I also just realized that might be true...when the characters get cut-offed when they talk in EN is because they use the same lip sync for CN. So the length of sentences differ. So if the CN talking is shorter than the EN version, the EN version will get cut-offed. So i think kuro just used the same CN lip sync for all languages
I am interested to see how things will change when they are not enforcing accent changes. Especially since Scar's VA has not accent change and it is very clear when comparing him to others along with the fact that he did a good job from an acting perspective.
@@cordroush9075Same, especially in the cutscene where you interrogate him and he escapes after, his "power up" yelling felt so weird. But for the most part I thought he was alright
Yeah but in the museum thingy when he got captured the tone and expression of his voice didn't seem to fit his actual character expression He was too normal for that insane face. They missed the mark there
she sounds pretty good in jiyan's story quest, the camellya cutscene, and the final boss cutscene. i genuinely think its an issue with the voice directors and the higher-ups. they arent giving the necessary context
@@aarongallardo3684 So True, The moment I got to that part with that puzzle where Female Rover narrated all the stuff you had to do, I cringed so hard that I immediately switched to CN dub cus I can still kinda understand what they are saying ;-;
Im actually glad that i heard both VAs before the launch and chose male rover. Even though i like female rover’s design better, i still prioritized their voice and voicelines
Things that would probably make Yangyang acceptable. -pull back on the airy/whispy effect 50-75% -speed up delivery about 30% -stop using Rover unnecessarily
There was quite a bit of redundancy too. Some words were repeated even when it was already established and I can hear my English Teacher rage quitting if she saw this.
It's such a pity, because I think the VA actually got the tone right. When I hear her speak, it's the perfect tone of voice for a "sweet, gentle" character. I would love for her to be able to re-do her lines, speaking a bit faster, with a clearer mic, and with her natural accent so that she doesn't have to struggle all the time.
@@snipergirl21 This right here; I like Yangyangs voice. I think it was more of a matter of script than anything else. I do think there was about 3 scenes where she was supposed to sound desperate or in danger where her tone of voice kept the whisper and it was awkward, as if she was proof reading from a script, but other than that I liked the voices.
I’m like 90% sure they copy and pasted that 1 take where the VA said “Huanglong” right everywhere, because the intonation is really weird every time she says it.
@@ben-taobeneton3945 Bruh I must have downloaded the wrong game cuz the localization was so bad I almost had a stroke. couldn't go more than a few hours before dropping it. I don't wanna seem that I hate the game, I'm sure it's better now but there must be something that I don't get.
@@SolVulkannah you’re right, i couldn’t get past the english translation as a native english speaker, even a good dub can’t save a badly translated script
@@SolVulkan Yeah the localization is probably the worst I've seen in any game ever, it's unfortunate that parts of Wuthering's localization come close to how bad R1999's is.
They should have just let the British VAs use their natural accent. As an American, I can assure you that I don’t require English dubs to match my accent. Stellar Blade VAs have British accents and I’m fine with that.
Well... some people dislike British accents. And with how American accents are more ubiquitous, a lot of people who don't have English as their first language find working through a British accent more difficult, or so I assume. I do recall when learning English myself that I did have difficulties as well. I feel Kuro really wanted to go for broad appeal and that's why they decided American was the way to go. Of course if that was the case, then work with an American studio instead of compromising the work these people do for you by forcing an unnatural line delivery, but that's just my personal opinion.
Imo the language of the vo doesnt matter as much as the delivery. One of the reasons why many pp like jp vo so much is how proffessional they are at expressing ideas and emotions. Accent also gives alot of charm for the characters and the xenoblade series really demonstrates it well. I hope kuro can fix this issue in the future by letting va's speak in their natural accent
@@vetreas366 not liking your accent is genuinely so weird. It literally may be the weirdest thing I ever heard. Like wtf are you gonna do when you meet a British person… tell them their accent is bad?? (Not you specifically but this take is just weird and shows a weird form of prejudice.)
@@lequocbao5051 true. When the VA isn’t in total control of their character’s tone/voice, they won’t be confident in their line delivery and that will come across as wooden or emotionally unconvincing. Immersion is a spectrum. Like obviously we are aware that we are in the real world playing a fictional video game but shitty voice acting drags you that much closer to the real world and away from the fictional world you’re trying to temporarily escape to.
The voice acting for Scar and Jiyan are what keep me in the English dub. And with how often lines get cut during scenes. Otherwise, I would switch so fast.
I noticed this immediately. It was deeper than the voice acting. I could tell the actors really actually really good, but I felt the direction was all over the place. I think you were spot on that they didn't know the impact of the situations where they say each line. I also found issues with the sound design in parts, such as the clip you showed with Rover diving in against Scar. I switched to Japanese Voice acting and immediately noticed how much more I was enjoying the game. I cared more about each character and the story as a whole. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but when YangYang said Jinzhou, it was like they just inserted the name and it never flowed at all.
Honestly, this exactly. It really did seem like, on top of the weird situation with the accents, they just weren't given good direction most of the time. And then, even worse, in some cases, it seemed like they weren't even given very many takes at the scene to really figure out how they should approach it. And honestly, that really sucks. Cause, like you said, I could tell that these voice actors not only were actually good, but also that they were decently invested as well. Like, let them make the characters live. Instead of cutting off their chances of it pretty much immediately.
its the usual "what's the 1st/prioritized voice acting for this product" Just as resident evil sounds better in america VA than its japanese VA So is god of war on japan VA vs its america VA So far in this take, its square enix final fantasy that is equal in term of quality across all VA region Tldr, most chinese anime gacha game are meant to be voiced in japanese, even chinese, taiwanese & korean accept this nomenclature, the user base want it in japan, other voice are the extra I think Girls frontlines was an exception
What stood out to me was how many characters overly enunciate their words. Every single syllable is completely enunciated in a way of speaking that I believe is called hard attack. It doesn't sound very conversational and instead comes off as professional even clinical. Similar to how a national news anchor would talk. Knowing that it was an English cast trying to mask their accents really makes me feel bad for their situation.
maybe to cater to most of the ESL? but i suspect that over-enunciating words is a way to reduce, if not "remove" their accent. I've watched at least a couple of vtubers explain it this way.
Especially when you compare the actors changing their accent to someone like Scar who doesn't have to change his accent (at least from a short clip of his VA I saw he didn't), the difference is huge. I think letting them use their accents and having proper direction will elevate the dub, but I don't have much hope for saving YangYang. Her over pronunciation and sometimes mispronunciation and bad acting, also how her voice sounds like she is trying so hard to sound pleasant that it actually end up sounding off putting. We do know that Kuro is going to be handling it but we will have to wait and see how it turns out. Good thing is we always have other languages to choose from.
I think the over enunciation was legitimately only because of them trying to mask their accent and them not getting extra takes with the lines. If you got only a few takes for each line at best and you HAVE to hide your accent I think most people would focus more on the hiding of their accent than their actual performance. Personally I think whomever at kuro said “oh. They gotta have an American accent.” Or something similar to that needs to be slapped in the face with a tuna.
This is definitely a direction problem. That delivery could fit a different scenario but definitely not this one. An example scene where that line would fit would be if the camera performs a close up shot to the mc's eyes, says the line, and performs a lightning speed attack to intercept the target.
@@neumann7888 Of course it has different directors for each language. Not only does it make it easy to communicate with the VAs but it also adheres to the style of voice acting the different languages use.
Bro I was cooking some food and had it on auto play, then with all the dramatic sound effects, music and all, I just hear that line 😔 like damn girl what are you doing
I doubt they will re-record the voice acting for the beginning chapters of the game. However I am sure that they’ve learned from this and have had better voice direction in future chapters which weren’t under such a time crunch. I honestly didn’t mind the voice acting enough to switch to a different language, but yang-yangs voice for most of it was so weird that I was honestly questioning whether or not her voice was AI generated.
I watched tectone’s gacha cast with the VAs and they said that there was no voice direction. Basically they did not have a context on how they should tone their voices whether it be chasing somebody, in a fight etc. And they usually only get like 1 to 2 takes
That sounds like a _scripting_ issue if that's accurate then. As I understand it, the script should actually instruct the VA on how to deliver the lines (i.e. stage directions and such), and the director makes sure everything lines up and sounds correct. And considering PGR's EN dub, that's just makes it all the more bizarre (I know, different teams, but still).
Yeah unfortunately a lot of people are quick to blame the VA for no reason. A good director would not let such bad voice acting pass 😂 It's just crazy to me how unprofessional that is, especially when you compare it to the efforts of the other languages
Hiring British VAs and asking them to fake an American accent sounds like a common occurrence. Are they cheaper or something? It's such a waste given how distinct Welsh, Irish, Scottish and English sound.
@@RateUpRadio That's why I like the voice acting in Xenoblade 2 so much. Its plethora of accents is its biggest strength. Its even got a Welsh cat-girl in it lol
the closest one we get is arknight, there characters that have british cockney accent, even scottish accent, and theyre not ashamed to make the accent as thick as possible, its so good
it's why i appreciated Aether Gazer EN VA. i didn't play that long but having a mostly British cast and letting them talk in their accent without over the top, anime-ish, voice acting was a breath of fresh air. some of the VAs from AG are also in WW, but... yeah, here we are.
@@BBQsaucemixxc2 absolutely could have done without the southern American accents in the mix for some reason. Yeehaw it makes no gosh darn sense that there's a stacked ice lady who sounds like she's best off coolin off some mint julep for ya. But yeah, love the Xenoblade Brits
I actually really like Chixia's delivery. Some people say that she doesn't sound energetic enough, but I think they've been exposed to too many hyperactive over the top characters. Chixia sounds spunky without sounding like she's, how do I put this delicately, trying to be a spunky anime girl. She sounds like a bro, I really dig it. I also actually like Taoqi's accent slipping through once in a while. It sort of adds an exotic flair to her character. I think overall she did a good job. I do agree Fem Rover and Yangyang got screwed hard on the voice direction. In a lot of the scenes where Fem Rover is monologing she sounds confused by her own delivery. She SOUNDS like she's reading from a script.
Honestly, I don’t have any problems with Chixia’s voice at all. Playfulness suits her, phrases in battle are very much to my liking. But the prologue and following chapters completely killed the impression of her. I can’t get rid of the feeling that this is a farce to be "likable" for selfish purposes of someone (Magistrate)... But yeah, from the residents’ side we learn that she really has such energetic vibes. But at the beginning of the story it looked so unnatural and out of place... Those first sensations are simply imprinted in my head, thanks to the “work” of the screenwriters.
3:08 YES, and it's not just the audio, it's the actual voicelines, which just further proves it's the writers who were absolutely shitty at it. The whole entire time it is as if she is talking to us like a TODDLER. And not only that, during cut scenes her voice lines are SO INCREDIBLY WEAK AND FRAGILE. It's so dumb, the people get paid to do write these stories and their voice lines and they're horrible at it, it takes away of the immersion in the story(and it's the main plot as well). The voice lines and character story written for Jiyan were so much better(including the direction for the voice line recording), you could really see amd understand the complexity in his character, the softness, the pain, but also the strength when fighting, multi layered, meanwhile Yangyang: rover....🥹, are you okay🥹🥰. It's okay I'll stay behind and fight these monsters🥺you two go ahead😇, i am strong enough to handle this🥹 trust my power☺️🥹
This video was very well said!! Sometimes it’s not the English VAs fault, it could be the voice directing, yet players are always quick to hate on the Eng Dub 😞
Just admit it, English dubs are bad. Plain and simple. Also, studios sometimes force bad performances for some dubs so that people switch over and eventually the studio then can phase out that dub from the game in excuse that the dub is not getting preferred.
YangYang saying HuongLoong FOR 120 TIMES IN A ROW for the first while ... I almost died 😭 But Scar ... OMG That guy's VA overall omg omg gorgeous, I loved it so much
@@hikarii53 it's seriously something, It feels like she's half asleep XD , but I Love her character (she cute , she protec + her I enjoy her gameplay) and that's what makes me more sad bout this whole stix a lil more
@@Igriswuwa yep, I love her trope. I always love genuinely kind and caring characters (I love you Liv from PGR), and her voice actor is just the perfect one. Unfortunately the voice directing was bad. 😔
Scar's VA is amazing but he's held back by the cliche writhing sometimes. compared with the others, it's obvious he had much more freedom delivering said lines, you can feel the passion in every word. I just wish that sleepy Yangyang was the same considering she's the one talking the most.
@@Igriswuwa not trying to bash you, but genuinely how? Like, all she does is dump exposition and repeat what other people say. Hell, she even repeats stuff that she says. And her personality is an utter void. It’s funny because I really like Liv, so I’m wondering what went wrong here.
There is one single line from the male MC I think from the main story that sounded like he was recording with his phone in his bedroom. And it's deeply funny to me. Love the game so far !
I had a good chuckle when you suddenly said this is sponsored by Reverse 1999, now that's one way to give a good example of great EN Voice Acting and Direction.
one thing that bother me the most is how quiet english dub is. My friend tell me to increase the dialogue volume and decrease the music volume, but I think it miss the point of audio mixing in a game design
This definitely has felt like a direction problem! That's what I have been saying. I don't have any issues with the actors/actresses, because I feel like the company didn't request any re-takes or give any context for lines - I get that there was a time crunch, but still. The female rover that I play as sometimes just falls very flat, like the actress wasn't told what is happening during the lines. Also, during quests where she's 'thinking' about what she's doing (in the library as an example), it feels like she's talking to someone else, narrating what's happening, not thinking to herself. That was also a writing issue, too. :( I swapped to the JP dub. I swap back to the english here and there though, because I do love some of the voices!
There is far more good than bad, as you say it’s the tone of some of the lines, and sound editing that are the problems. People trash English dubs regardless of how good or bad they actually are 🥱
Yes! As an amateur voice actress myself, I can say that direction is just as important as acting skill. How can an actor know how to read a line without context or directions?
Fun fact: R1999 Regulus’ voice actor is Carina Reeves, also the voice behind Encore. It’s sad cause regulus is one of my favourite characters and her Carina’s delivery in r1999 is amazing! To me, main reason is mostly because of they forced them for do a American accent… The only voices I really like are Scar and Camellya. They need to localise the dubs better for sure if Yangyang needs to yap this much… I’m doing CN dub right now but if the EN dub improves I’m definitely going back.
Its funny how you got a reverse 1999 sponsor for THIS video, considering I'm pretty sure their done by the same team as wuwa Encore's VA is the same as Regulus and the difference is night and day It sucks how the british team was forcing an american accent
@@cranburrey Yes it is. People tend to conflate the character with the performance. One is a matter of writing, the other a matter of acting. The VA can't not follow the character's speech patterns if that's how they're written. So the voice has nothing to do with the third person speech.
Crownless losing his iconic "Have you seen my crown?" from CBT1 was probably the most devastating hit that involved VAs, like, brother, he needs to speak, not mumble. He's trying to be edgy on release (and CBT2) and has nothing else to prove it. CBT1 gives him that edge that he lost in CBT2. Realistically I would've stuck to this guy without even considering the story or characters or other people like ⛈ hes just that goated. Potential Man #3.
I dont know about speaking part since they scrapped the lore with TD but agree about the line when he first appear, they could slip that in as a single voiceline of his like what they did with inferno rider's "rush 'til the end"
Because u are not supposed to know that about Tacet's ability to speak vocally and eventually learn as u explore the land and city. And with how the crownless woke up almost the same time u woke up as a amnesiac was prob more important down the lane rather than for *EARNING EDGY POINTS FROM WESTERNERS WHO PROB WOULDN'T APPRECIATE THE STORY IF IT ISNT EDGY* and props to CN crowd for actually complaining about it , and to kuro for going ahead with the change. And Tacet's speak only if they retain the memories of their recent host like seen in Village Tacet which could only say save me brother. So crownless speaking would have made less sense in that context since that TD was almost born out of the same time as you were found so there is a link between the crownless and the Rover which is prob gonna be important in later part of story. Be edgy if it serves a purpose else don't cause it's cringe especially when you are trying to tell a story.
@@HallowDev But if u notice there is a good amount of time passing between the initial cutscene & them finding you So in that context of where they took inspiration from mostly from Wuxia / cultivation kinda stories , u mostly have initial benefactor who is trusting or a guide through the world so again if energetic and "hero of justice" Chixia being distrustful wouldn't have sense when the war frontlines were being held by Jiyan and the city was safe so the Midnight rangers weren't deployed on Frontlines to become war hardened which could cause them to be distrustful of foreigners. She would be a bit naive yes but her lines and action do make sense since she was inspired by Xiaoling(prob got the name wrong MB😅) the fictional hero who the ppl tease her as. This hero prob saved everyone Jinzhou so was not a person who doubted everyone they saw but tried to help em.
One thing I notice is that with Rover. I don't know if it's for female rover. But with male rover his idle lines get cut off suddenly. Like when his idle animation ends so does the line before he can finish it.
I agree with everything you said but I think it's really funny to hear Rover have such a monotone voice like she's always stating a fact "You're not going anywhere." is refreshing compared to "YOU'RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE RAHHHH" I love that her voice sounds like she dgaf, she just arrived in this world with no memories, she doesn't care deeply about anything yet.
I can see where you're coming from, but considering the physical effort she puts in that jump and dive, there should have been SOME force in her voice, perhaps more commanding than yelling.
Yea Aalto and Encore VAs are pretty decent compared to others and they're honestly just fun characters to be around. they have good chemistry with each other and Rover and it was hard not to smile during the part of the story we spent with them. I kinda want to have them as permanent traveling companions rather than deal anymore with YangYang atrocious VA and meh personality.
@@rs4902I personally think the VAs directions were the issue, since not knowing the context of lines and not getting a lot of takes can really affect it. And I can’t really speak to YangYang’s personality bc we don’t see much of it but I kinda hope they do smth to make her more interesting. Like Chixia has this whole life and stuff and has priorities that aren’t just Rover. Baizhi and Mortefi are glad to help out but mainly unaffected, and so on with the rest of the cast. The problem with Yangyang is that they want to keep her with Rover, and have her go everywhere with us, making her lack of personal interests and backstory a lot more obvious. I’m not trying to be rude or go white-knighting defending the company. I think there’s a lot the devs should work to improve on and you made a lot of good points. I also think they should either stop forcing English VAs to speak w an American accent and just use whatever they have naturally, hire American VAs whenever they do want a character with an American accent, or get tons of different accents in the game, like Irish, Scottish, etc. Tbh the only thing I disagree with is calling YangYang’s VA “horrible” bc she is actually really talented imo and can do really amazing takes with great line delivery. However this is personal preference so if you don’t like her who am I to disagree lol Anyways, I hope you have an awesome day and good luck saving/pulling!
Yeah, I don't think the problem is with Yangyang's VA. Just try to talk as slowly as Yangyang does without it sounding even worse. Yangyang's VA did a good job of giving them what they asked her for. The problem is with what they asked her for, and that lies on the director. It's like early anime dubs, where they would have the English VAs try to do Japanese school girl voices and it just doesn't work, because nobody who speaks English talks like that, ever. Same issue here. Nobody talks like Yangyang does. And so it falls horribly, horribly flat.
@@Axterix13 Wow I didn’t even realize it but that is the problem, you’re right 100%! I’m gonna be so real there were a couple times during the quest that Yangyang would have like a three sentence paragraph to read all at once, and I would read it and then my eyes would glaze over as it took her like a minute and a half to say the lines ㅠㅠ. And the early days of dubbed anime… it’s giving me flashbacks lol Thank you so much for this bc I never would have realized that was the problem. I think it’s really common in EN dubs for most things, they phrase things like no native English speaker would, which isn’t a problem if that’s the intention (if they’re a young child or canonically bad at speaking/learning the language, etc.) so it comes off as odd or off-putting. Unless it’s a trait of the character, like that I get and I love bc it makes for some funny word or sentence shenanigans, when done right. Anyways thanks a million and have an amazing day!!
Hearing about the crunch and last minute story change makes a lot of sense. I didn't know about the stuff in the closed beta so i didn't know there were changes. I did feel that some cutscenes felt rushed and the sound wasn't good in some parts but it makes sense why it ended up that way. I do love the game tho so hopefully they will update those parts in the future
in the story it felt like her lines were just being slowed by 50% of what it should be.. gave me the vibe of one of those teachers that speaks so slow it turns u off the class entirely
Same thought! It felt so unnatural. Especially when I hear Mortefi then it switches to Yangyang. Mortefi's VA did a great job, he speaks clear, concise , and neither too fast nor too slow.
Another problem I had was some voice lines in the story were cut short because the scene didn't give it enough time to happen. To make matters worse, I couldn't even scroll down in the text because it was too long. Bu, Scar's voice acting was absolute Gold⭐
-Thank you for this video you said almost everything i wanted to say. -Yangyang seems to be sleepy all the time. The end of some word stand out too much, like she's reading instead of actually being a person in the game. -Chixia at the very beggining seems to be reading too but they told her "read enthusiastically". Sometimes i felt she wasn't even in the scene, but still saying things. -Yangyang dub is insuferable. I changed to japanese cus i couldt take it. I liked her battle lines, favorite is "shape the shapeless". But her lines still sound like she's asleep, even while fighting. Her japanese deliver sounds much more like a battle and she's more natural. -Mortefi is good, but he always lowers his tone while getting to the end of the sentence so it started to bother me. - in the beggining there's a quest with Jianxin and we confront some exiles and the girl dubbing the female exile is just... jesus christ. The audio quality is terrible i thought she recorded it inher own pc or smething like that. And she gasp SO MUCH! every end of sentence she gasps intensely its not natural, and even irritating. - The pronunciation of "Huanlong" seems SO OFF. Expecially when said by Yangyang. she says like "bla bla bla normal sentence HU AN LON G bla bla bla". Again, like she's reading and every time this word appears she's like "oh i gotta prepare myself to say this word correctly or else ill blew it". Long story short, there's a lot of things that i didnt like about the english dub. But Yangyang is just unplayable. I had to change to japanese. But the english dub is good overall, most characters are fine. For example, i prefer Encore english voice better than japanese.

Same as me, I'm a loyal en dub user while playing hoyoverse games. I actually prefer it mostly because I like being able to understand what the characters say and identify what is the delivery emphasizing. But in this game, I just couldn't stand Yangyang's voice... I might switch to EN now that I've finished the story tho.
it boggles my mind how people on twitter were blaming hoyoverse for this. Saying hoyo took all the good VA's Like are these ppl real???? There are thousands of voice actors. what an insult to the wuwa va's i thought it was a direction problem or some re-recordings
Nope, Hoyoverse used a California Dubbing studio (Bang! Zoom! maybe) That's why you have mostly California based Voice talent in it. (IMO the outstanding dub in Genshin Impact is Allegra Clark as Beidou, when I played she was always in my party)
@@rangergooseman BRO look up Star Rail's Acheron cutscenes. Allegra didn't just kill it, she slew and gutted those lines for all the joy, tragedy, and drama they were worth. She is despicably talented with all that work she puts in.
I sticked with the english dub because there are certain parts in the main quest where they have a lot of text, and they say it in the voice over, but it's not present in the on screen text. It just cuts off randomly some times and I have to guess the word. This happens sometimes in the side quests too.
The way they make Carina Reeves sound for Encore hurt me - she's one of my favourite VA , she's Tataru from FF14, Fiora from Xenoblade and Regulus from Reverse 1999 to name a few .
2:26 Omg good thing u brought it up. The volume mixer in this game is like the title. Waves. I always end up changing the voice everytime I play trying to balance out having this is priority sfx > music > voice > ambience , but the voice just goes wherever it wants. i keep going to the settings bcuz of it
This really resonated with me (no pun intended). I play with the English dub, and I noticed every single one of these issues. I'm so glad someone else pointed out the British accent slipping here and there. That being said, I will continue with the English dub, despite these issues. I was actually quite moved by the conversation between Rover and Jinhsi under the moonlit night. The music and cinematography were lovely and really elevated the voice actor's performance. As for whether or not this will be addressed: I would love to get a fresh dub someday, but I think it's more likely they will do their best to improve new voice lines going forward.
Who ever oversees the vocal direction for the global version of the game needs to have everyone re-record lines or something cuz the English dub can definitely do better
@@Devilyami22they used the same VA studio as FFXVI and FFXIV's voice cast. So the issue definitely isn't talent. Despite its flaws, many consider FFXVI's casting as phenomenal especially the main character and characters like Cid.
@@coolyeh1017 Wish they would embrace the britishness, instead of trying to hide it. I don't know if this was the reason, but I had the impression some of the actors where more worried about pronouncing every word clearly than, you know, acting. Plus, characters with british accent sound so charming! Perhaps they though an american accent would be more neutral, but they might have shot themselves in the foot with this one.
Something I also noticed with yangyang is that whenever she says huanglong, it sounds like ai, it’s like the word huanglong is prerecorded and just reused in a bunch of her of her dialogue, it doesn’t match the tone of any of her other words in the sentence, it just sounds really weird.
As someone that decided to stick with the English dub (tho there were moments I almost swapped-), I really do hope that the dub from now on will only improve in quality AND ESPECIALLY DROP THE FAKE ACCENTS, POOR CHIXIA’S VA IS FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE
I would've love it if they went all in with their British accents,it would've been an interesting change of pace hearing about Chinese based lore with a British cast, would separate it from the xianzhou loufu from hsr

Exploring all the aspects of wuwa is so cool, don’t even care about the typo’s or mistakes it’s just funny lmao Watching your videos is making me realise just how much there is I didn’t even take notice to such common things in games I really like people who appreciate art for all it is and you took it to the next level So I’m subcrib
It really is a shame. The VAs can do so much better given the right direction, but it was clear the direction wasn't the best this time around. I hope they manage to rerecord most of the lines before they get too much on their hands so they can continue with that better quality going forward.
A common thing for these types of games is that due to leaks most EN VA's aren't given much context to what's going on especially for plot relevant characters. Voice directors then become even more important to ensure that things don't sound so weird. They as you said where very likely in a hurry to record all the lines and didn't have a solid voice direction leading to this mess. With NPC's maybe due to the limited lines and later recording it was easier for VA's to get into their roles. I hope they manage to address this cause Yangyang and the Female Rover where the biggest culprits of having bad voicelines.
I'm kinda glad that a lot has the same opinion which is that the voice direction of the dub is the real problem and not exactly the VAs themselves. Looking back at the short demo reels, I really liked their voices (worst I can say is that some feel a little on the mediocre side but still good nonetheless) but execution's inconsistent once they speak ingame.
Some of the VAs also voiced in Reverse 1999 and the eng dub of the characters are well liked by fans(such as Regulus). I feel bad that these UK VAs were told to do voices in an American accent, which they are unfamiliar with
FemRover is literally a "Dead fish in bed" of voice actors also the one who made the obvious explaining of what to do like we are a 3yo playing with cubes that have letters on them felt down right humiliating
as someone with auditory processing issues, the plosives from the two characters you first meet + the bad acting make my head wanna ex-plosive. it is so bad
6:50 yes, they rewrote the story and now I feel wierd whenever any character glorifies my existence without even doubting me whether I'm a friend or a foe.
The worse part that you being force to play English dub at the start where you cannot change different language dub at login menu the same thing happened to Genshin first launch
Can you please do a segment on the designs (partly how the female designs are struggling to have the same personality like PGR outside of Yinglin and Camalia excluding female Rover) and the current censorship WuWa is facing from changing Scar’s design and removing Sanhua’s tattoo? I would like to know how you feel about the current design direction for characters especially now that we are expected to see some new characters here soon.
Yeah, I don't really get why they don't do the PGR thing and just censor those for China while global has it normal. They did it with Ayla, so why not Scar or Sanhua?
Short answer: the studios are in London and a lot of newer/ less “prolific” talents are getting their first roles in a game as big as wuwa and they gotta sound murcian. Long and definetly worthwile answer: this video
I still don't get it...they probably have the money to go the US and hire actual Americans, forcing an accent NEVER goes well. and even then, why force an accent at all? I personally could care less about a person's accent, as long as I can understand what they're saying really.
Omg same, as someone who does chose EN dub, wuwa’s is so hard to listen to.. I can’t even use CN cause some EN subs are cut off. I’m still sticking to EN but I’m PRAYING they get it fixed, or at least it’s improved in future dubs 😭😭
feels like a whole lot of poor management in just all parts of the game, knowing kuro I ofc expected jank and scuffed things but there are some ridiculous issues here it almost feels like they lost their focus after they changed a lot about the game considering how huge of an investment the game must've been they should not have released it in this state they really needed to make full use of the months they had left before the license deadline was hope they stay strong and improve the game
i felt bad for wanting Yangyang to stop yapping but I'm so glad to see others also feel like her voice is not it right now. Also even with the character introduction videos on the channel, the grammar is off in places. I've heard lines in game where the voice actors correct the mistake in their take, or dialogue responses that sound like the previous line must have changed in phrasing since it was recorded, esp with Chixia and Rover at the beginning of the game. Also a lot of system messages feel like they were google translated, like 'Object was pull back to where it started' or something like that I can't remember the exact words.
Hopefully they actually fix the english dub, I always pick dub in all games I play and as of right now, Kuro Games is actively listening to the Wuthering Waves community, including both positive and negative feedbacks to improve the ingame experience for everyone, and hopefully they'll also hear us on this topic and improve the english dub for wuthering waves
Considering how there aren't many popular voice actors in the game, I kind of expected it. I mean, the cast doesn't even have voice actors like Caleb Yen or Lizzie Freeman. (The list goes on) I'm pretty sure there are some first-time voice actors among the cast too. I feel there might have been some miscommunications along the way too. I'm sure they will fix this.
Given everything I've seen about this, it's rather that they don't have many popular *american* voice actors. Some of them may not be as established, but it legitimately isn't the voice actors fault. I mean, come on, even an amateur could do better with some of the scenes if they were given proper directing.
I'm pretty sure I (did theater one [1] time) would be able to have a more compelling voice for Yangyang than what we actually got. First-time VAs probably wouldn't deliver *great* performances across the board, but if that were the issue, it would still be much more tolerable. Also, some of the VAs do have big previous roles. They're just not American
Well, I have alot to say on this topic, but the tldr is you hit the nail on the head. 7:35 I loved the fact that some had characters had accents (dude in particular remind me of Shulk from Xenoblade), it added more uniqueness to the world imo. I had no idea how many Voice actors were hiding their accents, I would have loved a British Chixia and Encore :( I thought Yangyang was secretly a android which would turn into a plot point, but eventually knew it was bad voice direction as she sounded completely different in battle. The sharp "S" sounds is also an issue in Genshin, slowly getting worse with every new event for certain characters like Ayaka. Male Rover's liberation lines are night and day, Spectro is very deep and mature while Fusion has him sounding 10 years younger and "edgy", the deeper voice would have perfectly got the point across. Overall we can tell what was rushed. They need to hookup their VA's with better equipment if they need it, get better voice directors/direction and let them do their natural accents. All of which can be fixed in a future update :)
I was so surprised when i heard encore the first time too. I was like she does a British accent on her sprint start and some of her voices and an American accent on others. I thought woolies made her change her accent lmaoo
You know what, maybe letting the girls's VA to speak in their normal accents would make the characters more charming and natural than forcing them to sound more American!
As a French I had French texts, this is the worse French translation from a big game I've ever seen! And having English voice + French text at the same time make the game almost not playable. So now I'm playing with English texts and Japanese voices XD
Some of the characters like Scar, Mortefi, Jiyan, etc are good but the most vocal ones; like Yangyang and Female Rover, are having problems so it brings the whole game down. Hopefully they'll be able to fix it/give the struggling VAs new direction to help this issue.
One thing I've noticed is it seems like there are sound issues all throughout the game moments where the music should be in the Forefront and strong like the full moon scene is instead muted as it low volume output and then there are things like the scar boss fight where if he hits you with his juggle slice there's basically no sound effects
With Kuro's history of actually listening to player feedback, I'm sure the voice actors will do their best to give us better performances. I just hope people won't be too harsh on the voice actors though.
I 100% agree with most of the VA's having no direction or context for a lot of their character's lines. I'm hoping that now that the game is out and they can focus on the story on a patch ny patch basis, they'll do a better job with quality control.
When I started this game I cried laughing because either Yangyang or Chixia said resonater with a sort've southern accent so it came out as "resernater" very early in the game. I fully lost it.
i cant remember exactly where but i remember coming across a voice line form an npc audio recording that straight up had the va redoing the line during the take like they did one take and they didnt bother to edit out that beginning mess up
im pretty sure the nameless male researcher hologram in encore and aalto's side quest was harry mcentire, the voice of xc3's noah. these random npcs have such good delivery in en

Reverse 1999 is so underrated!
I also just realized that might be true...when the characters get cut-offed when they talk in EN is because they use the same lip sync for CN. So the length of sentences differ. So if the CN talking is shorter than the EN version, the EN version will get cut-offed. So i think kuro just used the same CN lip sync for all languages
it’s my fav game tbh
Y2K went totally crazy in Reverse: 1999.
Congrats for the R99 sponsor, it’s such an awesome and underrated game! 🥳
Scar was hard carrying the EN voice acting imo. His VA really killed it
I am interested to see how things will change when they are not enforcing accent changes. Especially since Scar's VA has not accent change and it is very clear when comparing him to others along with the fact that he did a good job from an acting perspective.

@@aarongallardo3684 So True, The moment I got to that part with that puzzle where Female Rover narrated all the stuff you had to do, I cringed so hard that I immediately switched to CN dub cus I can still kinda understand what they are saying ;-;
Im actually glad that i heard both VAs before the launch and chose male rover. Even though i like female rover’s design better, i still prioritized their voice and voicelines
Things that would probably make Yangyang acceptable.
-pull back on the airy/whispy effect 50-75%
-speed up delivery about 30%
-stop using Rover unnecessarily

Yangyang's voice's giving me headache. I dunno why :|

Literally when I heard it I thought most of the voices were AI because of how wrong it sounded.
I thought this also and actually looked up the voice actor to verify lol
Same it just lacked too much emotion 😭
I’m like 90% sure they copy and pasted that 1 take where the VA said “Huanglong” right everywhere, because the intonation is really weird every time she says it.

SO TRUE 🙏
Jiyan and Scar carrying all the English dub by being the best male voices 🗣️🔥🔥
I also love Calcharo's va imo
Looking forward for Geshulin's voice as well! We just have a distorted version in the game, but in Jiyan's showcase, the execution was really good!
Those two are absolute chads. These MEN are carrying the game. 🗿
Aalto too
I noticed this immediately.
Exactly wt i noticed when i first heard suanni boi
Why is the Japanese dub so bad in everything? Do you guys really like listening to dogwater garbage? Get you're ears checked you weaboos!

6:05 "yes girl give us nothing!" I CRIED

What stood out to me was how many characters overly enunciate their words. Every single syllable is completely enunciated in a way of speaking that I believe is called hard attack. It doesn't sound very conversational and instead comes off as professional even clinical. Similar to how a national news anchor would talk. Knowing that it was an English cast trying to mask their accents really makes me feel bad for their situation.
maybe to cater to most of the ESL? but i suspect that over-enunciating words is a way to reduce, if not "remove" their accent. I've watched at least a couple of vtubers explain it this way.
Thatsbjust dumb then because personally I like hearing accents because it makes the characters sound more unique.
Kuro said they were going to just start letting them use their own accents. So maybe the accents are what will fix the eng dub?
They gotta have an American accent.” Or something similar to that needs to be slapped in the face with a tuna.
i think chixia’s accent peaking through is really charming despite it all

I was actually so shocked when I heard it. I thought, there is no way they kept this in.
You’re not going anywhere🫥
@@SageRuffinboth scripting and the VA director's fault
This!! So many of the lines sounded like a first or second take at best, like the actors were still figuring out what voice they want to use.

Hiring British VAs and asking them to fake an American accent sounds like a common occurrence. Are they cheaper or something?

Male rover isn’t much better either, sadly. Always sounds super monotone and when he speaks. Here’s hoping to some improvement down the line
Those first sensations are simply imprinted in my head, thanks to the “work” of the screenwriters.
yeah, from the start she was alr a favourite of mine lol
I LOVED HER VOICE ACTUALLY. she sounds so? normal? casual? im in love(as a girl). she's such a sweetheart and i like how raspy her voice can be.
Agreed, And I'm really glad I chose the male Rover! 😅

The characters can be really hit or miss like the English rover has a few good lines but most of them are kinda…soulless?
FemRover sounds very robotic. I understand that her general demneour is meant to be serious, but that doesn't mean she has to be "*emotionless*".
I'm pretty sure they sound soulless because of the VAs being British and was told to do an American accent for their roles

one thing that bother me the most is how quiet english dub is.

The voice acting during the story is also a lower volume than the voice lines during combat. It's definitely a problem.
Yeah let's hope they adjust it in the next patch
This definitely has felt like a direction problem! That's what I have been saying. I don't have any issues with the actors/actresses, because I feel like the company didn't request any re-takes or give any context for lines - I get that there was a time crunch, but still. The female rover that I play as sometimes just falls very flat, like the actress wasn't told what is happening during the lines. Also, during quests where she's 'thinking' about what she's doing (in the library as an example), it feels like she's talking to someone else, narrating what's happening, not thinking to herself. That was also a writing issue, too. :(
I swapped to the JP dub.
I think this video is the perfect example of why voice direction is needed for things like this
I mean "you are not going anywhere" line. Do you really need a voice direction for that?😅
It sounds weak even for inner monologue
@@ProkerKusaka you can make the line work if the voice actress was directed to put any actual emotion and effort into the line
Fun fact: R1999 Regulus’ voice actor is Carina Reeves, also the voice behind Encore. It’s sad cause regulus is one of my favourite characters and her Carina’s delivery in r1999 is amazing! To me, main reason is mostly because of they forced them for do a American accent…
The only voices I really like are Scar and Camellya. They need to localise the dubs better for sure if Yangyang needs to yap this much… I’m doing CN dub right now but if the EN dub improves I’m definitely going back.
Its funny how you got a reverse 1999 sponsor for THIS video, considering I'm pretty sure their done by the same team as wuwa
Encore's VA is the same as Regulus and the difference is night and day
It sucks how the british team was forcing an american accent
encore's voice is good tho...
@@wholethedogsout880Carina Reeves is very talented! (Encore's VA)
@wholethedogsout880 her voice is annoying imo especially with the third person speech
@@mybeaniebooz9601 Is the third person speech not part of her character?
Potential Man #3.
the CN players went full soyjak with cbt1 thats why they changed it
I dont know about speaking part since they scrapped the lore with TD but agree about the line when he first appear, they could slip that in as a single voiceline of his like what they did with inferno rider's "rush 'til the end"
@@ak-ub1ym Well i guess that makes sense, but CN didnt actually complain about Crownless, it was about chixia not being trusting lmao
@@HallowDev But if u notice there is a good amount of time passing between the initial cutscene & them finding you
So in that context of where they took inspiration from mostly from Wuxia / cultivation kinda stories , u mostly have initial benefactor who is trusting or a guide through the world so again if energetic and "hero of justice" Chixia being distrustful wouldn't have sense when the war frontlines were being held by Jiyan and the city was safe so the Midnight rangers weren't deployed on Frontlines to become war hardened which could cause them to be distrustful of foreigners.
Yeah the NPC voice acting was great. I sat and listened all his acting which was something I didn’t do for most resonators
"Whoa whatchu doin' !?......Oh it's a mangostine i thought it was grenade."
Feels like the NPCs were given a script and were told to just go crazy. Sometimes, no voice direction is the right voice direction.
Eh, it doesn`t even sound cold to me. It`s closer to... thoughtful? There`s nowhere near enough force.
sure its refreshing, but the scene literally doesn't fit her tone and its garbage

I love Aalto and Encore, yet Yangyang and Rover makes me run into a wall. I can still hear her intense breath behind my neck.
However this is personal preference so if you don’t like her who am I to disagree lol
Anyways, I hope you have an awesome day and good luck saving/pulling!
And the early days of dubbed anime… it’s giving me flashbacks lol
Thank you so much for this bc I never would have realized that was the problem.
Anyways thanks a million and have an amazing day!!
i love aalto for his name, because his name literally means "wave" in finnish
I knew i wasn't the only one who thought that npc voices were more immersive than the main characters
Crazy that I got a Wuthering waves ad during your video as if they were trying to distract me from the poor dubbing 😂😂😂
in the story it felt like her lines were just being slowed by 50% of what it should be..
gave me the vibe of one of those teachers that speaks so slow it turns u off the class entirely
Same thought! It felt so unnatural. Especially when I hear Mortefi then it switches to Yangyang. Mortefi's VA did a great job, he speaks clear, concise , and neither too fast nor too slow.
And with some scenes automatically autoplaying, her lines get cut off from the scripted angle changes 😭
Yeah I think that's most likely a problem with the writing and lines given, it's all written like a google translated instruction manual.
Something else i noticed was cut lines. The character would just stop talking mid sentence. It really breaks the immersion
Another problem I had was some voice lines in the story were cut short because the scene didn't give it enough time to happen. To make matters worse, I couldn't even scroll down in the text because it was too long. Bu, Scar's voice acting was absolute Gold⭐
“You’re not going anywhere.” 😐
I got so used to playing anime-style games in english dub because of hoyoverse, and I love both hoyoverse & kurogames but WuWa english dub got me switching to JP so fassstttt 😭
Yea I switched to JP as well. Made for a much better story experience. When new story content drops I'll give the english dub another go.
@@justinmartin6976 i havent startedyet but for the JP dub do you think the male or female VA is better for rover? i prefer deep voiced males and not squeky or childish woman voices
@@SombreroGato male rover surprisingly has a good-deep (not overly deep) voice. I really like it. Deep enough for his looks, but not deep enough to make him sounds like an old man, if you know what I mean XD
I like hearing Yangyang in English when in battle but in normal conversation it's dead
Rover sounds like all her lines were AI created. she sounds so bored and unaware of anything thats happening.
it boggles my mind how people on twitter were blaming hoyoverse for this.
No offense, but twitter got nothing to do with these. idk why people keeping brining it twitter drama to yutube.
But it is a related topic, @@titandarknight2698
@@rangergooseman BRO look up Star Rail's Acheron cutscenes. Allegra didn't just kill it, she slew and gutted those lines for all the joy, tragedy, and drama they were worth. She is despicably talented with all that work she puts in.
Which is hilarious since Genshin, Star Rail, and WuWa share a lot of the same CN and JP voice actors.
Waves.
I always end up changing the voice everytime I play trying to balance out having this is priority sfx > music > voice > ambience
, but the voice just goes wherever it wants. i keep going to the settings bcuz of it
This really resonated with me (no pun intended).
Most likely they were on a massive time crunch and trying to get it done as fast as they could, but yeah... The results are not great.
well they used uk actors instead of well known en voice actors
not EVERYONE but some of the characters mentioned in the video for sure
6:14 oh my god is that real? lmao, you can’t chalk that up as no direction anymore, that’s just straight up a robot
Also they would be very much standing out by being unique as you said by being a Chinese game with a British EN Voice Cast
It's not like people mind a british cast, look at Xenoblade 2!
And they also have several British NPCs (although like 1/3 of them are voiced by the same VA), so I was surprised that they didn’t have a playable British character
My icks: Fem rover, yangyang, random NPC's (only some)
The GOATED VA's: Scar, Camellya, Jiyan, Jinhsi, Lingyang(honestly mid-great), Mortefi, Random NPCs(only some)

I feel bad that these UK VAs were told to do voices in an American accent, which they are unfamiliar with
tbh I just could not get over how some of the characters would just talk like they're preschool teachers trying to explain big concepts to toddlers
They really do need to rerecord at least some of the early game lines, especially with fem Rover in the grand library.
Encore slipping into her British Accent be like
"Encore wants some Wa`a Bruve damm TD`s some big ol`Wanakas innit"
It sounds like the Main Quest voicelines were practice and the Character Menu voicelines was when Ms. Rebecca got a hang of the character.
Yeah agreed, a lot of the story lines really felt like first reads rather than actual takes.
FemRover is literally a "Dead fish in bed" of voice actors
also the one who made the obvious explaining of what to do like we are a 3yo playing with cubes that have letters on them felt down right humiliating

They did it with Ayla, so why not Scar or Sanhua?
they removed scar's bojanya 😔
4:01 i LOVE the delivery of her attack lines, but especially "Shape the Shapeless!", she sounds nothing like this in actual chat dialogues
Same T^T the texts are so scuffed.
feels like a whole lot of poor management in just all parts of the game, knowing kuro I ofc expected jank and scuffed things but there are some ridiculous issues here it almost feels like they lost their focus after they changed a lot about the game
considering how huge of an investment the game must've been they should not have released it in this state
they really needed to make full use of the months they had left before the license deadline was
hope they stay strong and improve the game
i felt bad for wanting Yangyang to stop yapping but I'm so glad to see others also feel like her voice is not it right now. Also a lot of system messages feel like they were google translated, like 'Object was pull back to where it started' or something like that I can't remember the exact words.
i find Encore's slipping accent very endearing actually. It sounds cute, her echo summoning voiceline along with some story parts stood out to me most
Hopefully they actually fix the english dub, I always pick dub in all games I play and as of right now, Kuro Games is actively listening to the Wuthering Waves community, including both positive and negative feedbacks to improve the ingame experience for everyone, and hopefully they'll also hear us on this topic and improve the english dub for wuthering waves
@@nemasisdemarini8339 I agree, it's such a wasted potential
I'm pretty sure I (did theater one [1] time) would be able to have a more compelling voice for Yangyang than what we actually got. First-time VAs probably wouldn't deliver *great* performances across the board, but if that were the issue, it would still be much more tolerable.
Also, some of the VAs do have big previous roles. They're just not American
Yang Yang's mic is peaking everytime lol
Well, I have alot to say on this topic, but the tldr is you hit the nail on the head.
7:35 I loved the fact that some had characters had accents (dude in particular remind me of Shulk from Xenoblade), it added more uniqueness to the world imo. I had no idea how many Voice actors were hiding their accents, I would have loved a British Chixia and Encore :(
I thought Yangyang was secretly a android which would turn into a plot point, but eventually knew it was bad voice direction as she sounded completely different in battle.
All of which can be fixed in a future update :)
okay this is KINDA off topic but REVERSE 1999 MENTION ??? YAYAYAYAYYAY
I was so surprised when i heard encore the first time too. I was like she does a British accent on her sprint start and some of her voices and an American accent on others. I thought woolies made her change her accent lmaoo
omg 😂
I’m just glad I wasn’t the only one who thought some of the acting was weird, I was too scared to say it bc of the hype on WuWa
I want them to improve! 😮 The dub is good but it can be so much better
doesn't seem like a problem with the actors but instead the writers and directors
VA isn't the problem, they've already proven themselves.. Kuro just needs to hire a studio that has vast experience in dubbing
I 100% agree with most of the VA's having no direction or context for a lot of their character's lines. I'm hoping that now that the game is out and they can focus on the story on a patch ny patch basis, they'll do a better job with quality control.
I watched the Lingyang ad and:
*Hi, I’m Lingyang.* 🤖🤖🤖
I don’t blame his VA but holy shit he has such an annoying voice, I avoided pulling him for that reason.
