I strongly disagree. Fritz the Cat was a product of its times, but I can hardly say it was entertaining or enjoyable to watch. I would say reading a synopsis of it is enough. It's essentially ONLY notable for being an X rated cartoon film. I saw it 30 years ago merely because of this, but it was entirely forgettable and unenjoyable.
We really need a Blu-Ray of this film, seeing that MGM dvd is long out of print. Maybe Shout! Factory could give us a proper special edition Blu-Ray. Haters be damned, I actually love this movie for it's sheer outlandishness. How often have you seen a full on cat orgy on film? You haven't. Except for this film. This is film that is only funny after you've had a bit of wacky tabaky. Then, it's a revelation. Fritz's constantly trying to fit in, his failed ambition, his dropping out of college. In my opinion, and I may be reaching here, but I think the movie is great, because it's really about a college kid who's bored, confused and also, a bit of a sociopath.
Just finished watching "Crumb," the documentary about Robert Crumb whose cartoons this movie is based on. That man had no right to call anything twisted.
You have to feel badly for Crumb's brother, Charles. He committed suicide after the film was made. Both men were basically, well, mentally unique. All the people in Crumb's family appear to be artists. And I really hated Fritz the Cat, but Crumb was a very interesting film. I do not agree with Robert Crumb's politics at my current age. He has the same political leanings I did, when I was in college. I'm surprised he's not grown out of it, but, well, he's unique.
10:30 - "that was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my entire life" - lol - I love his response - just the way he states it is so hilariously blunt - love it XD
Fritz the Cat is a horrible movie to go into blindly. It's a huge product of its time. I could talk about Bakshi all day as he is my favorite director. Knowing that he came from working for Disney and this was his first feature film changes so much about the "humorless" cartoony qualities. Their one good point is about the pool-scene death of Duke. It was definitely done better in Bakshi's next film, Heavy Traffic.
I agree. Plus, a lot of what Matt and Craig were criticizing were things that the movie was borrowing from the comic, like the lack of story, the joylessness, etc. These were deliberate, so you can't rightfully say that they were errors.
As someone who lived through the sixties, Fritz the Cat is absolutely the best depiction of the time period. It's better than Easy Rider, The Graduate or Bob and Ted and Carol and Alice. Hippies, intellectuals, Blacks, cops, revolutionaries... they're all there.
My mom and dad also lived through the sixties and they also thought it depicted the period fairly well... They also thought it was a worthless p.o.s. as far as entertainment value goes. I didn't live through the sixties, but I am still upset to have had my time so badly used. I found it insulting that the makers thought they had made a movie worth charging people to see. Having said that, you have your right to your opinion. That's my real point. Neither of us has proven anything. We've just voiced an opinion. The only error that we can possibly have made is thinking we have proven anything.🤷♂️ (Walden DOESN'T have a plot. It isn't a "plot" book.)
I think in western culture, animations are just so associated with comedies. Even in semi serious western animations there is comedic relief for no other reason to just have it in there. At least that's what I see when people always associate animations with comedies.
FRITZ THE CAT!!! I love that movie. It's pretty dark though...although the sequel is way worse and way weirder. Also, Craig, keep winking. It's adorable.
Matt, your gift of Felix the Cat and the remark of eyes going back and forth is interesting, because it made me think of the clock you are referring to. However, those clocks, although in many ways resemble Felix the cat, they are not Felix the Cat clocks! I learned this the hard way when looking for said clock on ebay and not finding what I was after. In a related search however, kit cat clocks showed up, and I was delighted to learn that the kit cat clock company is still in operation and still making new clocks. I purchased one right then in there to bring a bit of simple joy into the house, as his little eyes dart back and forth.
I was commenting and recommending they check this movie out when they announced they were doing X-rated films. I'm glad they decided to check it out, great episode.
You know what movie should have been in the seen it? Rear window: this Hitchcock classic defines the effective bottle movie, and keeps you engaged and on the edge of your seat until the end
I remember watching Friz the Cat, when I was about 12 (when my parents first got a Betamax player and hired shed loads of films,) but don't remember a thing about. On that same day I watched The Secret of NIMH and remember how great and dark Disney it was......Have you SEEN IT?
I've been watching you guys for years and only just realized that Craig came up with the term "Talent Bomb" - I've been using it in conversation like it's a well-known term!

Fritz the Cat seems like the type of character to incite an animated character revolt. He would likely say "You know you have owners that own you, right?! Don't take it from your creators anymore!"
Great episode! I always look forward to this show, and whenever a new one goes up I drop whatever I'm doing to watch it. :3 Please keep making this show, it is one of my favorite things on TH-cam.
Have you guys seen The Astronaut Farmer? Me and my sister were forced into watching it by my grandfather, and I still don't know what to make of it. Just wanted to hear your take. Thanks.
I would be very interested if you would discuss your feelings about short films in an episode. One of my favorite films of all time is Wes Anderson's "Hotel Chevalier." As I am sure you both have "Seen It!,"what do you think? What is your opinion of short films in general? Thanks!
Hey Guys! Big fan of the show. I have never taken the time to watch many of the movies you two have suggested until tonight when I watched The Sunset Limited. The original premise intrigued me and I wanted to thank you for the outstanding suggestion. I Thoroughly enjoyed Tommy Lee Jones playing such a vulnerable character.
When they first mentioned movies that take place in one location only, I immediately thought of 12 Angry Men. I just watched it in my business law class.
Ugh. Guys, there's social-symbolism of the late '60s in EVERY scene and is autobiographical to Bakshi, especially the crow always "stuck behind the 8 ball" trying so hard but the "white" Fritz has it easy, then only freedom by way of death, the table a metaphor for life. Please reconsider! Like Monty Python, just a series of vignettic metaphors. It was not supposed to be funny or a comedy. It was a social statement.
+Mike Cronis Agreed. These guys don't get it... and I'm not saying "Everyone who doesn't like it must not 'get' it", either. These guys think it's an unsuccessful comedy. It's not a comedy. Like you said, it's a social statement.
+Mike Cronis Your comment is so right! Either one of this guys didn't switched on his brain before commenting Fritz the cat either he votes for Trump..(lol)

Or could it be both, much like the source material? And to be fair, the premise is about seeing a film that on if not both have not seen. So I can see why the review may not be that in depth as it could be. I do agree that doing a little research on Bakashi himself would have given them a bit more insight as to why the characters were portrayed the way they were.......and I won't advise them to watch Bakashi's Coonskin if they were not so happy with Fritz. I will point out again that research would possibly make these reviews a little more entertaining. Don't get me wrong. I love this program, but I do get a bit frustrated when I see obvious things that could be shared with the audience, as well as the obvious being important to their own assessment. With that in mind, I guess it wouldn't hurt for them to strengthen their knowledge as to the film they happen to be showing. They have left out some pretty obvious stuff when reviewing certain classics. Pitney Swope comes to mind when they didn't recognize Huggy Bear playing a size able part . Other than that, I dig what they do

Great show, gents, and I can't wait to see the film noir episode next week as its one of my favorite genres. A friend of mine (who just happens to be a drugged-addicted faux-revolutionary) owns a t-shirt of Fritz the Cat and often tells me to watch it. And now I dont have to. Cheers!
I'm 19 and not such a cinephile, so I don't usually watch old movies (i.e. from before 1990), but I saw 12 Angry Men (1957) with my brother and absolutely *loved* it.
Honestly after seeing this, I feel like Fritz is a film that could see a real modern revitalization. 16:40 the domain for the podcast is for sale apparently, and all the episodes on Stitcher etc. have invalid urls. Is there a way to still listen to the episodes you guys were on?
You've probably mentioned it already, but Cube is a very low budget sci-fi bottle movie Twilight Zone thingy where they use one and half rooms to portray many rooms just by changing the room's colour. It starts off really well and is very unpredictable throughout even if it does end in a very silly slasher bloodbath.
Quite the coincidence here! I started watching this episode and reccomended you to see The Man from Earth, only to fidn out later in the video you had a whole segment about it! Great movie in my opinion though!
Hooray for Canadian movies. I used to live near Pontypool. Much like Toronto ("Tarana") the locals don't tend to pronounce the 't' in Pontypool. Local dialect facts!
I recommend Lars and The Real Girl with Ryan Gostling. A very interesting and refreshing take on the classic romcom that almost had me in tears. Seen it?
I love how Craig gets so visibly angry whenever he’s subjected to a bad movie. He’s such a lover of the art of film he considers it sacrilege to make one poorly
Craig has an unhealthy shade of Matrix green after the film
Fritz the Cat is just one of those movies you need to watch. it's not good or bad. You just need to watch it for the experience.
I actually love this film. It's one of those movies you put on during a smoke fest with friends and you just laugh at the random scenes.

16:40 the domain for the podcast is for sale apparently, and all the episodes on Stitcher etc. have invalid urls. Is there a way to still listen to the episodes you guys were on?
That picture is the LP Sleeve for "Sticky Fingers", by The Rolling Stones.
I have to ask, cause it's been bugging me for some time...why the Spanish version of An Inconvenient Truth in the opening credits?
Hooray for Canadian movies. I used to live near Pontypool. Much like Toronto ("Tarana") the locals don't tend to pronounce the 't' in Pontypool. Local dialect facts!
I agree so much with Craig's assessment.
Fritz! I was hoping you would review this. I think I have seen it about 5 times.
I loved 12 Angry Men. One of my favorite movies of all time.
I'm so glad you watch these movies so I don't have to.
You guys should watch Hero. An outstanding Chinese film and one of my favorites.
That guys mouth doesn't move
I recommend Lars and The Real Girl with Ryan Gostling. A very interesting and refreshing take on the classic romcom that almost had me in tears. Seen it?
I love how Craig gets so visibly angry whenever he’s subjected to a bad movie. He’s such a lover of the art of film he considers it sacrilege to make one poorly
