When do we shift our weight back towards the target?
What part of the foot do we push into in order to achieve this?
What does the upper body do?
I will answer all 3 of these questions in todays video. By answering these you'll learn how to have an efficient transition which lead to a great downswing. As well this I will run through some simple transition and downswing drills which will give you the correct feelings in order to learn this movement fast.
Do this and you'll transform your golf swing! This is a must watch video for golfers of any level who are serious about improving their swing and game!

Hi everyone,
Would love to know your thoughts on technology in the modern game. Is it good or bad? What’s your favourite piece of golf tech?

I was taught to shift weight to the left and start your swing by pushing off the right foot, but now I see a lot of instructors say not to shift weight but keep it on the left foot, there are so many instructors giving conflicting information or they complicate the swing to the point I have no idea what the hell they are talking about. This video was good.
So the answer to your question is both methods are valid. Look at what you naturally struggle with and pick which method will help you the best
I agree, golf hasn't changed instruction since it started. It gets too complicated.
@@crimn good golf coaching offers options like I try to. But golf is complicated, the key is finding a coach who knows how to simplify it
What is the easiest accessed technology to view the sequencing and timing of ones weight shift in the golf swing?

I’ve never seen this explained so well. Exactly what I needed. Just tried it ! Great contact every swing. Thank you.
Great to hear it helped!
Makes sooo much sense!!! Thank you!
Glad this helped!
Out of all the videos I have watched and I’m talking a lot not one person has said anything about your movement forward in the back swing. The moment I started doing this I was able to strike the ball better and not top the ball like I was doing. This has helped the most so far great advice.
Glad it was helpful!
My golf coach says the same thing, start lower body before the downswing!!!
Giles-you’re a stud instructor. This was one of my favorites for sure. Seeing that side by side technology is awesome. I’ve been trying to correctly time my downswing for weeks and this made it easier to see and work on. Thanks man!
Thank you! Awesome to hear you’re liking the technology and how it’s presented
The vid I sent you is what put this motion/feel in my swing. Feeling the pressure move back in lead foot and not static was an Ah-Ha moment! Another perfect explanation Giles!
Amazing and yes this is the key ah-ha like you said! It’ll be interesting to see what happens
I may have said this before, but you're definitely on a roll Giles. Some fantastic lessons coming out from you. And those golfers who aren't getting your TH-cam feed, are missing out big time. Thank you again.
Thank you so much Steve! Means a lot to hear that!
Always love your instruction videos! Detailed yet not too overwhelming!
Thank you!
Really enjoyed the video. Recently subscribed as I like the way you break things down logically and give clear instructions and exercises. Will take this lesson to the driving range later this week.
Awesome, thank you! Let me know how the session goes!
Old adage… “ as you go back, you go forward”
The step drill gives you so much perceived time to hit the ball.
Even if you go super light on left foot without stepping , then heavy just after hands are hip high on the way back… it does the same thing.
First class video, thank you.
Exactly that!
Your videos are amazing well translated and great examples. I couldn’t agree more with what you say. Keep them coming brother. I am a scratch golfer and have been consistently putting your videos in action love how I am making contact. Thanks
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying them and finding value in them
Giles, it is never too late to teach an ol' dog new tricks. As an octogenarian, I can attest your teaching is the absolute best. All of your videos are excellent; however, the two phase pressure applied to the lead foot was eye opening. Granted, it needs to be drilled to really stick, but done correctly (or almost) it makes the timing and strike so much better. Thanks for you outstanding work.
No problem! Great to hear you’re learning the correct feels/movements
I tried this yesterday for the first time in my life and it has an amazing affect on the swing, it’s effortless!

I have just come across your site and watched this video, I have to say it was very impressive. I have been aware that amateurs are late in the transition but the Morikowa example was amazing. Keep up the great content.
Thank you!
Amazing video. Thank you. I was struggling getting back to my left side from the top. This was causing in part a slice. I was moving from the right to left too late. I’m sure this will help me be more consistent.
Amazing! Hope this earlier shift helps you get the swing in order
Need that next video. Struggling to get the hips open at impact and straightening the right arm early. Great stuff incorporating these drills today
That video is coming Saturday 👍🏻
Great video. This is one of the best I have ever seen.

As a senior golfer I lift my lead heal in the back swing to give more hip turn how can I incorporate the move on to the ball of my foot another great video
Make sure you don’t collapse the lead leg in the backswing as you do it and you’ll be feeling like you put pressure back in the lead foot to get it grounded first, then you can push out
This is exactly what I’m working on with my swing. My coordination (or lack of!) struggles to start the transition while still ending my back swing, plenty of range and home practice required! Great explanation mate, I’ll try this drill out!
Best advice is to start very slow and then gradually build it up
Great video and explanation!
Thank you!
I have always started my downswing with two back flips with a full twist. Arnie always preached swing YOUR swing.
When you entering the olympics?
Even in a drill such as the step drill, which is well recognized for its efficacy, you manage to put a new spin on it!!. The one arm drill is a wonderful way to feel lower body movement. Using both arms in too many drills promotes an on the course feeling of result rather than free flow. Every video you produce is a revelation in how to find a better, simpler way. Simply the best instruction anywhere.
Wow thank you so much! Amazing to hear you’re enjoying the content and finding value in it😁

More great content Sir Andrew!
I’ve been working hard on my left shoulder to get better rotation (from one of your earlier videos) but this video seems to counter your advice about “down & forwards, up & out of the way”, should I aim to be more passive in my upper body and focus on the ball of my left foot instead?
Love the tech BTW.
Cheers.
Thank you! No it’s the same message. As you shift your lead shoulder works down and forwards. Then as you’re pushing out of the ground the lead shoulder works up and out
Best explanation! Simple & direct! Other coaches confused the hell out of golfers 😂
Glad this was simple and easy to understand
Another great video! I definitely fall into that category where I shift way too late
Also I love the added data from the Sportsbox app
Thank you Lewis! Definitely a lot of amateurs struggle with this. It’s awesome isn’t it!
Another great video Giles! As a lot of people have said, you have a way of explaining things that really connects. If there are any technical aspects where there are differing techniques or schools of thought, I’m sure it would help a lot of people if you called them out as there is quite a bit of confusion amongst us poor game improvers…. Thanks again!
Awesome, thank you! Any recommendations and I’m all ears
Your video of the body release vs forearm release, and when to use each one, is a brilliant example. It cleared up such a huge confusion. Dropping the arms vs contorting to pull the trail elbow in front of the body in the downswing would be a good one to cover!

Giles, great vid as always, tried it out and felt like I had so much more time to complete the downswing. Does this principle of hip swaying towards lead leg during backswing also apply with Driver?
Remember it’s not a hip sway. Things are stay engaged and you’re shifting together. But yes also applies with driver
Refreshing. I like the AI concept that follows your theory. Great job!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoy your content. Re: the focus of this vid…one key thing for the same 99% is that this sequencing requires the left hip to move correctly during transition (back, or “clear”). Otherwise, a RH golfer is going to send it farther right than ever before.
Yea I completely agree. Went through that last video 👍🏻
Thanks dude

Thank you for another great video. Does the early change of direction also apply to driver?
Yes it does. Just naturally happens later on
Thank you👍🏻

Enjoy your tutorial, 58 years of golf , and have had a lightbulb moment. My feet have moved similar to your video, but it has been my shoulders, not doing the thing, actually has given me a cramp in my side, thanks
Hope this helps you with your shoulders in the downswing!
SUBSCRIBED. You have great content. Thanks. Where do I send you my bill? Because you just made me take off work early because this is something I've never paid attention to in my golf swing that may be pivotal.. Yikes.. 😂👍
You’re welcome! Let me know how it goes! Apologies to your work for me haha
Very good video. I struggle with with my downswing which is way too fast from the start and usually pull my shots left due to turning too much.
I have a video coming out soon on that!
Enjoy ALL of your 'to the point videos'! I have always believed in the re-centering move (start the downswing about left arm parallel, but how do you make this motion without getting the backswing too short? Is the lower body moving toward the target as the backswing move is completed?. The confusion of this concept is exacerbated by the statement that the 'shift' starts much earlier by the pros. Many thanks, John
Because as you start to shift back your upper body continues to turn (largely due to the momentum of the club) what’s wrong with a short swing anyway?
I agree...I was always taught that getting the club to 'somewhere' around parallel. It is disconcerting when you see it on video. Thanks for the prompt response. John
Great video one question I have about the transition piece with the upper body. When you transfer your weight to the lead foot should you be done rotating your upper body in the backswing?
Thanks
No the upper body continues to complete the turn as the lower body shifts. This happens naturally due to momentum
@@Gilesgillgolf appreciate it thanks
@@adamcarey4109 no problem!
Thank you, Could you do a video about how should the club exits after impact for iron and driver ?
I’ll add it to the list 👍🏻
I love the Sportsbox visual
Thank you mate!
Hello Giles. I like the technology, it helps demonstrate numerically what is sometimes difficult to see visually. It looks in both your demo of an amateur backswing and with Colin Morikawa that the wrists don't consciously hinge, but naturally flex with the body turn to the top of the backswing. Is that correct?
Yes we are both similar in that regard but not every player does it that way 👍🏻
I don’t see how you could hit up on a driver with that motion… please explain I have a hard time hitting up on driver with this shift thx
Watch my other driver video. Going into right bend gives you spine tilt which helps you hit up on the ball. Also extending and clearing the left side of the body helps you hit up
At what point does the shift become a sway and does this also apply to driver?
Great question. Firstly we want the upper body to stay stacked on top of the lower body. Next we need to be engaged with the ground. If not then you’ll be sliding
@gilesgillgolf just curious if you keep a handicap and what it is. I love your content so far.
No when I turned pro and went on tour I lost my handicap. When I did this my handicap was +4.1
Giles, great vid this is a very hard concept, no matter your handicap. However wanted to shout out that I love to see you add some color now to your wardrobe (tan shirt) 😅 looking good man friend.
Thank you wen 😂
Great video. Super easy to apply. But now there is a lack rotation over the left leg after stepping into it. I don't know how to get good rotation on the left leg
I have a video coming out on Saturday about this
Love your videos. You fixed me with one of your videos. But you need some color; try some lighter and brighter colors.
Colour in what? My clothes?
@@Gilesgillgolf Yep.
@@CKGolfer hopefully some brands will give me some brighter clothes 😁
I always struggle with the step drill. Good job explaining what you are supposed to feel with it. I worked out as i turn my right hip back to its max turn pressure goes into my left foot. Hitting with too much pressure on my back foot is still something i struggle with though.
Have you tried keeping more pressure in the lead leg in the backswing
@@Gilesgillgolf yes but then I over do it😂
@@DosLobos watch my rotation videos
If the weight is distributed 50/50 at set up I Would love to know what your initial press is to start the takeaway. That’s my problem to start the flow
@@paulwelsh9325 it’s not 50/50 necessarily but to start the swing you can push off your lead leg. You’ll see the pressure spike under the lead foot
Outstanding presentation and amazing proof of a concept i was never quite sure was technically approved by the golf community. Total amateur here, but humbly quite coordinated, athletic, and addicted to clean contact. However i grew up without any instruction, but rather just tried to repeat those swats that generated that unforgettable clean contact i would eventually stumble upon. And this presentation is so fascinating to me because this move to shift forward barely 50% into the backswing is exactly what i stumbled upon those carefree days as a kid. And as baseball players we used to screw around and step into the swing for fun. And it was fun because it really worked so well. We would crush the ball. Had no idea those prehistoric days would become a tried and true drill one day with amazing technology to boot! This era is truly fascinating to guys that are old enough to have had nothing but trial and error. Anyway, rambling, but great stuff my youtube friend!
Edit: oh and your connection to how this early weight transfer directly causes the diserable position of your back facing the target is brilliant. I think this is what so many pros say after a frustrating round----i got too quick. As an adult my thought process is to hold my shoulder back more, but nope, i think the key is what you state. Just transfer earlier. That's the key move that naturally keeps the back, back, and keeps one from getting too quick. Which like so much in this game is counter intuitive. Transferring earlier is actually a move to slow things down 🤷♀️
Amazing! Great to hear you enjoyed the video. Like you said we can relate this movement to other athletic movements like baseball and find out a lot about sequencing that way
Yeah I think these larger concepts that transcend all sports are vital to good golf instruction. As a kid, it was a baseball feel, but as an adult the most valuable move by far to my game has been to start down like a hockey slap shot into a right upper cut. If I had known that move 20 yrs ago there would have never been Tiger woods and his 15 majors 😂
@@djpoints exactly that 😂
@@Gilesgillgolfpart of me thinks that when tiger retires and sits down with feherty he will credit happy gilmore for confirming everything he knows about golf.
@@djpoints we’ll wait and see 😂
Does this apply equally to the driver swing? Thanks great video.
Yes it does
Giles I seem to be able to complete a practice swing using your demonstration (Which is excellent as usual!) but when it’s time to hit a ball everything goes haywire. Any thoughts? I’ve been dealing with situation for years and years. Help!
Chances are something is else is out of position. Eg clubface, posture, pivot, etc
Would you shift the same for wedges with a 3/4 swing ?
Wedges are a lot more stacked over the left leg. See my wedge video
@@Gilesgillgolf I’m on it 👍
@@paulwelsh9325 great
So if I lift my left heal a bit on the backswing, would that be an inhibitor to being able to get pressure shifted to my lead side earlier? I will play with it, but it may actually help be a trigger to that motion? Your thoughts?
One of the greatest players ever did it so no you’re fine you just have to make sure you shift early enough
How do you position the iron head? Flat on the floor so the main Center of the iron face the target?
Thanks for your answer
I’m guessing you’re talking about the sole of the club. The toe should be up slightly so let your arms hang naturally and grip it where that hands finish. Then from there you’ll be in your perfect spot
Giles, are you pulling the club down, are you turning your upper body to swing the club back down? I go back and forth with these feelings and at the end of the day beyond the shift toward the target I am struggling with what the engine of my swing should be. I have some success with both but find more consistency when my core body turn seems to swing the club down. Any advice on this part?
Depends on your pattern. If you normally get under the plane then leave the hands up, if you come over then pull the hands down
Is the Part II video published yet?
Not yet
Do you have a driver downswing secret video? It is the one I am having trouble with. Thank you.
Yes I have a long driver video (over 30 mins) where it runs through everything
I definitely see the benefit from hitting off turf. Would this "early shift" work on a driver swing, where you are trying to swing up?
Doesn’t matter what club you are using you have to shift back towards the target before you finish the backswing. The setup position and how you push out of the ground are the ground are the keys that help you hit upwards
@@Gilesgillgolf Thanks. Yesterday I tried to copy PGA Tour player Cameron Young, who has a noticeable pause at the top to get the feeling of keeping my back pointing toward the target on the downswing/staying passive. Much fewer skulls and tops (2) yesterday than my previous round.((5)
When I strike well I do feel as if I did a pause at the top. Nice.
Hope this helps
I’m certain this drill will help as I’m someone who waits until I’m fully loaded and then I muscle through the downswing and often leads to inconsistent strikes. My question is that does this approach change depending on whether you have a more “u” swing plane versus a “v” plane? I tend to have a wider circular swing and don’t compress the ball as much as I strike more flush. Is that relevant?
Every arc has a U shape but it’s the width that varies (doesn’t change it into a V shape). Wider arcs get just as much compression with good rotation & a slightly closed clubface to encourage more shaft lean
Have you produced a video for senior seniors (75 +). Rotation and weight shift is far more difficult now than it was 50 years ago. I need uncomplicated advice on distance without injury.
I have done senior videos yes
9:10 That demo swing without a ball looks exactly like the dreaded lower body sway that I had for years. I'm still trying to correct it after hundreds of demos showing rotation. My opinion, copy his swing WITH a ball, not that sway...unless you like push slices.
That swing is me over exaggerating it. Normal the left left would push out hard in order to create rotation and stop sway
I struggle with an incomplete turn not getting my back to the target and not getting my chest facing up at the end of the backswing...I feel this drill will make that even more pronounced and flatten the swing even more?
You need to focus on my rotation drills for the backswing in other videos
So does this mean that the trail hip is still rotating backwards as we’re shifting the wight forward?
Technically yes it does
Curious, if you are really trying to rip one like you did in your recent driver video, where is that power generated, are you stepping harder or is your chest less passive?
Great question. I’m pushing in and out of the ground harder

@@andrewschmidt9390 unfortunately I won’t do any videos on gym/weights. I’m not trained in that area and don’t want to give poor advice
I see your head moves as u shift. is that a good idea?
As long as it re-centres by the top of the backswing then you’re fine
Most of the pros on the tour seem to set the golf club parallel or near parallel to the ground at the top of the backswing. Do they use a different technique from yours?
Jon Rahm… length of backswing is a variable
Nice lesson, however, I think the question "what part of the foot" might need to be re-evaluated. Whenever I hear or read the former greats of the game, who often lifted their heel on the backswing, stomping the heel down is their idea of the first move down. I've heard Nicklaus say the same thing and he was pretty good at golf lol
Stomping the heel is a “feel”. The data shows all top players push into ball of the foot
I had six lesson's about ten years ago it was a complete waste of money my advice teach yourself using video's like this one .
Glad you found value in this lesson and sorry to hear about your past coaching experience
Actually in the swing like a pro book, they found all golfers shift about 2" off the ball. U can see rory do it perfectly, yet most teaching is a stack and tilt for amatuers.
Reason why they do this is because a lot of amateurs find it very hard to time & struggle with the coordination. Even in stack and tilt the pelvis does sway slightly as the start as the club is a weight and drags the body. On tour players have a shift and players do more of a stacked technique. Find what works
What is the simplest and most reliable technology to view ones weight shift in the golf swing?
Normal video
99% of ameteur's makes me wonder about the 1%ers tbh.....
They’re a rare breed
