Would you like to move to Belize? If so, you might have a lot of questions about life there. What is life like for expats in this small country?
In this LIOS Podcast, Kathleen and Lief will answer just that.
While Belize offers many upsides for expats, no place is perfect. For Kathleen and Lief, these are some quirks and downsides of Belize:
    • Minor language barriers due to the creole spoken by Belizeans
    • Asking for directions might be confusing
    • Infrastructure
    • Car ownership
    • Import duties
    • Real estate
    • Health care

Exactamente. I from just north of Black Wall Street, on a farm between Bartlesville and Nowata, Oklahoma. Di way we call out landmarks here is exactly like we called out landmarks in OK when I was a kid (I almost have 60 years now). John Dean's Hill, Wickam's Corner, etc., etc. We live here full time since Jan 2006; the first 15 months we lived wid no doors, tho dat not di plan. One ting learned is dat doors mek wi lazy.😁

      • Today I have something very important to tell you
      • God is justice, He is just and does not rejoice in injustice, sin is injustice and God hates. We are all sinners and the destiny of sinners is hell.
      • But, God with his immense love, gave his only begotten son Jesus Christ, to come into the world, to be like a human being, to suffer and die for humanity to forgive our sins.
      • So that we can now have a second chance to be reconciled to God and be saved through Jesus Christ, who gave his life for us because he loves us.
      • Jesus loves me, Jesus loves you, Jesus loves all mankind, that's why He died on that cross for us, He is risen and can save you from eternal damnation and provide you with eternal salvation. Jesus will return to seek the saved, the Church.
      • We can confess our sins to Him, because He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all injustice.
      • For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
      • Jesus loves you, and Jesus wants to save you, you can be saved! Believe in Him and obey His word.
      God bless you! 💓

We bought a condo just north of San Pedro town and thoroughly enjoy the lifestyle. At present we would be classified as snow birds. Where we are the internet is good as the island has fiber optic connection. The big factor on reliable connection is the number of people sharing the line to the development. We have the option of a private line and may explore getting this. The primary mode of transport is golf cars. Very few cars and trucks and they are primarily used by government or business. Food and accommodation is probably the most expensive on the island compared to the rest of Belize but the atmosphere here makes up for it. The town has everything you need.

Greetings from Consejo Village, Corozal! I have lived in Belize full time for almost 19 years with my sweet hubby who I married 34 years ago on a $50 USD bet. I enjoy listening to videos about Belize from the perspectives of different people, expat realtors included, because it give me fresh eye. We no know our own area like di person who first experience it .This is a fascinating video. Minute 8:09, I do beg to disagree wid you. A car on the mainland is not needed, but it is very appreciated. In 2010 when my hubby and daughter both sick in States and I moving expats for room and board along di the MX Coastal Route, there was an issue wid our truck so I let it rest for 10 months and took public transport ahn free drops. The public transport is still what I prefer when I want to network and meet people. There is an excellent a/c bus from Morales, an express bus that leaves Coro to BC early business days and of course, there is the Florencia lines that includes USB chargers (locked bathroom); however I find the non a/c chicken busses the best place to meet people on my excursions especially to Belmopan and back. Thanks for posting this video and I'll stay tuned in.

You don’t need a car in Belize. We lived in Dangriga for 3yrs without a car. We biked and used the public buses to travel all over the country. We lived on 500US a month from 2017-2019 in Dangriga. Live like a local as much as possible and you can live cheap. Our 1bedroom apartment was 125US a month. Immigration fees doubled in 2020 and have remained high. Also this video didn’t mention the rough and rude treatment by Immigration officials at all of their offices throughout the country.

Indirect directions. Love that! I was walking around Belize City outside of the cruise port a couple of years ago and asked directions from a local and that was exactly how he described the way!😀 . So we thanked him and walked around the corner and headed back to the port. I didn’t want to look stupid by asking what??? So I thanked him and went on my way and that was ok too.

    Nonsense about the paint story.
For directions its not "go like this"...e "you go so".
For a vehicle do not import, buy local, get a 4 cyl, 4 wheel drive not necessary for most, an suv or 4 door pickup good and with propane ideal. Good value around 10k to 15k BZ. Lots of good local.selection.
Come as a visitor, apply for residency after one year and rent until you are sure of the area ypu want to live in. Take a few years and get to know things. Beautiful furnished homes less than $1,000 BZ per month on mainland.
Healtcare dont get hurt dont get sick and learn local remedies.

I am rather surprised, with the conference being virtual, and more and more people working remotely these days, that there is no mention of internet... speed, costs etc.. I love the residency options, (It's becoming difficult in Asia with so many borders being closed) but the speed and quality of internet can make or break a destination for remote workers.

People have a misconception about retiring in Belize on Social Security. Even though its in Central America, Belize is not a good option, if you only have Social Security. A better option is Nicaragua or Panama. The two big attraction in moving to Belize, are the beaches, and the fact that they speak English.

I have been to Belize and to the Cayo District. It is important to discuss the crime there. The mainland of Belize has one of the highest homicide rates in Latin America, with it only being lower this year due to COVID, but typically hovering around 37 murders per 100,000, which is almost 7 times the murder rate in the US. We were warned not to even stand out in front of the international airport in Belize City during daylight hours by our hosts. We stayed with a local family there, and were told by the wife that she would not go into town at night by herself due to the real fear of being raped. The local men were constantly cat calling the women in our group whenever we went through town, even if the women were just traveling in a car through town.
That being said, Belize is a beautiful country and I enjoyed my time there, which included doing mission work, snorkeling, and spending time on Caye Caulker.
I also toured a hospital when I was there with others, and the hospital was very old, with little recent medical equipment and run down with clearly not the level of sanitary standards in the US.

As a woman traveling alone throughout Belize, I felt very safe and respected. If you go to a place with fear in your eyes expecting to be a victim, you will be. I walked with confidence through Belize City and nobody bothered me. I did receive plenty of compliments from men but I get those in every country, including the U.S. As for healthcare, we Americans run to the doctor for every health issue that WE cause with our horrible lifestyle & diet. Don't eat crap, walk a little bit, and don't stress over every single thing. Then you won't need 5 state of the art hospitals in every city. Medical care in the US is a big profit machine but it's not like that in Belize.

I just returned last week from my 5th trip to Belize. Each time I've been there, I've visited both the mainland (as far west as San Ignacio) and several of the Cayes. Not once have I ever experienced a woman I was with, having to endure any sort of cat calling or other type of harassment. I've never experienced any crime or was made to feel unsafe anywhere. With that said, I also avoided specific places in Orange Walk and Belize City the same way I'd avoid McHenry St in West Baltimore. Not much to see there anyway. Women should not go anywhere alone but as far as I am concerned, that is just good advice for all of Central and South America. If a female is with a man, she will be left alone 99% of the time. I'm tempted to say 100% but there is always an exception. Just like anywhere else, if you conduct yourself properly, do not enter bad neighborhoods and stay aware of your surroundings, you will most likely never experience any crime or harassment in Belize outside of the occasional pushy street vendor who won't take "no" for an answer and that is also rare. At least from my experience.

As someone who is considering moving abroad, I have been pondering the ethics of moving from an affluent country to a less affluent country, and the privilege I'm bringing with me. I wonder if the shoe were on the other foot, now that we are in a global economy and people are able to invest in buying land in other countries, granted we must take into account the history of colonialism and all its negatives, are we not to allow anyone from any other country to buy land anywhere? If there is a Belizean who is financially able to buy land and a home in Ireland, Thailand, Ghana, the U.S., or any other country as an expat, would we say the Belizean should only rent from locals? Or does this only go one way? Because the expat we are envisioning is of the rich, white variety? Is that what makes owning land in Belize problematic? Are the Mennonites looked upon unfavorably for their land ownership? Is it any different if we just look at it as someone who is immigrating? Which is basically the same thing as being expatriated from your country. If someone is wanting to immigrate to another country and live there, should we not support their right to house and land ownership to put down roots and make a home? This all has been weighing on me, because I am feeling more and more ready to leave the U.S., and I know when I do, I will be respectful of the culture I will be assimilating to, but I do have ethical concerns about buying property and possibly starting a business in a country that has had a history of colonialism and how to navigate that.
