If replaced with an inox you have go fit a sacrifical anode in The heat Exchanger. If not the whole exhaust manifold/Exchanger Will act as anode and end up in a expensive replace need in a few years.
Can you be more specific? I have just changed the elbow on my engine (MD2040)and it was as blocked as this one, with an inox one. Where do I put the sacrifical anode in The heat Exchanger???
Rust never sleeps. Those exhaust elbows have a typical lifespan of about 8 to 10 years. The carbon buildup inside of that elbow is because you’re trying to baby a diesel engine that is designed to run an RPM to build heat to expel all of that carbon.
Hi, I have a volvo D1-13 and it looks like I have the same problem with blocked exhaust elbow - small pipe on top probed with screwdriver and will not go down - so will take up to inspect. Can they be cleaned and how? I want to avoid more expense:)
Hi David, you could try cleaning them but probably the best bet is just to replace them. I think the elbows were around $A450 each for the D1-30s on the cat. Total job including diagnosis, fitting up new ones came to $1400 ex GST. The work was done in PIttwater, Sydney so I am sure it would be cheaper elsewhere and even cheaper if you fit up the parts yourself
carbon can be cleaned out with oven cleaner ( caustic or chemically basic) calcium in the water tract can be attacked with bilge buster.. which I think is just muriatic acid.. mixed with water 4 parts water, 1 part acid. the curved tract of the water passage is a bitch.. and cannot be done when installed. I will try mine this week. watch Pacific Child Resurrection to see how I make out. New parts are great if you have the money.. but to resolve a clog.. hardly sensible to waste expensive part, if not otherwise compromised by damage.
Capt Larry - I have 2x of these motors and have replaced both Volvo crappy cast iron exhaust elbows with stainless steel ones . One of the original s actually split as there was so much rust trying to get out ! Junk them and get some s/s manifolds made , it cost me a LOT less than Volvo replacements and they are now 6/8 years old .
We ended up adding extra thru-hulls and by-passed the sail drive intakes. They just kept getting too much marine growth, especially in NZ

Every two years inspection
