Fix Your Takeaway For Good With This Simple Feeling!

- A consistent golf swing starts with a good takeaway. Getting off to a good start in your swing can help you move the club around your body in the most efficient way possible. The most common issue I see is rolling the club to the inside. This can set off a negative chain reaction in your swing making you inconsistent.

Giles, how in this world of ours have you learned so much so early? A takeaway is as simple as taking a plate and rotating it left. Then combine this move by doing it as you rotate. The rehearsal move is like caramel on the Sundae. Nuff said. Best instruction anywhere.
Thank you! I just love to study the game 😁
I watched this right before a range session and it resulted in the best the swing has ever felt. Every other coaching tip just fell right into place after doing this. Most consistent and pure I’ve EVER felt. Thank you!
Amazing! Great to hear this video helped!
What a simple but affective way of explaining the biggest fault in the game. Thanks
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Brilliant- took a lesson and was shown to turn the steering wheel right and get the club up and behind my right shoulder-wonder if this ties to different coaching philosophies over the years- Leadbetter- Cowan- McLean- Jim Hardy- all early 2 D photo capture proponents- since that is all that was available years ago?
@@jack-hq7gr exactly that! Those guys were ahead of their time but now with modern technology we can prove they were right
Nobody has told me this before. This has made the takeaway so much easier and improved my game enormously. Thanks.
Amazing! Glad this helped!
I'm a 70 year old Aussie playing off 18 that will get to single figures in 12 months. I have hosted and produced golf shows and more.
Watched thousands of instructional golf videos. This is the best instructional video: hands down!
Thank You.❤
Thank you so much! Means a lot to hear that from someone with your experience!
Giles, I stumbled across your video tonight and it has been a light bulb moment for me. Suddenly, it just clicked and everything you explained made so much sense to me. Thank you for having the heart of a teacher and explaining what a good takeaway looks like. 👍
I’m glad this was a light bulb moment! Hope this helps you take you game to the next level 👍🏻
I don't usually comment, but felt to it was absolutely necessary. You are a phenomenal coach! Ive watched like 3-4 videos & I feel like despite my disabilities in my hands... you have transformed my swing. Thank you! Highly, Highly recommended!
Wow, thank you! Means a lot to hear that Andre! Great to hear my videos have helped!
Saw this this morning and went to range and was so happy with how I hit the ball! Rehearsal before each shot and struck the ball so well. This is my permanent swing thought from now on. Thank you!
Glad I could help Steve!
This is a VERY effective way to address this common problem.
Thank you
This may be the very best vid I’ve ever watched. This will stop your slice. If it doesn’t, keep watching because you’re not yet understanding this concept fully.
Thank you James!
Thank you. Definitely needed to see this teaching
Glad I could help Danny!
For so long I’ve swung to the inside and didn’t understand why. Now I’ve had a practice with this method and wow. Now I just need to adjust aim and club selection for the extra distance. Thank you.
Glad it helped!
Great video, I have been struggling to keep the club face more closed on takeaway despite trying hard to do so. It’s great to see a video really explain how to try and achieve this, thank you 👍
Glad you enjoyed the video Roman! Using the forearms to control the face is an awesome way of doing it
I can't remember ever hearing the way you described the backswing. I will definitely try this once the course is open for the new season to give me greater width. Keep up the great content. Love your site.
Thank you Jack! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I feel like this isn’t really talked about too much, but it has made the biggest difference. I kid you not, I gained 30 yards with my irons after practicing this. My club was constantly slipping and my strikes were so weak before. But now it feels so much more firm and like my contact is through the ball. Thank you!
That’s some incredible results there!
This is the best video I’ve seen more my issue of a flat takeaway. This will really help! Thank you
Glad I could help Dillon!
brilliant, George uses the alignment stick drill held on the grip and drag it down your left leg. Same result. Excellent.
It’s a fantastic drill!
Fantastic stuff.. Thank you.. Keep up the good work
Thanks you Cruz! Will do!
This is pure GOLD ! Thanks! I can’t wait 2 take this instruction 2 the range tomorrow!
Hope it helps! Let me know how it goes!
This is great teaching. Thanks
Thank you David!
Another great golf tip and so well explained as always. Many thanks.
Thank you Johnny! Great to hear you enjoyed the video!
I know you should probably not watch things like this before you go out on the course, but I did and tried this , instantly improved iron play and dropped my score 👍
That’s awesome! Great to hear you played better!
Great instruction, subscribed.
Thank you!
Giles - I just got off the course and had an inconsistent round, to be honest, and was pretty disappointed. I know my takeaways were all over the place. I discovered your channel and this video, and just want to say thank you so much. This is going to be pretty easy to implement and have been working on it in the backyard ever since. I play in my golf club's Senior Championship in Minnesota tomorrow and Sunday, and can't wait to feel confident with my shots knowing this takeaway method will help me on the course. I'm subscribed and have the alerts set to your channel, so looking forward to a long relationship. Cheers!
Thank you Rich! Hope you play well tomorrow & good luck!
Lovely explanation, thank you very much
No problem! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Awesome tip! This change my takeaway feel for the better.
Amazing! Glad I could help
I having been working on this for a few weeks. Such a difference in my whole swing, strangely helps to keep me on balance and pure the strike
Amazing! Great to hear it helped!
Watched this yesterday. Took it on to the course today, in windy conditions, and saw improved ball striking and tighter dispersion. Brilliant. Thanks!
Amazing Simon! Glad it helped!
Amazing tip! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Super tip and very well explained. Thanks a mill. Will give it a go today! 👌
Hope it goes well!
1 year and a half I have been stuck with this inward swing.. thank you
No problem! Glad I could help!
When I adopted this i did not expect the positive effect it would have on my game! Not only with irons but with wedges and the short game. Never thought of it?! Getting more distance and accuracy. Must be easier to square and maintain the club face through impact. Thanks Giles!
That’s amazing to hear! Often simple swing thoughts work the best! Glad I could help you John!
Great advice…taking club on outside line on takeway generates a powerful strike for driver and irons
Glad you enjoyed the video
Excellent.
Thank you John!
Awesome Video !
Thank you Ruaan!
Excellent teaching on the takeaway
Thank you
Superb great and simple swing thought 👍🏻
Thank you Scotty!
Giles
This is a real light bulb moment for me. I am now madly practising this feel before my next game, but it just feels so right. Thank you.
That’s amazing Paul! This feel has had huge success with my clients and now hopefully with yourself!
I like this format. Time to call up Good Good and Bob Does Sports!
Thank you! That would be class!
What a big-time tip for the takeaway!!
Glad you liked it!
the steering wheel drill is amazing! That solved my mystery on the correct take away. great work again!
Thank you Juan! Great to hear it fixed your takeaway!
Great tip, I am going to try it
Thank you Tony! Glad I could help!
I used to have this problem but fixed it. This video is great way to fix this problem and on a side note ,it Also helps to bring the left shoulder down on the Backswing.
100% agree! Great swing thought
I have suffered from an inability to stop taking my club to the inside for so long….No matter how hard I try. Your tee in the handle of the club has solved my problem, even though I suffer from a severe case of LOFT….( Lack of f…….talent)
That’s great to hear this video has helped!! Has is improved your ball striking?
Thanks. Saw this video and it explained my inconsistencies. Was wondering why did I do the same swing and produces different result. Must be because one day I was turning it left and most days turning it right. Please keep making simple videos like this. I believe you've met many weekend warriors to see their common problems.
Exactly that! Got to keep the swing simple to allow it to translate to your swing
i m impressed. nice .
Thanks a lot
I need to block out some time later and just watch all of your vids lol. I struggle with my club coming inside my hands on the backswing constantly. The driving wheel analogy just clicked with me like nothing else has. Practiced a couple swings and focused on the wheel turning left and I can already feel I'm in a way better position.
Amazing Mark! It’s a great trick that has helped a lot of my clients. Hope you’re enjoying the content!
Yeah genius analogy is that. 👏
Got my sub 👍🏻
Thank you George!
This seems to be a really good swing thought as I've been trying to get out of this inside takeaway move for over 25 years I'll try anything, hopefully this is the long searched for key! 😊
Fingers crossed this is the crucial fix for you Lee!!
Man... you are clear as water!!! Fantastic explaining and drills. Now, you have drills for shallowing the club dowm swing? Thanks!!
Thank you! Yes I’ve done a few videos on the transition and shallowing
Effective video-this is the first time I’ve heard the steering wheel analogy for the backswing.
Thank you Ross! It’s one of my favourite analogies for it!
Great visual by using that red pillow. Well done!
Glad I could help!
This was an awesome video! I took this to the range and it made a world of difference. I even gained some yardage.
Amazing! Glad it helped
Another really good video, Giles - you’re pretty good at this 😊
Great explanation of a very common problem and a great way to visualise the fix.
If anyone wants a real-World example, watch the DP World tour videos of Antoine Rozner winning in Mauritius - he does this on every shot.
Thank you John! He is a fantastic example. Plus that golf course in Mauritius looks amazing
@@Gilesgillgolf It was lovely to look at but too windy for me last week lol 😆

@@jakubzboina7246 oh no! What’s happened?
@@Gilesgillgolf I'm not sure how should I go up from this setup, where club should be. When I setting up with wheel turn to the left end of my club is pointing to my hip, but then when i straitghen arms after backswing it sould be parallel to the groud pointing to the target. I try to mix it up with your DOWNSWING: The Concept That Made Me Turn Pro and have a lot of problems ;)

You are a wonderful teacher ! Can you teach us the proper downswing transition? It is the hardest !
Thank you! Means a lot to hear you say that! Yes of course I’ll add it to the list!
very good video
Thank you John! Glad you enjoyed the video
Hi Giles, love the drills and visualisation you use here. Could you also use the same for the driver? Many thanks John
Hi John, great to hear you enjoyed the video! Yes the exact same feeling can be used with all clubs.
Another great video Giles . I can even practice this one while driving 🤦🏻
Just don’t do it while the car is moving 😂
Great explanation Giles, quick question along those same lines. I have seen on video and been told by an online coach that with my driver I am moving the handle/ grip first instead of the club head. Makes sense as I often sway back because of this. In your opinion how would I go about trying to move club head off ball and keep body turning along with turning the steering wheel to the left. Thanks
I don’t see the probably of moving the hands and club away together or even hands first. I would say that there’s something else going on personally
I needed this. I open up every time and cant seem to find a comfortable/permanent fix
Hope this helps Christian!
Excellent video, do you have a video on reference to the distance from the ball, and ball position? thank you.
I do yes! I have videos on both of these
Good visual with the steering wheel. Never thought about it like that.
Glad you liked it Frankie & hope it helps!

Can't wait to try the tee drill to work on some more consistency in my swing! Can this drill also work for a driver take away?
Yes 1000%!
Jim Furyk is a great example of this take away albeit quite exaggerated in his swing IMHO, he makes it work very well
Exactly that! Matt Wolfe is another exaggerated example

Amazing! Thank you!
Thank you for the tutorial, im gonna fix my swing next week

@@Gilesgillgolf thanks
But i saw a lots of Korean golfer using the other style, steering to the right, instead of steering to the left, is that ok
@@ahmadgolf in the takeaway? So they’re teaching an inside takeaway…
@@Gilesgillgolf yes in the takeaway, so ok thats mean it is inside takeaway
I just saw this one and I am going to the range this afternoon to give it a try because I know I do the opposite. In addition, what you said triggered me to realize that I am not completing my turn during my backswing. Can't wait to see how it turns (no pun intended) out.
Be sure to check out my latest video on how to complete the backswing after this takeaway feel 👍🏻
@@Gilesgillgolfwill do. I did practice the tips from this vids and I can say I can see the progress. I'm hitting a bit thin or fat so I am bottoming out too soon, hopefully I can work that out too.
@@motokawidude6491 whenever you make a change it’s natural to see the strike become a little inconsistent to start with. Did you see any visual difference?
@@Gilesgillgolf I can see the club squaring up better on the takeaway but I feel a bit awkward at the top of the backswing but I intentionally exaggerate the move to get the feel of turning my hands left
@@motokawidude6491 watch my latest TH-cam video as it’s part 2 to this
Been golfing for 4 months now. Im naturally good but ive struggled with consistency. This video helped me tremendously. Something so simple changed my entire swing. Added power and accuracy. Thank you and i subbed asap lmao
Amazing! Glad I could help!
Jim Furyk, Mat Wolff, Buba Watson, A swing etc,etc ?
They’re the extreme but yes same principle
Can you explain the transition from the steering wheel being turned to the left during the start of the backswing to the hand position at the very top? It doesn’t seem that it can be turned to the left throughout the entire backswing.
Around p3 you’ll start to turn it to the right
OK, so this is the first tip on closing the club face that has actually worked for me! However, I am now hooking it a lot. Any thoughts on swing path correction?
Like anything in golf you can over do the sensation. Where does the ball start? Right, left or straight?
@@Gilesgillgolf usually straight then left but sometimes left then left again. My swing for years has been to rotate hands clockwise going back then timing the rotation going through. So your tip is truly a new feel altogether. I’ve lost some distance since doing your your tip but I’ve eliminated the TWO WAY MISS by using your tip so that’s encouraging!
@@eddieyoung3856 so yes this is a complete pattern reversal. Before when you rotate the arms clockwise you would open the face. This would mean you need very active hands in the downswing which allows you to square the face up. Now the face is in a lot more of a neutral position in the backswing. However, if you still do your old release then you’ll be closing the face down way to much. I would check your release and work on making it more passive and less flippy
@@Gilesgillgolf great idea. Do you have a video on that? In my mind I need to adopt the rotational swing but man it’s a big adjustment! Appreciate your engagement!
@@eddieyoung3856 for a more stable release? No I don’t have any release videos out yet but will do in the next few weeks hopefully
Very good. But what about the rest of the swing? I don’t know what to do after the take away? No one seems to go over that part of the swing? Please advise? When you carry the club to left arm parallel you appear to roll your wrists of forearm? I get lost here.
So you want more details on the transition essentially?
this literally changed my whole swing thank you!
Great to hear it helped Alex!
will this tee take away drill work for driveers too?
Yes it will
Other video says turn right back and turn left forward
I wouldn’t listen to those videos then because that’s producing a flat to steep pattern
You're welcome to point me to this video and I won't be in the least offended ;-) - Anand
I’m just filming your analysis right now and I can point you to a video but it won’t be this one ;)

Better late than never! I wish I knew this stuff when I first started
Just once…I would like to see the instructor open the video by showing the correct motion first. Then maybe talk about what players tend to do incorrectly.
Maybe I’ll do that
This feels extremely foreign. Guess that’s a good thing.
Exactly that! If it feels foreign then chances are you’re creating a new movement pattern
Same explanation as every other coach on you tube without explaining after that takeaway what comes next as one feels the right elbow is blocking and flowing motion to the top. You would be different to the rest if you explained in detail after this takeaway how one should take it to the top .. like folding the right elbow .. etc
I have videos coming out on this so stay tuned…
The address sets up the takeaway. The backswing has to be natural and unforced. And if you're not born with talent forget it.
Got to disagree with that rich. This game is for everyone
