Nice little modification to get heat into the cab. The only thing I'd have done differently, was put a diverter valve, to send more hot water through the heater core during the winter and less or none during the summer. Then you'll get a lot more heat
I just used a cheap heater core and some strong pc fans. All in it cost me 15 bucks, some scrap wood and an old hose I had on hand. My tractor has been toasty ever since in the winter.
I have a lot of those little heater core heaters. Different shapes and sizes. Only thing is they have Made in USA or Made in Canada on them. They are all from the 60's,70's and early 80's. Nice job.👍
I remember these things being available up until the '90s. Then they seem to just disappeared. I'm sure these are directly copied from one of those, with a lot of cheapening up and cutting corners.
Love it! I guess you could also use the heater exchanger to rebuild hard to find or over priced heater cores, good to know. Fwiw I recognise those hose clips, if I'm right they are prone to failure, often when you install them or if you have to tighten them because of a leak, the worm strips leaving you stranded. I recently replaced all the hose clips on VW van and went for the original style constant tension bands, they are supprisinigly effective, easy to install (with the right $10 tool), perfectly round and in theory maintain a constant tension on the hose regardless of thermal expansion and contraction.
They used to sell these everywhere up through the '80s. Mainly to put in the back seat of a car. Then they kind of disappeared but it looks like China has recreated them.
Possible easy mod if that flex hose isn't doing the trick to defrost the windscreen is to hard pipe it with something like pvc electrical conduit. The corrugated hose is great for bending into odd shapes, but all the internal turbulance really restrics flow. The great thing about the plastic conduit is that it can be bent in to shape pretty easily with a bit of heat from a paint stripping gun. I guess you probably have all the tools to bend the metal stuff, but that seems like more work to me 😂
I plan to send something to you that you need to own. Just letting you know it'll be to you in a few days. It'll have a Pennsylvania return address and it will probably be in a large poly bag or wrapped in poly bag material. It's new old stock and immediately reminded me of you.
I have always wanted to build.a.small heat exchanger that could be thrown on the dash of a old truck that would help.heat the cab and defrost the windshield .no.electricity but a valve to control flow.cheap fix for a terrible labor intensive and expensive heater core replacement. Great video !
Some of the guys in the old willys jeep forums have used this same heater in their full cab and half cab cl2a and so forth. They seem to work pretty good. I'd wager to bet they are better than the factory heaters. I have an Intermediate cj6 and the heater is better than the earlier jeeps but I wouldn't mind getting one of these for the longer rear half of the jeep. Might just get one!
They used to sell these up through the '90s for people to put in the back seats of their cars for passengers. I recall seeing them in the JC Whitney catalogs in the mid 90's always with a picture of a 1950s car. Looks like they've made a resurgence through China because of all the side-by-sides.
@sixtyfiveford yeah for sure! I remember seeing them marketed in Jcwhitney as Cab Heaters. I always wanted to get one for my jeep when it was an original cj5, but the heater was adequate . I stretched it a few years back into a cj6 and now I feel I need to af one to accommodate the extra length of the jeep now that I stretched it. On a Side note. I really do appreciate your videos. It's always something new to learn even though I'm an old dog now. Again.. I appreciate you for taking the time to do them for us. I REALLY need to get on that clothes dryer garage heater you continue to improve on.
Great video we would make these out of old heater cores and put them on the tractors in the winter time just to keep out feet warm fantastic idea and execution of this interested to see how this works as you go along.
I've done that trick way too many times. Take your pliers and crimp down the female Spade connector so it makes sure it holds really tight on the fuse.
Right now the only thing I will likely do is put some sort of valve to shut off the coolant during the summer to the heater core. And or possibly an external hose clamp (squisher) to limit the flow to the radiator during the winter.
I played around with it for a minute and it does increase the flow through the ducts if I block off a couple. I don't think this corrugated tubing is the most airflow friendly.
@@DougAskinYes, I will need to put a shut-off valve in there. I figured it would be easy enough to do later on. I always forget you're in the middle of summer right now.
I thought about going that route but the extra work in operating, diesel etc steered me clear. They used to make gasoline powered heaters (through the 1960's ish). That would be awesome to just flip a switch in the cab and have it pull fuel from the SXS fuel tank and produce heat.
And now lets make a water bath food/water heater/ water heater bag with the same system ! I feel so ennoying that since you cut the motor of the car, you can't use anymore the heat of the motor to heat my (sleepable) car... I'm wondering maybe there is a simple little thing to modify in my car ? Has someones already tried ?
Thats some impressive 3d printing. What printer do you use? Also, did you design it or just d/l it somewhere and modify it to make it work? Also, love your harbor freight magnetic light. Got one on black friday and use it all the time. Why tee? Why not redirect all antifreeze through it?
I bit the bullet a few months back and bought the Bambu X1 carbon. I just downloaded it and like every 3d file or seems had to tweak it a little for my application. Yeah, those little Harbor Freight lights have to be one of my favorite things I've ever purchased from them. I actually have two because I liked the first one so much. The tubing size is just way too small to divert all the coolant through it. Even in the winter the UTV would likely overheat. Essentially you're going from a 1-in line down to 5/16-in tube, which is roughly 10 times smaller.
I don't see how you would be disappointed with it in a skid steer. Another option is to also get a seat warmer (seat cover). They just plug into the cigarette lighter and go over the existing seat and keep your butt and back warm. Those make a difference and install is 20 seconds.
In my setup I also installed the heater in series rather than parallel. Don't know if it makes a big difference though. On my old car the standard heater also just uses a t-piece and it works fine.
The heater core is way too small to facilitate this. It is composed of 5/16 tubes that are roughly 10 times smaller just than a the 1-in radiator hose. You would begin to overheat the machine even in the dead of winter in under 10 minutes.
wouldn't put it anywhere near my classic, let alone install it in there. if it doesn't want to look like it belongs, then it has no place in my life, vehicles, or considerations for recommendations no matter how good it is at whatever it is that it does.
Nice little modification to get heat into the cab. The only thing I'd have done differently, was put a diverter valve, to send more hot water through the heater core during the winter and less or none during the summer. Then you'll get a lot more heat
I figured I'd worry about that when it gets warm. It's much nicer to work on it in the summer anyway.
Love seeing Ginger she is a sweetheart.

Yeah, the spring clamps are the way to go.
Nice upgrade to your utv. Ginger probably could care less, all she wants to do is hang out with her best friend. She is adorable 😍.
She lives too ride in/on any vehicle.
I'm so glad you tested this because I've been looking at one of these for that quick defrosting if my 4runner
I almost did this to our rzr. But I installed a diesel parking heater instead. Works really good.
Those pump out some good heat.
Will you do a video on the 3D printer? I’m impressed by that vent you made.
Would love to learn more about your 3D printing exploits.
DC powered hair dryers work great as well. No need to modify the cooling system.
Bro this is perfect for my cab swap. Appreciate ya bud. Happy new year

Also doubles as a coolant cooler in the summer 🤙
Absolutely
I was just checking these out on amazon about a week ago lol! I’m gonna run one of these on my Jeep scrambler!
add a valve to the inlet side of core, during the hot hot summer months it will act like a passive radiator and heat up the cab something fierce
@@TBO207 That's the plan. I didn't have one on hand and figured it'd be way nicer to do in the summertime.

Heat is good! 👍 great video as always! Ginger looks ready to ride!

Good job. I did that to my El Camino.
I liked your fuse holder. I will be doing it that way in the future.

Going to have to buy Ginger a COAT! Blessings
Hey. Thr package im sending you is getting picked up today. It will be in an Amazon box instead, I added a couple other things as filler.
Those vents are awesome!
you and your dog are AWESOME
Pretty slick, Moe. Happy New Year!
Nice touch with the thermal at the end there.
I love pulling out the thermal camera and just making sure everything is flowing like it should.
solid welds
Keep us posted like to see any modifications 👍

That's a neat project. Do you think you would get better flow through the ducts if you blocked off a couple of those ports from the heater?
I played around with it for a minute and it does increase the flow through the ducts if I block off a couple. I don't think this corrugated tubing is the most airflow friendly.
MM77 Approved 👍🏼 👍🏼………………………………………………………….Brilliant!
Dang I need about 5 of these
I wonder if you need a shut off valve so it doesn't go through in summer. Ginger loves it

Excellent
Moe, great video.
Cool
Yesterday I was eyeing the snow n ice on my SXS wondering how that's going to work??.....I might have to install one of these! 👍😁
You can also just get those seat covers that plug into your cigarette lighter and keep your butt warm. I have those as well and those are pretty nice.
O⁰C in my shop this morning 😂 could do with about 30 of them, and a nice V8 to warm them up 😂
Nice!!
Broken down simply as usual!
I've been seeing alot of dudes install diesel heaters in their Side by side on the fb diesel heater groups

Nice mod👍.
Nice!
Much safer than the old gas ones.
I actually looked for one of those years ago. And apparently they're all gone... Or the vehicles they were in are all gone with them.
@sixtyfiveford JC Whitney use to sell them. I think some are still for sale.
Have you ever converted a gas engine garden tractor to LP ??
Do you have a URL to the air vent model?
It was on thingyverse called "swivel ball heater vent"
Thanks so much!

I didn't design the vents. Someone on thingyverse did and it's impressive.
Do you think that universal core could be used as a shop compressed air cooler between the pump and the tank ?
Think it would handle 120psi?
I doubt it. These are only built to handle The 15 psi a coolant system takes. Maybe you could push it up to about 50 but that's about it.
@@sixtyfiveford thanks
