I'm glad someone is talking about this aspect of Smash more, it amazes me how characters like Ridley and Ice Climbers can be in the same game and not look too jarring next to each other
Great video, I'm surprised very few people have talked about it. One thing I'd like to add is that I feel like you could probably get away with moving Peach into the "full redesign tier". Her dress is definitely a big change but they also changed up her body proportions and she ends up looking a bit more realistic (or I guess barbie doll proportions). It's most easily noticed when you look at her face; she ends up having a bit of a more anime-ish style look with her bigger eyes and smaller head. Especially when compared to Daisy and Rosalina, who mostly retain their facial proportions from the Mario games, despite having more elegant dresses like Peach.
I feel like I'm the only one who sees Peach's face. I'm glad you brought that up! Her cheeks are more shown, her head is much more rounder than pointy like in Super Mario, and her pupils are much bigger, she also has rosy cheeks. I wish they just stuck Peach's Super Mario proportions to Smash proportions to keep it even with all the princesses.
Imo, Bayonetta definitely classifies as “Same Design in a New Artstyle”, because of the very drastic changes in anatomy. Bayonetta games have the characters with these really freakishly-long proportions, particularly the legs. You just need to put Bayonetta’s models from her games and from Smash side by side, adjust the heads to match in size and see the difference. (It’s almost like how the Minecraft and Smash Endermen are, lol.)

I think he looks fine now, but I could’ve gotten used to it after playing so much Project+. Still, I agree that Ultimate perfected the Smash art style.
Ok, I'm a big fan of the Super Mario series and never did I noticed how much detail they added to Peach's dress. I knew I liked that design more, but I couldn't figure out why
It’s by far *the* most notable in Brawl! Notably, the designers gave Peach heart-shaped imprints _and_ ribbons on her shoulder sleeves, and the front part of her ballgown has ruffles. I’m sad these smaller, unnecessary but touching details got cut in Sm4sh and subsequently Ultimate…
I just looked into it, and even though he has some original aspects, he seems to be heavily based on his "Star Fox Assault" appearance, with the blue jacket and massive shoulder pads. It is pretty heavily altered though, enough to at least bump it into minor or full redesign. Good catch though! Made me think!
I would count K. Rool in the completely new designs too, because... i mean look at him. They took some details like the darker green and the gold plate from his DKC appeareances, but also for example the slightly smaller crown from the later games, and also made him scaly.
Pit & Palutena both belong in the full redesign tier as of brawl and onwards, before 2006 their designs were more cartoony and basic until brawl however where both received an overhaul making them look more mainstream and zelda like
Her Smash appearance both in Melee and beyond would be sooo nice to see. Even though I adore her Brawl appearance the most I’d take any other outfit besides her plain dress we see her in the Mario series…

The Switch ditched Mii's as a system level thing, so Ultimate was under no real obligation to match some more general standard. Optimizing the designs for Smash when you don't have to worry about the Mii being a bit different from the start menu avatar makes sense.
Wolf does not belong in 'same design new artstyle.' That purple jacket + pink scarf fit he wears in Ultimate is not in any StarFox game he appears in. Even when you can only see up to his neck, you can tell the outfit is noticeably different, biggest giveaway being no pink&purple. Even in Brawl when his outfit was directly inspired off his Star Fox Assualt look, they still shook it up quite a bit. His jacket was unzipped, his belt became a gold wolf, the gloves and boots changed color and style, and he got new accessories.
I wish we had more official design notes about how characters designed for Smash, I'm really interested in knowing the thought process behind it. K.Rool's gold armored belly is more because of his renders and official artworks from Rareware DK games rather than being an original addition from Smash itself what Smash did add is him being a mix of both his old and new designs + tattered cape.
i find it interesting how pikachu is in the “unchanged” tier, while charizard is in the “new art style” tier. not saying that’s wrong, just interesting great video, super underrated channel!
@@connors_stories I think some of it is that Smash tends to go for more detail and texture as characters get bigger. Pikachu fits in just fine next to Kirby, Ice Climbers, and Ness. Charizard would look extremely out of place compared to the other heavy weights without some additional detail.

It I can recall Mega Man’s smash look went on to inspire his Mega Man 11 design. Smash 4 released WAY before Mega Man 11 was even a thing. And both of the designs look similar only Mega Man 11’s leans more as a mix of his Smash design and his Mega Man 7/8 design (with him looking slightly taller. Notice they both have slits and pads that were not in any other design beforehand). It’s REALLY cool how developers take Smash as a basis for newer games, I love it!!
Really hot take, but I definitely enjoy Brawl’s aesthetic the most out of the Smash games. Someone claimed Peach looks like a Barbie doll in Brawl, and while I can understand the sentiment, I feel ironically the exact opposite. I loved her redesign in Brawl, but feel that Ultimate leaned way too much into a toy-like aesthetic if that makes sense…?
3:08 I actually think this is more of a benefit than a drawback. The lack of scales and overtly monstrous textures make Jr. look a lot cuter and less intimidating than Bowser. They show that he hasn't been in as many battles, and as such, has to rely on the clown cart for intimidation.
Pac-Man's design was actually slightly changed for both Smash games. In Smash 4, his gloves were given visible seams, and his boots now had elevated heels as opposed to flat soles. These design details actually made their way outside of Smash, being present in Pac-Man's modern design in games like Pac-Man World Re-Pac. Smash Ultimate added extra detail to his soles and an extra "ring" around where his limbs connect to his body. These design details did not retain outside of Ultimate, though. With all that said Pac-Man's tier placement here is still fitting, since these are _incredibly_ minor details, especially after these design traits started being used outside of Smash. Also you got Steve's Minecraft and Smash textures mixed up. Also also, why is Dr. Mario in unchanged? He normally wears white pants, but in Smash specifically he wears black jeans.
Coward! Artists see the challenge Smash Peach presents and tackles it (and fails repeatedly) to get it right. Even going as far back as Melee, the way they interpreted her sash and made into a sort of corset or something of that nature is just perfection.
Ganondorf, Link and Zelda in Brawl feel like their models and textures were just ported straight over from Twiligh Princess (Sheik too although they weren't in TP) since the artstyle of that game is very similar, if not did it inspire Sakurai when making Brawl's artstyle.
Related to design, I think you could also make a video about what game each fighter Sakurai based them on. For example since her first appearance in smash, Rosalina is based on her appearance and personality from Super Mario Galaxy rather than the upbeat version she is portrayed in the current Mario games while Bowser and Donkey Kong act and sound like their real life counterparts (a gorilla and a dinosaur basically). Just a suggestion.
The funny thing with Rock (Mega Man) you could probably cell shade his Smash bros design, and it could possibly pass for something like his Gears of Fate (MM11) design.
Tbh, I LOVE ZELDA’S DESIGN FOR ULTIMATE! Now two of her past incarnations have been redesigned with more updated looks in the transitions from their source titles to Smash. I personally love Zelda’s Ocarina of Time appearance in Melee than I do in her looks in the actual game she appeared in. Her Twilight Princess appearance was my favorite for her time. Between her actual appearance and her appearance in Brawl, she looks alike in both, but Brawl gave her an amazing attention to detail. Smash kept up improving her appearance… until Smash 4… What happened here? Why does she look so serious? (Dark Knight reference here) Her Ultimate became my overall favorite! She’s more cheerful and spunky! I can see this Zelda appear in just about ANYTHING. I can see her for the next Mario Kart. I would love to see her fleshed out in a spinoff title eventually!
Also for peach, no one seems to think its as big a deal as i think it is, but peach/daisy has long ape arms. Its hard to tell but if you see her without the dress her arms are long as hell
I respect everyones opinions, and I definitely loved this video But I like brawls art style because smash 4's renders look like Plastic to me and ultimate looks slightly more shiny plastic
K rool had a golden belly I. The original trilogy of games, I don’t know why the modern DK games with him made it fleshy. Just looks off, and smash has done well to correct that oddity.
Melee Bowser and Giga Bowser and Brawl Bowser and Giga Bowser, to me, are peak Bowser design, but I still quite like 4 Bowser and Ultimate Bowser. Giga Bowser in 4 and Ultimate, for some reason, just doesn't look right to me. In Melee and Brawl, he looks like a terrifying beast and a force of nature, but, in 4 and Ultimate, he looks like a man in a kaiju suit; he looks so out of place.
The only human characters that translated well to Brawl's art style are Link, Samus, and Snake, and that's because Link and Samus were almost identical to preexisting character models, and Snake just had Big Boss's face plopped onto MGS2 Snake's body.
Brawl and 4 have my favorite Artstyles in the series. Both go very far in two different directions and I love that! I want the gritty realism or the highly saturated. Not Ultimate's in between that I really hate
I know it’s obvious the most notable difference with Pyra and Mythra is the addition of the pantyhose/tights, much more notable in with Mythra who was just bare legs (it even became a free update costume in XC2 for the latter, way before she was added)
3:29 you got them backwards, in Minceaft the bottom of Steve’s torso is the color of his shirt where as smash bros fixes it by making the bottom of Steve’s torso the Sam color as his pants which just looks better
3:08 tbh I don't think it's a great idea to give Bowser jr more realistic textures like his dead cause it would make him look less cuter which doesn't really fits him.
I did leave a like, and I will consider checking out your channel, but I feel this topic could have been explored way more and gone into much more detail. But still, I liked it
Ganon 2:50 he does have a difference from the original design if you look close the little things on the arms has a little extra design at the wrist part of it while in the original there is no pattern there
Why didn’t you give a special shout out for Pit’s design in literally all media Brawl designed him as if he were a continuing series that didn’t see it’s last entry in the Game Boy era and looked as if a new game was right around the corner
3:33 did you get these backwards on purpose? because those are definitely backwards... also, the version on the right dosn't match the model since the texture png is the clean-shaven Steve that was used for a while after the PC version's release (I believe it was release onwards, at least...) and the model is the beard Steve which was used in earlier versions and then got brought back later on.
I'm the other way around, Melee's design was really garbage, & Brawl's is amazing except for certain characters. But we can all agree that Ultimate is the best hands down for the majority of the characters.
I see y'all have a lot of comments. Here's me talking about 'em: th-cam.com/video/AclI-u52i8A/w-d-xo.html

And Rosalina.
Who?
Really hot take, but I definitely enjoy Brawl’s aesthetic the most out of the Smash games. Someone claimed Peach looks like a Barbie doll in Brawl, and while I can understand the sentiment, I feel ironically the exact opposite. I loved her redesign in Brawl, but feel that Ultimate leaned way too much into a toy-like aesthetic if that makes sense…?
THIS. I think Smash went from toony > slightly realistic > realistic > slightly realistic > toony.
3:08 I actually think this is more of a benefit than a drawback. The lack of scales and overtly monstrous textures make Jr. look a lot cuter and less intimidating than Bowser. They show that he hasn't been in as many battles, and as such, has to rely on the clown cart for intimidation.
I'd argue they changed kirby's and dedede proportions very slightly, and they gave metaknight gauntlets.
Speaking of Peach, I really miss her Melee redesign. She looks like a real playful princess and it was also based on her N64's appearance.
With how good the video is I'm surprised it's from a smaller channel. (Take this as a compliment)
Thank you!
Sheik was unused so yeah her unused TP design was used for Brawl.
Looking at it closely, Dark Samus is just mostly her Prime 3 design, but with cooler textures. I probably would put her in tier 2 instead
Brawl Mario is what got me hyped for the Wii back in 06'.
LOVE THE VIDEO!!!
Adding a second thin cylinder on Pac-Man's shoulders is the worst change they ever made
Enderman basically unchanged? He’s way smaller in SSBU as a fighter than in his own series
Oops. My bad.
But that is not the real Enderman, it's just a skin, and you can have/make a skin like that in Minecraft.
@@luk3to
The alt is being treated as real Enderman rather than Steve cosplaying as one
(Dark Knight reference here)
Her Ultimate became my overall favorite! She’s more cheerful and spunky! I can see this Zelda appear in just about ANYTHING. I can see her for the next Mario Kart. I would love to see her fleshed out in a spinoff title eventually!
Sonic's model in game is actually pretty different from how he looks on his render tbh
I'm pretty sure when steve got released someone made a mod that allowed to get custom minecraft skins by just typing the playername of that skin
Basically a stretch but Soras hair is slightly more spikier than the kh1 model, prob to fit with his other game alts where his hair keeps changing.
Something to mention about Peach too- She has a ring for some reason.
Also for peach, no one seems to think its as big a deal as i think it is, but peach/daisy has long ape arms. Its hard to tell but if you see her without the dress her arms are long as hell
I like brawl it was great
Zelda got the same treatment as Dark Samus her design is a fusion between her design from a link to the past and link between worlds.
Realistic detail isn’t the problem. It was just the muted colors that were.
I respect everyones opinions, and I definitely loved this video
But I like brawls art style because smash 4's renders look like Plastic to me and ultimate looks slightly more shiny plastic
Nah, the FE reps looked great there.
Bro, I can see why some people may not like brawl’s art style and some people also say brawl isn’t the best smash game
I was Wario Land was represented more in Smash Bros
Me too...
Brawl and 4 have my favorite Artstyles in the series.
Both go very far in two different directions and I love that!
I want the gritty realism or the highly saturated. Not Ultimate's in between that I really hate
Why do I like Smash Bros Brawl’s realistic art style more then Smash 4 & Ultimate’s art style.
I know it’s obvious the most notable difference with Pyra and Mythra is the addition of the pantyhose/tights, much more notable in with Mythra who was just bare legs (it even became a free update costume in XC2 for the latter, way before she was added)
Banger video
5:24 errrm acktchually Snake’s Smash design is from MGS2 which wasn’t out yet so he would’ve been based on MGS1
surprised you didnt talk about pit
3:29 you got them backwards, in Minceaft the bottom of Steve’s torso is the color of his shirt where as smash bros fixes it by making the bottom of Steve’s torso the Sam color as his pants which just looks better
I thought of Kristen Bell saying “YA BASIC” at 5:59
3:08 tbh I don't think it's a great idea to give Bowser jr more realistic textures like his dead cause it would make him look less cuter which doesn't really fits him.
Hey connor im new too your channel love tge vid tho💚
I did leave a like, and I will consider checking out your channel, but I feel this topic could have been explored way more and gone into much more detail. But still, I liked it
Ganon 2:50 he does have a difference from the original design if you look close the little things on the arms has a little extra design at the wrist part of it while in the original there is no pattern there
Nothing is changed, Doc is definitely changed compare this to his Dr. Mario 64 design
Why didn’t you give a special shout out for Pit’s design in literally all media
Brawl designed him as if he were a continuing series that didn’t see it’s last entry in the Game Boy era and looked as if a new game was right around the corner
Bro spent like like 5 seconds on Roy acting like it’s not the best redesign in smash
2:37: The Sonic Fanbase would highly disagree with you there
I think the next smash game should be an in-between of 4 and ultimates graphics
Maybe! Brighter colors would be nice.
A mix of 4 and Ultimate just seems like 4 to me.
Well, you lost me calling Brawl looking like shit.
K rool originally had golden a golden belly. They made it fleshy, which is gross
You should look at the game models and compare them to the game models
It has always bothered me that Bowser Jr. and Bowser r two different art styles
Are you a Metroid fan? I couldn’t tell
no i hate it
@@connors_stories I’ll take the amiibo then
I prefer cartoony
I'm the other way around, Melee's design was really garbage, & Brawl's is amazing except for certain characters. But we can all agree that Ultimate is the best hands down for the majority of the characters.
Am I the only one who genuinely likes the Brawl look?
Like I knue objectively it's shit but I always dug the look
I like it too
It’s not just you, I adore Brawl’s style the most.
1:27 If you are having a problem with graphics, you should consider uploading; never, leave this channel alone, and be apart of what I consider “Life”
