    This is the lady that embarrassed the city public school system. They did a lot to smear and hurt her. She was far too strong to ever let it ever break her. God bless all she did!!

      REALLY??? Troll...My parents were donors to her school when she began.
      The issue.isn't the school teachers...she required the parents to be involved and of they did not, they were kicked out of the school.
      Parents are very important! Unfortunately, parents in public schools can not require the same.

      @@divingchicago actually if public school teachers rose up as one and they would if they cared like Mrs. Collins did, things would change. She proved it IS very much the teachers and the teaching method. Of course, broken dysfunctional families are a factor and she had same kids, same neighborhood the failed public school had. Troll? The usual slur when one has no cogent response.

    I spoke with her over the phone. It was truly an honor. Didn't get to send my son to her. But he made it through, thank goodness. He always read well. My mother read Homer to him as a child. She did it for fun without realizing the impact reading has on a child. He still reads Homer on occasion and has worked for years as a graphic designer. That was actually MY dream!

      I feel you. But she said often that she was no miracle worker. She loved kids and consistently applied what the research describes as "best practice". Today we call it the Science of Reading. It's what Mrs Collins was doing. We, as Black folks, should be on the front lines shouting from the rooftops to have instruction rooted in the Science of Reading, not grasping at straws for whatever trendy or politically correct thing comes along.

    Thank God for teachers like this because when I was in elementary school, 2 of my teachers told me I couldn't learn. I felt horrible. Yrs later I met another teacher. He told me I could learn. I just needed someone to teach me how to learn !! He was right. He taught me how to learn by understanding definitions and thru reseach. Well, that teacher was the Lord. Praise his name I've been learning ever since... True story ❤

      She actually had to leave the school system to do her own thing and teach a classic education. There's a movie called the Marva Collins story. Worth the watch

    • @KhaoticKim
      @KhaoticKim ปีที่แล้ว +11

      She had to start her own private school to teach her method. The public school system does not support this style of teaching.

    • @kareemweaver7935
      @kareemweaver7935  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@KhaoticKim It wasn't the method of teaching that she objected to. The schools, at that time, had too much chaos. Once she began to work outside of the school, she gave seminars and training to educators in traditional school settings. Supporting their understanding of effective instructional methods.
      I taught in a public school system where we used a curriculum that mirrored her approach and, wouldn't you know it, reading went up 7 years in a row. It takes clarity, curriculum, and support. Actually, the clearest proponents for her teaching methods are traditional groups. If you look at the AFT website their "Elements of an Effective Reading Program" are nearly identical to what Marva Collins was doing. The question is... "Is anybody listenng?"
