Thank you Tom! Started hitting draws again. What I find interesting is remembering in one of your videos, you stated the club face is / may be open at impact but coming from the inside will hit draws. The Sim software I was using showed this as well as the actual face angle and club path. Kinda a wish you were here in Canada. We need Pros like you!
I was searching for a swing video validating the inside takeaway and came across yours. I have been trying the straight/out swing for years with inconsistent results, if it worked for irons one day it didn't work for woods and vice versa, I switched to the inside takeaway by accident in my search for a better swing organically, once I practiced the inside takeaway for a few sessions all my irons and woods became more consistent and solved my pull-draw which was caused by the over-the top, which was in turn caused by the straight/outside takeaway. Thank you for validating it, the most important benefit of the inside takeaway is that is makes tuning the hip and shoulders much easier for older golfers!
Excellent job figuring this out, Henry, and I'm very glad to know that this video validated your good efforts in this regard!! The swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders. As such, if we are going to remain on that circle/arc it requires the hands and club to take a slightly inward path - not a disconnected handsy snatch or roll to the inside - just a natural tracing of the outer rim or circumference. The feeling of "straight back" can easily pull the golfer off of that preestablished geometry right from the start, and from there precise compensatory actions are necessary if there is any hope of returning the clubface to the ball on the proper path time after time. Thus the reason for the inconsistency you experienced previously. So rather than have to rely on "dropping it in the slot" the exact amount each and every swing, why not just put in the slot from the start and just keep it there?! We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the tremendous power of swinging on an inclined arc courtesy of the seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum" - where physics and geometry collide. Thanks for your message and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom Saguto, PGA PS: By the way, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. I like the simplicity! Watching too many videos can really take a toll on my swing. Definitely going to try this today and just focus on taking the club inside and not too much hand manipulation and hip rotation.

Tom, I have been following you for about 2 years now, but have to confess that I have been cheating on you for a while now. I got a lot better watching your videos, but thought I needed more so I started watching other people’s video lessons. My game steadily got worse and worse and I couldn’t understand why. My wife finally told me that I needed to just go back to basic Saguto Golf. Well, I did just that and my game is recovering. I should have just stayed with your program and I could have avoided all the frustration. 😢
LOL! I appreciate your "confession"........ Seriously, we must be careful when navigating the muddied, overly-complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. It's best to commit to a system - whether it be this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance method or another - put your blinders on, and stick to it. Now, for your penance you must tell your wife that Tom says she is very intelligent and that from this day forward you will always listen to her. She in turn - being of obvious superior intellect - will clearly understand that a membership in the SagutoGolf online school will serve to fortify her impeccable advice and is in fact the most appropriate Christmas gift to save her husband from his wandering ways. She'll do this because she is well aware of the fact that thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. She also is acutely familiar with the mathematical relationship expressed as follows: Happy Golf = Happy Husband Happy Husband = Happy Life Happy Life = Happy Wife Therefore: Happy Golf = Happy Wife Thus your membership is actually a selfish gift to herself, but then again she already knows that. I absolve you of your swing instruction adultery. Go forth and cheat no more. 😎 Tom
Tom, last week before I got back to working on basic Saguto Golf, I shot a miserable 90 and was frustrated. Of course after my wife gave me her excellent advice, I practiced all week using what you have been teaching. I really have boiled it down to one swing thought. (this is the truth) I picture your swing in my mind, take a practice swing, then hit the ball. Today, I shot 79.
You really take the most logical and comprehensible approach to golf and break it down so easily that it really is a simple "ah-ha" moment every time I watch any of your videos. Thank you!

My new swing doctor is moving me to this and it works. It moves me into a wrist lag too. All of this gives you simple, easy power and I just turned 63! My right knee injury made me think I had to move more straight back "feel" to save my knee. However it did the opposite and caused back issues to. Effortless power is the result of what you are teaching...great job of explaining this to the masses!

I have never been so thrilled. My son who hasn't been able to play much due to Uni, has been shanking badly every time we went to course and range. He lost all confidence and got to the point he was fearful of hitting any shot in case he hit somebody. Awful to see your son struggle so much in a game he enjoys a lot. Now I know it's early days, but I got him to watch your weight forward, inside takeaway vlog and we tried it out this morning at range. My word, what a transformation, striping a 4 hybrid 185 yard carry and smiling from ear to ear! Time and time again, you are our go to Tom, you have returned the smile of two of people now!! Great starting point now that he has finished in uni
That is OUTSTANDING, Simon!! I’m very glad to know that my instruction is also resonating with your son; excellent job helping him to incorporate it into his swing. Thanks so much for sharing his instant ball striking improvement and please tell him to keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom
I hit the range today after watching this video yesterday. I'm in New York so it's cold. I was hitting the ball a touch further but the flight from the compression was insane. The ball was hopping off the face in the cold with less effort through my swing. I can't wait to continue working on this!
Awesome!! There's nothing like that feeling of crispy compression, right?? And I admire your dedication since it's cold all the way down here in SC so I can't imagine the temps up in NY... 😬 I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. I've been off for two years. I told my nephews they need to watch this and teach me to help play better. (trust me, this helps all involved) LOL Saggy, you motivate me to play better with simplicity!! The 10" between my ears is killing me!! ) yes I have a fat head!
LOL! The golf swing is indeed overly complicated in particular by one part of the human body - the brain and all the swing nonsense and misguided instruction it has been fed. Garbage in, garbage out; and countless golf swings have sadly been trashed as a result.... 😎 Thanks for turning your nephews on to SagutoGolf without them knowing it, Alan! TS
Once again, you have hit it out of the park.Lead arm on the shoulder line (9:20) says it all.To me that has always led to far better compression at contact. Hogan was a master of that position. It helps to keep the right elbow connected which I think was his real "secret". Keep up the great work.Your swing looks so much better than it has ever been.
I appreciate that, Daniel, and yes - this body-friendly, powerful, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's greatest ball strikers (including, of course, Mr. Hogan). As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. We can watch any Tour event on TV and see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Thousands of folks across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of learning this swing system through my online school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). Thanks again for your kind words and support!! Tom, your content is excellent and right-on about the takeaway! A friend referred me to watch you and here's my story: I grew up in the 70s, with the straight back takeaway and was a 3 handicap. However, I was a Range Rat for many years. Took a 15 year, golf layoff and picked up the clubs thinking I'd have something like my old game back with a few months range work. Total frustration for a year-and-a-half followed, working on everything but a more inside takeaway, beause I grew up playing the straight-back and found the slot on my downswing. I had a very slight over-the-top move, that unless my timing was good, I had no idea if I was going to pull or slice, wildly. I sought out old Bobby Jones instructional videos and he was incredible and the instruction is timeless! His description of the takeaway is exactly as you describe, Tom! The emphasis Jones placed on that inside takeaway as a major key to his "leisurely swing" with power and on line, had me grudgingly try to incorporate it. Well, it's worked the magic and I finally am seeing the improvement in target consistency skyrocket with added power. I fought the change to a more inside takeaway (as you described yourself), thinking it would flatten the swing leading to duck-hook everything! Interesting that Jones, and many great ball strikers of all time have a slightly cupped wrist at the top, but get back on plane, in the slot on the down swing, because of the foundation, inside takeaway with that trail arm connected longer to the body. Thank you, Tom! You have great content and keep up the great work!
Thanks so much sharing your "reluctant" transition to the inside takeaway, Rich. I sincerely appreciate your validating this lesson with your experience, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content in general is resonating with you!! Yes - many golfers are under the (mis)impression that this is a "flat" swing and that the resulting path is going to create big sweeping hooks all day long. However, consider that the ideal downswing path is the ideal downswing path, regardless of whether one lifts the club up and must then "drop it in the slot" or - as taught here - they just put it in that slot from the start! Rather than "flat" this is simply a one-plane motion, meaning that there is no independent, disconnected lifting of the arms and hands as you would see in a two-plane move. Instead, by properly maintaining our connections the arms, hands, and club are "elevated" as a result of the tilting, turning, and extending motions while the lead arm crosses the chest 45 degrees. So yes - while the "feel" may be hip-high, in actuality by turning our shoulders on that inclined plane and maintaining our relationship with the ball we achieve that classic look and very powerful position at the top displayed by so many great Tour players of yesterday and today! Thanks again for your message and keep up the great work! Tom PS: Would you like to learn some key aspects of the swing I teach in a more structured manner? @@SagutoGolf, Very appreciative for your thoughtful message and I'll check out your material! And yes, totally agree it's not a flat-swing you're instructing, just on plane correctly from the beginning (just had to undo my old-taught and pre-conceived ideas). I never realized how flawed my old swing was, but had spent so much time on the range in my youth, making those many moving parts work for me and could execute it back then. What you're instructing is so much easier to replicate, with far less movement- one doesn't need to be a Range Rat to execute it consistently.
Discovered this for myself just this last summer and never looked back once the penny dropped. Had been following the 'straight back' method for a long time before that with hugely inconsistent results. I now see the 'inside takeaway' gathering momentum amongst tour players. Much more solid ball striking from this technique and a lot easier to execute and repeat. 👌
Nice job figuring this out on your own, Hugh! This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. I am just getting back into golf after a hiatus of about 10 years. I wasn’t very good even at my best then. Now, after about a week I am striking the ball much better and hitting it straighter and longer than ever before. I am following your advice and it’s working. Of course after only a week I still hit bad shots but I am getting more consistent. A guy on the range must have seen one of my bad one’s and came over to share his advice. His advice you got to get your club much higher. Don’t take it around your body. Lift it higher. I laughed inside and thanked him so he’d go away and continue to practice based on your instruction.

@SagutoGolf had to come back to this video today. Been using the weight forward approach for a while now and it's a lifesaver! Hit a few that seemed off and cutty and realized my hands were getting too high thus getting disconnected. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge to everyone
This makes more sense to me than anything I've ever been taught or tried regarding the takeaway.. My best golf coach didn't care if I did an early set (wrist hinge) or not but wanted the shoulders to turn the arms and club back without a need to worry about shallowing on the downswing. As I hit 70 years of age now, it makes even more sense in regards to my reducing flexibility and strength. I haven't hit a 250 + yard drive in several years until I worked on this and it immediately led to my first birdie putt of the day.. Now I just have to drill it in as a habit without thinking about it. Thank you!

Tom, I have the upright swing you speak about. The problem with this swing is, I have two many swing thoughts, and the sequencing has to be perfect or I'm dealing with a slice or a pull. I do use my hips to create power. After watching this vid. I used my shoulders to create power and I performed the swing as you demonstrated including the correct use of the right leg. Results: One swing thought, consistency, more distance, and the ball goes straight. With consistency comes confidence, and with confidence comes low scores. I'm practicing at a golf simulator now but will be using this swing next spring. I find it remarkably simple and consistant. As well, absolutely no pressure on my back. I'm 66 years old from Canada. My seven iron, using this swing is averaging 155 yds. on the simulator. Thanks. Rob

@@SagutoGolf Tom, I'll check it out. My dilemma is I found a gem in your vid. It's simple and easy to replicate. With that said, I don't want to break it down in to pieces, I don't want to get mechanical. I think you know what I mean. I will take a look at your mini series.
The reason why (in my opinion) many golfers take the club straight back is that's what they were taught and then simply don't question what they were taught because they don't know any different. I think things are changing though in the golf instruction world as a whole that taking the club back on plane (or inside) is the way to go. There are some holdouts for the old method, but I think they will be fewer with each passing year. I have a similar story to yours Tom. My dad taught me "lift and shift" and it produced very short shots and a massive banana slice. When I came back to golf after a twenty-year break during the pandemic, I stumbled across your channel in my TH-cam feed. The rest, as they say, is history. I went from a 30 handicap to a 15 handicap in two seasons of outdoor play. The first time in my life I hit a drive OVER 300 yards, usually 250 plus with fifty percent of fairways hit in a round. When I'm on the public courses with random strangers I get paired up with if they comment on my game, I very briefly mention my amazing swing coach Tom Saguto and his TH-cam channel and online golf school. Or I might say "I'm just stacking and tilting." And then they say, "what's that?" Good times 😁
LOL! That's awesome!! Indeed, this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. In fact, watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Then compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). Thanks so much for your support in sharing your dramatic improvement and for referring others to SagutoGolf, and keep up the fabulous work!! 💪 Tom
I was taught straight back and up and then shallowed the club and it worked...2 hip operations and less ability to rotate has made me question this method and I have started the takeaway "inside" naturally to see if it makes a difference so early days. Jackie Burke, like you, says the swing is a circle which means you should go back on the inside. It feels better and connected. Enjoying your videos and explanations.
I commend you on your ability to coordinate that "shift, lift, and drop" action and achieve consistency, Alistair. Very impressive athleticism! Indeed, the swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders. As such, if we are going to remain on that circle/arc it requires the hands and club to take a slightly inward path - not a disconnected handsy snatch or roll to the inside - just a natural tracing of the outer rim or circumference. We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the power of swinging on a circle through a seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum". Beyond that, we don't have to precisely "drop it in the slot" each and every swing if we just put it there to begin with, right? 😎 By the way, given your hip issues, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. I totally agree with you on your premise Tom! Since I started swinging on an incline circle which in turn produces an arc type swing, I have being getting more "ZIP" out of my shots! What I'm trying to accomplish is to "mimic" your recommended movements in this video. This "vertical type swing" definitely has been a change from what I have been doing for the past number of years! Thank You Tom! Your videos have helped me a lot! Let's keep working on bringing my handicap down!
I was a straight back swinger all my life and became armsy and no shoulder t turn.- I’m a better player taking the club inside. But you can get flat if you are not careful
I had this awesome Eureka moment yesterday! OMG! I had amazing power and felt like I could crank my driver 300. ALSO, for the first time ever my divots were LASER STRAIGHT and so was my ball flight! EUREKA! 🎉

Great stuff here, and there really is this authentic anecdote to your approach to the game and teaching that is appealing- Just earlier this year, I was really struggling with this same flawed idea of having to take the club straight back/on the outside. Great to see this. I’ll just leave it at this- In my experience good, solid, sound instruction is hard to come by. What may work for someone may not for someone else and it’s just good to keep an open mind. From a fellow PGA Pro, this was refreshing. So thank you. 👍🏼⛳️

Inside takeaway is definitely where it's at. The golf swing is on an arc and the club really has more pop to it when it goes inside versus straight back. Like you also said, easier on the body too. Glad you're bringing awareness of this highly overlooked concept. Hit em good and merry Christmas!

Honestly "inside takeaway" seems like it actually keeps the clubhead outside my hands...it feels like it's inside but think about it...I'd your hands are going behind your hip right away, how could the club possibly be massively inside that...this video fixed so many faults of mine...hands in=good
I wish I had seen this video 6 months ago. I think all of the straight takeaway, outside-in advice sent me down a path of getting way too steep and I was hooking the ball and getting very weak, inconsistent contact. I pretty much figured out these problems recently on my own, but having some additional confirmation is nice to see. With any advice, focusing too much on a single swing thought can lead to trouble. I can definitely see inside takeaway thoughts leading to using too much arms and less body/shoulders. I still need to make sure I keep my arms in front of my chest and rotate. Thanks for the videos. My swing is coming along nicely now.
I'm glad to learn of your progress, Tim! So rather than have to rely on precisely "dropping it in the slot" the exact amount each and every swing, why not just put in the slot from the start and just keep it there?! We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the tremendous power of swinging on an inclined arc courtesy of the seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum" - where physics and geometry collide. While there are certainly other videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks for sharing your experience and keep up the great work! Hi Tom, not controversial at all. Glad you posted this. I also was originally taught the straight back and could hit it straight, with distance when I was playing each afternoon whilst still in high school. As soon as I went to playing just once a week during my uni days an inconsistent slice entered my game (30 plus years ago). Until I had a few lessons from an Auntie who was playing on the US LPGA Tour. She showed me how get rid of my slice “with an inside takeaway”. Whilst I did go backwards , from memory it just felt weird, different and I wasn’t convinced. Just had to trust someone who was obviously a better golfer than I was and stick to it. It not only got rid of my slice and increase distance, it was also easier. Great video, thanks Tom.

Tom, I’ve started doing this over the past month after watching some of you videos and I am have gotten good and consistent results. Agree 100%. Moreover, it's a hell of a lot easier to get some pressure on your trail leg at the top of the backswing if you take the club to the inside, thereby encouraging the whole body to get involved.
Yes Timothy, and I am very glad you said "pressure" as opposed to "weight". That's because the need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful motion. Thanks for your message! I love your videos. I am currently a 35 handicap (haven’t played a round since getting into your videos). This video plus a few reels have totally changed my swing. I went from topping 95% of my swings and that’s driver and irons. I just went to the range and cut it to maybe 20% tops and I can now feel what I’m doing wrong. I have begun to hook a lot of my shots now unfortunately. Maybe I’m coming to much from underneath now instead of over the top? Who knows but I truly appreciate you.

I’ve been rehabbing my swing after years away. I always liked Ben Hogan and I’ve seen your videos and I think you are in the right zone for your setup. Last time at the range after watching one of your vids on pointing the elbows at the hips I got…… CONSISTENCY! I was hitting irons compressed and driver straight. My hybrid and 5 wood are great too but my 3 wood is a piece of crap. I think it’s too long for me. Anyway, elbows pointed at hips, weight on front side, right elbow glued to ribs, turn the shoulders back and then forward again and throw the shaft down. Wham! Thanks so much!
That's awesome, James!! 💪💪 I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing. With regard to that pesky 3 wood, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Well, that was the first lesson in the first golf book ever written, by Willie Park. He tells us that "in the backswing the club describes a circle". Hogan paraphrased Willie Park jnr when he said that the club "describes an arc" in Power Golf. The left hand is on top of the club at at address and if it is not on top of the club when the club is parallel to the target line the clubface is shut.
Yes, Yes, and Yes! Plain and simple it's all physics and geometry, and these are the pillars of unchanging truths upon which this swing system is based!
Wauw... really enjoying your content but this video is really an eyeopener for me because I was striking well the ball but also losing a lot of distance. And this new takeaway is easy to change instead of other bad habits of me 😁. BR Peter from Belgium

that's how my last coach taught me tom straight back when i hit it nice yeah it felt good but i found it was timing reliant and it made my lower back very sore since i swapped to the way you have said the pains gone and its so much more consistent

I'm totally with you on this, I'm 69 and found the " body" swing was harder for me to do than the " arm" swing... I've come to the conclusion that not just one way is best it's whatever works for you... I still have good enough distance with the arm swing and find it easier than the body swing 🎊🌟🤩🥳

STRAIGHT BACK = DEATH Did it for 40 years. Was taught this from age 12. I got to see a great deal of many golf courses over the years. Started following here and took a lesson with Tom. Honestly, I felt ridiculous when I started it. I kept asking my wife at the range "did that look dumb" she'd say NO you look a lot better. I felt like I was taking a half swing and my back swing was even with my belt loops! I stayed with it from the grip videos all the way through. My game is like night and day. As in before, I was completely in the dark!
LOL!! That belt-high feeling is the same thing some Tour pros conveyed when they first switched to this swing system, Greg, so you’re in good company…. Thanks for your support in sharing your dramatic improvement, say hi to your very observant and intelligent wife 😎, and keep up the fantastic work!! Tom
I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, Greg! Yes - the hands-in component enables you to fully engage the shoulders and access the tremendous stored power source known as angular momentum. Remember back in the day when nearly every football kicker used to approach the ball straight on? (I don't, but my dad tells me about it...) They don't do that anymore, and it's not because they're all converted soccer players. It's been proven through physics and geometry that the angular approach produces far greater force, and as a result in the modern game field goals of 50+ yards are routine now. Thanks for your message and keep up the great work! i sort of self-discovered this on my last round this year. was playing horribly, on hole 16 decided to just try something new and really exaggerated a low and behind takeaway and suddenly was striking the ball way better. it wasn't a fluke, as i've kept with it through simulator leagues so far and my striking is so much better (sadly) than it has been all season. excited for next year!
Nice job figuring it out after being stuck in the "shift & lift" abyss!! This is by no means a "flat" swing as some might misinterpret it to be. It is a one-plane motion, meaning that there is no independent, disconnected lifting of the arms and hands as you would see in a two-plane move (there's no need to "drop it in the slot" if you've already put it there). Instead, by properly maintaining our connections the arms, hands, and club are "elevated" as a resulting of the tilting, turning, and extending motions while the lead arm crosses the chest 45 degrees. So yes - while the "feel" may be hip-high, in actuality by turning our shoulders on that inclined plane and maintaining our relationship with the ball we achieve that classic look and very powerful position at the top! Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Thanks for validating this swing concept by sharing your ball striking improvement, and keep up the great work in that sim league so you can hit the ground running next season!! @mostdeadlygeist - okay - but can you score well with this method with your buddies. I shot 80, 81, 83 golfing on my own using this method with buddies I shot an 105, and then high 90's. So not I am not sure what to do. To use
@@lukelacasse6412 unfortunately, it's 30 degrees and covered in snow where i live so i'll have to stick to simulators until march. my sample size is small, but the few holes i ended on were 2 pars and a bogey, which were a huge improvement that day lol, and it was while golfing with a friend. in the random sim rounds, i'm playing above my average, but it's tougher to judge since it's a mat and perfect lie every time. time will tell.
Glad you enjoyed it! There's really no conflict in the concept since that training aid really just focuses on the first move off the ball, and even then the track is slightly to the inside as mentioned in the video for the product. I think the presumed conflict has to do more with the name because it conjures up the notion of a disconnected straight back move off the ball. This has to be one of the best videos i have come across!! I used to suck the club in completely then i went the other way to eay outside (not a golf swing) then i gave this another go having the feeling of being slightly inside again, and today i had the best ball striking i have had in a long time. Id say 25 were bad out of 100 some open faces and tops buy on the whole solid, case of keep practising, will you do more on the inside feeling? Would be a great series to break down more! Or is it on your website?
I appreciate that, and I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing!! Here are some lessons related to this: - th-cam.com/video/LgYdC-g8DAY/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/1gzcyrJ_yBw/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/WxDD63quyk8/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/ylVWSenTtOw/w-d-xo.html We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the power of swinging on a circle through a seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum". Great video, Tom! I am making better contact with the ball, than ever before. However, as I have been trying to just focus on using the shoulders to bring the club back, I am beginning to pull the ball. Not starting right with a draw - Definitely starting left of the target line…
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's important to know why the ball is behaving a particular way in order to reverse engineer the cause. The ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. So in the case of a pull, the face is closed to the target line at impact. There are various possible causes for this, including the face being too shut at address, a grip that is too strong, a ball position that is too far forward, a downswing path that is approaching the ball from the outside, flipping/rolling the hands through the zone and more. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first three possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. For example, a golfer may have previously deployed a closed clubface at address and/or a strong grip to compensate for a slice due to a steep downswing path. If the path has been corrected, then these same conditions can certainly result in pulled shots. I hope that helps! Tom, I have a slight inside takeaway and it causes an OTT loop in my swing. I can hit the shanks from this pattern too. My goal for the winter was to try and get the clubhead outside the hands at takeaway - even though it doesn't feel good.
It's all a matter of *_how_* you are taking it inside. The swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders. As such, if we are going to remain on that circle/arc it requires the hands and club to take a slightly inward path - not a disconnected handsy snatch or roll to the inside as many amateurs do - just a natural tracing of the outer rim or circumference. The feeling of "straight back" can easily pull the golfer off of that preestablished geometry right from the start, and from there precise compensatory actions are necessary if there is any hope of returning the clubface to the ball on the proper path time after time. All I am doing is taking the club back on the inside, following that path with arms gorilla glued, nice and easy, weight forward, newly used death grip, and that taped up plastivmc ball goes about 90ish feet to the backyard fence line (a few over) with that $4 sam Sneads Wilson club I got from goodwill. Fun as hell, great shots, been hitting that power fade too. Also can draw tge ball around a tree back tgere too. Easy swings, terrible club, but the contact is definitely there. A few months of that, and when I get home, GOD help all my friends thinking I will be rusty as hell. I'm swing smoothe and confident. Thank you Tom
Following on from our conversation yesterday (your replies and thoughts very much appreciated by the way), the other great thing about the tip that breaks all the traditional rules is that you can use it for each club in the bag! For a myriad worrier like myself with a million swing thoughts and tweaks (completely killing consistency and enjoyment), I now have one swing thought for EVERY club in bag barring putter and it feels amazing! No more worry, way more enjoyment, I am now only working on my course management to get my scores down for ever. Rounds in the 80's as opposed to late 90's is just way better! Keep breaking the norm Tom, golf needs you
Great stuff, Simon, and yes - one of the many awesome things about this swing system is its seamless applicability to all clubs with just those minor setup modifications (primarily stance width and ball position) as we move through the bag. Thanks again for sharing your improvement and enjoyment, and keep up the fabulous work! Tom PS: I appreciate your kind words regarding my replies here. Just as an FYI, as I roll out my new online school platform and its robust members' community forum the lion's share of my personal engagement will migrate to that theater. While I will still endeavor to maintain some presence here, it will be more aimed at pointing folks towards the school where so many thousands from all corners of the globe and spanning all age ranges and talent levels are now experiencing the best golf of their lives.
I’m glad this lesson resonated with you! And yes - it absolutely does engage the hips and shoulders down immediately and gets them working on their proper planes. Thanks for your message! Tom
Buddy! EVERY TIME I start working on the club working down the target line instead of inside, it leads to disastrous results. I am currently recovering from this exact situation as I thought I would fix my “inside takeaway” for the winter. I have gotten myself into a terrible spot. I would even say that if you go inside and a little over the top, but still approach from the inside, it really doesn’t matter. Anyway, back to getting out of my terrible pattern and will accept my inside takeaway. :-)
Hey Russell - nice to hear from you!! Yes - as long as your "inside takeaway" is not a handsy snatch or roll - and you are maintaining your relationship with the ball - then embrace it. Of all people, I know that *_YOU_* have got this and will have a productive winter working on it!! 💪💪 Tom PS: I'm very close to having the online school exactly where I want it, and as such I will likely be making myself available for private in-person instruction again in the near future. If you and your buddies are heading back to the Myrtle Beach area this winter/spring, be sure to let me know in advance if you would like a pre-season tune-up session to get you dialed in for dominance in 2024!
Hey Tom. The more of you I watch the more I realize that your approach to the golf swing is correct. So here is my question based on this video and your recent "hips are the enemy" video- is it correct to swing back and in on an arc using my shoulders to lead the way? That is, do the shoulders start the swing and the hips then get pulled along rather than the hips actively turning at the same time the shoulders start?
I appreciate that, Bob! With regard to initiating the swing, what you must understand is that I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the motion wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions and ball striking results. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. So the short answer is "yes" - while not the only way to "feel" it, it is perfectly appropriate for the shoulders to drive the swing and take the hips with them, and a proper setup will free up the hips so they can be supportive of a restriction-free motion. My issue with inside take way and weight forward is that I end up throwing big over draws. Any fix for this? Do I need to clear my hips more and finish low and left?
But here's the thing: This is not a "flat" swing. If we keep ourselves centered and allow the lead shoulder to work downward (the "tilt" component), then the arms will naturally elevate without the need for any independent lifting action. This will prevent the club from getting "stuck" too far behind us - as can happen with a shoulder turn that is too flat and/or if we snatch or roll the club to the inside with the hands - and instead we will have the lead arm in a great position to transition into the optimal downswing path (which, by the way, is the exact same path we would be trying to somehow consistently manufacture if we were going to "drop it in the slot" with a two-plane "shift & lift" motion). Good video. Hogan ,Moe Norman and Knudsen all considered top ball strikers do this. Try taking it back “straight” pretending the ball is tee’d chest high. Virtually impossible. What helps is swinging it back, when I take it back, my hands will not stay quiet, they start to place the club in positions instead of letting the club find them. Straight back ,even JT is an illusion when you compare them against people who.s hands take over and pull it inside.

100% out and away creates a disconnect with the body which as to be corrected at some pint in the Swing... Ben Hogan stressed keeping arms close to the body with elbows in and take the club inside. you can't rotate fully in my opinion with a straight back path... Another Top Video.....
Thanks again, Jerry! Indeed, taking it straight back is a disconnecting move that puts the hands and club in the "Zone of Uncertainty". They don't know what to do from there. Do they crash straight back down in an effort to hit at the ball? Do they drop down and try to find that perfect "slot" each and every swing? Do they get stuck behind us by overcompensating? In other words, we disrupt the natural geometry of the swing when we force the club out and up - or, conversely, snatch/roll it to the inside - thereby taking it off the plane of the inclined circle that was preset at address. Instead, why not just put them in the "slot" to begin with and preset the ideal downswing path before it even happens?! Tom
Interesting idea 💡 your swing looks great and the strike sounds pure I think many people get the hands IN part wrong They go hands OUT club-head OUT you have to get the body turning earlier in order to create space to take it back correctly on plane, cement torsos lead to the horrible too outside takeaway I think it’s worth noting if you hinge your wrists earlier the club will a appear to move more straight back/behind, a delayed wrist set can make it look a little out and I think this is why so many pros have it slightly out look ,but the hands always move IN due to a good early body turn Personally I always have to work on getting the body turning earlier and ‘feeling’ like I’m a little inside to achieve on plane, if I feel I take it straight back I’m way outside 😂 I think it relates to flexibility and talent DJ can take it way outside because his flexibility and big turn allow him lots of time to shallow it back on plane in transition, me for example I can’t afford to do that I don’t but myself enough time to shallow it so I would be steep and across with DJs takeaway, I’ve heard tour players talking about moving their takeaways more inside as they age, ideally they want to take the club back out to under like a baseball athlete and shallow the bat, same with Tennis athlete out to under but this requires a good transition to allow the club time to fall under. This may provide more power taking advantage of gravity and momentum but arguably harder to time and be as consistent Check out Hale Irwin’s swing he’s way inside and was a master of coming back over it right on plane
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, Roy, and I appreciate your detailed and validating remarks!! Yes - there can be different "looks" depending on how soon a player begins to hinge the wrists, but if you draw the lines you'll notice that even DJ is taking it back on an inside track. I've spent the last 10 years unlearning that "outside the hands" takeaway which I was taught through years of lessons at GolfTEC. Thousands of range balls and countless rounds since, and I've finally come to a point where that outside takeaway isn't my natural swing and the 'inside' movement feels right instead. Handicap went from a 15 to a 7
Fabulous job figuring that out and conquering those "ghosts of swings past", Steve!! 💪💪 Yes - unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant. Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness…. Thanks for validating this lesson with your personal experience and success, and keep up the great work!! Hi Tom, Your videos are by far my favorite to watch on you tube. Do you recommend any particular swing aid such as the straight stick, lagshot, or the impact device that you had on your right hand in the impact video....I would like to purchase just one of those at this time.
I sincerely appreciate your kind words and support, Eric, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! With regard to the training aids, there is quite a bit of overlap in terms of the swing issues they resolve, so you really can't go wrong with any of them. I will say however that if I had one to choose at this moment, considering that the moment of impact is where the rubber meets the road I'd probably lean towards the Precision Impact. You can get it here - pureswingproducts.com/SagutoGolf - and using discount code CRISPYKFC will get you $30 Off and Free Shipping through today - 12/5/23). Tom
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Ryan! Actually, if you draw the lines you'll notice that both DJ and Rahm take it back on an inward path. Here are some lessons related to this: - th-cam.com/video/LgYdC-g8DAY/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/1gzcyrJ_yBw/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/WxDD63quyk8/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/ylVWSenTtOw/w-d-xo.html We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the power of swinging on a circle through a seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum". only damn right tom,,it taken me over a year to work the natural swing plane back in gradually ,once i`d realized from your other videos there is no `straight back` in any decent takeaway ,its all curves seconds of arc ,and tangents👍🤔
Yes! Although it doesn't have to be nearly as complicated as the trigonometry you're quoting.... 😆 We've already preset the tilted swing circle at address. Our mission is simply not to fight it! TS

Great stuff. When I swing my shoulders I sometimes still come over the top. To stop this I have been thinking of pulling my left should back to start the downswing. Is this a problem?

Good timing on this, I’ve been seeing ads for some kind of David Ledbetter take away tool that makes you take the club head back in a straight line. Seems like that would be a bad idea.
I've not tried any such device, although if it truly encourages a straight back move in the takeaway then that would not be consistent with the swing system I teach. We always need to be careful when navigating the muddied, overly-complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. It's best to commit to a system - whether it be this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance method or another - put our blinders on, and stick to it! I'm glad to know that this was a timely episode for you! TS
@@SagutoGolf Edit: The name of the tool is "Straightaway". Turns out he does tell people that the clubhead and handle come in and not on a straight line. But it's not easy to find. The images of a line behind the ball and the name of the device will confuse people, people will need to watch his instructional video clearly.
It's fine for the clubhead to stay outside the hands while still taking this inside track. The bird's eye view in this lesson video from my channel's archives may further clarify and show how "hands in/club out" and the inward path are definitely not mutually exclusive: th-cam.com/video/WxDD63quyk8/w-d-xo.html Tom
Tom, I'm a member of your school and follow your videos and have improved my golf. And now play between the seven and eight handicap. This video however seems to contradict other teachings where you talk about having the hands in and the club face out and in front of your body. Specifically your February 20th, 2021 and your April 4th 2022 videos speak of hands-in club out. Eventually of course the club head has to get behind the hands in the backswing, but at the P2 position, my understanding is the club head should be slightly outside of the hands with both the hands and the club head moving in from the address position. Can you comment on that?
I'm very glad to learn of your improvement, Gerard!! As a school member you are in possession of the sequential blueprint and should not be concerning yourself with this public forum to such an extent. The lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of the online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it makes for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my TH-cam content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. So, rather than monitoring this channel and doing deep dives into its plethora of content in search of perceived inconsistencies, if something arises that causes you confusion then please utilize the members community resource in the school to post your question. Thanks and keep up the great work! Tom
By all means. go with what works best for you. I will say, however, that it's all a matter of how you take it inside. @@SagutoGolf makes sense. Maybe I come in too inside or don't turn my shoulders far enough and or wrong. I've had a few lessons and no one has picked up on it
I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, Jose! The difference between the two swings @2:15, to me, appear nearly identical. To wit, if you were to take both those videos, side-by-side, and change nothing but the apparel you were wearing, I would likely be accurate 50% of the time, if you asked me to pick. Which is to say, I would be just guessing.
@@SagutoGolfOK, maybe, but that wasn't the point. Despite your description, given a sample of a random set of 100 swings where some were "straight back" versus "inside takeaway", I'd likely only correctly identify either one ~50% of the time. To wit, they're nearly identical, and that's just you. That wouldn't include other golfers making similar claims about their swings that I'd likely not detect correctly either. What you say, what you feel, and what actually happens can vary greatly even amongst the pros or "experts".
I also noticed that comparison video at the end. The right one the shaft was definitely crawling up the forearm as well. I assume you recommend that too right? I needed this video cause the takeaway has always been the main issue for me and taking it more inside and up let's me get back in the slot better
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and I hope it performs well when you put it into practice! This is a one-plane motion, meaning that there is no independent, disconnected lifting of the arms and hands as you would see in a two-plane move (there's no need to "drop it in the slot" if you've already put it there). Instead, if we retain our connections, keep ourselves centered, and allow the lead shoulder to work downward (the "tilt" component), then the arms will naturally elevate without the need for any independent lifting action. This will prevent the club from getting "stuck" too far behind us - as can happen with a shoulder turn that is too flat and/or if we snatch or roll the club to the inside with the hands - and instead we will have the lead arm in a great position to transition into an ideal downswing path. In fact, pay close attention while you watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Have fun out there working this into your swing!

She also is acutely familiar with the mathematical relationship expressed as follows:
Happy Golf = Happy Husband
Happy Husband = Happy Life

I have never been so thrilled. My son who hasn't been able to play much due to Uni, has been shanking badly every time we went to course and range. I hit the range today after watching this video yesterday. I'm in New York so it's cold. I was hitting the ball a touch further but the flight from the compression was insane. The ball was hopping off the face in the cold with less effort through my swing. I can't wait to continue working on this!

A friend referred me to watch you and here's my story:
I grew up in the 70s, with the straight back takeaway and was a 3 handicap.

Have you developed right knee issues with this method?
I am just getting back into golf after a hiatus of about 10 years. I wasn’t very good even at my best then. Now, after about a week I am striking the ball much better and hitting it straighter and longer than ever before. I am following your advice and it’s working. Of course after only a week I still hit bad shots but I am getting more consistent.
A guy on the range must have seen one of my bad one’s and came over to share his advice. His advice you got to get your club much higher. Don’t take it around your body. Lift it higher.
I laughed inside and thanked him so he’d go away and continue to practice based on your instruction.
LOL! The well-intentioned swing wreckers are always lurking out there, just waiting for the opportunity to strike...😆
Anyway, welcome back to this greatest of games! I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into practice.

Thank you!

Tom
Thanks.

Tom
By the way, given your hip issues, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. I totally agree with you on your premise Tom! Since I started swinging on an incline circle which in turn produces an arc type swing, I have being getting more "ZIP" out of my shots! 👍🏼⛳️
I sincerely appreciate your kind words and professional validation, Kevin, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!!
To your point, I do try my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.
Thank you again - I'm very glad to know that this video helped you to get beyond that misguided "straight back" notion!

Inside takeaway is definitely where it's at. The golf swing is on an arc and the club really has more pop to it when it goes inside versus straight back. Like you also said, easier on the body too. Glad you're bringing awareness of this highly overlooked concept. Hit em good and merry Christmas!

Honestly "inside takeaway" seems like it actually keeps the clubhead outside my hands...it feels like it's inside but think about it...I'd your hands are going behind your hip right away, how could the club possibly be massively inside that...this video fixed so many faults of mine...hands in=good
@johnsmith42688 definitely agree. Feel vs real are entirely two different things

While there are certainly other videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

My pleasure, Randy! And yes - unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎
Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of modern “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). With regard to those struggles, it can help to remember that the swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders.
Here are some lessons related to this:

We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the power of swinging on a circle through a seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum".

I sincerely appreciate that, Marcus, and thanks so much for sharing your personal experience and further validating this point!!

Tom, I’ve started doing this over the past month after watching some of you videos and I am have gotten good and consistent results. It has certainly stopped my swaying back at the start of the backswing. I’m still having an issue with starting the downswing with my hands, but even that is far less frequent.

I'm very glad to know that this lesson enabled you to "liberate" your swing!
The issue you were experiencing perfectly conveys the problem with trying to incorporate another golfer's swing keys, and it is precisely why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and results. This is why I routinely recommend the online school - saguto.golf - to anyone who truly wishes to experience the joys of consistent, powerful, body-friendly ball striking bliss. The sequential lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.

STRAIGHT BACK = DEATH
Did it for 40 years.
Tom
Totally agree. I hit it straight by straight take away but lacking power. By taking it inside, my trail shoulder is more involved and connected.

Great vid as usual Tom! I’d like your opinion on David Leadbetter’s “Straight - Away” Takeaway please 😊

Here are some lessons related to this:
- th-cam.com/video/LgYdC-g8DAY/w-d-xo.html
- th-cam.com/video/1gzcyrJ_yBw/w-d-xo.html
- th-cam.com/video/WxDD63quyk8/w-d-xo.html
- th-cam.com/video/ylVWSenTtOw/w-d-xo.html
We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the power of swinging on a circle through a seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum".

We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the power of swinging on a circle through a seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum".

Awesome!! And I'm very glad to know that you are having fun and making the best with what you've got.
Keep up the great work!!

Tom
PS: I appreciate your kind words regarding my replies here.
Great takeaway tips

Can totally relate. It helps so much also to create the early feeling of creating (hip) room for the swing back
I’m glad this lesson resonated with you!
And yes - it absolutely does engage the hips and shoulders down immediately and gets them working on their proper planes.
Thanks for your message!

Tom
PS: I'm very close to having the online school exactly where I want it, and as such I will likely be making myself available for private in-person instruction again in the near future.

Tom
Interesting idea 💡 your swing looks great and the strike sounds pure
I think many people get the hands IN part wrong
They go hands OUT club-head OUT you have to get the body turning earlier in order to create space to take it back correctly on plane, cement torsos lead to the horrible too outside takeaway
I think it’s worth noting if you hinge your wrists earlier the club will a appear to move more straight back/behind, a delayed wrist set can make it look a little out and I think this is why so many pros have it slightly out look ,but the hands always move IN due to a good early body turn
Personally I always have to work on getting the body turning earlier and ‘feeling’ like I’m a little inside to achieve on plane, if I feel I take it straight back I’m way outside 😂
I think it relates to flexibility and talent DJ can take it way outside because his flexibility and big turn allow him lots of time to shallow it back on plane in transition, me for example I can’t afford to do that I don’t but myself enough time to shallow it so I would be steep and across with DJs takeaway,
I’ve heard tour players talking about moving their takeaways more inside as they age,
ideally they want to take the club back out to under like a baseball athlete and shallow the bat, same with Tennis athlete out to under but this requires a good transition to allow the club time to fall under. This may provide more power taking advantage of gravity and momentum but arguably harder to time and be as consistent
Check out Hale Irwin’s swing he’s way inside and was a master of coming back over it right on plane

Yes - unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant. Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100.

Actually, if you draw the lines you'll notice that both DJ and Rahm take it back on an inward path. The swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders.
I saw a clip of Tiger teaching Charlie to keep the club head out so I have been trying to keep it out. Inside feels more natural.
It's fine for the clubhead to stay outside the hands while still taking this inside track. The bird's eye view in this lesson video from my channel's archives may further clarify and show how "hands in/club out" and the inward path are definitely not mutually exclusive: th-cam.com/video/WxDD63quyk8/w-d-xo.html

I have tried the inside takeaway for a year now and I have alot more success with out to in I feel freer and less trapped
By all means. go with what works best for you.
I will say, however, that it's all a matter of how you take it inside. To wit, if you were to take both those videos, side-by-side, and change nothing but the apparel you were wearing, I would likely be accurate 50% of the time, if you asked me to pick.
Which is to say, I would be just guessing.
Arm position above the shoulder line and hands high on the left. Arm position on the shoulder plane and hands deep on the right.

Jackie Burke talked about an in-and-up backswing.
Thanks - I appreciate your validating this with a tip from one of the game's greats, and may Mr. Burke rest in peace.

Tom, have you done any videos on posture? Where you bend from, knee flex, etc...
He has. Just search Saguto Golf Posture 👍

Saguto, what specifically is stopping you from entering the next PGA Tour Monday qualifier, entering the tournament, and maybe getting a top 20 finish?
Probably that KFC endorsement deal I've been waiting on for like 5 years...... 😎
Thanks - I appreciate that!
