I found yoga about nine years ago, when I was 62. Started out slowly, shorter classes and trying to do better at the basic poses. Now, I go for two hours a day, five days a week. It makes a big difference in my flexibility, strength and attitude. Yoga has become a part of my life. Stick with it, and you'll find it can really help make you a better person, both physically and spiritually.

I definitely noticed as a man doing yoga that we're taught the pinnacle of masculinity is strength above all else. I know lots of guys even athletes that struggle with flexibility and balance because they focus so much on strength building. Yoga for me is a good reminder that there are many aspects of a healthy body and mind, and everything is about balance.

I’m so happy you tried yoga! Something your followers might like to know is that yoga is more than just asana (poses). Yoga is made up of nine different branches including things like prānāyāma (breathwork) as well as yamas and niyamas (“behavioral guidelines” that will lead to a better quality of life. They say simple things like don’t murder. 😂) Yoga is a really well-thought-out and beautiful lifestyle practice made for all shapes, sizes, gender identities, races, ect. so I’m happy to see you enjoyed it!! 🥰🥰🥰 - Shanell

Thank you! This needs to be higher up. The word yoga means "union" - yoga is not about becoming flexible or an exercise as it seems to have become unfortunately. Yoga is about breaking down all the boundaries you currently have in order to create union with everything. The postures are just one small aspect and that too each has a purpose. Highly reccomend checking out someone like Sadhguru, ramakrishna parmahasa, swami vivekananda to learn more about the essence of this ancient vedic knowledge.

I’ve been practicing for about 6 years now and starting to practice yoga is probably the best decision I ever made foe myself. I grew up doing dance and gymnastics, and when I went to college and left those things behind for my biology degree, I felt really out of sync with my own body. Once I started practicing yoga, I got back in touch with how it felt to move my body well and to respect it. With the added benefit of meditation and mindfulness, yoga is just an all around gem. So glad you enjoyed it! I honestly really really love the yoga instructors on the Peloton app. The offerings are vary more than I anticipated! There is something for everyone, whether you’re looking to sweat a lot or just move your body in a mindful way. Aditi Shah and Mariana Fernandez are my faves!

Take it from me, yoga is even more challenging if you start it at the age of 56, as I did two months ago - lots of positions I can barely manage, even simple ones, but I'm stubborn as hell so I won't give up. You've done a great thing beginning at 34. I'm so glad you enjoy it!

I never liked yoga in the past - now I love it. Yes, it is challenging, but I took it slowly. I started at 59 with Adriene (and dog Benji), who is very warm and accepting of falling over. Just 20 - 30 mins per day (sometimes I miss a day or two), and at 65 I feel so good, more flexibility, strength, mindfulness and better breathing. As we get older, we need to look after our backs. Glad you found it like I did.

Here I am at 56 deciding to start yoga tomorrow. I’m telling myself I’m going to commit to doing it every day like I said before. I’m disabled and don’t work but my dogs get me up at 6:00. No more excuses. I can do this. While the dogs run around outside I’ll be out there with them, on my mat, doing my mind and body a favor.

I had a car accident in my early 20's and broke 4 spinal cords. Even when the bones were healed I still had back pain for years to come, needed to rest every 20 minutes somewhere. I tried many things to overcome the chronic pain, going to the gym 3-4x a week, physiotherapy, accupuncture, swimming, tai-chi, qi-gong etc. When I started meditating however everything changed which was counterintuitive to me in the beginning(doing nothing to overcome pain?). After some time meditation brought me to realize with clarity what yoga really was - not just a different style of pilates for women in skinny leggings (as I ignorantly perceived it back then), but a method to realize the mechanics of being human and exploring the life that I am from within, not intellectually but by experience. Yoga made me realize that the basis of all human experience comes from within. Of course, it has its physical benefits but it is not a physical practice. It is a method to live in experience with what is beyond our physical 5-sense-perception. It is a method to obliterate the boundaries of your individuality because right now we got the wrong idea of being separate from life. When we speak of ourselves we speak in terms of 'me' AND the 'universe' out there. This is a false belief we carry - there is no separation. There is no - you AND life - but just life. You are life. Yoga means to unite, to yoke - what? To yoke your individual experience with the cosmic, realizing by experience, not by thinking that there is no separation. This is not a philosophy or belief system, you can experience it the same way you experience your breath. Now life can happen in limitless ways within you, beyond thought, beyond imagination, beyond memory, beyond survival and biology. It is only when we resist life, we suffer. Yoga is a method to end suffering because having realized that the basis of suffering is coming from within. I may not have 100% control over my circumstances, but at least what happens within me should happen the way I want to, isn't it? When one transcends yoga as a practice, experientially, yoga becomes a state of consciousness - a state of union with the rest of existence - simply being life and life.

Coming up to my goal of 365 days of yoga on Jan 1-yoga everyday first thing in the morning-some days 20 to 45 mins, weekends up to an hour. Consistency makes all the difference- not the length of the practice. I have gotten stronger physically, my stress level has decreased, my anxiety has become more manageable and I feel grounded and calmer. I look and feel better than I have in a long time. Please try yoga 30 days and don’t treat it like a fitness workout. Tune in to your body, drop your expectations, and the practice will work it’s magic. I highly recommend Yoga with Adriene and Sarabeth Yoga. Don’t worry if you are doing it right, just keep at it. You will be astonished at how you feel after 30 days. Good luck!❤

I think yoga is a thing that would constantly challenge us while still remains the basic poses. The salt stuff and all that are bs, no need to listen to that...

I randomly decided to try a 10 Minute video for neck stretches because I had a lot of neck and shoulder tension at the time. Stumbled upon Yoga with Kassandra’s TH-cam channel, meaning I stumbled into the best possible habit I could introduce into my routine.
Did her 30 day, 10 minute morning challenge, each day focusing on a different area of the body. It was the first thing I did every morning, and I noticed the benefits right away. This challenge was the first that I ever felt truly motivated to complete!
From then to now, yoga has become such an integral part of my life. I’ve lost over 100 pounds and feel such a difference in my joints. I have toned muscles I haven’t seen since high school. 😂 I feel so much more positive when I use yoga to start my day.
To anyone thinking about it, give it a shot 😄. Even just 10 minutes a day can be enough to change how you feel physically/emotionally/spiritually/positively 😊.

Hey Matt, you might want to control your descent down whilst on a headstand. Don't use momentum to swing yourself up and down. It's all about using the core and back muscles to control your movements. Continue the practice and don't give up!

Highly relatable, I started practicing yoga in the recent week and it's really good. I have been playing cricket for years, did gymming for 2 years and meditation for years. But doing yoga is different and fun. Mix of Body activity and mediation, it's a lethal combo 💥

It’s really great to see you trying yoga! I’ve been through this amazing process too. And I strongly you go to a yoga class first before practicing at home, because there are lots and lots and things that needs being paid attention to. And these basics are the keys which brings you wonderful feelings after practice.

I'm kind of new to your channel. Loved this video. I've been practicing yoga for...8-ish years now after leaving the military with PTSD. Like yourself, I kind of talked a lot of crap about it until I started practicing on a regular basis. It's funny that people think yoga is "just stretching" and they don't realize how physically challenging it is until they're on their hands and unable to hold a pose, so they start squirming. lol.
I'm also 34, and as a licensed physical therapist assistant, I learned that what I love about the physical practice of yoga is that it's a balance between flexibility and strength. If you had just flexibility, you wouldn't have the muscular strength to provide stability; if you had just strength, you would be in such a contracted state that would limit mobility--both of which are injuries waiting to happen if it hadn't already.

Try callisthenics or gymnastic rings for 30 days!! Gymnastic Rings are such a powerful challenge and go hand in hand with yoga as they challenge resistance and mobility x

It was very refreshing to see a fit guy like you struggle with a side plank (at the beginning). When I started Yoga it was one of the most difficult things for me to do and just recently, I just did it and it wasn't a problem anymore. That felt weird, but also pretty cool. Love that you caught the Yogi Bug :D

I loved your video! As a yoga teacher, it was really interesting for me to see and hear your approach as a beginner. Your attitude toward your practice is perfect - very yogic! Yoga should always feel comfortable, never painful, and you did a great job of working at your personal comfort level. The best part is that at the end of the 30 days you set realistic goals to make yoga a part of your daily/weekly routine. Nice work! All the best! :)

This is so literally like most of the other guy beginners I've seen in yoga class. Socks and heading into advanced routines right away because they see it as sports. That being said, I love how he starts to love it!

The thing I like about yoga, is that you can keep working out daily when travelling. It's super basic to get started you just need a mat, so it's affordable.

loved it. i really wish for the health industry, to not just push athlete looking body, but push healthy practices in general. i mean a good look obviously sells more, but the complete package is just more sustainable. trying to become the best in a certain domain will always make you invest less in other domains, but to be a healthy person, thinking about every aspect is just necessary

I had to look away when you tried that tripod headstand! Lovely to see you try yoga and actually enjoying it enough to continue. It's a shame the way yoga has been marketed for flexible and thin women, when it was originally created for men, by men and really everyone can benefit from not just the yoga poses but the mindfulness you gain from practicing yoga. Thanks for this experiment and video.

I feel you Matt! I just started my 30 day yoga challenge (Yoga with Adrienne, yup!) and my usual soreness in the mornings are decreasing day by day! The beauty indeed is in its slowness - and its so easy to incorporate in your daily routine. Never thought I would like it this much within the first few days of my practice🥰

hello there, just letting you know my yoga teacher told me when you do the position, try your best to keep your breath, and never hold your breath cuz it may cause muscle injured. also I am trying yoga recently as well :) even though I hate it before but now I fall in love with this sport!

I’ve started doing hot power yoga (not bikram!) this past month in addition to my 3x weekly weight training and I just love it so much. I feel like my squats are more proper depth and my hip mobility is getting better. It really surprised me how much upper and lower body strength it required to hold certain poses. I love how it makes you focus solely on the poses. I also find is helps with mental fortitude. 🧘🏽‍♀️
