again came out. He was pretty ill then, and didn't come on until very late. Paradise Lost supported them and ended up doing an extended set.
