The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast is a series of television specials hosted by entertainer Dean Martin and airing from 1974 to 1984. For a series of 54 specials and shows, Martin and his friends would "roast" a celebrity. The roasts were patterned after the roasts held at the New York Friars' Club.

Frank Sinatra (1915 - 1998) was an American singer, actor, and producer who was one of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide.

Dean Martin (1917 - 1995) was an American singer, actor, and comedian. One of the most popular and enduring American entertainers of the mid-20th century, Martin was nicknamed "The King of Cool." Martin gained his career breakthrough together with comedian Jerry Lewis, billed as Martin & Lewis, in 1946. They performed in nightclubs and later had numerous appearances on radio, television, and films. Following an acrimonious ending of the partnership in 1956, Martin pursued a solo career as a performer and actor. Martin established himself as a singer, recording numerous contemporary songs and standards from the Great American Songbook. He became one of the most popular acts in Las Vegas and was known for his friendship with fellow artists Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., who formed the Rat Pack. In 1965, Martin was the host of the television variety program The Dean Martin Show, which centered on Martin's singing and comedic talents and was characterized by his relaxed, easy-going demeanor. From 1974 to 1984, he was roastmaster on the famous Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, drawing celebrities, comedians, and politicians. Throughout his career, Martin performed in concert stages, nightclubs, audio recordings and appeared in 85 film and television productions. His most iconic songs include "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?", "Memories Are Made of This," "That's Amore," "Everybody Loves Somebody," "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You," "Sway," and "Volare."

Don Rickles (1926 - 2017) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, known primarily for insult comedy. A headline performer at Las Vegas hotel-casinos and peripheral member of the Rat Pack via friendship with Frank Sinatra, Rickles received widespread exposure as a frequent guest on talk and variety shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and Late Show with David Letterman.
Peter Falk (1927 - 2011) was an American actor and comedian, known for his role as Lieutenant Columbo in the long-running television series Columbo (1968-2003), for which he won four Primetime Emmy Awards (1972, 1975, 1976, 1990) and a Golden Globe Award (1973). Falk was twice nominated for the Academy Award and won his first Emmy Award in 1962 for The Dick Powell Theatre. He was the first actor to be nominated for an Academy Award and an Emmy Award in the same year, achieving the feat twice (1961/62). He went on to appear in such films as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Great Race (1965), Anzio (1968), Murder by Death (1976), The Cheap Detective (1978), The In-Laws (1979), The Princess Bride (1987), Wings of Desire (1987), The Player (1992), and Next (2007), as well as many television guest roles.

Method actor apparently.
It is amazing act he did here . Like Foster Brooks same . All are dying from laughter but they continue like it's a real situation.
No vulgar language, no obscene gestures, they were all masters of their craft and I never realized how talented they truly were at the time. When I watch them now I appreciate them even more knowing we will never see their likes again.
Exactly! I'm 22 going on 23 and I love these roasts! They're so much better than the ones they do now! I would wish they'd bring them back but it wouldn't be the same.
Yes! However I would love to see the unedited version if it exists like the Richard Pryor one! The world is too sensitive today for that! Lol 😂

Peter Falk. What an absolute gem of a man. A loss to the world on so many levels.
He was Columboe .

Peter Falk and Jonathan Winters left everyone else in the dust in this roast.

Indeed. One of my favorites to this day. I’ve watched every episode of Columbo multiple times, and still enjoy it. His performance at this roast was brilliant.
Without a doubt this was the best Dean Martin roast of all time. The group of performers gathered was perfect and much of the humor was spontaneous. We live in a world now where we have to read on tiptoes fearing some tender minded listener may be offended. What kind of society have we been reduced to ?
I think I now understand what Nietzche meant when he said that "nostalgia is for the weak".
You have to watch Don Rickles being roasted. It was one of the funniest ever!
It's sad.
He also said “Africans are, like non-human animals, less sensitive to pain than Europeans.”
@@ericpedrosa5364 well, back then people had tougher skin and they were not offended as easily as today. If you have watched all of the roasts you’d have noticed that the banter was back and forth, not just toward black people, but also White, Hispanics, Asians etc. nobody was spared or offended. It was sense of humor. Nowadays, even being polite is offensive to some. Back then these shows made everyone laugh. Today people use these to divide others. Today, it’s a shame that humor, past and present, is used to separate us more…
Have watched this roast video many times and Peter Falk (Detective Colombo) is a masterpiece of professional art, humor, timing, acting, total commitment as Colombo never breaking character and completly connecting with the audience, Frank Sinatra and all the guest roasters! You can see how much Frank loved it along with everyone else. What an outstanding gifted talent and we miss you Peter Falk.💖
Couldn't agree more..Peter Falk was absolutely brilliant 👏

Fantastic
I saw Martin and Lewis when I was 5 years old, and for the briefest moment Dean leaned over the sang to me as I was the only kid allowed to stand so close to the stage. I was smitten and loved him immediately. I never stopped in my complete admiration of him.
Those were the days of pure and decent entertainment with the best actors, comedians, singers in the world.
They spent more than 30 seconds performing before their "likes" & paychecks.
2.13pmthose were the days😂
Back in the 2000s they tried to revive the roasts. They were just vulgar and not funny. And the celebrities roasted were totally undeserving, such as: Justin Beiber, Pam Anderson etc..
and politicians, nobody toed the party line back then.
Telly, Fred, Earnest, Jack, Ronald, Bill, Don, Dom, Dean, Flip, Frank, Peter, Milton, and the rest of the greatest generation! America was truly the best back then!
Truly was. Bring back those days.

Being a teenager in the mid 70s , these are the guys I looked up to. If you stop and think of the amount of talent and star power on that stage, it's mind blowing. And many give credit to another for the start of their careers. Not today.
I graduated high school in 1971 and these comics were from my parents's generation but we loved them nevertheless. In my old age, I appreciate them even more. With the exception of Rich Little most of the people on the dais have probably passed on. Tis a shame.
They are just people. People with addictions and probably into some of the most macabre things that you could imagine. Idol worship is a fools habit.
Some of it would not be ok now, woke. It was a bit cringed

Jonathan Winters could improv like crazy. He just goes off on this one. Hysterical!
He and Columbo stole the show.
He improved like crazy because he was lmao I think all GOOD comedians are a bit touched that’s why they’re so funny at least the really good ones that don’t have to rely on vulgarity but can tell funny stories and jokes even add libbing start off the cuff no preparation needed like Johnathon Winters he was a master in this manner of comedy Robin Williams was a very close second as proven in his show Mork & Mindy

Johnathon Winters would be hard comedian to learn how to be a comedian from since nearly every thing he did was spontaneous he did know what he was going to say until a few seconds before he said it.
When on the The Johnny Carson show Johnny could had him one of several different objects he had hidden behind his desk. He told Johnny Winters what he was going to do that was all the preparation Winters got then Johnny would hand him something as obscure as a feather where by Johnny Winters could keep the audience laughing away both Carson an Winters could tell when the bit was starting to run cold even before the audience knew that’s how great their timing was from years of telling jokes to audiences of every type of person in the world that visited just to be a part of his audience
Whe
N the feather jokes started to run cold even before the audience knew Carson would hand Winter’s another item maybe a book or a flashlight you name pocket lint couldn’t be ruled out of a sketch whe Carson and Winters were together

NOTHING was ever funnier or greater than these Roasts. We saw the TOP TALENT in the business do what they did best. They made us laugh, split a gut and fall on the floor. NO ONE was insulted or took offense. Black , Hispanic, Asian, white, everyone had the talent and guts to make people laugh. NO POLITICALLY CORRECT BS. Laughter was laughter, and THESE PEOPLE were the "A" list cream of the crop ! We don't have anyone around like that anymore. Truly the "Golden Age of Comedy" !
All these wonderful people gone but, never forgotten!
Rich Little and Ruth Buzzi are still alive 🙂
For as long as we have TH-cam, we have these Roasts
Wow. Frank's speech at the end was The highlight of the whole roast. Dean has been my favorite since I was a little girl watching his shows with my parents. I'm glad Frank said that he wasn't a drunk. Too many people believed his act.
Frank was humble and genuine, something we certainly don't see today. The entire dias would cry their eyes out of they could see what passes for comedy today and the woke BS where everyone is offended. Class act, every one of them.
Thanks for the memories.
Wow great assessment, you hit the nail on the head
Very very true, unfortunately you have to take into account the so called comedians of today nothing more than crude human beings with little if no education. JUST Get on stage high on drugs and act stupid. Oh yeah don't forget to grab your crouch
If you take a good look in this roast Dean is actually drinking water from a water glass of it were actually vodka or something I believe it'd been a different glass jmo

These old roasts are so much better then the what passes for roasting now. We went from roasting, to vulgar insulting and calling it a roast.
Those were truly the days of great comedians/ actors.

There will never be a group like this ever again, just watching them today still cry
Pure gold. I miss these giants of the entertainment world. We will never see the likes of these funny funny men ever again. Peter Falk's turn was absolutely hysterical. It was perfect..
Red Foxx was very cordial and polite. I met him around 40 + years ago in Hollywood driving down Franklin Street. He was wanting to cut in front of me where the street was narrowing down for street repairs. So I waived him on to cut in front of me. He signaled me to follow him to his beauty shop and introduced me to his staff.
It was a beautiful shop with a bridge going over a small pond and invited me to have his cook make me dinner . Thanks Redd
Wow!

Where was his shop located exactly? Would love to see what's there now
I am surprised not to see Jerry Lewis there? He died in 2017. He was very close to Dean Martin. Can someone comment?

The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts were the best, and this roast of Frank Sinatra might have been the best of them all. Here we are still watching, decades later, after every one of those gifted entertainers is gone. It’s 2024 as I write this, an interesting and exciting time to be alive in many ways. I strive to live in the present and look to the future, but when I feel like watching something on TV I usually go to TH-cam and find a show like this, or Johnny Carson, or Columbo. I find it so enjoyable, and it takes me back in time to the world I grew up in, and probably most who are watching this did as well. I’m thankful to be alive today, but to me those will always be the good old days… 😊

The heartfelt loving comments at the end are magnified by all the insults throughout. It's like an Irish friends' fistfight followed by laughter. I almost cried when they got serious.
My wife could not believe I could name everyone right down the line. That's the highest compliment to this collection of talent.
The best!! I miss all of them, but maybe they're in a better place - I don't think they'd understand today's comedy or lack thereof. They laughed at themselves and each other. So glad that TH-cam carries these clips.

This was so much fun as a child because you were very lucky if your parents would let you watch this we were laughing all crazy like the audience 😜 loved Dean Martin for sure
This celebrity roast was a master class for expiring comedians. Most of today's comedians need to watch this and similar roastmasters to know that they do not have to make obscene gesters and spew vulgarity in order to get a laugh. All is needed for gut-busting laughter is a combination of comedic talent, quick wit, perfect timing, and a certain level of class. And surely, the comedians in this celebrity roast - most certainly and unequivocally - possessed those natural-born qualities, all in combination.
I think you meant aspiring.
