Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that's been said to increase mindfulness, flexibility & strength. But how will we know if it's actually legit until a white 33 year old TH-camr gives it a shot for himself? In this video, I try yoga for 30 days to see if I experience the proclaimed benefits. Will it be something I bring into my daily routine going forward?

I found yoga about nine years ago, when I was 62. Started out slowly, shorter classes and trying to do better at the basic poses. Now, I go for two hours a day, five days a week. It makes a big difference in my flexibility, strength and attitude. Yoga has become a part of my life. Stick with it, and you'll find it can really help make you a better person, both physically and spiritually.

I definitely noticed as a man doing yoga that we're taught the pinnacle of masculinity is strength above all else. I know lots of guys even athletes that struggle with flexibility and balance because they focus so much on strength building. Yoga for me is a good reminder that there are many aspects of a healthy body and mind, and everything is about balance.

I’m so happy you tried yoga! Something your followers might like to know is that yoga is more than just asana (poses). Yoga is made up of nine different branches including things like prānāyāma (breathwork) as well as yamas and niyamas (“behavioral guidelines” that will lead to a better quality of life. They say simple things like don’t murder. 😂) Yoga is a really well-thought-out and beautiful lifestyle practice made for all shapes, sizes, gender identities, races, ect. so I’m happy to see you enjoyed it!! 🥰🥰🥰 - Shanell

Thank you! This needs to be higher up. The word yoga means "union" - yoga is not about becoming flexible or an exercise as it seems to have become unfortunately. Yoga is about breaking down all the boundaries you currently have in order to create union with everything. The postures are just one small aspect and that too each has a purpose. Highly reccomend checking out someone like Sadhguru, ramakrishna parmahasa, swami vivekananda to learn more about the essence of this ancient vedic knowledge.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Indians love when white people validate Indian things and will always be suckers for it. And white TH-camrs have figured this out. They know they can get a massive surge in Indian viewers by doing something Indian, and like clockwork, Indians are in the comments section going “so glad you started doing Indian things!Proud to be Indian 🇮🇳! Jai Hind!!!”

@@snoopbob9702 it's a science in its own....the holistic approach of body and mind. Yoga means union. There are definite hindu practices there. But the mental wellness comes with it is great. It preps me up to face the day....not aggressively but happily more compassionate and spreading cheers. U should try it. Sadguru and many more gurus are out there. Also, a ashram visit in india ba practically living and doing yoga will change your world view apart from health benefits that comes with it.

I never liked yoga in the past - now I love it. Yes, it is challenging, but I took it slowly. I started at 59 with Adriene (and dog Benji), who is very warm and accepting of falling over. Just 20 - 30 mins per day (sometimes I miss a day or two), and at 65 I feel so good, more flexibility, strength, mindfulness and better breathing. As we get older, we need to look after our backs. Glad you found it like I did.

Here I am at 56 deciding to start yoga tomorrow. I’m telling myself I’m going to commit to doing it every day like I said before. I’m disabled and don’t work but my dogs get me up at 6:00. I grew up doing dance and gymnastics, and when I went to college and left those things behind for my biology degree, I felt really out of sync with my own body. I had a car accident in my early 20's and broke 4 spinal cords. Even when the bones were healed I still had back pain for years to come, needed to rest every 20 minutes somewhere. I tried many things to overcome the chronic pain, going to the gym 3-4x a week, physiotherapy, accupuncture, swimming, tai-chi, qi-gong etc. When I started meditating however everything changed which was counterintuitive to me in the beginning(doing nothing to overcome pain?). After some time meditation brought me to realize with clarity what yoga really was - not just a different style of pilates for women in skinny leggings (as I ignorantly perceived it back then), but a method to realize the mechanics of being human and exploring the life that I am from within, not intellectually but by experience. Yoga made me realize that the basis of all human experience comes from within. Of course, it has its physical benefits but it is not a physical practice. It is a method to live in experience with what is beyond our physical 5-sense-perception. It is a method to obliterate the boundaries of your individuality because right now we got the wrong idea of being separate from life. When we speak of ourselves we speak in terms of 'me' AND the 'universe' out there. This is a false belief we carry - there is no separation. There is no - you AND life - but just life. You are life. Yoga means to unite, to yoke - what? To yoke your individual experience with the cosmic, realizing by experience, not by thinking that there is no separation. This is not a philosophy or belief system, you can experience it the same way you experience your breath. Now life can happen in limitless ways within you, beyond thought, beyond imagination, beyond memory, beyond survival and biology. It is only when we resist life, we suffer. Yoga is a method to end suffering because having realized that the basis of suffering is coming from within. I may not have 100% control over my circumstances, but at least what happens within me should happen the way I want to, isn't it? When one transcends yoga as a practice, experientially, yoga becomes a state of consciousness - a state of union with the rest of existence - simply being life and life.

The salt stuff and all that are bs, no need to listen to that...

Consistency makes all the difference- not the length of the practice. I have gotten stronger physically, my stress level has decreased, my anxiety has become more manageable and I feel grounded and calmer. I look and feel better than I have in a long time. Please try yoga 30 days and don’t treat it like a fitness workout. Tune in to your body, drop your expectations, and the practice will work it’s magic. Yoga with Adrienne is the best ! Practiced for over twenty years and love to practice with her for a nice at home practice . Been doing it everyday . Yet for anyone wanting to give this kind of challenge a go . You have to practice with a teacher at first to help with placement . It is soooo important

Ok, so 30 days of yoga it is. Starting tomorrow. Ive done almost every 30 day challange you have done already and some of them really stick. The cold showers , heavy breathing and fasting i implemented into my busy life and them calmed my mind so much. Thank you

Yoga is one of those things that's way harder than it looks. One of the best things you can do for your health. Great vid, Matt.

I loved this video so much !
I tried the 30 days of yoga challenge myself a while back
and I was thrilled to see that you looked EXACTLY like me on day one.
I also used to think of yoga as something not sufficiently challenging, and stuck to my lifting routines,
now I can say that even though every discipline has its own upsides and benefits ( and I practice quite a few ), IMHO - yoga is the most rewarding, most bang for your buck :)
great content as usual, thank you matt

It was very refreshing to see a fit guy like you struggle with a side plank (at the beginning). When I started Yoga it was one of the most difficult things for me to do and just recently, I just did it and it wasn't a problem anymore. That felt weird, but also pretty cool. Love that you caught the Yogi Bug :D

I have been doing yoga for the past seven years, 2 without a yoga teacher, and these 5 years with a certified yoga teacher. The difference is tremendous. I highly recommend you get guided by one at least once a week. sometimes we don't realize we are doing something wrong and the smallest detail makes a difference in yoga.

That is so correct. To have someone correct your pose can avoid serious damage! Also to do yoga in front of a mirror helps to adjust the own pose. And you wont look too „angry focused“.

Agree...I had started with TH-cam videos ..but only a month back joined yog classes...and I know the difference...to everyone...go to a proper teacher ,learn n then practice on your own

Amazing! 30 days and you're a yoga pro. I can't believe you did a head stand with only 30 days training 😮 I've been doing yoga for years and still can't do one...

Have been doing low key 10 to 15 minutes sessions for a few years on and off now but never got that many results as you did that quickly. Injured myself a few weeks ago so the gym is a no go but this inspired me to give Yoga a serious try. 30 days challenge here I come

I'm kind of new to your channel. Loved this video. I've been practicing yoga for...8-ish years now after leaving the military with PTSD. Like yourself, I kind of talked a lot of crap about it until I started practicing on a regular basis. It's funny that people think yoga is "just stretching" and they don't realize how physically challenging it is until they're on their hands and unable to hold a pose, so they start squirming. lol.
I'm also 34, and as a licensed physical therapist assistant, I learned that what I love about the physical practice of yoga is that it's a balance between flexibility and strength. If you had just flexibility, you wouldn't have the muscular strength to provide stability; if you had just strength, you would be in such a contracted state that would limit mobility--both of which are injuries waiting to happen if it hadn't already.

Awesome video Matt! This is something I have wanted to start in my life! I always considered yoga to be something for middle-aged women/moms but after all reading about all the benefits to mobility and how much it can prevent injury I knew I had to try it! Thanks for documenting your experience!

Hey Matt, you might want to control your descent down whilst on a headstand. Don't use momentum to swing yourself up and down. It's all about using the core and back muscles to control your movements. Continue the practice and don't give up!

I’ve started doing hot power yoga (not bikram!) this past month in addition to my 3x weekly weight training and I just love it so much. I feel like my squats are more proper depth and my hip mobility is getting better. It really surprised me how much upper and lower body strength it required to hold certain poses. I love how it makes you focus solely on the poses. I also find is helps with mental fortitude. 🧘🏽‍♀️

I was really curious to see how you were going to make a mundane and repetitive practice interesting. But your storytelling skills made this awesome! Really happy to see you getting value from yoga. Resuming my yoga practice is one of the best things I've done this year for my presence and spiritual health, along with integrating an alkaline diet - which is what Tom Brady is on right now and what I'd like to see you try for 30 days. Get ready for crazy physical energy!
