- David Allen Coe performs "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" live at the Farm Aid concert in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 18, 1994. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

I play the guitar and sing this song in front of my dog and 6 kids. They all agree this is the most perfect country and western song every written.
This will be me one day 😂
this IS NOT the perfect country and western song, it dont mention trains, or trucks...
Legends are dying off don’t ever forget who brought up country music people this is tried and true country
steve goodman is a massive legend
D,G,C,F, Goodman wrote that simple song ,nitwits didnt really live that
And so is John Prine!
It probably IS the perfect C&W song ever written
Gayle Bailey x
Definitely the perfect country and western folk song
*Hank Jr enters the chat*
Probably? Boy it is
STEVE GOODMAN, with a little help from Prine.
Ol dave was old before i was born. Still hangin around.
Definitely an awesome country and western song! Problem is David Allen Coe always left out John Prine as the co-writer of this song. In a hotel room after a show one night. Google it or TH-cam it. Steve Goodman and John Prine co writing this song.
It’ll be a sad day when this man passes
The original written by Steve Goodman and John Prine is terrific.
Yea the story behind it is awesome too. So apparently they were sharing a hotel room and John walks in and Steve has the first two lines down. Jokingly he says “that’s a real weeper” so he jumps up on the bed and says “ you don’t have to call me darlin darlin you never even called me by my name”
DAC is the definitive version.
RIP John Prine, the last true country artist
I've always loved David Allen Come. He's written so many awesome songs. While he was in prison, George Jones and many others He is amazing and I love him. I wish TH-cam would play all the songs David Allen Come has written
still got the voice. R.I.P. papa. i know you loved this song.
That mullet can't be duplicated!!!
That is the perfect country and western jacket.
Real Country music
Coming from a rock fan
The is the perfect version of the perfect C&W song. Steve Goodman was an absolute legend, and it was such a tragedy to lose him to leukemia at such a young age. RIP, "Cool Hand Leuk!" He loved life and found humor even in the toughest times.
Love this version and also love Steve Goodman's and John Prine's...all my favorites!
God bless Steve Goodman, and John prine.
Hang in there John. I pray every day you survive this.
Thanks Cole, love you too
Legend!
That is one fabulous mullet!!!
I believe this is the perfect Country and Western song ever written and performed by - Mr. David Allen Coe.
Well, as even he notes, Steve Goodman and John Prine wrote the song.
@@dejordyball Written by Steve Goodman and John Prine. Not David G. But he performed it perfectly.
I do this song at karaoke always a hit!
If we ever decide to change the national anthem, this one's got my vote to replace it.
I was there with my old & dear friend Mickey Bratcher.

Great song by the amazing John Prine and Steve Goodwin.
Goodman :-D
@@TheZacek Prine said Goodman wrote it... but John helped, i'm sure... and Steve brought John a jukebox for part of the royalties he declined...
Loretta Whelpton and that long list of cliches that Steve crammed together in one hilarious verse cane from David Allen coe
Cool. He didn't even need a band.
goat roper music at its best
D.A.C. 4 EVER
FROM THE OLD SCHOOL ☆💕💿
GIANMARCO GROPPELLI: MOVIES REVIEWER-POET-WRITER-NOVELIST.
Ain't nobody gonna talk about Steve's original solo between the song!
Sweet you put up some DAC!!! Please put up DAC's performance from Farm Aid 2!!!!
written by Steve Goodman with an assist from John Prine and Coe.
No - co-written by John Prine and Steve Goodman.
@@blackenedblue5401 yeah but dac added the lyrics at the end about being drunk and picking his mom up from prison
Bad Grandpa!!
That is definitely the most perfect mullet ever.
Wig
@@Randallkoller yo mommas a wig
Link for coes best live version? I’ve found one from probably when he released it. But not many others
Power Mullet
🙂🙂
this the 2nd where he speeds it up ...why????
His mullet would end the war in the middle east
"Country" not sound alike pop like now.
Written by John Prine and his good friend Steve Goodman.
Sorry, but written by Steve Goodman and his goodfriend John Prine. Not the other way around.
@@bobdowlen123 Other way around - John Prine creative lead. I mean look at his body of work, it's obvious who the songwriter is lol
blackenedblue it was Steve Goodman’s song written when steve and John were stuck in a hotel room in New York John added lyrics and helped put it together Both day that it was coe who wrote back and said it needed pickup trucks prison Christmas a farm getting drunk etc So Steve crammed all the cliches into one hilarious verse so it’s a Goodman and Prine song with an assist from coe
@@blackenedblue5401 maybe you should look up Steve Goodman’s songwriting credits !
Even John Prine credits Steve for bulk of the lyrics to this song !
A lady worked for me in Memphis and she was his girlfriend years ago.
If that Mullet isn't "ain't" Country, I'll kiss your Ass.
Johnny Boudreaux
John didn't want writing credits because he said it was a goofy song.
Luke the drifter you’re absolutely correct. But we still can consider it a JP song 😎
Nice wig
Mullet game next level tho. Australians are jealous of that mullet.
I bet u wont call him charlie rich
tennis
Iv never heard David Allen Coe play a guitar worth a dam,,, I really don't think he can,,,
I was thinking the same thing.
That guitar had the shittiest tone ive ever heard
I like his studio recordings. I've yet to hear any live versions that I like.
He doesn't need to
@@briansizelove4059 Live from Billy Bob's Texas seems to do DAC justice.
I wonder who wrote the line about Jesus??
Prine probably (or Coe or both)
Is Steve Goodman still alive that originated this song
He passed away in 1984 age 36 from leukemia.
Met a red head at the coe concert.... Should of ran!
wow...he looks "hot"...(likes the Rhinestone Jacket!)
You dont have to call me 'darlin', Darlene. You never even call me by my name.
Saw him found about this Time in the Hallenstadion Zürich, definitively the worst Country Concert I have experienced in my whole live.
@2:15 I see what you did there
A
Some things can't be duplicated... But he didn't write it lol
Nobody can sing it like him though
@@williamtimmons235 And on top of that it fits his whole career perfectly. Example being people still don't know that he wrote Take this job and shove it not Johnny paycheck.
I love Louisianna!!! I hate electronic harrasment and GANGSTALKING (ancient KKK technique)
People paid money to see this?
Stop hatin
Looks like
Or prison... 😂
Single handedly destroyed his own career
You got stuck in a chair like Donald Trump?
Supernaw sounded 30x better doing it if we are speaking facts
Good grief!
