At long last, Craig and Matt gear up to watch Paul Verhoeven's 1997 epic, Starship Troopers. Arachnophobes beware.
In Seen It, we discuss graduates, cold souls, simple plans and cartoon rabbits.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.
I like that both actors they mentioned ended up in Star Wars movies
It's pretty wild, Adam Driver especially felt like a long shot and he ended up carrying the Star Wars movies.
LMAO! "You're not foolin' anyone Neil"
I really enjoy rewatching this episode. Every time I see Matt realize it's Jake Busey I just laugh.
Craig totally predicted Star Wars.
Watching this after the new Star Wars and laughing at their prediction for Adam Driver
"Time to kick some thorax" must be one of the best Starship Troopers lines I have ever heard.
one of the best movies ever. so far ahead of its time.
That is the cutest shirt I've ever seen, Craig.
You only say that because Craig is wearing it
Starship Troopers has always been one of my favorite films. It was a pleasure seeing you guys watch it!
The unrelenting gore was appreciated in Starship Troopers. Though I don't know why it's such a surprise considering how gory both Robocop and Total Recall are; like ridiculously so.
I don't think I was implying he was a newcomer. Regardless of how well established he is, his career certainly can "go places".
I was about 6 months into my Navy enlistment when I saw this movie in the theater. Loved it then, and love it now. MEDIC!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy you guys liked Starship Troopers! I grew up with it and I was terrified of the idea of you not liking the film. Keep on making those episodes! Love the show!
Jade Warrior is from Finland and Troll Hunter is norwegian though!
GariBUsians!! Thanks for the shout out!
Harvey may not have had those movies talked about but he/she had a good time watching `em.
Craig, what did you do during those 10 minutes of Singing in the Rain that made you fall asleep?
Brain bug's going to need a new fake nose; go to the doctor and get a prosthesis proboscis prognosis.
I felt like the book was for young men; gonna be very gung ho especially at that time. I loved how PV kept that feel. and the matter-of-factness of the shower scene.
Edge of tommorw reminds me of star ship.troopers a little
Whoa! Revisiting this after 9 years! During the opening, I kept thinking, "Matt's on the wrong side of the room!"
Seen It? Have you seen "Scream of the Wolf" with Peter Graves and Clint Walker? The performance of Clint Walker in some key points of the story (such as a meeting his friends at a local lounge) is more threatening then the action/suspense scenes.
Thank you for finally watching "Melrose Place in Space" aka Starship Troopers!
I lost it when Matt said "Now that's pod racing" good ole 5 in the morning laughter is the best way to wake up
Oh god. This movie traumatized me as a kid. My older brother used to love this movie and would always watch this and for awhile was obsessed with it. Worst part about it, he would make watch it with him.... he was 7 years old..... i was only 4 and i still remember the scenes that traumatized me with great details.
I actually watched the cartoon of this back in the day, and now I understand where they got all the special effects from.
Hopefully Fantastic Planet will be watched another time. It's actually one of my favorite movies!
Star Ship Troopers and Mads Mikkelsen in the same episode? You spoil me.
Have you seen A Royal Affair, staring Mikkelsen himself, Alicia Vikander, and Mikkel Folsgaard? It's a fantastic Danish film focused around Danish King Cristian VII's rule, and his wife's love affair with the royal physician (Mikkelsen).
Would love to see another foreign film month!
Great episode as always; keep up the great work!
I love you guys, crack me up. That's all, thanks for your stellar content.
7:00 Wow! What a genuine reaction from Matt! :D
I saw that movie in the theater. It was one of those movies that I think you should see once, but that's probably often enough.
First time to finally watch this show and FREAKIN' LOVED IT!!!
Now that's pod racing! XD I love you guys
I never liked the movie even when I saw it the first time in the theatre but listening to you guys talk about it has made me want to sit down and watch it again. As for Craig's comment about Heinlein there is a lot of conjecture as to whether or not he wrote starship troopers as a pro-military love letter. There was an article on the locus magazine website some time back that talks about it.
I think the poor actor choices where somewhat deliberate in order to better show the satire propaganda film nature of it. Melodrama overload like a 90210 in space type of thing.
Yeah they didnt really seem to get it.
Totally agree i find it odd they didnt see it that way.
Good job bringing the book in! Did not disappoint :D
As much as I adore this show, I must savor the episodes where Matt and Craig watch a film that I have actually seen before. :)
I also love Matt and Craig's genuine reactions to the first gory death scene.
I love the scene in The Graduate where he just stands on he bottom of the pool after getting his diving gear xD
I just rewatched this movie today and for the first fifth or so of it I thought "This came out of nowhere, did they add this for the TV version?''
Have you seen Videodrome? (1983) The special makeup effects are amazing. Bless Rick Baker for making such amazing art. He also worked on An American Werewolf in London which happens to be my all time favorite movie. :)
Watching this video in hindsight, with a knowledge of Chad Vader, it's hilarious to hear Craig mention Adam Driver as the next up and coming actor and know he becomes the latest Vader wannabe!
Glad you guys like this movie I remember when I 1st watched ages ago n I loved it.
Top action/sci fi
And Jake Busey is a freak hahaha
I would love to see your reaction to Whistle Down the Wind, possibly my favourite film of all time. Full of whimsy and innocence, with a great soundtrack. Even in black and white you can smell the grass of the countryside.
I never in a million years thought I'd see Rue McClanahan show up in this movie, if you'd told me one of the Golden Girls would play a part in this movie I would have thought you were crazy, but I loved this movie
I found the romance subplot to be a satire of that as well. The characters true love interests are murdered causing them to settle for each other in the end. It parallels the beginning of their simple high school life and how hollow their existence is after the horrors of war. The true tragedy is our characters are unaware of the hellish reality they exist in. The line "it's afraid" punctuates how the humans are terrifying and their ignorance of their malice makes them even more horrifying.
This is easily one of my favorite movies ever, I grew up watching it and have seen it dozens of times. I don't know if I could ever see a fault with it because I grew up with it and just love it. The actually great things about it and the goofy and bad things (Denise Richards) just make it that much better, I don't know how to explain it but it's got just enough cheesy and bad stuff that it somehow makes it better. I think it helps outline the satire element, which to me has always been clear.
"America, where are your cannibals?" Wisconsin. Gein and Dahmer
Another great episode!!
Kinda late but my body has never been more ready for some WTTB.
yup
Just now realizing that the Starkid musical "Starship" is probably more of a spoof of this movie than anything else. I always thought it was just a sci-fi spoof in general.
Why didn't Rico and the gang just cover themselves in Citronella? Or bring a big can of raid. Or build a bunch of roach motels...seems like a lot of options here.
Have you gents seen "The Road to Wellville"? One of my favorite mid 90's movies.
Speaking of Hopkins, have you seen The Lion in Winter? Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn share some of the best dialogue I've seen and the film went on to win three Academy Awards in 1968.
Please consider watching the 2011 Independent Film, Terri. It's the story of a 15 year old high school student dealing with the pressures of his young life. It's got some great performances and a solid story. John C. Reilly shows he's got some dramatic talent, and although the movie is primarily a drama, it is far from humorless. Pretty sure even Ernesto and the Ol' Leather Couch would enjoy this film, as well. Love the show, please keep up the good work!!!
If you like Mads Mikkelsen, check out "Valhalla Rising." Mads doesn't say a single word of dialogue and yet still conveys more intensity than any other actor in the movie, a true testament of how good of an actor he is.
"Don't pound on the glass, it sounds like shotguns going off to him." LOL
thanks. have to check it out.
Now that you've mentioned Mads Mikkelsen in your show, I think you should watch one of his latest films. The Hunt (Jagten) from 2012 comes to mind first. The movie is Danish but that shouldn't bother you all that much. It was a huge success in the annual Scandinavian film festival along with the Icelandic film called The Deep (Djúpið). The Hunt was my biggest surprise of that year and one of the best films of the early 2010's. The movie really grips you and doesn't let you go until the very end
Thank you for talking about one of my favourite movies of all time. And if anyone ever happens to see it coming up on german television, don't watch it. It's about half an hour shorter than the original and every single scene that helps you understand that it's a satire is cut out along with every single scene that contains gore. The movie doesn't even make sense the way they show it. It's really hard to follow the plot too.
Robert Carlyle is Scottish :P
Have you ever seen Pandora's box? It stars the wonderful Lulu and really is a groundbreaking piece of characterization for a silent flick.
great episode
Kate Gillamette! I recall that name from Beer and Board Games sponsored episode where a piece was named the gillamette.
Yeah, Dean Norris.
I can kind of relate to Matt's surprise at Craig reading the whole book. Heinlein is an amazing author, but his books, especially some of his more well known books, almost reach unwieldy lengths. If they weren't edited down, then they would certainly be unwieldy, without a doubt. As for the pro-military thing, I agree that it's very pro-military, but I wouldn't say that's automatically a bad thing. It's not "300" pro-military where the militarism feels kinda chauvinistic and jingoistic. The army in Starship Troopers is pretty diverse and progressive. It's not composed of a single ethnicity or nationality, with none being excluded or discriminated against, everything about them is coed and the women are freely and openly serving combat roles alongside the men. The closest area that Starship Troopers has to 300 and the Spartan society that it's often compared to is that service to the Federation is mandatory to be a citizen. But whereas 300 and Sparta demanded that it be military service, Starship Troopers' Federation allows people to serve in the active military or in noncombat roles such as teachers, medics, military intelligence, or even psychics, emphasizing that mental acuity is just as important to the Federation as physical ability. Ultimately, I see Starship Troopers as a sort of thematic pair with The Day the Earth Stood Still, and if you take the lessons from both those stories into account, you basically get "Hey, we're all humanity and we should all get along with each other, because we're all people, and we shouldn't go into space looking to start fights with other races. But if an alien species comes to us and tries to attack us, then we're gonna kick their asses until we send them running back to their home planets."
I don't think it was all that long. It was slow, and it took the time to very deliberately explain itself (which makes it very easy to catch people who lie about reading it, their arguments and criticisms are almost always undone by something deliberately stated in the book, almost like Heinlein could see the false narratives coming) but if you find the subject matter interesting it's still engaging enough. I've read it in one sitting before when I had a day to waste. Even as for being "pro-military" I wouldn't even go that far. It describes a military as a necessity, not a virtue, a practicality that can't be done away with. While there are good things about the military described in the book, there are also bad things, just as highlighted.
It shows personal responsibility as a good thing, and the military as one route to learning it, and not the only one, even though it's the one the book focuses on.
Fun fact: Who Framed Roger Rabbit is 'Chinatown with cartoons' because many elements of the script were taken from the never-completed third film in the Chinatown series.
YES. because this is the internet and you can't really miss it, it will be there when you come home.
ASAC SCHRADER
Man, so far we are two for two for favorite actors. I, too, love Mads Mikkelsen's work. I mean, just about everything I've seen of his has been really really good: Valhalla Rising, the Pusher trilogy, Flammen und Citronen, The Green Butchers, etc. If you guys did one of his movies, that would be cool. Also, was the black guy in S.T. that dances to Dixie, was that Carver from The Wire? It looked like him.
This show is great.
I really like this movie and not only that, I think the soundtrack is great. Same guy made the soundtrack to RoboCop too.
I love Swedish movies (Jade Warrior, Troll hunter, Let The Right One In) but man are they slow paced!
Yes! I love mads mikkelsen! I'm so glad they mentioned him!
I liked this film and I remember liking the cartoon too
Love that Sgt. Zim is Mr. Krabs himself, Clancy Brown.
Dammit, Craig! Stop calling it the "big leather couch"! xD
You guys are right about the gore in this movie, this was really one of the last action films to have that amount of it.
I love Craig for liking Starship Troopers and because he will watch anything with David Strathairn in it. Even Eight Men Out? Scene it?
Billy Bob Thorton is one of my favorite actors.
I'm relatively new to the basement but you guys put me onto some good films so first of all I'd like to say thank you. I really liked this movie when it came out. Paul Verhoeven's one of my favorite directors and his movies all seem a bit satirical to me. Since you mentioned David Cronenberg, I have to ask; have you seen Existenz?
Another great episode lads
The planet of thae apes is one of my favorite sci-fi series from 1968 to 1973 its still amazing films. Great cast, characters, and story line. can you tell us who is your favorite character in the series. Mine is a tie between cornelius Zira and Ceasar.
Tim Curry had been my Michael Shannon since about forever. The guy is taking the scene from anyone in anything you watch. Catch him in Oscar with Sylvester Stallone for a demonstration of I enunciation skills. Truly a presence to be reckoned with on stage or camera.
The DVD commentary for this film is excellent! The writer said that American's love war & fascism & studied propaganda films to write this movie. Heinlein's book has a military society, where non-military personel weren't allowed a say in gov't but did enjoy the peace & prosperity provided by the military. One thing that most people miss is that the bugs kill a Terran settlement on one of their planets & the Terrans start the war.
I used to love this movie when I was a kid and I never got the military satire, I thought it was just trying to be goofy. Then again, I was a kid.
Awesome.
Heinlein's social theories (here militaristic) were as varied and changing as his book subjects. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, in which a free society is developed on Luna, is a must read.
Nice Ghost in the Machine Matt, great album by the Police!
I'm a british gangster film fan and I'll like to know if you two might have seen any of the following films and have any thoughts on them: Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, 44 Inch Chest, Sexy Beast, Get Carter (1971), Gangster No.1, Layer Cake, RockNRolla, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, Revolver.
I'm a huge fan of each and every one of these films and Lock Stock happens to be my most favorite film of all time. If you have any others to recommend that would be stellar.
Gattca is one of my favorite movies
Seen it? "Visioneers"- kind of has a Brazil feel to it. The pacing is kinda slow, but it fits the story and it never drags. Parts of it are definitely very funny.
Its also up. So go enjoy.
I'm diggin' the Police record in the back. :)
Matt, as a 'Sconnie, you know where our cannibals are. *evil laugh*
Have you guys seen The Blood of Heroes? A Rutger Hauer movie from 1989. Awesome flick.
Hey, fellas. Just wondering if you've seen Brazil by Terry Gilliam. If not, I hope to see it on the show someday.
If you enjoy Mads Mikkelsen, might I recommend Valhalla Rising. It's directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Bronson, and Drive.
Love the movie
I love Mads stuff. But, I don't recall having seen a great deal of his work. Are there any films in particular you could recommend? I love how I'm using you as an expert on Mads' career just for being Danish.
The beautiful black comedy Adam's Apples is also a must see for Mikkelsen fans.
One thing you guys didn't mention was that this movie, has the record for the highest number of bullets shot on screen.
He's like the top Danish export in actors, Mads or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the two most recognizable actors from Denmark, at least for me.
Please consider watching "Survive Style 5+", a fantastic japanese film and one of my favourite movies ever.
