In this video DidYouKnowGaming takes a look at anti-piracy measures in several Nintendo 64 titles, such as Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, and the N64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Special thanks to all the data miners and curious individuals who researched these anti-piracy measures on TCRF and beyond, including Jrra, Ferrox, and RyanDwyer.

Another crazy anti-piracy measure/s is from Spyro. TechRules did a video on it and the game mostly just trolls you for pirating the game. Check it out because he did an entire playthrough with an uncracked copy just to show how Insomniac went crazy with that game.

They really went crazy with Banjo-Kazooie. Remember Grunty's Code Vengeance where if you input too many illegal cheats then your save data gets wiped? What was the point of even adding in a cheat system if your going to punish the players that badly for using something the developers made?

@@hentaidude666 i mean this was 1998 we're talking about here. While the internet was around you didn't have things like TH-cam or well known gaming websites. You either had gaming magazines that had the codes or had to go by word of mouth with your friends who also owned the game. Sometimes you even went with trial and error and write down your codes on a torn piece of paper and keep it with the game in it's box for sake keeping.
For us who were young at the time if we played a game, inputted a few cheat codes and were told "hey do that one more time and all your save data gets wiped" you either had the cautious ones and stopped or the ones who didn't believe and did it anyways only to come back and find everything is now gone as it said it would happen.
The developers might have found it "funny" in punishing someone for playing a single player game but it's really not.

You know, this episode makes me wonder if the copy of Shrek 2 for the Gamecube I owned as a kid was pirated... When I was a kid, I didn't like salmon, so my mom said she'd buy me a copy of Shrek 2 for Gamecube if I ate salmon at my Granny and Grandpa's house. I ate it and the next day we got a used copy from EB Games. The reason I think it might have been pirated is there's this outer-castle stage where once I reached a certain point where you were supposed to enter the castle, the game wouldn't allow me to progress. I couldn't restart the chapter, I couldn't switch teammates to make it through. Reading gaming magazines, I'm apparently the only person who had this issue.

I first started watching DYKG back in the normal boots days. I loved it. I fell out for a while but picked back up about 2 years ago. It was a bit of an adjustment because the older videos were game specific and there are some videos pile that still but they are fewer but once I got over the difference, I wholeheartedly still enjoy the content. Keep it up! Maybe add in game specific videos but I still like the way the content is going!

No anti piracy measure compares to UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late[cl-r].
The stuff you see is straight out of a creepypasta story and so spine chilling that I won't blame any pirates to buy a legit copy after seeing it.

I've learned more about my favorite games and different things about them, like hidden codes or even something as simple how the game operates with anti-piracy in place. You guys make it interesting and fun. Especially with your guest appearances, like the completionist or Matpat to name a few. You guys are awesome and I hope you guys find more fun facts to show us as newer games come out or newer consoles

I got a copy of Banjo Tooie that periodically deletes one of my savefiles. I had always assumed the previous owner had done some sort of hacking that triggered this as a defense measure. I was still able to beat the game by continuously copying to other savefiles as backup, but it was a constant threat that the next time I'd boot it up, the file I'd been using could be gone before I had a chance to copy it.

I find it funny that all these n64 games have anti piracy measures, which emulation COMPLETELY circumvents. It's hilarious to me.

  • @rtyuik7

(pausing at about 0:45, so my apologies if this topic is covered better in the video): in my early days of emulating games, i was pretty convinced that one of Zelda:OoT's "pirated proofs" was in the Fishing Pond...of course, in a normal, legit game, you can go fishing for two prizes-- a Heart Piece as a child, and the Golden Scale as an adult...however, on the emulator i was playing on back then, it seemed like i could NEVER get the record-breaking fish to bite, let alone be successfully caught...but then again, considering how Little youd lose from the game (the Child's Heart Piece, as well as the Heart Piece from diving to the bottom of the Lakeside Lab with the Golden Scale), maybe it was just bad RNG...

If by some miracle you guys see this and could answer 2 things, you'd make my year. 1: What happened with the Pokemon Grey video that you had been working on, is that still happening? 2: Would you guys ever do more on the history and trivia of emulation over the years? I really think that would make great content and videos about the emulators aren't covered very well.. Anyway, Awesome stuff guys, thanks for everything!

  • @IceColdPistol

Channel is awesome, and content is always a joy to watch. Only thing I could think of to make the videos better would be adding timestamps to skip intros and possibly ads, because sometimes I don't have too much free time but still wanna watch your vids, and skipping through intros is a tad annoying. Other than that, A+ all around!

    • @gamingnubs7628
      @gamingnubs7628 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Im pretty sure most advertisers dont allow timestamps for skipping. They have to inspect the video to make sure the product is shown in the way it was intended, therefore you couldnt put timestamps.

With the way TH-cam handles ads it would probably just play them each time you jump ahead.
The bigger issue is getting people to watch the whole video for the engagement. TH-cam tracts how many people watch the entire video and all that sorta stuff.

    Since you asked…
I like this channel. It’s a good mix of education and entertainment.
That said, I often am focused on either entertainment (Scott the Woz, Outside Xtra, AVGN) or education (Gaming Historian, Summoning Salt, Karl Jobst).
I also feel sometimes the video titles/subjects kind of blend together, to the point I’m not certain what I have/haven’t watched.

I remember the things that occurred in Zelda. Back then I thought, crappy emulation was at fault. In order to handle the impassable bars, I left and reentered the scene, and then they would disappear. However by doing so, the timer would run out, so I used game genie codes to boost the time.

I still to this day think that if a game company is successfully sued for some kind of wrongdoing, one of the punishments that should readily be used being loss of the privilege of using anti-piracy for some amount of time. The company would have to release all current code, so all current methods they're using can be circumvented, and new games would not be allowed to have ANY anti-piracy measures included for X time.
(This should have been inflicted on Nintendo as punishment for their anti-competitive response to try and snuff out game rentals, for example.)

Diddy Kong Racing also seems to have an additional measure.
It's possible I'm wrong about why this happens, but here goes:
Everything plays normally until you reach Wizpig.
No matter what, Wizpig always remains ahead of you. Making the race impossible.
