As an 81 year old in a six days time, I have never been disappointed in any of John's songs or performances, it was a very sad day when he passed away, the world lost an unbelievable and to some degree an underrated talent, just think of all of the music fans who had never experienced his genius, and to those of us who did - from a long time ago. thank you John - your music and memory will live on with us forever.

1971- I was at The Old Town School of Folk Music a guest of Winn Stracke the founder. He had performed ALL of John's first album for us, well almost all. And we where huge fans on the spot. The club across the street rumor had it was where Kris Kristofferson heard John. I met John and Steve at a waaaaay out in the hills concert in Maine in 1975. My girl and I were stagehands and backstage. She was picked to present Steve with birthday flowers. I made veggie stew for the band.
Days and nights like that just can't be brought back. Much like Mr. Peabody's coal. I hear John's little brother is out performing the songs!

Pretty sure the young man playing lead guitar is the youngster from Bloomington, Indiana. Had him in a high school class I was a substitute teacher for. Lot of music in Bloomington, Even beyond Molenkamp, a new young lady Sadie Johnson ex Sad Sam Blues Band. Keep an eye on her. And her sister on bass and Krista Hess on Guitar as well.

David Allan Coe made a lot of money for himself & Steve Goodman by recording this song. It reached number eight on the charts in 1975. Even though John Prine helped Steve write it, Prine requested to be uncredited on the song because he thought it was a goofy novelty song. Years later, Steve gave John, John’s part of the royalties out of good faith to his friend.

I am 77 and even though I had a good singing voice I did not pay much attention to music until about 10 years ago when I discovered karaoke on you tube and started to use that to learn different songs. I go to karaoke venues now at least once a week and for an old fart, I am ok. I had never heard of most of the musicians that I sing to until something happens to them. I just started to learn about John Prine about a month ago and he has been added to my list. My wife and I sing "in spite of ourselves" and I do "the other side of town"

Steve Goodman--what TERRIBLE LOSS.Even when he was ill, he toured and would stop at hospitals to get treatments...... the disease finally claimed him--but the world gained beautiful songs, and enjoyed Steve's dear sweet spirit. His light burns still, in the hearts of those he touched.... xoooox

What the hell you talking about? Why is it not good enough to suit you that he had a huge following and had everything he wanted? What no AM radio playing his hit single all week over and over? Is that the recognition you think is good or did he let you down by not writing real popular lame ass songs of the insipid MTV or VH1 kind. Man, he was a songwriter's songwriter and it takes good taste and quick wit to appreciate John Prine not mention actually listen to his lyrics. He was as close to perfect as can be and those big rock stars attract the brain dead. You don't get it do you.

I think he made this up as he went along. Seems I heard the stor Steve was going to give the song to Coe to do and wanted to know if John wanted credit. John thought the sng was stupid, which is why David Alan Coe never gave him credit for it. I have a double album with the story book the various songs on album. John said he would write songs in his mind on the way to the club show he did, because he was afraid the people were tired of his others.

I have never seen an artist so loved and recognized as i did when i saw john and jason and band in Indianapolis. John just spoke out loud on the microphone to people he knew and recognized out in the crowd telling them he will see them after the show. That night was one one the best concerts of my life. Now the first time i saw him was in evansville indiana at the mesker park amphitheater bluegrass concert. Earl Scruggs and sons were on the stage and i kept seeing this roady down front feverishly smoking ciggs and chuggin jack daniels whiskey. I thought who in the hell is that rough cutt lookin grubby roadie down front. Then they announced mr. John prine and he walked on stage ,he alone with his martin d 28,set that bottle of jack down and went to work. I had never seen anything like it . The stories, the songs and funny lyrics. Man he was a true master at work holding us all spell bound. Liveing in the moment contemplating humor ,sadness,a lost love, and twisted marital relationship, and murder on a fishing trip. Never will forget it.

To me, he speaks of Texas. To others he speaks of other lives I suppose. I suppose in a weird, different way that is why Shakespeare is still popular 😊. Both of them understood the human being and the conversations, stories and emotions that was and is life. I found him too late when he passed away. The man was a born for the working class, musical genius.

I think the first time I saw him was '80 either at the Warner or Baltimore's historic Lyric. He was a crowd pleaser. The last time I saw him was at Wolf Trap one summer some years after his throat cancer recovery. He'd play what we asked for. I think it was him who said on stage to tell the truth when we could. Humble, honest, and intelligent was John.

Back in the 80s Arlo opened for him, and then in later years they got together some more. I'm pretty sure that was the case in DC in the early 2000s. The last time I saw him was in Vienna maybe 2008. Whoops I lied just then. Phoenix at the MIM was great show. Fairly recent, in the 8 years but I get out a lot. Loved his somewhat reverse unconventional picking method. Hard to pull off. Fave song Unwed Fathers or Burned Orange I guess.
