The bent elbows cause strain to the ulnar nerves which cause the tingling in the pinkies! Check out ulnar nerve flossing, I find that helps a little bit! I used to get it when sleeping on my mattress, definitely get it more sleeping on my futon for some reason.
I've been sleeping on the floor for about seven days now. Still waiting for that stupid back pain to go away, but I'm not having any trouble with the actual sleeping, so that's nice. I'm loving your whole series on no furniture living!
Funny I tried it for a week or so and I had the exact opposite: day one my back pain got worse, day three to twelve my back pain vanished; but my sleep was much lighter, woke up in the middle of the night, couldn't find a position to sleep back in and ended up going back to bed. Now I sleep in a bed again and I don't have the back pain coming back (I started exercising as well) I want to be able to sleep on the floor because I have to share my bed on a semi regular basis and I'm at the point where on those days I'm literally unable to sleep at all but I'm afraid sleeping occasionally on the floor wouldn't help my case, might be worth a try
I've been sleeping on the floor at the foot of my bed for about three weeks now. Maybe four, I can't remember. I love it now. It's just normal. And I'm sure it's been good for my mobility. Feeling great. I do keep switching between pilow / no pillow - I have a moulded memory foam one and really only need it for when i'm on my side because it feels my neck is at the wrong angle when i'm on my back. Love the new floor sleeping life! Going to be great when I start vanlife, won't have to buy a bulky mattress!
I’ve been sleeping on a tatami mat and Japanese futon for 2 years now and I’m never going back to a bed. I’m 52 and sleep so much better this way. I never have back pain anymore and I rarely wake up in the middle of the night. I use a My Pillow pillow. It is a pretty flat pillow and I use it because I’m a side sleeper and had the same head alignment problem you did. Lastly I use a weighted blanket because it just feels good on my body.
Thanks for sharing what is working for you Christy! Maybe that My Pillow could be helpful to some other viewers who are having pillow issues! I've been looking into weighted blankets myself, thanks for the reminder!
Of course! Just make sure you get the right weight of blanket for your body. I think it’s ideally like 10% of your weight at most recommended. I weigh about 130lbs and mine is a 10lb and it’s perfect.
I have no carpets in my home. I lay a couple towels on the tiles. On that i have a wool underlay. Both those to give airflow under. Then a mattress topper. For my pillow i scrunch it kinda under my neck so it doesn't kink like you showed. Back or side are equally comfy for me... The biggest surprise for me inasmuch as unexpected, is that i can wake up on this rock hard floor and be like " i don't wanna get up i am so comfy" which is something i have Never done in a bed. In a bed i open my eyes and enough of that i am getting up.
I've been dealing with a herniated disc for about a year and a half now. The sciatica pain is off and on with regular flair-ups. I've been dealing with it pretty bad in the past month or so and decided to buy a mat and try to sleep on the floor. I'm about two and a half weeks in and I'm starting to feel like it's beginning to make a difference. It was really hard to get off the floor for the first week. My low back would kill me and the sciatica pain would shoot into my right hip into my thigh. I've found that as time has passed, it's getting easier to get off the floor. I roll over into an 'all fours' position and am able to stand up. Today in particular has been the best I've felt in a long while. This is something I'll be continuing to do and I'm really hoping this is the start to finally getting some relief.
I have slept on a Japanese shikibuton for a few years and love it! As far as a pillow goes, I personally use a super soft feather pillow (soo soft to the point where it is almost flat when I lay on it, but gives just the perfect amount of support) and I position it longways. This way the pillow doesn’t tilt the head uncomfortably and prevents waking up sore. Ever since I angled my pillow my sleep has been amazing! I hope that helps someone! 😊
I literally just injured my back last week while moving my bed, without taking the mattress off first. I love your content, Tasha! I made need to do this.
I understand the principles behind this new way to sleep and these were all great tips/suggestions. It just won't work for me and my physical conditions. I am not able to get down and up off the floor without a major struggle and pain. Good for everyone that has found floor sleeping to their liking and it's working for you.
I regularly wake up with both hands and forearms asleep/with pins and needles, and I sleep mostly on my back too. It dissipates quickly so I am not too worried tbh!
I’ve been thinking about floor sleeping for a year now and your videos pushed me over the edge. I finally got one and will never look back. I’ve been doing it for a few weeks, and I had absolutely no adjustment period for the rest of my body except for my head. I’ve had a bit of a hard time breathing and have to use two pillows but I really wish that wasn’t the case (I’d prefer one lol). Any ideas? Anyways, thanks for inspiring people to make healthier choices!
I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying the floor bed! I am not sure what to do though regarding your head.. I wonder if you should look into My Pillow.. .another viewer mentioned that in a comment on this video. I don't know if this is relevant or not, but my husband snores and we found out a while ago he has sleep apnea, so, he uses a cpap at night to help with airflow.
My pinkies also go numb when I'm sleeping haha, I gues we gonna die ;) I think it's just like you say: we lie down in a specific position and the blood can't circulate properly. But I think as long as it's not for too long we should be fine :'D Weird way to wake up to this feeling though 😄
So I recently got a futon mattress after watching your videos. I use my current bed frame, added a bunkie board to put over the slats to keep anything from sinking through. I then added a coconut coir pad to allow airflow and then my futon mattress. Eventually I would like to be on the floor and use a tatami mat because I feel the firmer surface would be even better however there is a lot of dust in my studio apartment so being up a little higher is ideal for now as well as the storage space I utilize underneath my bed. As far as the numbness in your thumbs, there is a nerve that runs along your elbow which may be causing some of your numbness. I have carpel tunnel and my left thumb goes numb often along with my whole hand if it’s bad. Keeping your elbows from bending too much and laying your arms flat at your sides should help with preventing the numbness. I hope this helps. I love your videos! Always looking forward to the next one! I’m also really enjoying my Stay Sprightly mug! Thank you for what you do! 😊
Oh yayyyyyyyyyyy!! Yah I guess the blood just don’t pump right if I keep my hands up like that lollll! Thank you so much for your support, glad you like the mug and I appreciate youuuuu
I love your videos and I've been sleeping on the floor for a month now, with a short transition period. I have a very small room and want to get rid of my bed. But where do I relax? Right now I'm laying in bed to browse the web or watch a movie.
I'm so glad you are enjoying the floor! What are you using to be on the floor? Is it a futon? Id' just fold it up into a little couchy couch, or just relax on the floor futon maybe, OR get a few floor cushions.
So I can’t sleep on our floor because we have an unfinished crawl space and it’s dreadfully cold. I bought a three inch foam mattress for kids and put it on my bed. It’s very hard and I’m very happy with the results.
I've wondered, how often are you dusting/cleaning the floor? What is your heating situation? Just wondering about the vents and dust that blows out just above floor level.
Personnaly living more on the floor make me swipe my floor more often yes, but more easilly because I have less funitures. And for the quality breathing I find that being closer to the floor make no differences, but not having an heavy matress and pillows full of dust/acarians and stuff help me a lot! I also try to fluff out and hang out during the day my futon and my duvet a lot more and that's help too.
Valid question!! Every few days we sweep/vacuum and every couple weeks run a steamer mop. We have gotten our ducts cleaned recently and change the filter quarterly as needed. I haven't noticed anything hehe. I know I am particularly sensitive to dust, but haven't had any allergy issues as of late. We have vents in the floor nearby the bed.
I mentioned last time I was going to an airbnb and was dreading it...I was right, it's killing my hips and back, RIP lol. Also my girlfriend(we're moving in together) vetoed the floor bed! She hated mine lmao. Thankfully she wants a firm mattress at least so wish me(and my back) luck...
I tried but I started having shoulder problems because of it during side sleeping. Perhaps if I did partial floor and mattress during the night for a while. I don't know. I still like the idea of floor sitting but getting a thicker mattress is what has worked for me in the short term but I'm not convinced either way maybe floor still might be better.
@@djangosoftwaredeveloper I’m sorry to hear about your shoulder issue!! Definitely don’t force it, I would say if you were able to sleep more on your back maybe it could be of help there, but yeah, if your side is giving you trouble that is definitely something to heed. Keep me Updated!
Sounds good to me!! I mention it in the ebook actually, I just didn’t get to mention it in the video hehehe! But something like a lower than usual bed frame and make it more solid by using plywood or something to lay a futon mattress on :)
@natashatheresa I have a really hefty bed frame that's got a solid spot for the mattress and I always wondered what it'd be like with a thin lil thing atop rather than this overpriced mattress that's sinking already 🙃
I've benn sleeping on the floor for a little over a week now while I have seen some improvements, laying on my back without pillows seem to be a no go for me at the moment. Sleeping on my side works fine but I do want to train myself to sleep on the back without too many pillows or none at all. Is this something that can be accomplished? If so, what advice would you give.
@ oh yeahhhhh that sounds similar to how I felt for a bit. It took my muscles some time to build up some… strength I guess you can say. Even when I would lay on my side, my muscles around my hips were sore for a bit as well. Hopefully you just need a little more time for adjusting!
@natashatheresa Gotcha, that makes sense. I've always had back issues, so I was being paranoid. I'll keep at it and keep you up to date on the changes. Thank you!
I also have the pinky thing but I sleep in bed, it terrifies me because I'm a perfectly basic position and my body goes *WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU* on me, I guess we restrict a nerve which could be something to look out for but in my understanding stretches help
I got me the bed and I was like wait it gonna pull me off the floor. Amazon won’t let me return it neither. Plus I can’t hang my stuff, so I got a futon dryer as well. More work than just sleeping on the floor, but I didn’t have a cover long enough for my body. So hopefully I didn’t fuck up too bad moving to this bed😭😭😭. I feel like I will easily find a way to bounce it off to someone if I don’t like it.
I've started sleeping on the floor since like October, but my futon is so heavy. 😭 Now I know that I bought too big one, but live still goes one hahae. But moving it is so annoying… and I am somewhat strong, so yeah, please people, buy not that big ones hahae.
What are your thoughts on floor matress materials? What opinions are out there? What are the pros and cons of the different materials? Feel free to answer in video or ebook format. 😉
Hi!! I’m actually going to be trying out another futon mattress in a few weeks that is made of organic cotton or something! I will be going more into details about materials after I’ve had time to try it out and do some more research! It’s a very good question thank you!!!
