Mrs. Collins , you had a heart of gold and understanding for learning. Cicely. Tyson was a wonderful actress in all the movies she has starred in.
She is really amazing. The best thing that I learned from her is that, as a teacher, do not give up on students whose attitudes may seem to be troublesome. And above all, teach with love, hard work and dedication. I salute her!
U can see how much faith she had in God all so trust by her trust in the Lord their would have never been a great husband. Thank the Lord for both of them and all the other family, friends who also support them. Each one of us has a great gift to use.if we trust JESUS.
Absolutely right, everyone needs support to go on their way and achieve their goals. But we should keep dreaming and striving for what we believe in even if we haven't found that supportive person. We should be strong enough and try our best!! ✨
I remember well when Marva Collins became a name. I remember the 60 Minutes program where she was interviewed and shown in action at her school. It was so great. But folks, her minority children who the EXPERTS said could not learn embarrassed the Public education system in that city. They came after her. I encourage everyone impressed with this wonderful lady to read the rest of the story.
Marva Collins came to speak in my town of Rochester NY many years ago. Most of the teacher's in the audience were intimidated by her. But Marva was a beautiful real human being.. I found it a pleasure to speak with her. After being abused in foster care (uncare) along with being mistreated by teachers, God I wish I had a teacher like her. Love raises people up, and that's just what Marva did.
@George the problem is still that the system ties the hands of good teachers and promotes simply teaching to the state standard test. This is not productive.
Back then there was discipline now the students are disrespecting and abusing the teachers! They can not teach anything because the students are running amok in the classroom!
nothing but tears. Why can't there be more teachers like this to show more interest in kids with learning disabilities. I believe that a child with disabilities just want to be given a chance and have someone to show that they care
It’s sad what’s going our school system these days they are more interested in a child’s gender than teaching them the skills to succeed in life and what Marvin Colin said in this movie think for yourself don’t let the masses do it for you.
I am here while reading Cicely Tyson's book. I have done so many TH-cam and Google searches to see faces of people of the names she mentions in her book or to search events she speaks of. I REMEMBER watching this when I was very young on television...I couldn't have been more than 4 at the time and yet it stuck with me and I remembered who Mrs. Marva Collins was. Now all these years later, I work at a museum and my partner teaches in high school. Mrs. Collins's story is still part of why I love educating and I hope that she knows what a difference she made.
As i prepare to go back to school on Monday i decided to watch a movie for inspiration and came across Marva Collins . Although i teach preschool it was just what l needed.
Wow! I am truly moved by this movie. Mrs. Collins marriage is one that all should strive for. The drive, passion, desire, and love help make her school a success. Very rare to find these days. Powerful movie!
such an amazing woman. I wish the system taught children the way she did. She didn't just teach them , she taught them they are worth it, they are loved and believed in, and that they matter. This is what children need to be taught, in order to be able to learn.
I wish I would have had a teacher like her. It's ridiculous where I live in California. Children at all grade levels are failing, can't read, write, or do math. These people aren't stupid, it's the bureaucrats, the regulations. Mrs. Collis was right, so why can't we incorporate what she has done into all public schools? Don't tell me they need more money, she taught these children on a shoe string, they learned, while increasing the kids confidence.
This was SO inspiring to me when I was growing up, because I saw the same things she was challenging, being a student in the NYC public school system myself. She was such a FORCE for change and Tyson was SO BRILLIANT in her portrayal.
This is one of the most inspiring movies. The most dedicated teacher with high hopes, patients, love and motivation. We find them very rare in the universe.
Can you help me if you know the name of the teacher who says "why do you bother Mrs. Collins? The kid`s nothing but trouble"? I mean what's his name in this movie?
@Michelle-pn9xt I assume they didn't have access to the Internet at the time. We only got Internet in 1996. Given this story is from the late 70's the OP could have been educated in the 80's,90's or early 00's and only thereafter could find out more information
What an amazing teacher. This reminds me of so many teachers today who have left the public school and started free or inexpensive homeschool coops, along with the parents who have also pulled their kids out of public schools to homeschool. So many of us thought we were supposed to bring public school home, but instead we learned to teach how our kids do their best learning, along with the teachers who left the school system, and we learned that we did not have to have a degree to teach children. We just had to love our children, teach them that anything is possible, and learn with them.
I was made aware of this film by "Ultimate Confidence", a book by Marisa Peer, who mentions it in the beginning. So glad I watched it. Very inspiring and uplifting.
What's rather sad is that (according to Wikipedia) "Collins and her daughter ran the school for more than 30 years until it closed in 2008 due to lack of sufficient enrollment and funding." I'd like to thank the owner of this TH-cam channel for uploading this movie thereby making it publicly accessible. I think I needed to hear the quote at 12:25 in the wee hours of the morning: “Quitting did not build the Sears tower. Nor did it write the Magna Carta.”
this is how I feel about my students. Now, my situation is different. I teach a Toddler classroom but, many of the parents don't care, let their children misbehave and do teach them to be a citizen of the world. I've had foster kids, kids that arnt bathed , who have diaper rashes so bad by sometimes bleed. I make it my porpoise to make sure that I love them, that I know they can learn and they are important. Maybe I will never be as great as Marva Collins but I do understand the love she had for her class. In my heart my kids are my babies and I love them and will guide them to know right from the start learning, self value and knowing they are supported will hopefully understand that even later in life to have a thirst for education and a teacher that loves them. A year in my room....forever in my heart
“Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.” ― Victor Hugo I love this movie it's truly emotional and teaches a lot of moral lessons.
If only all of our teachers could be like Marva! Teaching is one of the most important jobs that exists and yet teachers are unappreciated, underpaid and are rarely recognized for their work. I know for me I had a few who truly changed the path of my life for the better. I will always be thankful for them. Great movie!
I truly respect the love Mrs.Collins has for teaching and her students. Unlike my principal who says she is running a business and doesn’t show love to the children or patience. The schools are loosing good teachers because of politics. We love to teach and our children come first, just like Marva Collins. We leave because the system does not honor or support that love.
What a heartfelt movie to inspire teachers who desire to make a difference in childrens lives. If teachers desire to make a difference in the lives of children...the world would be a better place. This movie inspires me to want to make a difference. Thank you Mrs. Collins
Beautiful movie we have lost this in our communities yall this story means a lot Dont give up on our children Our Black children need Black teachers who care like this

I loved watching the transformation take place. We need more of these stories to be told. Thank you for sharing. It was a blessing 😊

She also taught the importance of self respect and the joy of achievement despite circumstances. Reminds me of Dr. Ben Carson. What a wonderful inspiration.
I love watching this. As a homeschool mom i am grateful for the inspiring life lessons this movie provides. Ms. Tyson was phenomenal in this movie (she always is in any movie). Can you help me if you know the name of the teacher who says "why do you bother Mrs. Collins? The kid`s nothing but trouble"?
I mean what's his name in this movie?
Wow! I was born and raised in this neighborhood and knew nothing about her. As a senior in college I am just now learning. What an inspiration.
Took me 23 years to look her up . My old elementary teacher use to quote her all the time!
Why would it takes 23 years to look up information? What do you mean by that?
My Teacher Miss Montgomery use to make us recite a poem by her everyday
There should be more teachers like MRS Collins Her students were blessed.
I was made aware of this film by "Ultimate Confidence", a book by Marisa Peer, who mentions it in the beginning. So glad I watched it. Very inspiring and uplifting.
She was beyond a great teacher! And her husband was beyond supportive! Beautiful movie!
I'm a mess 😢 what an excellent movie. May God bless these children wherever they are. The teacher was or is an amazing person. God bless her.
I was so taken back by this woman's determination and drive she had for all the children in her community.
Then it was probably a lot to rent or buy a building.
My grandparents were born then so this is probably something that may have been familiar to them.
The black community stopped wanting excellence for their young and succumbed to victimization and blame. That"s why enrollment dried up.
this is how I feel about my students.
Sure very happy to hear you your another Marva Collins God Bless You ❤️
what an amazing lady.. this movie needs to be shown in every school, all kids need to know just how beautiful they truly are.
reikibee every teacher should watch this
“Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.”
― Victor Hugo
I love this movie it's truly emotional and teaches a lot of moral lessons.
I got teary-eyed watching this part! Whew!
When Tina stood up at the end and gave her speech I cried hard 😘👍🏽😢😢😢😢
I can relate to her i deal with a learning disorder and I had no help.
I was moved in tears what a great teacher and educator, what an inspiration indeed......
In what ever happened she still smiles and hug and even kiss the students 😍
We teachers aren't allowed to hug and kiss pupils these days!
Praise the Lord for dedicated teachers like Marva Collins
If only all of our teachers could be like Marva! Teaching is one of the most important jobs that exists and yet teachers are unappreciated, underpaid and are rarely recognized for their work. I know for me I had a few who truly changed the path of my life for the better. I will always be thankful for them. Great movie!
I had to revisit this movie because of cicely tyson passing. What a inspiring film 🎥. May your spirit expand through the universe shining light on us.
we need teacher like this
eso es cierto asi cambiamos EL SISTEMA DE EDUCACION EN EL.MUNDO
I was deeply inspired by the movie. As an educator that's what I strive to be, like Marva Collins.
Marva Collins was an amazing teacher
I love how she inforced the education of children back in the day even when people put her down she still had a smile while teaching
💟💝💝💝🙏
I truly respect the love Mrs.Collins has for teaching and her students. Unlike my principal who says she is running a business and doesn’t show love to the children or patience. The schools are loosing good teachers because of politics. We love to teach and our children come first, just like Marva Collins. We leave because the system does not honor or support that love.
What a heartfelt movie to inspire teachers who desire to make a difference in childrens lives. If teachers desire to make a difference in the lives of children...the world would be a better place. This movie inspires me to want to make a difference. Thank you Mrs. Collins
NaTHaN. Unique. Love you. Hay. 🌼🌼🌼🌼🍒🍒😊🌹😊sxe

This movie made me so emotional. To have a teacher to care like that is a blessing. I only wish I had a teacher like her coming up.
I was so emotional watching the passion and love she had teaching her children . Best movie ever
OMG this made me crybecause I had teachers who believed in me, our children need teachers like this
Beautiful movie we have lost this in our communities yall this story means a lot Dont give up on our children Our Black children need Black teachers who care like this
God bless Marva Collins a strong black woman
Awesome movie! It was refreshing to see how one person believing in her studens; showing them 'unconditional love' could help them see (& reach) their God-given potential. I loved watching the transformation take place. We need more of these stories to be told. Thank you for sharing. It was a blessing 😊
Oh wow! I am so lost of words how to describe this movie. All I can say is I am glad I got the chance to watched it.
Why was it's not in theaters? One of the best movies I've ever seen in my life! So inspiring❤ May she RIP

A very inspiring movie.
Such an encouraging story. I feel anyone wanting to become a teacher, this movie should be part of the curriculum..
As a early childhood educator. This story just blessed my soul
She was so merciful when that window was broken. "Blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy" in Jesus name 🙌
We can all see the determination of these teachers but all their efforts are uplifted by their super supportive husbands.
She also taught the importance of self respect and the joy of achievement despite circumstances. Reminds me of Dr. Ben Carson. What a wonderful inspiration.
I have not heard of Mrs Marva Collins. I really enjoyed watching this movie it's very motivating movie. Need more teachers like this.
I love watching this. As a homeschool mom i am grateful for the inspiring life lessons this movie provides. Ms. Tyson was phenomenal in this movie (she always is in any movie). She captures the essence and grit of every character. Marva Collins is an exceptional human being as well. God bless these Queens, and may they RIP. Thank goodness for youtube! I have never learned of Marva Collins until i watched this a few months ago.

"if you're not willing to make mistakes, you won't make anything."
"If you don't give up, you gotta be ready to fight" - Maria Collins
Best movie ever! Tears of joy from my heart streaming down my face watching this movie of positivity.
I’ve never seen this movie till today, I wish it was shown in school. REst in peace to this beautiful strong educated woman! It start with the children, you was everything a child need in life At Least once. Thank you for your strong heart mind and soul👸🏾
This is a true definition of a teacher
Bold as a lion; vision and confidence of an eagle, meek as a lamb...excuse me but I saw the character of Jesus in this! We can’t change the world by standing still...powerful movie...
Powerful comment and analogy
Please put this movie in all the schools Please! We need to help our children.
