This is one of those movies that are so light and nice that it feels sad because of how reality is. A woman becomes President of the US as a democrat with a mexican husband and a biracial son who is openly bisexual... and she wins Texas.
This movie nailed the "How to make a good LGBT+ story" by: 1) Skipping the "Abuse" (way too common) 2) Skipping the "Double Standards" between the two main characters. Both guys are actually treated like men. Love them ❤
They sadly made one of the only other LGBTQ+ characters an antagonist who not only outs them both but had a past sexual relationship with one of them which is very messed up. That stops me from holding it up as "how to make a good LGBT+ story." I will hold it up as a good enemies to lovers and a good romcom as its avoids so many problem tropes with the leads and their romance.
Based on what I saw NOBODY was expecting this movie to be good in any sense of the word. He wasn't out during the first couple of years of his career - understandably so! It was a really shitty time to be gay back then. Fry has also spoken about how he was celibate for literally an entire decade when the AIDS crisis was waging - a choice that was self-denial and self-preservation in equal measures. My hot take is that they cast him of all people as the king in order to insinuate that the king himself might also be gay or bi but closeted. It would add a whole extra level of poignancy imho.
While I used to really appreciate him some of his more, shall we say, problematic views and positions taint that a bit. He is actually (as of my looking into it a couple years ago) a huge supporter of the monarchy. I watched a debate he did against the idea that the monarchy doesnt provide enough to continue supporting it. That very supportive view might have been another reason they thought of him.
The emails in the book are so much more heartbreaking because it details so much of their family. In the book the president is divorced. And Alex doesn’t have a perfect relationship with his mom, so he talks about that, and Henry talks about his sister’s addiction (which the world wasn’t aware of) as well as his mom being depressed and neglecting them after his dad’s death and his grandma (the queen) treating them in an almost non-humane way. The emails had SO MUCHHHHH. Can’t recommend the book enough.
I think in movie they mostly only showed alex and henry what was their love was and the struggle and all. As the movie was only for mostly 2hrs so I think it’s the best they did cause if they focused more on this details it would’ve taken them to make a series on it. (Tbh i wish they make series with these two actors only)

Lord Ivar Mountbatten, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, came out as gay in 2016, five years after divorcing his wife, Penelope Thompson. Two years later, Thompson "gave him away" at his wedding to James Coyle, the first same-sex marriage of a member of the extended British royal family. The men live at a magnificent country estate, Bridwell, which you can rent for your own wedding or event. Lord Ivar seems to be the only openly out gay royal currently. There have been a few in the distant past.

See I don't think that anyone who is straight can really grasp how deeply it affects queer people to see the scene where people are supporting them outside the palace. It's not just a "hey we support them. Who cares about traditional royal image?" but its also the symbolic power of "there is a future where queer people are celebrated in seats of power and are able to live without shame" and that's why Benji crying is so real.
Even though the movie is obviously not based on a true story, the emails being hacked is based on a real scandal where phones of dozens of celebrities and public figures were hacked, including members of the royal family. But the most twisted thing about it was when it was discovered that, not only had phones of victims in terrorist attacks been hacked, but also the phone of a murdered teenager named Milly Dowler, which lead the police and her family to hold out false hope that she was still alive. I can't believe some people have said that Nicholas and Taylor have no chemistry. Their connection felt so organic and effortless. I could feel the angst, the hurt, the longing, the love and the friendship. I really love how the sex scene is so much more than sex, it's truly making love. It was so intimate that I felt like I was intruding on something very personal between two people. This one of the most beautiful, complex romances I've ever seen in a movie. But also a great depiction of what it's like to be in a position where you are afraid to be who you are.
I totally agree about the sex scene. It was the most intimate I think I’ve ever seen in a normal movie. Their chemistry was off the charts, in my opinion, both on set and off.
it's impressive how such a silly little low-budget edit of a lgbt crowd reflected on glass can get to us HAHSHSUSHHAHS i felt so silly losing it and crying at that part too but it's just the cutest thing ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
This is the start to the Author's note from the book: "I came up with the idea for this book on an I-10 off-ramp in early 2016, and I never imagined what it would turn out to be. I mean, at that point I couldn’t imagine what 2016 itself would turn out to be. Yikes. For months after November, I gave up on writing this book. Suddenly what was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek parallel universe needed to be escapist, trauma-soothing, alternate-but-realistic reality. Not a perfect world-one still believably fucked up, just a little better, a little more optimistic. I wasn’t sure I was up to the task. I hoped I was." They cut and changed things from the novel but I think the movie did a fantastic job staying true to the intent of the book.
I watched this movie after having read the book several times and loved it. And then I made my daughter watch it with me. She absolutely loved it and started freaking out very early and said it was making her feel too much and started crying like a quarter of the way through and never stopped.
Commenting for the algorithm, Benji is so real for tearing up at the "I'll break the sound barrier for you" like it's cheesy but its so sweet and it really was such a succinct way for the movie to show how henry and alex are always there for each other. I'm sure many others have already recommended the book but its so worth it even it you don't talk about it anywhere especially if you like the movie its obviously just allows for greater expansion on the main dynamic but also all the side characters
Idk abt the sound barrier but Benji’s lachrymose barrier definitely had a breakthrough. I think their banter and correspondence in general (incl. special BBQ Sauce) was really very cute ❤
Listen the book is so much better because their relationship is established through emails that will absolutely obliterate your emotions with how sweet they are.
Also both Alex and Henry were in a literal closet as a metaphor and then when they came out of the closet in the school is when they start showing chemistry building between these two😸😸
taylor and nick love alex and henry so much and you can see it in the way they brought these characters to life, i am so happy to have seen my comfort book turned into a comfort movie ❤
Benji did not start singing my favorite Shrek the Musical song in the middle of RWRB. My heart stopped. I thought I was hallucinating or misattributing the song. I thought, “That can’t be from shrek. Benji is not singing Shrek.”
Get Low was played at my school’s senior Prom (which is what that party looks like to me) in 2018, but it was the clean version. Of course, we knew the best version was not the clean version so everyone that was singing (most of us) just sang the normal lyrics, and the DJ was told he’d have to turn off the music if we kept doing it because the teachers didn't wanna let a group of mostly 18-year-olds sing the curse words in a song 😔
Best litmus test in the world for how well a movie handles the emotional weight of a queer love story is whether it gets Benji to tear up. He has such a high standard, so if a film resonates with him on that level, you know they did something right.
Not me smiling the entire time Benji was crying... Finally! haha. Really love this move and I've rewatched it more times than I should. Sort of gives me comfort.
I absolutely adored the book and when I watched this movie, I was so happy that they came through!! Also, I was lowkey shocked when I saw Benji cry. It finally happened!!
After IWTV being a more toxic gay relationship, I'm glad Benjii finally got to watch this one! Its so wholesome and we need more queer romances of this tone. I was so obsessed with this the first month it came out

Benji said he saw no lube but it was there on the bedside table. Also two condom wrappers on the other table. And I love that they added those details.
@@PinkPopcastyeah I wasn't analysing all the set dressing for background lube either but is nice its there (they could have had Alex pass the bottle to Henry to put on the side table so it wouldn't get missed in the scene, similar to how condoms should be parts of scenes instead of technically there with wrappers)

My obsession with this movie has spilled over to one about the reaction videos, like this one.
Thanks.
Hahah I feel it🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
rizzo realizng that they hadnt bee having sex for the first half took me out for some reason his face was hilarious
😄😄
tbh book alex is so much more iconic, he comes out to his mum via a powerpoint presentation
it's impressive how such a silly little low-budget edit of a lgbt crowd reflected on glass can get to us HAHSHSUSHHAHS i felt so silly losing it and crying at that part too but it's just the cutest thing ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
😂😂😭😭🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
I was thinking "Rizzo's gonna cry for sure" and had to double take when it was Benji😭I love that!
edit: I started crying along
😂😂🏳️🌈🏳️🌈😭😭
This is the start to the Author's note from the book:
"I came up with the idea for this book on an I-10 off-ramp in early 2016, and I never imagined what it would turn out to be. I hoped I was."
They cut and changed things from the novel but I think the movie did a fantastic job staying true to the intent of the book.
Yay so happy you both enjoyed it!! (Benji def read the book or listen to the audiobook and let us know what you think of it at some point pleeeese 😊)
Yeah, I think I’m gonna have to
Alex and Henry really made History and in this channel...Benji crying is historycal
😆😆
I'm so excited!! I can't believe we will see Benji crying! 😂👏
😭😭
I watched this movie after having read the book several times and loved it. And then I made my daughter watch it with me. She absolutely loved it and started freaking out very early and said it was making her feel too much and started crying like a quarter of the way through and never stopped.
😭😭
Commenting for the algorithm, Benji is so real for tearing up at the "I'll break the sound barrier for you" like it's cheesy but its so sweet and it really was such a succinct way for the movie to show how henry and alex are always there for each other. I'm sure many others have already recommended the book but its so worth it even it you don't talk about it anywhere especially if you like the movie its obviously just allows for greater expansion on the main dynamic but also all the side characters

BOTTOMS NEXT PLEASE!!! ILL PAY MILLIONS. ITS ALL I WANT. ITS PERFECT FOR RIZZOS ADHD BRAIN AND BENJIS HUMOR
you're not wrong lolol
@@PinkPopcastYAYYY
when the "Texas turning blue" is the only thing that is off the reality line HHAHAHHA
😭😭
The "I'll break the sound barrier for you" line gives me goosebumps every time!
I'm so ready for this reaction I really Liked the movie I'm so hoping you guys do too.
Idk abt the sound barrier but Benji’s lachrymose barrier definitely had a breakthrough. I think their banter and correspondence in general (incl. special BBQ Sauce) was really very cute ❤
"They need to have a dungeon just for people who walked in on them. " - this killed me. :DD
😂😂
The book is amazing as well and Nicholas and Tyler were perfect as Henry and Alex. The whole cast was tbh
You guys need to watch Bottoms! Nicholas Galiztine is in it and it's so funny!
Listen the book is so much better because their relationship is established through emails that will absolutely obliterate your emotions with how sweet they are.
Rizzo's demands for Alex to keep his promise of doing "very bad things" to Henry is killing me 😂😂😂
Also both Alex and Henry were in a literal closet as a metaphor and then when they came out of the closet in the school is when they start showing chemistry building between these two😸😸
taylor and nick love alex and henry so much and you can see it in the way they brought these characters to life, i am so happy to have seen my comfort book turned into a comfort movie ❤
I legit forgot Stephen fry is gay and married
The whole time I was squeeling, gasping, blushing, and tearing up along with you. Fav one so far ❤
❤️❤️
16:03 I can't believe Alexander Hamilton was in the room where it happened yet again
Seeing Benji cry made me cry, because we never see him cry 🤣
❤️❤️
Ellen Claremont-Diaz 🤝 Sarah Nelson
Affirming Mums to Bi Sons
❤️❤️
I feel like no one gets the gay as a maypole reference. It's a callback to Love, Actually.
i was so scared the movie wasnt gonna live up to the book but i was so wrong. this movie CHANGED me
Benji did not start singing my favorite Shrek the Musical song in the middle of RWRB. My heart stopped. I thought I was hallucinating or misattributing the song. I thought, “That can’t be from shrek. Benji is not singing Shrek.”
Lmaoo definitely shrek 😂
Omg omg omg omg omg yes yes I’ve been waiting for this one!
🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
I love how the emotion just reach out and slapped you. It was like- feel !
😂😂
Get Low was played at my school’s senior Prom (which is what that party looks like to me) in 2018, but it was the clean version. Of course, we knew the best version was not the clean version so everyone that was singing (most of us) just sang the normal lyrics, and the DJ was told he’d have to turn off the music if we kept doing it because the teachers didn't wanna let a group of mostly 18-year-olds sing the curse words in a song 😔
Hahah yes! It totally looked like a prom
waited for the cry for help in rizzo's eyes upon being subjected to another enemies to lovers story, less than two minutes in i am not disappointed
😂
Best litmus test in the world for how well a movie handles the emotional weight of a queer love story is whether it gets Benji to tear up. He has such a high standard, so if a film resonates with him on that level, you know they did something right.
Haha that’s giving me a lot of credit lol but thank you 😊
Gotta give a moment for Benji's jumper, it's giving Chris Evans from Knives Out
Yes!!🙌🙌
I watched this movie with my bsf at school and OH MY GOD, I WAS OBSESSED!!
Not me smiling the entire time Benji was crying... Finally! haha. Really love this move and I've rewatched it more times than I should. Sort of gives me comfort.
😆😆
The book is absolutely hysterical. Especially the turkey scene.
AHHH I’ve been waiting for this one!!!!
🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🙌🙌
I'm just so happy y'all watched it! Honestly never expected for Benji to cry (but NGL I enjoyed Rizzo enjoying the situation LOL) Love you both ❤.
😁😁❤️
I absolutely adored the book and when I watched this movie, I was so happy that they came through!! It’s so refreshing to get a gay love story where they actually end up together & we get a happy ending 🎉🎉
It’s funny that Rizzo called it when Henry threw himself in the water to escape the love conversation haha. Also, I was lowkey shocked when I saw Benji cry. It finally happened!!
To be fair, “I’ll break the sound barrier for you” gets me every time too, so call me a p*ssy 😂
Such a good line 😭😭
After IWTV being a more toxic gay relationship, I'm glad Benjii finally got to watch this one! Its so wholesome and we need more queer romances of this tone. I was so obsessed with this the first month it came out
🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🥰
Here for Benji simping over Alex and Henry simultaneously 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. But more for Alex😂😂
🥵🥵😂😂
Seeing Benji cry had me crying. Love you two!
❤️❤️
I was literally thinking about you guys reacting to this last night ! ❤
🙌🙌 it’s finally happening haha
the comparison of philip as RANDALL FROM RECESS i'm dead 😂😂😂😂😂 loved this reaction! yall should check out the book- audiobook, if you dont wanna sit down to read. its a much deeper story i think! the movie works really well as a nice rom com, but the book is really something special ❤️❤️
I plan to, I just downloaded it on Audible lol
Do you ever think about how Henry was probably all silly and nervous about that first text message lol like that was kind of a bold move to just text him
This is our Christmas miracle : Benji FINALLY cried !!!! Now we know : he's an happy crier !
😂😂🎅🎄
This was such a fun reaction and you two are just so cute ❤
🥰🥰
Benji said he saw no lube but it was there on the bedside table. Also two condom wrappers on the other table. And I love that they added those details.
Great added details, definitely wasn’t focused on the nightstand the first time around lmao
YESSSS. I’m so excited for this video!! I will def be here in 4hrs😌 Thank you for doing this reaction for us!!🫶🏻
🥰🥰
I’m hereeeee❤️❤️
Nicholas Galitzine is in another LGBT role that's coming out in spring 2024. It's called Mary and George. The trailer is out already if you want to react to that as well.
