Thank you Will! I considered Belize, but retired in Panamá last year instead. What I appreciated was the relevance of your video to my own decision as well. In terms of “adapting to the culture” and “avoiding the negativity” of the expats, these two go hand in hand I think. Why move to a foreign country only to hang out with other expats? That makes no sense to me. One of my native Panamanian friends said it best, “they come here to bitch about the United States, and six months later, they’re bitching about Panama too!” Some people just carry that negative energy with them wherever they go!
Let me educate everyone about beautiful believe. In the video it only shows Spanish looking belizeans. The culture is mixed with beautiful dark people who are belizean. Belize is a beautiful place depending on where you go. They have San Pedro Belize look up different locations. When you are going to a whole different place like Belize just go for yourself and enjoy everyone and he his right don’t be disrespectful don’t bring that American attitude to and a good vibe island. And have you ever thought because you are impatient being in Belize is teaching you patience. Patience will always save you. Many people are investing in Belize. I have many family out there that owns plenty of properties and land and building out there. Go to Belize it’s worth it! ❤
I was on San Pedro & ya gotta have island time except when you go on a day trip to one of those ruins I had a blast there lobster fest was the 1st time having lobster pizza
As in ANY foreign country, assimilation is key. I've been living in Mexico for almost 3 years now, with my Mexican wife. Patience is a virtue, enjoy it. Don't try to make your new home into your old one! VIVA MEXICO 🇲🇽
I use to teach Peace Corps volunteers ( 3 months intensive language & cross cultural training ) to help with adjustment in a foreign country. You are essentially doing that in the video & hope your message reaches the right folks . It goes without saying for any traveler regardless of your origin ….. try to adapt/ relax/ learn/ embrace the changes you face . It takes patience but once you understand the situation you will be fine.
Being born and raised in Belize i love this video because he's absolutely right and especially now with the current prime minister, inflation and cost of living its very difficult but as a visitor ita great....

Where you live is very different from the rest of Belize. When I lived there I was in what was considered one of the "better" towns, it was unbearably hot, I was bitten all over by those invisible bugs, the beach was filled with sand fleas, and there was actually not much to do. Getting what one might consider simple things we're used to was challenging. Before visiting yes, definitely find out if your expectations match the reality.
For retirement specifically, it is quite difficult to believe that most people can live their whole lives in one country and then adapt well to a different culture, climate, etc. I would never consider moving permanently to another country without an extended period of residency on a visa, say 6-12 months. The only way to know what it’s going to be like to live there is to live there.
Bought our condos in San Pedro in 2012, after a decade of looking all over Central and South America. Zero regrets; the friendliness of the Belizean people is unmatched. Will’s videos are excellent & as accurate as any I’ve seen.
I was an American advier to to the belizian military. Many of the other advisors hate duty there because of the reasons you stated. They couldn’t get over the do it tomorrow attitude to include the belizian military. I loved the people and the country. Best duty ever, my take away from my time there was this. Please realize that you need to adapt to the culture don’t expect the culture to change for you.

Most people (especially here in USA) would fare much better in life, and be a whole lot happier… if they would simply learn to be patient, be kind, and be compassionate.
Good information ! I'd say most of it applies to anyone leaving a big city for a small one. Also common sense and good manners are a necessity that sadly too many people do not possess. 😉
I saw another video on the same subject of expecting things to work as quickly as in one's home country (USA, Canada, Europe, etc.) and they said the same thing - you have to be patient. I am surprised that someone hasn't started a business for expats where the service is provided on a very quick, timely manner, but at a higher price than the competition.
@user-um7tw6kx4r6 The locals are not the problem or the ones who are stressed about getting things done quickly - it is the American, Canadian and Europeans who are living in Belize who get frustrated with the plumber / carpenter coming by when they feel like it instead of at a designated time. This is a business opportunity for a Belizian or someone else living there to operate a business that does set and show up at a set time and charges more for this.
After 13 years of owning property there, I would say this video is pretty accurate, but I left in disgust because of the crooks in government, law, utilities, real estate, insurance, construction, the list goes on. The common citizen there is usually a good person. There are PLENTY of better alternatives.
Personal safety and crime were not mentioned. Yes the citizens are great BUT whoever has the power of an important yes or no--watch out. Also UNSOLVED MURDERS?
Agree with you on the patience aspect. I do feel like their is a fine line between patience and someone just lacking responsibility. After living in Belize I have found it easy to gently remind folks a few times without ever getting angry and then asking them, especially for bigger projects, “do you have a date in mind that we could both agree on when this could be done?” Then at least you can hold builders etc responsible, since sometimes you’ll just be waiting forever thinking you’re being patient when in fact they just forgot about you. Regarding patience in food ordering and stuff like that, totally agree. Just relax you’ll get it. Sometimes it’s also about who you know. Want a passport quickly? Better know someone.
Excellent Video. Very realistic! Thank you for giving valuable information for those who are looking to move to Belize. I am a Native Hawaiian born and raised in Hawaii and I moved to Mexico just a little over a year ago. Even though Hawaii is Governed by the United States, we have our own culture, heritage and language. With that said, I did not have major culture shock when I moved to Mexico which made my transition must easier. The Hawaiian culture is very similar to the Mexican Culture. Anyway, your video is spot on and helpful for those moving from Canada and the U.S. Continent.
Can you describe or interview people who needed to get medical treatment outside of Belize? Especially older people. Young folks like Will can afford risks that older people can't even if they are in overall good health.
My father, Ruben Ricketts, left his home in Belize, 1940s, and emigrated to Edinburgh, Scotland. He was among the men who were invited to go the UK by the UK government to take up employment and fill the job vacancies after WWII ended. He married my Mum, a Scottish lady, and together, they had four children, of which I am one.
I appreciate this other side and being authentic about what some people may not enjoy. 6 reasons to not enjoy…but millions of reasons why to live there.
Hey Will, lets remind potential buyers, the Belize dollar has historically demonstrated relative stability compared to most of the Caribbean, Central America and South America, which has experienced more volatility. This stability can provide confidence and predictability for both buyers and sellers. If you're selling real estate in Belize and receiving payment in Belize dollars, the favorable exchange rates between the Belize dollar and other currencies can potentially attract international buyers. We have property down in Belize and have been traveling there extensively for over 10-years. The amount of progress has been amazing in just that little bit of time, but the people don't seem to change. It is too bad that commercial property speculators and crooks have cast a dark shadow on Belize's Global image - especially down in Stann Creek/Placencia region. One phrase that we adhere to is "If you have patience - you will lose it - if you don't have patience - you will find it - down in Belzie" : )
People that want to move to places like Belize and the Caribbean do not really want to move to these places. They think they are paradises because they have been marketed as paradise locations. What people really want is a nice secluded homestead away from other people in their home country. For example if you are from Canada what you really want is one of those posh tiny homes away from city where you can still get all of the conveniences that you are accustomed to. This is why when these people move to Belize and the Caribbean they move right back in 1 to 2 years. It takes a person with a certain personality to enjoy places like the Caribbean, Belize, and Costa Rica and most of those people do not reside in America, and Canada.
As an immigrant to the US myself I have already made a huge cultural shift in my life - (Americans for some reason think they're a kind of default and are often surprised by this( - ive travelled a lot: to get respect one has to give it and sometimes my fellow Americans act like jerks and are then surprised when other folk - gasp! shock! - amazement - do the same!!!. Give respect to get respect....look for the positive....eventually make. pros AND negative list: biasing oneself is like forgetting important lessons or skills....Don't.....
As a sailor on a private sailboat we were in Belize for a couple of wèeks. We're told to be very cautious if going beyond far into the jungle of whited as a few have been killed there. Not sure of the reason. Did not get a friendly feeling from locals. Some sailors had equipment stolen of their boats also. We then went onto Rio DeLuca in Guatemala which was great.
Just stumbled across your video. I don't know how. I vacationed on the island of Abergris Cay back in the 90's. Stayed in a grass-thatched hut that was actually built over the water. It's where I developed my desire to scuba dive. I went snorkeling and down below saw a scuba group skimming the bottom. After that I knew I was going to have to do it myself. Anyway, I ate a lot of conch dishes while there and loved the place! Even though I am considerably older now, I'm sure I'd still love it. Before Ambergris Cay, we spent time on the mainland at a jungle resort. We traveled by boat through a mangrove swamp and emerged on a very large body of water. We put the boat ashore at a location where we walked on a path through the jungle while monkeys in overhead branches scream at us. I seem to remember them throwing . . . well, something. Fortunately they didn't have good aim. At the end of the path was large mayan? / aztec? pyramid, which of course we climbed. (Probably couldn't do that now.) Anyway, Belize was one of my most unforgettable vacations. Now that you've brought all those memories back, maybe I'll see you there soon! :-)
I fell in love with Belize the moment the plane landed. 1st time we were in San Pedro. 2nd visit we were in Placencia. Next round is most likely Hopkins. Made some decent connections to look at some property. (my 5 year plan) Love the people. Love the culture mix. Love the food. Can't wait to go back.
Good video. He mentioned the good and not so good. Here's the bad and the ugly. The bad is the roads. The excuse you will hear is, "they're dirt". Well, dirt roads in other places are smooth, plus vehicles have supension. The problem is the potholes combined with golf carts with no suspension! This will absolutely challenge you, and might deter you from driving at all- it did me. Many long-timers had back problems?? Sure you can buy a 25K recreational 4 wheeler, but then the salt eats it up 🤷🏻♂️ The ugly is Sargasso Grass. It gets worse and longer every year. So bad on the ocean side I moved to the Lagoon side. Then they started dumping it over there and there was no escape. I smelled it in my sleep. You start thinking I'll just leave for two months. The icing on the ugly is the monthly immigration fee. It's double now-$100. US, which to me is ridiculously high and says, they really don't want you there. Sure get your residence to get around that. Lastly is the so called Secret Beach. It's a long drive out there on those golf carts and roads I mentioned earlier. And once there, it's a little over hyped and over priced. Sure, tables out in shallow water is fun, for a visit. Drive that that road twice a week and you'll be done- I was. All your stores are in town. Did I mention Secret Beach is all off-grid? Solar, catch water/tanks, etc, which I actually liked. You might not, and definitely should be on that list. If I went back, would consider the mainland instead. ✌🏼😎
English speaking, safety, barrier reef, the people and much more. Really depends on your objectives. If specialty healthcare is a big need I would go for Mexico but Belize offers an array of advantages to many.
I have heard this,as well. That the crime, robbery and murder is rampant. To top it off the authorities aren't much help. Street justice is a problem with people living in the shadows.
@@1233-h1 street justice solves some problems too... knew a group in guatemala who got away with murder, caught with the camaras and laptops... the judge was afraid of her family getting hit, the mob took care of it, rumer was they didn't want the u.s. comimg down...
Good advice. Take a least a one week vacation there to know the thrill of having someone break in to your condo at about 1am to rifle through all the stuff you aren't sleeping with. I know, it's a cultural understanding thing. The person that squeezed in through the window knew where the "hidden" safe over the kitchen sink was because they opened that right up. Thankfully, I wasn't dumb enough to put anything in there. All important and expensive stuff was in bed with me. Belize tourist tip: Beach towels and souvenirs (even if you over paid for them), those, you don't have to sleep with. The burglar isn't interested in those and will just set them aside. Thankfully, we didn't have anything stolen. The condo company just had to deal with fixing the window. Formed my own conclusion. I would go back but there is no way I would relocate there.
I lived there 25 years -- how many people have someone else build a secret compartment -- Answer -- too many. I traveled all over Central America by chicken bus -- always kept valuables to a minimum - slept with my passports and money...in a money belt -- kept small funds in pocket when out and about -- Oh, and no drunken loudness with your new best friend.
I moved to Corozal, Belize, with my Cuban wife and my two daughters, then aged 3 and 5. I am French, and we all have Spanish passports. There is no Spanish or French community where we live, but a big US/Canadian. Since my two daughters had to go to school, we could make friends and participate in all kinds of activities. Being in Belize with a family is a very different experience compared to coming to retire. We have no plans to leave...
Visited twice just before retiring. Loved it. Could have gladly retired there. But with grandchildren life changed. Too distant for regular visits on our income or the kids. If you can make it work it is paradise. Full stop.

Many cultures deal with time differently and it does take an adjustment. I'm an expat in Indonesia and they have the same idea about time as is described in this blog. I already knew this when I came here because I lived in SE Asia from the 1950s -to 1970s. The thing that I don't understand about the time issue is this; time is the one thing you can't get back, so it's the most valuable thing that you have. How people can be so laissez-faire about wasting it is difficult to understand. I don't have an issue with them wasting their own time but I consider it disrespectful when they waste mine. I've developed several ways to cope with it.
Cruising on my sailboat, I have lived from months to years in 18 different countries. Where ever ex-pats go, especially Americans, we are experts at driving prices up. And up. And so does crime. Don’t believe me. go to the American Virgins and then the British Virgins. Stay a good while in each and see the difference. I have watched towns like San Carlos, Mexico, on the Sea of Cortez go from a nice little tourist town to an expensive, over prices Gringoville. Same with Cabe san Lucas even worse and yeah, lots of rising crime too. Areas on the Dominican Republic same way. No one can drive up prices and crime like us Americans. One of the biggest issues is when we start buying and running businesses. Bad for the local economy and primarily just benefits the business owner. We don’t just want to live there and enjoy it, we want to colonize it. Good bye paradise.
As small as Belize is, the regions there are very different. Ambergris is not Cayo is not Placencia is( fortunately) not Belize city. Adjustments need to be made depending on which edge you might choose to settle.
Fascinating video! I was fascinated by the use of the word expats. Why are Americans, who to go Belize, called expats.When folks from Belize, and other countries go to America, are called immigrants? Aren't they the same?
There is NO Walmart in South/Central America…. To get the “cheap” products from China, they get brought to South/Central America NOT one cargo ship at a time, but one shipping container at a time, on a cargo ship that is making lots of stops instead of one (like the three Walmart owned cargo ships that just go back and forth between China and the West Coast of the United States). This is why the coffee pots, toasters, and clothing tops you buy at Walmart for $12 to $35 all cost over $50 equivalent anywhere between the Rio Grand and cape Horn…. I was discussing this with a lawyer from Argentina, each year he flies to Los Angeles to visit relatives, while there he buys everything the family in Argentina needs for the year (he gets shopping lists from them before going on the trip). Most people in Latin America don’t have someone to do their shopping for them in the states to bring home, and even if they do it means they go without certain things until the annual shopping trip is done and the item is brought back. Imagine your coffee pot breaks and you have to go without for the next eight months….. Each time I fly to South America I see people from where I’m going to checking in five to ten bags a piece at the airline. The above reason is generally why, they did shopping for the family….. or they retired from their job and are going home for good and won’t be able to go back and forth a lot.
I would say You are not a local you have big things going on for you in belize 🇧🇿 way more than the average people most people leaving for better life only sad things less after making it big go back and invest in infrastructure

Is there a way to be matched to a company that can handle all the required steps? My wife and I are going SOMEWHERE, but don’t want to wander thre through the process. I lived in Asia and Germany [two tours] for a total of more than eight years. I understand life will change wherever we go, but that we can adapt to the country. We’re looking at Costa Rica, but Belize may be acceptable. If we look at six people’s videos, we get six opinions but no updated facts.
I discovered Belize (San Pedro mostly) in mid 70's and fell in love with it and the people. It was my special place to get away from the rat race called America. Of course Belize has changed a lot, and I haven't been back for years. But I still miss the island and the friends I made there. Very special friends that will always remain in my heart.
Not all products that are imported are more expensive in Belize since most products are made in China, Belize has many Chinese Vendors that imports directly from China which avoids the high US taxes and handling cost thereby making these items cheaper in Belize.
I have read the number 1 thing that sends "gringos" back home from anywhere in Central America is the unrelenting heat and humidity. Every day is the same and I am used to minus 20 F winters and 4 seasons so I have crossed most of this area off y retirement list.
I noticed that people in the hospitality and service industries of Belize act like they are doing you a favor and/or when you ask them for something or information.
Will, how do folks over 60 fit into the picture? Presumably we don't have the luxury of living far from infrastructure and conveniences, especially medical services, which would limit us to Belize City, even if we were to only be in Belize during the cooler months. Have you done any videos about this? And is the weather from April to October like living in a sauna? Plus, as I understand it, the QRP is not accessible unless you have an actual pension, so could you discuss the alternatives even for people of independent means? Thanks!
You do not have to limit yourself to Belize City, which is the least desirable location in Belize to live for expats. San Pedro/Ambergris Caye, Corozal (close to Mexico i.e. advanced healthcare), Placencia (hotter and more humid) and San Ignacio are great places to live. All have a large expat population. Corozal is in northern Belize and is drier than the other locations. The farther up and into the mountains you get, the cooler it is and less mosquitoes (I hear, but haven't been yet). If you have ever been to Florida or the interior of Georgia, that's just a hint of how hot and humid it can get in the summer months. The islands are sunny, hot and humid, but you do have a constant breeze which helps keep mosquitoes away. You really need to visit several places here before you decide. We have land on the Corozal Bay near Sarteneja, boat access only for now. We're almost 60 and hope we can move and build while we're still mobile and healthy. Looking at a 4-5 year window.
@@samsmom1491 I was amazed that the government charges every tourist $100 a month to be in the country. Plus the QRP is not available to anyone of independent means unless they have an actual government or private monthly pension. Neither makes any sense. Corozal looks very nice, but I'd. probably die from boredom before the lack of medical services!!
@@dovygoodguy1296 San Pedro/Ambergris Caye is improving day-by-day and a medical center is either being built or has been built, as well as cars being allowed. I've only been there twice as I prefer the slower pace of Caye Caulker, where golf carts, bicycles and feet are the things to get you around.
People here in the states always tell me how patient/calm I've been when waiting in line, waiting for a return phone call, whatever waiting I am doing. I then respond that I live in Belize and they laugh. It's just a way of life living in many Central and South American countries. I now live in Colombia and it's worst, and the customer service "lets not talk about that" Jajajajajajajaja.....Well I still love Belize and Colombia. All the waiting is making me stronger, lol.
I have been there a couple times. The place I stayed in was truly paradise. I understand it's suspended reality. I did not wander around Amberghris so I have no idea what the life, culture, and people are really like. I have wondered about it as it seems absolutely incredible from a very privileged visitor standpoint. Again, understanding that is not the "reality" of life on Amberghris, but wow is it beautiful. Everyone regardless of rich or poor lives in paradise there.
almost all things are what you make of them. I grew up on large ranch on indian reservation in middle of nowhere, there were alot of great things about it, but city people had very hard time here.
Hi. I'm moving to Belize. I'm starting a business there. I'm a member of the diaspora, I wasn't born there, but my parents and grandparents were. Is there a way for me to move my personal belongings in, without having to pay import tax? I know they have a diaspora program but my mom doesn't have her Belizean ID and she doesn't plan to get one until after I already move.

Where you live is very different from the rest of Belize. When I lived there I was in what was considered one of the "better" towns, it was unbearably hot, I was bitten all over by those invisible bugs, the beach was filled with sand fleas, and there was actually not much to do. Getting what one might consider simple things we're used to was challenging. Before visiting yes, definitely find out if your expectations match the reality.
For retirement specifically, it is quite difficult to believe that most people can live their whole lives in one country and then adapt well to a different culture, climate, etc. I would never consider moving permanently to another country without an extended period of residency on a visa, say 6-12 months. The only way to know what it’s going to be like to live there is to live there.

Bought our condos in San Pedro in 2012, after a decade of looking all over Central and South America. Zero regrets; the friendliness of the Belizean people is unmatched. Will’s videos are excellent & as accurate as any I’ve seen.

I was an American advier to to the belizian military. Many of the other advisors hate duty there because of the reasons you stated. They couldn’t get over the do it tomorrow attitude to include the belizian military. I loved the people and the country. Best duty ever, my take away from my time there was this. Please realize that you need to adapt to the culture don’t expect the culture to change for you.

I saw another video on the same subject of expecting things to work as quickly as in one's home country (USA, Canada, Europe, etc.) and they said the same thing - you have to be patient. I am surprised that someone hasn't started a business for expats where the service is provided on a very quick, timely manner, but at a higher price than the competition.
because if locals want to be stressed they'll just go to the USA or something, where everything has to be super fast and you can't take a break
@user-um7tw6kx4r6 The locals are not the problem or the ones who are stressed about getting things done quickly - it is the American, Canadian and Europeans who are living in Belize who get frustrated with the plumber / carpenter coming by when they feel like it instead of at a designated time. This is a business opportunity for a Belizian or someone else living there to operate a business that does set and show up at a set time and charges more for this.

After 13 years of owning property there, I would say this video is pretty accurate, but I left in disgust because of the crooks in government, law, utilities, real estate, insurance, construction, the list goes on. The common citizen there is usually a good person.
There are PLENTY of better alternatives.

Agree with you on the patience aspect. I do feel like their is a fine line between patience and someone just lacking responsibility. After living in Belize I have found it easy to gently remind folks a few times without ever getting angry and then asking them, especially for bigger projects, “do you have a date in mind that we could both agree on when this could be done?” Then at least you can hold builders etc responsible, since sometimes you’ll just be waiting forever thinking you’re being patient when in fact they just forgot about you.
Regarding patience in food ordering and stuff like that, totally agree. Just relax you’ll get it.
Sometimes it’s also about who you know. Want a passport quickly? Better know someone.

I am a Native Hawaiian born and raised in Hawaii and I moved to Mexico just a little over a year ago. Even though Hawaii is Governed by the United States, we have our own culture, heritage and language. With that said, I did not have major culture shock when I moved to Mexico which made my transition must easier. The Hawaiian culture is very similar to the Mexican Culture. Anyway, your video is spot on and helpful for those moving from Canada and the U.S. Continent.

We have property down in Belize and have been traveling there extensively for over 10-years. The amount of progress has been amazing in just that little bit of time, but the people don't seem to change. It is too bad that commercial property speculators and crooks have cast a dark shadow on Belize's Global image - especially down in Stann Creek/Placencia region. One phrase that we adhere to is "If you have patience - you will lose it - if you don't have patience - you will find it - down in Belzie" : )

Gas price
People that want to move to places like Belize and the Caribbean do not really want to move to these places. They think they are paradises because they have been marketed as paradise locations. What people really want is a nice secluded homestead away from other people in their home country. For example if you are from Canada what you really want is one of those posh tiny homes away from city where you can still get all of the conveniences that you are accustomed to. This is why when these people move to Belize and the Caribbean they move right back in 1 to 2 years. It takes a person with a certain personality to enjoy places like the Caribbean, Belize, and Costa Rica and most of those people do not reside in America, and Canada.

As an immigrant to the US myself I have already made a huge cultural shift in my life - (Americans for some reason think they're a kind of default and are often surprised by this( - ive travelled a lot: to get respect one has to give it and sometimes my fellow Americans act like jerks and are then surprised when other folk - gasp! shock! - amazement - do the same!!!. Give respect to get respect....look for the positive....eventually make. pros AND negative list: biasing oneself is like forgetting important lessons or skills....Don't.....
As a sailor on a private sailboat we were in Belize for a couple of wèeks. We're told to be very cautious if going beyond far into the jungle of whited as a few have been killed there. Not sure of the reason. Did not get a friendly feeling from locals. Some sailors had equipment stolen of their boats also. We then went onto Rio DeLuca in Guatemala which was great.
Good choice, Guatemala is way cheaper too and much more choices to pick from.
Just stumbled across your video. I don't know how. I vacationed on the island of Abergris Cay back in the 90's. Stayed in a grass-thatched hut that was actually built over the water. It's where I developed my desire to scuba dive. I went snorkeling and down below saw a scuba group skimming the bottom. After that I knew I was going to have to do it myself. Anyway, I ate a lot of conch dishes while there and loved the place! Even though I am considerably older now, I'm sure I'd still love it. Before Ambergris Cay, we spent time on the mainland at a jungle resort. We traveled by boat through a mangrove swamp and emerged on a very large body of water. We put the boat ashore at a location where we walked on a path through the jungle while monkeys in overhead branches scream at us. I seem to remember them throwing . . . well, something. Fortunately they didn't have good aim. At the end of the path was large mayan? / aztec? pyramid, which of course we climbed. (Probably couldn't do that now.) Anyway, Belize was one of my most unforgettable vacations. Now that you've brought all those memories back, maybe I'll see you there soon! :-)
I fell in love with Belize the moment the plane landed. 1st time we were in San Pedro. 2nd visit we were in Placencia. Next round is most likely Hopkins. Made some decent connections to look at some property. (my 5 year plan) Love the people. Love the culture mix. Love the food. Can't wait to go back.

Good video. He mentioned the good and not so good. Here's the bad and the ugly.
The bad is the roads. The excuse you will hear is, "they're dirt". Well, dirt roads in other places are smooth, plus vehicles have supension. The problem is the potholes combined with golf carts with no suspension! This will absolutely challenge you, and might deter you from driving at all- it did me.

Sure you can buy a 25K recreational 4 wheeler, but then the salt eats it up 🤷🏻♂️
The ugly is Sargasso Grass. It gets worse and longer every year. So bad on the ocean side I moved to the Lagoon side. Then they started dumping it over there and there was no escape. I smelled it in my sleep. You start thinking I'll just leave for two months.
The icing on the ugly is the monthly immigration fee. It's double now-$100. US, which to me is ridiculously high and says, they really don't want you there. Sure get your residence to get around that. Lastly is the so called Secret Beach. It's a long drive out there on those golf carts and roads I mentioned earlier. And once there, it's a little over hyped and over priced. Sure, tables out in shallow water is fun, for a visit. Drive that that road twice a week and you'll be done- I was. All your stores are in town. Did I mention Secret Beach is all off-grid?
Solar, catch water/tanks, etc, which I actually liked. You might not, and definitely should be on that list.
If I went back, would consider the mainland instead. ✌🏼😎

Just curious. Why did you choose Belize over Mexico?
English speaking, safety, barrier reef, the people and much more. Really depends on your objectives. If specialty healthcare is a big need I would go for Mexico but Belize offers an array of advantages to many.
Lived in belize... was lucky to get out... lived on a sailboat they tryed to conficate... the violance and crime is through the roof...

Good advice. Take a least a one week vacation there to know the thrill of having someone break in to your condo at about 1am to rifle through all the stuff you aren't sleeping with.
I know, it's a cultural understanding thing.
The person that squeezed in through the window knew where the "hidden" safe over the kitchen sink was because they opened that right up. Thankfully, I wasn't dumb enough to put anything in there. All important and expensive stuff was in bed with me.
Belize tourist tip: Beach towels and souvenirs (even if you over paid for them), those, you don't have to sleep with. The burglar isn't interested in those and will just set them aside. Thankfully, we didn't have anything stolen. The condo company just had to deal with fixing the window.
Formed my own conclusion. I would go back but there is no way I would relocate there.

I lived there 25 years -- how many people have someone else build a secret compartment -- Answer -- too many.
I traveled all over Central America by chicken bus -- always kept valuables to a minimum - slept with my passports and money...in a money belt -- kept small funds in pocket when out and about -- Oh, and no drunken loudness with your new best friend.
I moved to Corozal, Belize, with my Cuban wife and my two daughters, then aged 3 and 5. I am French, and we all have Spanish passports. There is no Spanish or French community where we live, but a big US/Canadian. Since my two daughters had to go to school, we could make friends and participate in all kinds of activities. Being in Belize with a family is a very different experience compared to coming to retire. We have no plans to leave...
Visited twice just before retiring. Loved it. Could have gladly retired there. But with grandchildren life changed. Too distant for regular visits on our income or the kids. If you can make it work it is paradise. Full stop.

Many cultures deal with time differently and it does take an adjustment. I'm an expat in Indonesia and they have the same idea about time as is described in this blog. I already knew this when I came here because I lived in SE Asia from the 1950s -to 1970s. The thing that I don't understand about the time issue is this; time is the one thing you can't get back, so it's the most valuable thing that you have. How people can be so laissez-faire about wasting it is difficult to understand. I don't have an issue with them wasting their own time but I consider it disrespectful when they waste mine. I've developed several ways to cope with it.

Cruising on my sailboat, I have lived from months to years in 18 different countries. Where ever ex-pats go, especially Americans, we are experts at driving prices up. And up. And so does crime. Don’t believe me. go to the American Virgins and then the British Virgins. Stay a good while in each and see the difference. I have watched towns like San Carlos, Mexico, on the Sea of Cortez go from a nice little tourist town to an expensive, over prices Gringoville. Same with Cabe san Lucas even worse and yeah, lots of rising crime too. Areas on the Dominican Republic same way. No one can drive up prices and crime like us Americans.
One of the biggest issues is when we start buying and running businesses. Bad for the local economy and primarily just benefits the business owner. We don’t just want to live there and enjoy it, we want to colonize it. Good bye paradise.

As small as Belize is, the regions there are very different. Ambergris is not Cayo is not Placencia is( fortunately) not Belize city. Adjustments need to be made depending on which edge you might choose to settle.

Fascinating video! I was fascinated by the use of the word expats. Why are Americans, who to go Belize, called expats.When folks from Belize, and other countries go to America, are called immigrants? Aren't they the same?
Expats live in a different country but don't pursue citizenship
There is NO Walmart in South/Central America…. To get the “cheap” products from China, they get brought to South/Central America NOT one cargo ship at a time, but one shipping container at a time, on a cargo ship that is making lots of stops instead of one (like the three Walmart owned cargo ships that just go back and forth between China and the West Coast of the United States). This is why the coffee pots, toasters, and clothing tops you buy at Walmart for $12 to $35 all cost over $50 equivalent anywhere between the Rio Grand and cape Horn…. I was discussing this with a lawyer from Argentina, each year he flies to Los Angeles to visit relatives, while there he buys everything the family in Argentina needs for the year (he gets shopping lists from them before going on the trip). Most people in Latin America don’t have someone to do their shopping for them in the states to bring home, and even if they do it means they go without certain things until the annual shopping trip is done and the item is brought back. Imagine your coffee pot breaks and you have to go without for the next eight months…..
Each time I fly to South America I see people from where I’m going to checking in five to ten bags a piece at the airline. The above reason is generally why, they did shopping for the family….. or they retired from their job and are going home for good and won’t be able to go back and forth a lot.

Is there a way to be matched to a company that can handle all the required steps? My wife and I are going SOMEWHERE, but don’t want to wander thre through the process. I lived in Asia and Germany [two tours] for a total of more than eight years. I understand life will change wherever we go, but that we can adapt to the country. I discovered Belize (San Pedro mostly) in mid 70's and fell in love with it and the people. It was my special place to get away from the rat race called America. Of course Belize has changed a lot, and I haven't been back for years. But I still miss the island and the friends I made there. Very special friends that will always remain in my heart.

Not all products that are imported are more expensive in Belize since most products are made in China, Belize has many Chinese Vendors that imports directly from China which avoids the high US taxes and handling cost thereby making these items cheaper in Belize.
I have read the number 1 thing that sends "gringos" back home from anywhere in Central America is the unrelenting heat and humidity. Every day is the same and I am used to minus 20 F winters and 4 seasons so I have crossed most of this area off y retirement list.
I noticed that people in the hospitality and service industries of Belize act like they are doing you a favor and/or when you ask them for something or information.
That happens here in America often 😢

Presumably we don't have the luxury of living far from infrastructure and conveniences, especially medical services, which would limit us to Belize City, even if we were to only be in Belize during the cooler months. Have you done any videos about this? And is the weather from April to October like living in a sauna? You do not have to limit yourself to Belize City, which is the least desirable location in Belize to live for expats. San Pedro/Ambergris Caye, Corozal (close to Mexico i.e. advanced healthcare), Placencia (hotter and more humid) and San Ignacio are great places to live. All have a large expat population. Corozal is in northern Belize and is drier than the other locations. The farther up and into the mountains you get, the cooler it is and less mosquitoes (I hear, but haven't been yet). If you have ever been to Florida or the interior of Georgia, that's just a hint of how hot and humid it can get in the summer months. The islands are sunny, hot and humid, but you do have a constant breeze which helps keep mosquitoes away. You really need to visit several places here before you decide. We have land on the Corozal Bay near Sarteneja, boat access only for now. We're almost 60 and hope we can move and build while we're still mobile and healthy. Looking at a 4-5 year window.

@@samsmom1491 I was amazed that the government charges every tourist $100 a month to be in the country. Plus the QRP is not available to anyone of independent means unless they have an actual government or private monthly pension. Neither makes any sense. Corozal looks very nice, but I'd. probably die from boredom before the lack of medical services!!
@@dovygoodguy1296 San Pedro/Ambergris Caye is improving day-by-day and a medical center is either being built or has been built, as well as cars being allowed. I've only been there twice as I prefer the slower pace of Caye Caulker, where golf carts, bicycles and feet are the things to get you around.
People here in the states always tell me how patient/calm I've been when waiting in line, waiting for a return phone call, whatever waiting I am doing. I then respond that I live in Belize and they laugh. It's just a way of life living in many Central and South American countries. I now live in Colombia and it's worst, and the customer service "lets not talk about that" Jajajajajajajaja.....Well I still love Belize and Colombia. All the waiting is making me stronger, lol.
Patience is really an acquired skill hahaha

I have been there a couple times. The place I stayed in was truly paradise. I understand it's suspended reality. I did not wander around Amberghris so I have no idea what the life, culture, and people are really like. I have wondered about it as it seems absolutely incredible from a very privileged visitor standpoint. Again, understanding that is not the "reality" of life on Amberghris, but wow is it beautiful. Everyone regardless of rich or poor lives in paradise there.

almost all things are what you make of them. I grew up on large ranch on indian reservation in middle of nowhere, there were alot of great things about it, but city people had very hard time here.

Hi. I'm moving to Belize. I'm starting a business there. I'm a member of the diaspora, I wasn't born there, but my parents and grandparents were. Is there a way for me to move my personal belongings in, without having to pay import tax? I know they have a diaspora program but my mom doesn't have her Belizean ID and she doesn't plan to get one until after I already move.
