  • Hey folks! Peter here, and I've got a mystery to solve with our Land Rover Discovery 4 / LR4! 🚙🕵️‍♂️
    Ever noticed an annoying ticking noise when the engine (TDV6 or SDV6) warms up? I did and it's been driving me absolutely bonkers! 😅 In today's video, I'm putting Liqui Moly's magic hydraulic valve additive to the test. It claims to hush down those hydraulic valves or lifters causing the racket in our beloved ride.
    I've already had a quick engine check at an independent garage, and they drew a blank. So, armed with this Liqui Moly secret weapon, I'm diving into the DIY detective work to silence that pesky noise.
    Now, I've got to be upfront - the video won't reveal the result because, let's face it, the magic doesn't happen in an instant. Instead, I'm planning to roll out a series of videos every 500-1000km to track the progress and see if we can bid farewell to the ticking madness.
    If you're a fellow noise-hater or just love a good automotive mystery, this video is for you! Hit play, join the journey, and let's crack the code together.
    Don't forget to subscribe for updates and stay tuned for the next installment of the Discovery 4 Chronicles!
    Thanks & Best to you all,
    Peter

    I love you channel. I have a 2011 Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE. I have had the ticking issue for the last 120k miles (My ownership - car has 170k miles) . It is my daily driver.
    I am using 5W40 Castrol Magnatec DPF. I have not found the cause of the ticking noise. I will be interested how you find the additive.
    Thanks for great content.

    As mentioned by @coondog25, if the ticking is slow and regular as you describe, its 99% definitely the fan clutch. The ticking will not harm the engine but in hot climates you may find the AC does not work efficiently when the car is stationary. Ticking noises from the engine will be much faster.

    • @notthatkindofachannel

      Well, the ticking does get a little faster the warmer the engine gets. But not quite as fast as the revolutions of the engine itself. I'm curious to see what it will be, if I ever find out 😄

    2 Key elements to keeping these engines reliable is oil changes (good quality oil) and good quality fuel.
    I have the same unit in my XF I also had an engine tick drive me mad.
    Anyways I changed my oil every 6k miles and fuel it only on premium diesel for the last 7-8k miles and the tick has practically vanished.
    These engines are quite sensitive to maintenance schedules and the intervals are far too high I think it’s 15k miles between oil changes on the XF.
    Combined with cheap diesel it makes these cars run very rough it’s wrong that JLR didn’t take care when choosing this engine and its service schedule.
    Mine is running sweet as anything now the ticking was suspected to be an injector.
    Running with premium diesel the car is more responsive, smoother and slightly more refined especially in its power delivery.
    As for the oil doing these frequent oil changes barely increases the running costs but it will make the car last a lot longer

    Hi peter. Im loving your content as always.. i am not 100% convinced your ticking is from the hydraulic lifters, have you checked your altinator belt tensioners and fan clutch? The ticking sounds more like one of those could be the issue. If its definitely in the engine, you could switch to 5w40 oil. I find it much better, specially on a higher mileage engine. I have now 402000km on my D4 SDV6 and it runs perfectly smooth and quiet with castrol 5w40 👍🏻👍🏻

      Hi, when I bought the car I immediately changed the oil to the 5W-40 C3 like our old Discovery 4. I was a bit quieter for the first 500km but then it came back. I hadn't thought about the belt tensioner yet, but it's pretty rough! Thanks for the tip! All the best, Peter

    • @cymutch916

      @notthatkindofachannel I would definitely check the belt tensioner. I had a ticking noise when I bought the car and the tensioner was bad, in fact when I unbolted it, the whole unit split into 2 pieces. And now after 20000km I have a new yet very similar ticking, and it is the fan clutch, which I will address later in the year while I am doing the timing belts and water pump

    Hi, i have the same ticking noise in my Discovery 3. I too think its the hydraulic lifters, or a timing chain issue.
    However, the noise is improved when i use super diesel 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Hey, I've already gone through my standard programme, which includes better oil, injector cleaner etc.. At first it was a little quieter, but over time it got louder again. Let's see if the additive makes a difference.

    Hi Peter, I have the same noise on the same side (2012 RRS SDV6) and, from what I have learned, this noise usually comes from the left side of the vehicle, is clearly audible from the wheel arch, and very little from above. Mine is coming only when the engine is in temperature but, that's weird, only after a drive. If I let the car warm up without driving, the noise doesn't appear. That raises a question: If it was one of the lifters the noise would occur no matter what, wouldn't it? Another one: the frequency of the noise is very far from one that a 24-valve lifter would sound, too low indeed, right? Since the noise tends to disappear as the revs go up, it's hard to state that the noise is coming from them, even assuming that the oil pressure rises with revs and cancels the gap. It's more like the sound of a chain, maybe the timing one where the variable phase operates with tensioners. And this will explain why the noise doesn't appear if don't drive the car but leave it warming up static. I will do some research and testing before tearing down that crap plastic covers to reach the cams. A nightmare. Thanks for your videos which I appreciate very much. Keep going. Cheers mate. Marco

    Hi Peter, I have exactly the same issue. Added also the liqui Moly, checked twice the timing (belt) but nothing helped. Now 1,5 year later the engine is currently in a rebuild and I will replace the camshaft tensioners and the chains. If necessary also the camshaft seats. Let’s see. It is a sign of the engine gets slowly warn. By the way mine is a D3, from 2008 with 160.000km.

    • @notthatkindofachannel

      Hello Maurice! Yes, that's also my current fear, that it's either the chains on the camshafts or the tensioner itself. I'm having the gearbox flushed at the beginning of next week and will ask the guys there to have another look at it. Happy New Year, Peter

  • @vasiabikeru

    Hi Peter. If I’m hearing the ticking noise right, that seems to be the small chain connecting the camshafts I believe. It stretches a bit over time and then makes this sound. It’s a lot of work to replace and doesn’t actually harm the engine, just the ears of it’s masters :) same here with my RRS. Happy new year and looking fw to your new content in ‘24

    • @notthatkindofachannel

      Hey, thanks for your comment! I'm still not sure whether it's not a faulty or leaking injector. I've already seen some videos from other brands where the noise is 100% identical. Thanks, happy new year to you too, Peter

      Hi Peter. Circling back, as I just did a service on mine and when I got home I put the hood up and noticed a pronounced ticking noise in the same location as well. Could this be because of the change to 5W40? I am almost sure this did not happen before the latest oil change. Did you get yours fixed? I’m afraid it can be something that can damage the engine.

    • @notthatkindofachannel

      Hey Jose, happy new year! 🎆
      Regarding the Evoque: We sold it again as it was too confusing for my wife. We couldn't find a problem with the Ingenium engine. The only real problem with these engines are usually the timing chains. These should be replaced quite quickly as soon as they start rattling. Of course there are also problems with the turbos etc., but on the whole they work quite well. However, in my opinion, the 2.2 litre engines were better, even if they needed a good 2 litres more fuel. But as with all engines, maintenance is the most important thing. Change the oil every 10,000-15,000 kilometres rather than at the specified intervals. All the best, Peter

      Hey!

      Hm, but then the ticking should be there from the start, or am I wrong? 🧐 And since it only occurs when the operating temperature is reached, I would rule it out. I only know the sound of a broken camshaft as a loud knocking noise. Personally, I've never heard it just ticking...
      Another thing I've noticed is that the ticking comes from the top right-hand part of the engine, which is where you can hear it best.

      In my opinion, you would be saving money at the wrong end with these vehicles if you didn't change the oil every 10,000 kilometres at the latest. Especially because the engines are not known to last long with poor lubrication. I don't think that 60 € for 6 litres of oil + 12 € for a new filter is expensive.
