Unfortunately, the perception of downtown Minneapolis being the happy home to violence, criminality & lawlessness -- spawned by the past foolish & ignorant actions of Mayor Frey & the Mpls City Council -- remains. The best thing that has happened recently are the RICO legal actions against Mpls gang members -- which Mayor Frey has amazingly (!!) embraced -- which may encourage local citizens to venture back into the downtown area.
I hope & trust that Mayor Frey will maintain his newly acquired set of opinions & sentiments against criminality & lawlessness in Mpls -- a position which will, I believe, reduce the level of law breaking, villainy & wrong doing in the city.

Did you witness, as I did, Jacob Frey on his knees at George Floyd's funeral, weeping (seemingly) uncontrollably with involuntary shoulder jerking and convulsing head movements, while reaching toward the casket??? This was not sorrow for a man he knew not. This was grief he felt for his political career that was no doubt, dead. Yet, three years later, Ukrainian suit and tie colors in tow, the re-elected, 'It's only brick and mortar', Mayor that not only watched but, some have said, encouraged violence, stands in front of cameras proclaiming decreasing crime numbers - citing statistics not from 2018 or 2019 - but compared to the last three years of never before seen senseless violence. Metro Transit ridership is down 70%+ from 2019 - even when he states it is "up from last year".
You cannot fix a problem that you cannot admit exists.
Mayors in Ukraine have started wearing Minneapolis colors in support. Stop ignoring the problems.

This was not sorrow for a man he knew not. This was grief he felt for his political career that was no doubt, dead."
I did not, Mr L. I don't know Mayor Frey personally, so he could be a Prince among Men, or he could be a lachrymose hypocrite whose cynicism is matched only by his fake sincerity. As far as I can determine he could be the embodiment of either of these persons -- or somewhere between.
"Yet, three years later, Ukrainian suit and tie colors in tow, the re-elected, 'It's only brick and mortar', Mayor that not only watched but, some have said, encouraged violence, stands in front of cameras proclaiming decreasing crime numbers - citing statistics not from 2018 or 2019 - but compared to the last three years of never before seen senseless violence."
We know that anyone who describes decreasing criminality in Minneapolis is a bald-faced liar -- as is indicated in this set of crime statistics ("Crime Dashboard for Minneapolis) from 2023 year-to-date...
      www.minneapolismn.gov/government/government-data/datasource/crime-dashboard/
Of these crime metrics are 7 UP, 3 are down, and 2 are even. It takes a lot of gall to suggest that this means a reduction in crime.
"Metro Transit ridership is down 70%+ from 2019 - even when he states it is "up from last year". You cannot fix a problem that you cannot admit exists. Mayors in Ukraine have started wearing Minneapolis colors in support. Stop ignoring the problems."
It's a commonplace observation about those drawn to politics that "...there are none so blind as those who choose NOT to see."
If you read my comment above & believed that I was a supporter of Mayor Frey, or was suggesting that I do NOT believe that Mpls continues to spiral downward into criminality, violence & lawlessness, then please read my comment again. The BEST that I can say about Mayor Frey is that some of the other mayoral alternatives could have been WORSE.

@@danlowe8684 The numbers I'm looking at (year-to-date), Mr L, indicate that these crime numbers have all increased: 1/ assault offenses; 2/ burglary/breaking&entering; 3/ destruction/vandalism; 4/ motor vehicle theft; 5/ sex offenses; 6/ stolen property offenses; & 7/ weapon law violoations
If you want to go back 3 years -- instead of just one year -- then it's 6 categories increased, 5 categories decreased, one the same. As far as I can determine crime in Mpls -- on the whole -- is still increasing. And, unless you have a different view on crime, an increase crime is generally bad, toxic, harmful & injurious for society.
Please note: I'm looking at the NIBRS crime metrics on that URL. As of January 1, 2021, the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) became the national standard for law enforcement crime data reporting in the United States.

With corporate downsizing..office space is in bad shape. Obviously restaurants and retail will suffer. I think downtown housing is maxxed at this time...it's not affordable for most... It's going to take events and restaurants to keep downtown rolling until corporations cycle back to office work. City leaders need to beef up safety and also heavily court out state companies to move here..downtown.
