    37:42 She actually lost the game; the mom won. What Rachel showed was that she COULD HAVE won, but she gave the winning piece away so that the mom could take it and win. The mom thought she won on her own accord, but when Rachel revealed her hand, she realized she won through Rachel's sacrifice. Just a really great metaphor the movie included.

      I think Rachel would had a better hand too, worth more the Elenore's, I think, I don't know HK or singpore rules, only Japanese riichi, she has all triplets and three of the triplets were concealed, it was hard for me to see it fully though.

      there's a great article about this. after reading it, everytime i watched after was super amazing, the payoff never got old. the mom talked about 'you're not one of our kind' and the way she won was the method where you collect all of the same tile. also, the each side of the table is north west east and south, and rachel and eleanor are facing each other and rachel is sitting on the west, and eleanor is sitting on the east. also the choreography of the scene is flawless, the timing of when she places down the tile that allows eleanor to win.

      Its also great that they recorded this kind of scene with a game that is "eastern" and like as a viewer "if you get it, you get it". I knew it signified something, but not what, when she held that specific tile and looked at it...

    As an Asian girl, I underestimated how much not seeing Asian women being the love interest affected me. This all asian cast without the story being about martial arts or "honor" really brought up how narrow of a lens we are seen as. Our culture is a part of us but it is not the main focus point, stories about us don't have to make that the story. How Mandarin was spoken without it being a "here we are authentic" market ploy was also great.

      are you from Asia? are you American? if you care to share, I'm curious bc obviously western media is globally influential, so wondering if you were feeling the lack even if living in Asia. in america, i personally deeply knew of this lack.

      @@sc33h3o3 My story is a bit odd but I am from the one child policy of China and adopted by an Asian Latino father and afro latina mother. Growing up I consumed western and eastern media but I did fall into to mostly watching Korean and Chinese shows since they did have Asian women. However, the only complaint I had was that Asian media puts one kind of girl as a lead. The beauty standard emphasizes thinness.

    13:23 “there are a lot of children starving in America.”
    The writers set it up like this to make a point that even first world countries like America have starving kids. Often times, western media mainly portray it to be Africa, but there are starving kids all over the world even in more privileged countries.

      To me it was to show how their society looked down on America/Americans, like how many Americans view Africa as being a "less civilized" place. It was to set up the concept of Rachel not belonging in the Youngs company because she was American.

  • @athenstar10
    @athenstar10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +244

    FYI:
    1. "You'll never be good enough" is a line that says it all about most Asian cultures. Marriage is considered as the union between two families so it's very important that who bring into the family has the same beliefs, principles, upbringing,etc. No matter how nice your in-laws are or how close you are to them, there will always be something different fomr the way you do things, so in Asian's perspective Eleanor is just giving her an advice.
    2. THE RING is actually owned by the actress who played the mom, Michelle Yeoh. She was given a selection of rings to choose from but she said none represents "Eleanor's character"
    3. At the end of the movie most viewers came to a conclusion that Astrid is "The Queen".

  • @beefeebrillate3688
    @beefeebrillate3688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +262

    Just some context for the mah jong scene: The way to win is by making a whole set by either drawing randomly from the stack, or drawing from your opponent's discard pile. Nick's mom won when she drew the tile Rachel discarded. When Rachel reveals her hand, you'd realize that she would've won if she DIDN'T discard the last tile.
    In this scene Rachel says "When he marries another lucky girl who is enough for you, [...] that it was because of me." The mom only won because Rachel gave up the tile.

    21:30 in East Asian culture family is bigger than individuality, so you hear a lot of times ppl calling each other by their full names (unless they’re close friends or family). For us (westerns) we have a last name cause our first names introduce ourselves. but in asian culture ppl’s “last names” are the beginning part of their full name. So in asia it would be “Chu Rachel” (in English) because family identity/legacy is more important. but in general last names (family names) hold more weight than your first name.
    which is kind of relation to why nick’s mom was not for Rachel’s own “passion” aka her individuality > family

    • @sc33h3o3
      @sc33h3o3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      also, in Korean culture, family wouldn't ever say Eleanor, they would say "Nick's mom." reinforcing not her identity as an individual but her familial role

    there is a lot of fascinating cultural context. unfortunately, traditionally, chinese women had very little control over their families save for one thing: their daughter-in-law. as a result, there was a lot of abuse from mothers to their daughters-in-law, and when those daughters-in-law grew up, they turned that abuse on the wives of their own sons. I believe i read about that in "The Chinese in America," which is an incredible read if you like history books.

I didn't get the opportunity to visit when I visited Singapore with my family back in 2017, but the whole city is absolutely immaculate. Though, the rigidity of their penal system and overall feeling of unease makes the UAE feel like a free country. Everything in Dubai may be is bigger but it's more human.

    I insisted on seeing this movie in theaters when it came out, and I'm so glad I did! I SOBBED during the wedding scene and didn't stop crying after that. The movie was such a great adaptation of the book because it added things, but did not take anything away from the story. In fact, I think I like the movie even better than the book. Also, at the end of the book, they don't get engaged, they just agree to continue to date. The second book was lots of fun and I'm excited to see the movie for it. They changed Astrid's story in the movie (for the better imo) so I wonder how they'll write it for the second movie.

    I remember first seeing this in theaters and remembered crying during the wedding scene and was just feeling every literal emotion during the movie and then the moment the airplane scene came on everyone in the theater Gasped when the reveal happened, it was such a twist and so beautiful at the same time. My goodness it made me cry more.

    The only thing I didn’t like about this movie is that once they got there he should have prepared her more for what she was going to face so she wasn’t so blindsided, especially about the mom…”like my mom is really traditional and reserved” so maybe she wouldn’t go in for the big hug at first. I don’t know it just seems like there are some things he could have done to make it a little easier for her.

    Love that you liked the movie. It is one of the movies that is on repeat every now and then. And yes, that building is a real one. It is named Marina Bay Sands Hotel located in Singapore (as some of the locations was shot in Malaysia also). The movie was considered an all asian (or at least asian descent) actors (except the one in US location for the support/extras).

    I really liked the movie! We visited Warner Brothers studios recently on vacation, so of course I had to get my pic next to the famous wedding dress, and the little dress the main gal wore to her first party where she meets the grandma etc.

    Michael, Astrid's husband, could be seen as a dark mirror for Rachel and what she could become; he may have started off just like Rachel, and succumbed to the pressures of being in that family, especially for a man to not be the "breadwinner".
    As far as Rachel's real father, she actually does meet him and his family in a later book!

    The building at the end is the Marina Bay Sands. One of the best hotels/malls in Singapore. Real expensive though 🥹, and almost everything inside are luxury brands and super expensive restaurants. The infinity pool is amazing and scary. The rooms are exquisite especially the blankets. 😄

    Awe sweet boys, you don't need money to find a partner and love! You need kindness, respect, a willingness to work and choose your partner through every obstacle. It's not easy but honestly if you start in friendship (being realistic and not expecting a super model); see if there's compatibility and a spark with both of you and don't have expectations and let it happen naturally!
