Full marks to you young man for taking on a job like this singlehandedly. I wonder if there's any of these LandRovers in the world that don't have problems. All great ideas poorly executed.
Why oh why do people love to sh*t on Land Rovers? - have they never heard of Ford DCTs crapping out regularly? GM's 3.6V6 failing early in its life? CVTs (Nissan?) failing... etc etc. give us a break mate - plenty of other manufacturers' stuff out there poorly executed
This is great video, I've also in countered this kind of work. The issue of the engine is heavy knocking noise, as we inspected the oil condition by removing the oil pan found out metal chips in the oil and in the oil filter as well. We perform body lift to replace engine assembly. Thank you sir and more power.
Great video mate definitely jealous of how easy it is with a hoist and the body off Is definitely a challenge with the body on love your garage / shed setup
Wow! I’ve watched the video 3 times. Well done champ take my hat off to you doing this by yourself. I’m about to have the timing belts changed on mine, one shop said body needs to come off😢 I was horrified another said it can be done with body on, good to see it’s relatively easy to remove the body. Keep up the great videos 👍
Body doesn't have to come off , the timing belts are in the front it's only the fuel Pump belt that's at the back and it's a bloody hassle but can be done from on top of the engine with some yoga moves
Great Job!!! Have any idea as to why I'd be getting oil sweating into the air filter box from the line with the MAF which feeds to the secondary turbo?
I've been watching some channels do the D3 engine swaps with body on. Wow, the body off method wins hands down. I'd buy a hoist just to save my knuckles and swearing.
The Bruz shirt is the real winner of this video mate. Well done on the swap question though if you were to do the same again how long would this generally take and ball park figure? Currently looking at having this done for me.
Bloody hell bro. Well done! Love how modular these cars are, although engine does seems very complex! Is the discovery 3 considerably less complex or easier to work on?
20+ years ago, BMW had issues with nicasil lined bores wearing prematurely on their inline 6 & V8 engines, I changed a few engines back then, similar scenario and piles of parts, but watching you do that made me anxious 😟
The problem stems with a faulty oil pump which doesn't deliver enough oil pressure on start which prolongs the cranking time without sufficient oil going to the crank bearings. After a while, pitting corrosion sets in, and the heating of a dry bearing on cranking will change the alloy grain structure therefore making the bearing slip, blocking the oil hole in the bearing seat of the block. Kaput! Change the oil pump to the new oil pump design as per the service bulletin and you should be fine. It is great engine with a tonne of torque.
@@josephjohnston1894 very few crank issue on the later ones. I think every manufacturer has its problems. I do constantly hear about BMW engines dissembling themselves. I just think a very few dodgy ones you only hear about gains traction on the internets. I just think if they were really that bad, how come I see them everywhere in the country or town. If they were crap no one would buy one. That’s why you don’t see Alfa’s or French cars nowadays. Now that is weird.
@peanuts2105 there must be about 10000 atleast with a broken crankshaft. There's an official poll that's up to 3300, imagine how many more have happened to people that aren't on the forums etc
This video is amazing! Any idea if this engine would fit a 4.4L V8 Disco 3 (LR3)? I would like to do a swap because the stock 4.4L is just terrible on the gas. Sadly there isn't a diesel LR3 offered in the US and swapping a LS engine is really costly. Thank you very much!

How many miles had it covered ? as I assume the crank had snapped . Love these cars but the agro puts me off . All the best as you go along . What was the cost as still thinking .🤔 🙃
Hey mate, this is an excellent video, I am about to replace a cracked crossover pipe on my D4 . Im told this is acheivable by dropping the gearbox. would you agree with this approach as opposed to the full body off.
@@AboutTheBuild Thanks mate, I am watching Outback Discovery video just now and its making the body off look easier. With body off, at least you can get to everything without the tight spaces. Cheers for replying.
A very nice job young man! I'm extremely impressed with how you did it, a lift helps though epecially as you did it all on your lonesome, maybe the dog will forgive me, but he's not a lot of use handing you the spanner's is he? lol The lump sounds twenty times better than the old one.
Nah, a friend of mine who has a machine shop did it. He normally does performance stuff but helped me out. The hardest part is finding a crank that isn't cracked.
The engine cost me around $5000 for a long block but I had to use 3 dead engines to get parts to make 1 good one. A second hand one will set you back 10k and a factory rebuilt will be around 27k from land rover in Australia they were prices I had gotten.
I’m just wondering what’s the mileage on the old engine before you put in the new/recon engine? Usually them discover 3.0 engine can last for how many kilometres?
It had 250,000kms on the old engine. I've seen them over 300,000km and I've also seen them blow up at 60,000km just depends on how hard it gets driven.
nice! I think you made it look way too easy. How long did it all take? I know if I was doing that on mine, I'd have spent a week washing the chassis and everything that I couldn't get to with the car complete!
Bonjour, j'ai un Discovery 4 avec le moteur cassé (3.0 sdv6), mais les moteurs 3.0 sont très chers, je peux mettre un 2.7 tdv6 (c'est moins cher). Merci d'avance pour votre réponse.
You can but the fuel pump is taller. This means that the breather is different, it exits from a different hole on the block. You have to be inventive with a breather routing solution.
I fixed it up for me to drive around I drove it for a while, but moved it on as I want to get a V8 Range Rover because I do a bit of towing and the V8s tow very nicely.
I've seen it done before without lifting the body, it took the guy weeks to get it done and he crushed alot of the pipes down the sides around the turbo. He also told me that he did alot of swearing while doing it.
I just pulled a motor on one of these. If you pull the heads first. The engine comes right out fairly easy without pulling apart the whole front end like that. We like to pull the heads first and when installing the motor back. Do it without the heads on. It’s not that bad.

Superb work and well done. Great to see a young guy who knows his stuff.
Truly enjoyed the video. Great and clean assembly. Car condition is amazing as well for 240k km. No rust.

Yeah normally when that happens it is the turbo bypass valve. The valve either gets rust and sticks or the vacuum supply to the valve has an issue.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video, impressive
Impressive😁👍 That crossover pipe is almost impossible to get at with the chassis on.
Thanks for the video Bruz. More useful than the original Bruzs whole career.
