Hi. My name is Zoe and I am 10 & I am in High School. My English Teacher loves to show episodes of Welcome to the Basement for our weekly film analysis. He hasn’t shown all episodes though. One of my favourite episodes is Swing Time. I really like old movie and dancing. Some of my favourites we watch every Christmas are White Christmas, Pocketful of Miracles and It’s a Wonderful Life. I want to make movies when I am older. You guys make me laugh and inspire me to make my own movie review Vlogs.
Great review! And here's some trivia: first day of shooting Frank Sinatra himself shows up on set with some bodyguards, finds assistant director Paul Rapp, bluntly states he's holding Rapp PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for daughter Nancy's safety, then turns around and leaves. After shitting a brick or two, Rapp decides the best way to handle this is slip a couple of the less-dumb Hell's Angels a few extra bucks to guard Nancy (real Hell's Angels and their bikes were used in this film.) Sure enough, at the lunch break that same day, Nancy goes to sit in her chair and some random Angel yanks it away and she falls on her ass. Her two guards immediately beat the shit out the guy who pulled the chair and sent him packing and no one bothered Nancy afterward (Paul Rapp later said of the Hell's Angels "Money talked.") This was the sort of thing Roger Corman had to deal with for the whole shoot (Bruce Dern got punched out because a couple Angels suddenly decided they didn't want him wearing their 'colors') and I'm frankly amazed he was able to complete the filming unscathed.
Mea Culpa. After trying to find a My Name Is Nobody on dvd for a while, I realize why you may not have watched it; I guess it's not on dvd. But you could watch the vhs (make sure it's the full version)! :D A few good gangster movies: Infernal Affairs, True Romance, Grosse Pointe Blank BTW SoA is still saying things like 'Taco benders', it means they're rude.
Great now i know where the dialog from the song from Primal Scream comes from, the song is "Loaded" and it starts with that "we wanna be free..." dialog, this was very good COngrats guys :D
Just finished watching the Blair Witch Project for the first time, about ten minutes ago. Admittedly, I might be biased coming fresh out of the experience, but I thought it was great top-to-bottom, acting included. I was shocked that Heather Donahue "won" a Razzie for it. Then again, maybe a history of watching bad found footage on TH-cam has lowered my expectations for acting.
Thanks! ^_^ I'm always excited for your show. It's refreshing to watch movie reviews done by folks who have deep knowledge about the craft. Really thoughtful and funny.
its weird i dont stay interested in this show to watch it as its uploaded but every couple of months im like i need some welcome to the basement and catch up in like a day
Speaking of Biker Films, have you guys watched George A. Romero's "Knightriders"? It's a pretty interesting take on RSCA society and tribe mentality in counterculture in the 60's and 70's.
The glitch that happened to Matt's viewing of Ghost Dog happened to me too when I first watched Amadeus. And because the film was about classical composers and classical music was playing, I too thought it was an intentional choice and watched for about ten minutes or so before I thought to fix it.
actually the song Loaded by Primal Scream is in the opening scene of the movie and it samples that speech, that's probably why it's used in The World's End.
I liked your comments about the movie for the book The Road. I liked it, though I doubt I will ever watch the movie again. It didn't move me as well as the book, which is odd, since I normally prefer movies over books. My main issue was that I thought the boy they cast was too old. In the novel, the boy seems to be less than 10, possibly around 8, but the kid they cast was around 12 or 13. That really messed up the story for me, since it is hard to imagine the story events lasting that long.
I love the Holy Grail/Life of Brian debate at 19:10. I have been having this same debate with my friends (and myself) for years. I could literally write a series of essays on the reasons why I prefer each Python film.
Craig told a story like that, but I had to cut it because it was too long. He watched it in Latin class -- his Latin teacher somehow knew that there was Latin conjugation in the movie, but not full frontal nudity.
For your gangster movie you should watch Boondock Saints, a movie I wasn't sure about going into, but came out loving due to a fantastic and innovative use of flashbacks in addition to the portrayal of foreign mafia's presence even in out own country.
One of my favorite movie memories is seeing BLAIR WITCH with my sister... towards the end of the movie she turned to me and with a great amount of fear in her eyes she asked - THIS ISN'T REAL IS IT?
TRIVIA !!!! What totally SWEET song directly quotes (or samples) the "We want to be free...." speech? I'll give you a hint, the song is totally BADASSS!!
I would love for you guys to watch "Star Wars Holiday Special" from the 70's. I do a podcast review of movies on Friday nights and I made my co-hosts and viewers watch that. I knew full well how terrible it was and still made them watch it. They hadn't heard of it. What fun I had! I know it was a tv special, but deserved recognition for the aneurism is causes! :)
Ha ha. I only saw the top line of your comment and read it as "The Knights who say NEE! is quite amusing...almost". That's exactly how I feel about it. It's almost amusing.
Nice Cheap Trick product placement on this one. Great episode, guys. By the way, SLC Punk! is a great movie to watch. done on $80,000. It's Matthew Lillard's favorite movie that he's ever done, and i can see why. I'd love to see what you guys think of it.
Have you guys seen the 2007 animated French film "Persepolis?" It's an excellent autobiographical drama, as well as an effective, intricate, and entertaining coming-of-age story. I highly recommend it!
I've been watching this show since the beginning and every single time the credits get to this part 1:07, i see YO SOY SAM in the bottom right and laugh. Every damn time.
I thought one of the most funny anecdotes from Roger Corman was when he was making these biker movies he took LSD in the Redwood Forest to see if he could replicate what he saw and put it on film, but he said on his budget he couldn't.
We wanna be free to do what we wanna do...And we wanna get loaded. or is that from the song "Loaded" i'm not sure, but i am sure that came from this movie.
Having seen the most recent run of the play, I'll throw something new onto the "probably-a-Seen-It" pile: the 1964 film adaptation of Gore Vidal's The Best Man. It's one of those Henry Fonda movies that deserves remake consideration, at least in my opinion.
I like it better for pretty much the same reason Matt does: It works better as an actual MOVIE. I also think Biggus Dickus and "How shall we fuck off, oh lord?" are funnier than anything in Holy Grail, which is still a hilarious movie.
In the Life of Brian, the only scene i was completely confused by, was when he gets abducted by aliens. BUT now it makes more sense than ever after seeing that some people believe that aliens are our god in some way, and i think that is why they put that in there.
Can't believe this is one of your least watched episodes, it's one of my favourites of yours! Nothing like nazi bikers doing horse to bring the hilarity.

"..and yet they MEW!" haha Craig cracks me up!
Never knew what the dialogue clip at the start of "Primal Scream - Loaded" was until this review, thanks guys!
... tacobenders? "But everything changed when the Taco Nation attacked!"
But I believe that The Loser can save the world.

It's been raining all day and watching this while sipping coffee is just perfection.
The unpicked genre cards will return someday, so for now they will stay a secret
Thank you.
You scared me half-to-death with that no spoiler sound.
I just watched a documentary on Grindhouse movies and this movie was mentioned! It was a very interesting documentary.
If we're talking about genre and style of noir in color film,, you guys should watch the Cohen Brother's Blood Simple.
Awesome. Please make these more often. Every 2 weeks isn't enough, man.
Holy grail was great as a musical. I watched the opening of it I'm Chicago with all the unedited scenes and it was great.
Great now i know where the dialog from the song from Primal Scream comes from, the song is "Loaded" and it starts with that "we wanna be free..." dialog, this was very good COngrats guys :D
I've been wondering where that speech at the begining of The World's End was from. Thanks guys!

I saw someone mention a Primal Scream song, but also The World's End samples that monologue about freedom! Neat!
Have you ever read "Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga" by Hunter S. Thompson? The general rapeiness of the Hell's Angels is well documented
Nice Cheap Trick album. Great show as always.
Hey Matt, the creator of the Blair Witch project is actually shooting his next movie in my hometown, Frederick, MD!
Speaking of Biker Films, have you guys watched George A. Romero's "Knightriders"? It's a pretty interesting take on RSCA society and tribe mentality in counterculture in the 60's and 70's.
Love the show and wondered if you have seen Bedknobs and Broomsticks? It is one of my favorite Disney movies.
8:22 Can't watch this scene without expecting a Primal Sceam song to start up.
We want to get loaded.
If it has American International on it at the beginning, it's gold!
My favourite film of all time
I love the movie Ghost Dog! It's been one of my favorites since I saw it at the cinema when it first came out!
"...the general rapiness of them all..." bwahahahaha well played Craig
8:30, it's the beginning of Loaded by Primal Scream.
The glitch that happened to Matt's viewing of Ghost Dog happened to me too when I first watched Amadeus. And because the film was about classical composers and classical music was playing, I too thought it was an intentional choice and watched for about ten minutes or so before I thought to fix it.

Great show.
By the way: Have you seen Le Professionnel with Jean-Paul Belmondo?
Great episode guys!
The speech that Blues gives must have inspired the speech at the end of the movie "At Worlds End"
I liked Marlon Brando in "The Wild Ones"...."What are you rebelling against, Johnny?" "Whatta ya got?" Brilliant!
Craig told a story like that, but I had to cut it because it was too long. He watched it in Latin class -- his Latin teacher somehow knew that there was Latin conjugation in the movie, but not full frontal nudity.
Final Cut X

Have you guys seen Real Steel from 2011. Its a great boxer film with a robot twist showing the bonding of father and son.
TRIVIA !!!! What totally SWEET song directly quotes (or samples) the "We want to be free...." speech? I'll give you a hint, the song is totally BADASSS!!

I like that you quote Fritz the Cat, Blue the Bunny specifically for a movie about a biker named Blue.
Also, have you seen Driller Killer.
The soundtrack is made by Ennio Morricone, it has one of his most famous song: Chi Mai.
It adds to the basementness.
Nice Cheap Trick product placement on this one. Great episode, guys.
By the way, SLC Punk! is a great movie to watch. done on $80,000. It's Matthew Lillard's favorite movie that he's ever done, and i can see why. I'd love to see what you guys think of it.

When I saw the Wild Angels album at a vinyl store, I just began to laugh thinking about this episode.
I know that speech Blues gives from Mudhoney, but never knew where it came from till seeing this
Interesting. I saw World's End but I don' remember exactly how that speech went. I do remember it was similar.
My two suggestions for you to watch are still The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, and Phase IV
Which editing software do you use for these episodes Matt??
I've been watching this show since the beginning and every single time the credits get to this part 1:07, i see YO SOY SAM in the bottom right and laugh. Every damn time.
What were the other genres that didn't get picked? My curiosity is killing me!
Love the show! Just gotta recommend the new movie "Prisoners"- it might just be my new favorite flick. Keep it up guys! :)
-Greetings from Boston
What happened in it?
It was a Pringles commercial where the guy was seeing his boss as Darth Vader.
Have you watched Hobo with a Shotgun? I really liked the use of colour in that movie
Blame TH-cam. It took them 15 hours to process the video
Also had the guy that used to do Backyard FX in it. Can't remember his name.
Well now I know where Primal Scream sampled that speech from!
I thought one of the most funny anecdotes from Roger Corman was when he was making these biker movies he took LSD in the Redwood Forest to see if he could replicate what he saw and put it on film, but he said on his budget he couldn't.
Hey guys, great show, although I wish you would watch films which have more substance, more like when you revised Blue Velvet, thank you
its more likely a refrence to the primal scream song as they refrence music from that era alot in that film... twist the melon etc
The Changeling from 1980 with George C. Scott is a great horror that you should watch if you haven't.
We wanna be free to do what we wanna do...And we wanna get loaded. or is that from the song "Loaded" i'm not sure, but i am sure that came from this movie.
Speaking of punk bands, with the Ramones reference, Sloppy Seconds sampled this film for one of their songs.
What were the other movie categories?
The commentary was especially funny this episode.
Films noir can be in color, such as Gene Tierney's best movie, Leave Her to Heaven. Have either of you Seen It?
I'd say that Brick is a good neo-noir.
Having seen the most recent run of the play, I'll throw something new onto the "probably-a-Seen-It" pile: the 1964 film adaptation of Gore Vidal's The Best Man. It's one of those Henry Fonda movies that deserves remake consideration, at least in my opinion.
"The Wild Angels" Quote from the wake was used in the film "The World's End". Was that a coincidence? I think not.
Looks like it.Well done, I suppose!
WTTB you have to reveal the unpicked for our curiosity.
You guys should watch the Billy Jack film series. It starts with a biker film "Born Losers"
I just saw Movie 43. That might be a talent bomb..
Oh dang. They done already covered ghost dog. Well that answers that.
Am I crazy or was this video edited so the color in your shots matched the clips from the movie?
at 13:32 what is that noise from?
Hey have you guys ever seen electroma? Its a very interesting movie by french musicians daft punk
I like it better for pretty much the same reason Matt does: It works better as an actual MOVIE. I also think Biggus Dickus and "How shall we fuck off, oh lord?" are funnier than anything in Holy Grail, which is still a hilarious movie.
Just watched The Road last night. Brilliant movie.
You guys should watch Interview with a vampire, if you haven't already. The best vampire film there is in my opinion.
Please make more Dr. Moley.
In the Life of Brian, the only scene i was completely confused by, was when he gets abducted by aliens. BUT now it makes more sense than ever after seeing that some people believe that aliens are our god in some way, and i think that is why they put that in there.
I like them equally.
holy shi. its the worlds end
Can't believe this is one of your least watched episodes, it's one of my favourites of yours! Nothing like nazi bikers doing horse to bring the hilarity.
you guys should do Chicano movies like Boulevard Nights
I would like to see an episode with a Japanese theme, like the Gore Shock Ninja Zombie Robot Geisha Police Hunters! You guys know what I mean.
...with the most hard-core title.
Have you guys seens Pinwizard?
AWW Ernesto is so cute here.
