I throw 2 random wires on the Elecraft KX2 for QRP ham radio CW work in the park after riding my bicycle. The KX2 is the best portable radio for ham radio adventuring. Just learn CW and you are on the air.
Random wire antenna for ham radio is the simplest one you can make.
Our KX2 “stealth” transceiver can go wherever your imagination takes you. Thanks to state-of-the-art construction techniques, it’s only 5.8 x 2.8 x 1.5” and weighs just 13 ounces-making it the smallest full-featured HF radio on the planet. Yet it puts out up to 10 watts, covers 9 bands, and shares many features with the KX3. It also works with the KXPA100 amplifier.
To maximize your freedom to roam, you can outfit your KX2 with an internal 2.6 amp-hour Li-ion battery. Current drain is as little as 135 mA, yielding up to 8 hours of typical operation on a single battery charge. There’s also an internal automatic antenna tuner module (KXAT2), which can tune a random wire, dipole, or whip on multiple bands.
A rear tilt-foot angles the KX2 for use on any surface, from desktop to park bench to rock. The KX2 also makes a great moble rig, and can even be used hand-held. It includes a built-in mic for HT-style operation.
The KX2’s powerful 32-bit DSP offers features dual watch, stereo audio, user-programmable filter bandwidths, noise blanking, noise reduction, and auto-notch. RTTY and PSK data modes are built in-no PC needed-as well as a memory keyer and digital voice recorder for transmit.
There are two padded carrying cases for the KX2, including the CS40 and larger CS60. Both include belt straps and an interior compartment.
80-10 meter ham bands; general coverage receive from 3-32.0MHz (also covers 0.5 to 3 MHz with reduced sensitivity)
All modes: SSB, CW, and Data (four sub-modes)
    Ultra-compact size: 2.8”H x 5.8”W x 1.5”D; 13 oz (less options); low-profile knobs and feet for minimum height
Rear tilt foot provides 3-point mount for rugged terrain
Custom high-contrast LCD with alphanumeric text display
Current drain as low as 135 mA in receive mode
    High-performance 32-bit floating-point DSP
Built-in PSK/TTY decode/encode allows data mode operation without a PC; transmit in data modes using CW keyer paddle
    Synthesizer has 1-Hz tuning resolution
Integrated numeric keypad for direct frequency entry

That is a great little trifold bag for your antenna! Would you give me the brand name and a place to buy it. I really enjoyed the video. I'm relearning the code and it's slowly coming along. de N0WDM.

I think I like your channel because you're an average guy with a busy life and family doing ham radio. Most ham vids are retirees with tons of time on their hands mostly home bound.
Kind of reminds me of WG0AT in the burbs but younger with human kids instead of the farm animal variety!

Thanks, I also like to get out away from the house, need the challenge. Probably wouldn't be interesting making the same video in the same place all the time. I will try to keep it fresh.

You need a longwire block, OM. Take care of your tension problems and relieve your rig of 100% of the strain. Tighten it up good and high. Thanks for the video!

It's a bit bulky, but Shakespeare makes a cheap 20ft. Wonderpole crappie pole that I use to hold up a 6.4m wire for portable SWL ops. The only thing you need to hold the pole up is a foot-long piece of 1/2in PVC with a 45-degree angle cut on one end. It also makes it much easier to set up a 55ft. inverted L + 13ft. counterpoise like what I use for QRP - takes a bit longer to set up, but I think getting the high current nodes that much higher up is worth it. There's a lot to be said for simplicity, though - I like what you've got going! 73 de W0ONA . .

Thanks.... I found a 7.2 meter pole on ebay for 9.95 from China. It will be making a video appearance in the coming weeks.

I must say Tom; you are the amateur radio operator I imagine myself being. I'm portable and get around, but nothing like you. I've enjoyed each and every one of your videos. You're a knowledgeable and humble operator who takes the time and energy to share your experience. There should be more amateur radio operators like yourself. Keep on having fun and thanks for all you do. Stay safe and be well....... 72 de Brent VA3YG

Another great video Tom. You do a great job on these videos. I love your honesty and the way you convey what you are learning. You're doing great on CW. Just keep at it and all will be well. You'll be amazed how your speed will pick up. Gradually stop writing everything down and try copying in your head. It really works, just takes time. Great job. Looking forward to your next video.

Tom, I have no association of any kind with this website, but it is focused on copying CW in your head. I believe they offer a 1 week free trial, which will give you the basics. Hope this is of some value to you.

Ughh I'm not a morning person either...as well as no hot coffee for me ;o)
But you're quite brave, jumping on your bicycle this early and bike towards that nice sunrise.
I never operated portable but your video's makes me want to do it in the near future, as I bought a KX1 recently for that purpose.

😀 Found your reply. Thank you. Two years later I’m still struggling with CW but making progress .... up to 11-13 wpm. I find that few hams will slow down to accommodate me. Luckily I caught onto the SKCC slow code day beginning at 00;00 Zulu on the last/first day of the month. 24 hours of CW at 12 wpm or less. Still 100% QRP with various antennas from buddipole to random wire, 2 to 5 watts depending on the rig. MikeinMinnesota N0WDM

I hear ya Micheal. Struggling with CW is a thing many people have. 11-13 is fine there are others out there at that speed.

Nice video. A small bungee cord on the radio end of the antenna would be a good strain relief. Also, on the far end of the antenna, try not to tie it to a solid anchor. Try putting a water bottle in the rope so that it hangs down like a pendulum and can move up and down when the limb moves. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for another great video. This was the first time I've seen the arborist throw line kit packed up. I had no idea it becomes that compact. Now I'm thinking about getting one. Is it worth getting the bag, or would you just recommend the line/weight?

    • @hamradiocq
      @hamradiocq  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

you don't HAVE to have the bag....but when you throw it will come out of the bag a lot easier than on the ground. if it's laying on the ground it will stick to the grass and tangle and stuff. I found one on ebay for about $35.00. Winding up cordage takes forever so I like the bag a lot. They have many more on ebay for about $30ish dollars. It's a lot of fun plust I LOVE the idea of getting an antenna up 70 feet...especially on a mountain or big hill. Do an ebay search for "Tree Rock Climber Arborist Foldable Throw Line Bag"

I'm learning CW myself. You are right about the courage. It gets scary. I do a lot of portable on the beach with a KX2. I am intrigued with your fold up antenna carrier. What the heck is it and where does it come from?

Hey Tom, I’ve been a ham for over 30 years, and only recently got back into it after a long break. I’m doing outdoor radio just about every day and can sympathize with you on CW speed. I am comfortable at 15wpm, but try pushing myself as you did here. Yesterday was my first 20wpm contact (sending and receiving) with “head-copy” only, aside from logging it on my phone. Sometimes you just have to try!
Anyway, great videos. I watch them as they come out and this one was recommended to me today.
All the best and 73 from KB2IOF (also in Texas about the same distance from downtown Houston, but northwest instead of Southwest as Chris was here). Hope to catch you on the air!

Would you mind providing your antenna wire lengths? I do tons of backpacking and this setup seems way more convenient then a dipole.
Are you still using this style antenna for qrp an if so what are your feelings 3 years later? Sorry for all the questions I can't manage to find much information on that that style antenna

    • @hamradiocq
      @hamradiocq  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't remember that exact antenna length, but it matters what band you use. I like 40, 30 and 20 meters a lot. Do a search for random wire antenna length. I do believe 33' is good for 40, 30, 20 15 meters with a tuner. I use an end fed antenna with a balun on it. Look at my videos using the "Packtenna". You can buy an end fed 9:1 balun antenna anywwhere that's built for many bands. Do a google search for "9:1 end fed for 40 meters antenna" for example.

@@hamradiocq my budget for radio equipment is about shot after buying the kx2 shack in a box. I looked at the pack antenna and couldn't justify 100$ on wire..
So what would a good wire configuration be for the random wire including counter poise length?
I'm only good for the technician bands. I'd like to be able to use 10-40m
