    Thank you for defending our Ecuadorian ceviche, you were fair and impartial, they are two different ceviches, they only resemble each other in name

      I'm not going to lie, Andres and I have joked several times that I should make a video to say why Ecuador has the best ceviche because I'd be flooded with haters 🤣 You know the funny thing is that I watched this video about a very compelling theory that ceviche is from Manabi, hence "iche" but that's opening a can of worms. I really love how food is similar but different across regions and it often appeared before we had country lines on a map. So why do we need to argue?

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I compare Esmeraldas as the same safety level of Guayaquil because you need to know where to go and where not to go. To say you can go everywhere and do everything is irresponsible. Several locals warned us about Tonsupa at night as we were there. And before we arrived Andres, who is Ecuadorian, said he didn't want to be out at night. As I mentioned if you're staying in the resort area obviously there's more people around and it's safer. But we were at the local end of the beach where it was not safe to be out.

      I completely agree with Mompiche. I have a video coming up about it and Isla Portete. However, Mompiche is southern Esmeraldas. The province is big and from north to south is a different situation. Tonsupa we had no issues during the day, but the far end toward Atacames where we stayed was not safe at night.
      When we had the earthquake that night and most people headed for the hills people quickly returned and sat outside their homes because they remembered the last time in 2016 people came in and looted everything while they were going for higher ground.
      I want people to come here and have a great time. I loved where I stayed and would recommend it. But unless you're looking to party they have everything you need within the grounds. There were Quitenos there along with us and they also stayed in.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ecuadorians along the coast can swim but a lot of people who vacation here are from Quito and aren't the strongest swimmers. So if you have young kids they can play at the base of the water but the waves are probably too high to go out farther. A lot of places along the coast have pools, which I thought was strange initially because who wants a pool when you have the ocean. Later on we stopped in Puerto Lopez and I noticed the lifeguard at the beach wouldn't even allow adults past their chest in the water.

      Our goals for what we want to share is the same. That people should come to Ecuador and enjoy it. In 2010 I backpacked overland for two years solo from Mexico to Argentina. I write about travel on my website and share it on this channel. My goal is to share that Latin America isn't scary. Since then I've been back to Ecuador 5 times and this visit has been 8 months shooting over 100 videos to encourage people to come here.
      But if you spent 2 months in Esmeraldas you know that there are areas you should not be in and risks you should not take. When I announced I was going to do a series there people, mostly Ecuadorians, were really worried for me. But these videos are to show people you can come here, have a good time and not worry about your safety if you are smart. Because right now there's a state of exception and people think the entire province is unsafe, which is not true.
      The point at which we disagree is saying you can go anywhere in Ecuador and you'll be safe. I'm happy you haven't had any issues. But there is a reason why I only feature some places in Guayaquil, and only visited Zaruma in the El Oro province, that I tell people not to walk to Panecillo in Quito. And let people know when they need to get a cab vs walking. These are practices that Ecuadorians follow, advice I get from locals.

    Is Esmeraldas really an option for expats? Are prices for houses or condos better there then, compared like Manta?
    Is it not safe after dark? Or why?

    We know you put in extra effort to upload a text file transcript, so TH-cam can not only display subtitles correctly, however also offer to translate into different languages. We continue to appreciate your efforts, and can relate to the time to put this together. If you or another South American TH-camr go the "Auto-Translate" route, (No text file upload), how difficult would you rate this on a scale of 1 to 10?

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the auto translate button as I think TH-cam does a pretty good job at it. Not perfect but pretty good
      But I don't find their auto transcription good. It's easy to do but not good.
      Or maybe I don't speak clearly enough. It also doesnt get Spanish words correctly like names of towns or foods. Quito is keto and Cuenca is Cwanka. So spending the time to get the original transcription right also helps English speakers who may be seeing words for the first time like encebollado and making the connection between how the word is spelled and pronounced. I try to put the names of food on the right in text so people become more familiar with them.
      I actually always watch Netflix with subtitles on even when it's in English. I don't know why. But I do see in my analytics a lot of people also use English subtitles.

      @@ayngelina Wow! What an outstanding, and well explained answer! Yes, we noticed a few quirks like this on the last Q&A video. They were very minor, and it was at times funny to see how they'd translated a simple "Um" comment. It is 100% better than nothing, and kept us very engaged watching it a 2nd time. Please allow us to confirm your English pronunciation is nothing short of fantasticly clear! We love your thoughtfullnes in helping even English speakers with genuine tongue twisters like encebollado, and of course Quito vs Keto, Cuenca vs Cwanka. Phonetically, it's right, but we both know how confusing this could be. We can only imagine how they'd spell Guayaquil. We too watch Netflix with subtitles, however take it a step further. If the English content doesn't offer Spanish audio or subtitles, we simply don't add it to our playlist. We do the same thing with TH-cam. There's so much to watch.
      Thanks for playing the long game, and being so considerate of your viewers.
      You clearly are a key role model for how to build a community of loyal viewers, and we hope you inspire others to follow your lead.

    I believe they chopped trees down to make way for property developments. Not sure whether that was Tonsupa or Atacames. I'd love to know experiences of retirees, such as cost of living, HOA expenses, transport connections, availability of chicken or turkey meat(I'm not particularly a fish fan), what the quality of eggs is like in the Tia supermarket, whether the prodigious rainfall hinders daily life, and noise and crime levels.

    The private sector has invested in Tonsupa millions of dollars, in real state.
    The public sector unfortunately has done nothing for Tonsupa. The terrible state of the streets is evident. This situation has last for around 50 years. The Majors of Atacames, who are in charge of Tonsupa, one after a other, have done nothing, them have gone rich although.
    Tonsupa has the highest rates in municipal taxes, electrical bill and water bill.

      Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.
      In Esmeraldas things are made a bit differently with lots of flavour using sofrito. A lot of dishes have a deep red flavour, which could be the difference.
      Interesting about the bolon, that was why I hated Bolon de Tere so much... It was just a mash with no textural difference. Well that and the price!
      Although the only other place on the coast I've seen it unfried like that was Puerto Lopez otherwise every other bolon has been deep fried or pan fried.
      But the best bolon is coming Wednesday and it has shrimp in it!

    Your North American attitude that the world is a dangerous place is disturbing ... and certainly doesn't do justice to such lovely places and cultures.
    Maybe just go, enjoy, and show the beauty ... and keep your own personal worries to yourself. They aren't that accurate and promote fear mongering.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dennis I'm guessing you haven't watched many of my videos. The purpose of this Esmeraldas series is to show people that while many people don't come to this Province for its perceived danger. That the issues its having with crime is limited to specific areas and that similarly to Guayaquil, if you know where to go and where not to go you'll have issues.
      I have traveled solo throughout Latin America over the last 12 years so I have good perspective on the level of danger and risk. That said, this is a vlog. And most Ecuadorians and travelers avoid Esmeraldas because it has the highest levels of crime in the country and not all of it is safe. I'm traveling with an Ecuadorian who is also sharing their honest perspective as we explore this beautiful province.
      The funny thing is some people are giving me grief for promoting tourism here because they paint the whole province as crime ridden when it's not. And then you, without knowing my background or purpose, are slamming me for sharing my perspective.

    The CevICHE is actually originally from Ecuador, not from Peru! That has been demonstrated by the dozens of Ecuadorian words with the Sufix ICHE. For instance, dishes like CorvICHE, fruits like PechICHE and towns like MonpICHE. So sorry Peruvians, but you stole that word like you stole the Pisco.

      That is fine. I just do not like seeing a place like that labeled as dangerous. I would walk that at night alone before I would many areas of US cities. Business owners there are not going to allow people to be robbed and hurt their incomes. If the police do not handle things, the Ecuadorians' will often assure their own neighborhoods are crime free, and I really like that about them. Esmeraldas is probably only dangerous if you are involved with illegal activities.
