What do you sleep on when you’re in a hotel? Do you just put a sheet down on the floor or…? I travel quite a bit and hotel mattresses and pillows are my nemesis. But the carpets are often pretty gross too. 😝

I am aobut to start sleeping on a futon since I just moved and didn't want to get a new mattress. Instead, I decided to get a new futon because I have lived years with stiff back, legs, etc. My lack of mobility has led me to being overweight and living perpretually tired. I am about ready to try this. Wish me luck!

Been sleeping on the floor for about a year and I can confirm it has helped sciatica problems and posture. I also get a deeper sleep and need shorter sleep times and feel more energetic. And the icing on the cake is I feel like I have had a decent workout, muscles are stretched, relaxed and I can see definition/fat loss (even with a poor diet at times 😅).

You’re right about taking your time with it…especially if you’re out of shape, like me! I’ve been floored sleeping for a couple months now, and I agree with everything you shared. I fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly, so when I wake up, I’m up. I don’t have an achy back anymore. I used to always sleep on my side, but on the floor it’s actually comfortable to be on my back. Here’s a tip: if your lower back complains after a bit (I have arthritis in my lower back), use a folded up hand towel to support it. So comfortable! Another thing I notice is how easy it is to take a few deep (belly breathing) breaths when on your back on the floor. So relaxing! Like you, I have given up the pillow for back sleeping, but use one when I lay on my side. But, do take your time getting those muscles in shape! I tried to get up without using hands or other supports too soon (like I would never use my hands because “you’re not supposed to” 😂), and strained my muscles! Oops! Taking my time with it and letting it happen more naturally is working far better. Stay sprightly!

Great video Tasha! The floor of my house gets really cold in the winter so when I tossed my mattress I kept my log bed frame (tho I did cut it smaller width wise) and just put a flat board across the whole thing to make a nice platform. Just a foot or more of height makes it a lot warmer to sleep but I still get the firm floor benefits👍🏻 My room is teeny tiny so I also needed the under the bed storage too😃

The next day I asked him if he wanted to go back to sleeping in his bed and he said no. We just sleep on the floor now. First I have to say I love your videos! My daughter and I both love sleeping on the floor. We both use a folded bed quilt and a folded plus blanket as our floor mattress. I always have fresh bedding since I can easily wash these items and that I can just simply put them away in my closet. I do live in the midwest so I do experience cold weather. I just moved in the beginning of this year to house that is built on a slab (so no crawl space or basement). I sleep well and am comfortable. I just add an extra blanket when the temperatures get very low. My daughter uses an electric blanket. Eventually I am going to lower my sofa and ottoman. Right now I switch up sitting on my couch/chairs and sitting on the floor. Thank you for your great content!❤

I've always liked sleeping closer to the floor. It probably started with monsters under the bed, no sense giving them nice hiding spaces. The floor around the bed becomes a table, the space between bed and mattress a perfect nook for books or to keep a drink from getting knocked over. With pillows the bed becomes and lounger. I like standing for work, not lounging, easier to move my body in more ways while standing for long periods. I naturally wiggle a lot anyways, so I don't get the problems a lot of people get from standing still too long. Still, a good reclining chair or a rocking chair can be nice too.

Ok, I had a different experience and I’ll share with you guys. I’m from portugal and I spent my whole life sleeping in bed. Recently I got a bedbug infestation and the only solution was throw in everything away (bed, mattress and pillows). So broke as i am I had to start sleeping on the floor, in the beginning in my yoga mattress, and trust me, it was during a hot summer and it wasn’t bad at all. Just felt the need of something bigger to support my whole body and legs (I’m 1,80m tall). Then I start adding some duvet underneath me to get a bit more softness and it works. Now the winter is here, I still sleeping in the floor buuuuttt, today o just got my firs problem sleeping in the floor. The first layer (in the actual floor) is an empty inflatable mattress (there’s a whole on it) is made out of plastic. The upper part is made out some fabric material and it got moldy. I wish I could show u guys a picture of it. In conclusion, I love sleeping on the floor, it has been very good for my back (I have a herniated disc) and has improved my quality of sleep, but mold is definitely a big problem for me because I am allergic. I am now considering going back to bed because of this, but I confess that I loved having the space in my room free during the day.

Hey Natasha, another fun video, I love your chaotic energy! I had the same problem with the cold floor, and my solution was the cheapest ikea bed, with the firm bed slat, the one made from straight planks, not the bouncy one. excuse my lack of proper english words :D anyway, that way I got off the floor, was warm, and my matress also was able to breathe and I didn't have to worry about air circulation. I had to buy two slats though, to make the spaces between single planks smaller so I wouldn't feel them through the mattress :D hope this helps! :)

I tried to sleep on the floor with thin 3-4 inches memory foam mattress for the last 2 month and I liked it. I genially feel better during a day + I fall asleep much faster. Right now I want to start sleeping on my back, because I am not used to sleep this way, and it feels like sleeping only on my back will improve my sleep even more. But in general, I enjoy it, and I am looking forward to buying my first futon.

I sleep on futon or even thinner things than that for 3 years almost now. I have EDS, I was searching a way to sleep without being more broken in the morning than after a day of walking, getting in train and subway. I just like you find videos on youtube speaking about florr sleeping, and thought, why not? After all the majority of humanity still sleep without matresses right now and it was even more common in history. And I don't regret it, every time I'm not at home I'm broken by the beds of peoples even medical one. Futon is a life saviour for me with my pains that c'ant be solve by the medecines. I will try desk floor too, but right now I'm in the middle of moving flat, so I'm very eager to be able to try it.

I became a floor sleeper by force tbh, and it’s pretty comfortable. I’m a caregiver to my brother who has cancer. Where I am staying there are only 2 beds, I let my mom sleep on one bed and my brother sleeps on the other. I was sleeping on the small living room couch that is provided for us but quickly gave me so much body pain. For awhile I would take the couch cushions and toss them on the floor to sleep, and very quickly I decided to get a twin size mattress topper and just sleep on the floor on it. Sure it’s not an actual bed thing but it’s 4 inches thick and is the perfect size and thickness for sleeping on the floor. I love it. Even when my mom goes home on weekends, I still choose my floor bed over the empty big bed.
But also I never really had body aches on beds before, mainly because I sleep on firm beds. The floor bed feels so much like the bed I have back home that it’s just so comfortable to sleep in.
So my advice is be it floor bed or regular bed, don’t get soft or memory foam beds. Look into more firm mattresses or try floor sleeping. Both are great options

Great video! Through most of. my 20s and early 30s, I slept on a futon mattress on the floor. I always slept well, and it definitely keeps you far more mobile. When I first moved to Thailand a decade ago, my first few places were furnished and came with beds that sat on fairly low frames. The height wasn't the issue; the mattress was, way too soft and springy.
when I got my first unfurnished place I switched back to a futon-style mattress, but on a frame that sits just above the floor (about 3cm) which allows airflow and makes it so I don't have to fold the mattress up every day. Just a convenience thing for me really.
The reduction in all-cause mortality as a result of increased mobility has been my primary focus, being in my mid-40s now has me paying closer attention to this sort of stuff. I just got back from a week-long motorbike trip into northern Thailand, on my last night I stayed in my friend's guest house where he had a western-style bed that was not only very high but very soft. I found that I did not rest well at all, and I woke up with a lot of aches and pains compared to other nights sleeping on lower and harder surfaces.

      @natashatheresa  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks so much for sharing this! And yes, maintaining our mobility reduces our mortality risk and that too is a driving force for me being 41 now as well.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with a low frame! That makes sense to help with air flow!

@@natashatheresa I think you highlighted the mobility part really well and demonstrated it with your effortless stand and sit from your bed.
I am curious if you find that you sleep in the same position all night since making the switch to the floor? when I sleep on a traditional bed and sprung mattress, I will toss and turn all night to find comfortable positions, but when I am sleeping on the floor on my futon mattress, I sleep flat on my back all night and never have to move because I am very comfortable. Do you find the same?
My 40s snuck up on me, lol. I am slowly (and my wife would say stubbornly) finding that my body's limits are not what they were a decade ago. having lost a lot of the weight I packed on between 35-45 has helped, but that doesn't change the reality of father time.
The idea of the airflow from that low frame is to ensure moisture doesn't build up in the mattress since I am not picking it up every day (cuz I am lazy) The same way a slatted bottom of a traditional bed frame allows airflow in a mattress. I think tatami mats offer some of the same function if your pad is on them, just not to the same degree.

I am actually getting a more legit tatami mat shortly, so I’ll see how that goes! We ordered a tatami frame for my mom, the frame is 10 inches off the ground so she isn’t completely on the ground but not too high either, hopefully it will help her to strengthen her lower body again.

the 10-inch high frame for your mom sounds like a great starting point. 10 weeks ago, I woke up with terrible pain in between my shoulder blades. This is a common occurrence for me. Shoulder pain too because I can’t sleep in my back so I side sleep, and I slump my shoulder forward. Well it was the worst it had been for a while and I knew my bed was the issue. We typically her the firmest mattress avail but after a year, it looses the firmness. So I spent $200 and bought a Japanese futon and it took 2 days for me to feel an improvement. It took 2 weeks to get used to getting in and out of it, cause I’m 43 and already achy. But now, I can get in and out easily and have had zero neck, shoulder back or hip pain. 10/10 would recommend. Real question … bugs? So my main hesitation with being all the way on the floor is being in the path of the floor dwellers. I cant control what’s in the building and yard so the occasional roach strolls thru or my neighbors have mice. Worse, hotels. That carpet is teaming with mites and stuff. I am already completely icked out by hotels as a concept, the carpeted floors cannot be cleaned. How do you get started without buying a wooden platform etc? Suggestions?

Hi! Thankfully I don't have a pest problem where I am, aside from an occasional ant, but maybe for places that do, you could instead look at a lower bed frame or something. I think some people on here suggested Ikea frames and then placing a solid plywood base inside rather than the more pliable slats and such. then you still get the benefits of the harder surface without being on the actual floor? I know The Futon Shop has some pretty nice options if you are in the US.

Thanks so much for the input! I did find that when I was on a regular mattress and tried not using a pillow, it didn’t really work and I felt almost upside down too. It really has to be more of a firmer surface, but also, some people have suggested the buckwheat pillows, which is something I haven’t explored yet, but i know from sitting on one, they are good to mold so I imagine you could do the same around your head compared to a regular pillow and shape it in a way that still keeps your spine aligned. It's not just the sleep, think about the movement about having to get up and lay down. When you think about a bed, you don't need anything more than to fall into it or 90 degree movement to get up. To stand up and lay down daily, it's movement outside the standard 90 degree. It's increased muscle and flexibility. When you study on the floor, sleep on the floor, eat on the floor, add up all that movement and flexibility over a lifetime and it adds up.

A huhdred years ago they used to use linen sheets in hospitals which encouraged peoples bodies to heal faster. There’s a great book called “killer clothes” which is all about synthetic fabrics and the risks to health.

HAHAHAHAHA awesome!!! They are the best. I first experienced then when I visited Cali, my husband's mom gave me one to bring home on the plane (she probably got it from a Mexican store) and it BARELY fit into the carryon compartment on the plane LOLLL. and then, I gave it to my mom and she's had it for 15 years now hahahaha.

I, too, finally use the handmade “mexican blankets” which I inherited from my grandparents now that I sleep on the floor. They either go over me or under me for a little more insulation against the cold, which they’re perfect for since they’re not soft and they’re airy.

I've tried to sleep on a futon once but I couldn't sleep the whole night because it was so hard! Is it normal to have that trouble at the biginning and does it get easier with time? Does anybody got used to its futon with tough beginnings? (I am not sure I am using the right words, sorry for my bad english)

Your English is fine I get what you are saying! Yes it’s a gradual thing, I’d give it at least 2-3 weeks but also, maybe just try sleeping on the floor for just a few hours a night then go back to your regular bed. I will actually have a Floor Sleeping 101 video coming out next week with more beginner tips, as well as an ebook! So stay tuned!!!

I have back issues. So I bought a 6 cm latex and a 4cm cocos HD foam toppers. But sleeping on them I have felt pain on shoulders and on the side. Then bought 4cm memory foam. Put over latex but it was to soft then put the latex over a bit better but I have the sense that latex depens falls slowly. So also not god. Do you have some ideas what to do? Put the memory foam under the cocos ?

Oh no I'm sorry to hear this! I'm honestly not quite sure... I can only speak to what has worked for me. But I JUST released another video today, Floor Sleeping 101... maybe there's some insights in there that might help. It sounds to me like maybe those mattresses/foam toppers might not be the best way to transition to the floor, but I'm not a ... sleep expert, I can only speak from my own experiences. Maybe someone else on this thread can chime in as well

Just know that the longer you do it the less you're ever gonna want to sleep on a mattress for any reason! Seriously your friends will come wake you at a hotel and find you sleeping on the floor besides the bed not the horridly soft bed itself!
