    Unboxing the T1 Miniature 20W Autotuner
    World’s Smallest Stand-Alone ATU!
    The Elecraft T1 is the only automatic antenna tuner that’s sized to match today’s small QRP rigs. It’s one-fourth the size of most other compact ATUs. And at just 5 ounces, the T1 is the ideal backpacking accessory.
    Use with any Low-Power Transceiver
    The T1 can be used with any 0.5-W to 20-W transceiver covering bands in the 160-6 m range. This includes kits, home-built rigs, and commercial transceivers such as the FT-817, IC703, Ten-Tec Argonaut, SG2020, etc.
    Quick, Convenient, and Accurate
    The T1’s 7-inductor, 7-capacitor L-network provides a wide matching range, and its re-tune time from memory is just 1 to 2 seconds. Equally important, the T1 always tries to achieve a 1.0:1 SWR-it doesn’t stop at 1.5:1 or 2.0:1 like some tuners. You won’t even need to change modes to tune. You can use SSB voice or a keyer as well as a constant carrier (AM, FM, CW, etc.).

    Thank you for this post. I'm looking to go more light-weight. In fact, this evening I'm building the QRP Labs QCX / 40m radio. I have used the Elecraft T1 to good effect running 15W from my Yaesu FT-857. Completing the QCX, I will have a true tiny QRP portable.
    To share the setup I know and use, I typically use my FT857 at 100W with LDG YT-100 ATU using either 41' or 85' tiny SOTAbeams antenna wire (26gauge?) sloping from a 10m pole using a 9:1 UnUn that makes a 20' coax feed line the counterpoise. I contacted Namibia from a park in Saratoga, NY (7,400 miles) with that rig. It's not a large setup and tunes fine for at least 40m-10m in my experience. It all fits in an single equipment case plus a 1m collapsed pole. That's fine for a car trunk, but I also want a smaller set up, maybe keep it to only 40m to keep the size/weight to a minimum.
    My question: you are running simple wire with no UnUn on 40m. I am very interested in that. Do you recall the lengths of the radiator and the counterpoise? Any special consideration for lengths? Was your setup selected for 40m, or multiple band - as your radio supports. Do you use the same wire lengths on other bands with that T1?
    Many thanks for listening to my set up and thanks in advance for sharing any wire-related specifics.
    Subscribed. 73 de N1DEL.

    Neat setup. You are going to like that tuner. You just showed me something I did not know. Holding the CQ/set button down put the paddles in a mode that I can send a carrier. I'll have to try that on my YouKits.
    I use a 40 meter half wave end fed. I also have a KX2 but there's just something about the little YouKits that fascinates me. It's a simple tiny low cost radio that does a lot.

    I bought the kit version and I wish I had bought the assembled version. Winding 7 toroids of a total of 91 turns was a bit too much for me as a first time kit builder.
    It's a nice tutorial/exercise into kit building, though.

      Yeah, I don't have time to build stuff maybe when (if) I retire.

    It appears the antenna leads might give better signals if the Red connector went up the pole and the Black (shield) laid on the ground. I too have one for my FT-817/818 for 10 years or so. I highly recommend it as well. 73 de k2gk

    I love my T1, however I have had to replace the tune button switch once in the last 3 years and it seems that its time to do it again as It doesn’t alway respond to pushing it unless I move to the edge of the button and press really hard. Great tuner though, it will tune just about anything you throw at it.

      Joel Caulkins it is great sorry to hear about the button. Ugh

      also had to replace buttons a few times and resolder bnc connectors. I think the remote jack is in its way out. this time I will look for an aluminium enclosure and put proper switches and threaded BNC. I don't mind a few extra grams if I can get it as rugged as my ft817 (dog just caught its leg in the antenna lead and dragged the whole lot crashing onto concrete yet again).
      as for functionality over the last 12 years II's it has performed wonderfully and will indeed tune pretty much anything that can be tuned including house wiring TV antennas ladders and defunkt telephone cables. it's a real pity elecraft don't offer a diecast case option

    That tuner is a hot item, I see a lot of OP's using ot on SOTA activations.

      Ron C I worry about its durability. Read the comments

      I read that too. Well, you seem to be pretty gentle with your gear. I've never seen you throwing it around. I guess just be conscious about doing too much button mashing.

      Ron C yeah I'm probably too gentle I would not take the Icom 7300 out of the house

      That's my one gripe about elecraft. The stuff they make is great, but when you talk about the KX3 or KX2, they arent really built for "the trail". I cant imagine putting my KX2 on a rock or something - its "picnic table" portable. Its just a bit too delicate to just chuck in a bag go hiking.
      Its also a big reason why the Yaesu 817nd and probably its recent non-upgrade to the 818 (6 watts and a more stable oscillator - 14 years and thats all they could come up with) still sell well. The little Yaesu has proven to be durable, versatile, and with its multitude of 3rd party upgrades/accessories (a few made by Elecraft) a favorite of Hams all over.
      Its just...man couldn't Yaesu have put a decent narrow-band filter some digital noise reduction in the upgrade? Its really all that most people wanted.

      You are spot on. I find the thumbscrews loosening on my KX2 all the time. It doesn't see rugged and it's boxy looking.

    How often do you use this tuner? Was thinking about using this for the QRP kits I have put together.

    • @hamradiocq
      @hamradiocq  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't use it often as I often take out my bigger 891 rig or my Elecraft KX2 with a built in tuner.

    Hi. I have this too. Its great for the 817; my only issue with it is that for ssb, I have to whistle into the mic, which probably annoys people. Elecraft makes awesome gear. You going to Hamvention? I'm not, and I live close (like insanely close) to the venue. Won't deal with the nonsense I put up with last year.

    • @timk7749
      @timk7749 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kd8poi Can you place it in AM mode and just key the mic? That should give enough carrier to tune.

      I haven't tried that, I don't know if that will work or not. Interesting idea.

    Can you clarify something in your video? I noticed that the positive post on your connector looks like the counterpoise, and the negative post is the antenna. Shouldn’t that be the other way around? Thx & 73!
